Tomas is the English son of a German mother. From the Leicester of 1963 to 1966, the story moves to the Berlin of 1975. Tomas' relative, Herr Poppel, takes the young Englishman under his wing. Scarred by his own Nazi past, Herr Poppel has a curious ambition. Tomas learns that the past is what we've survived and the future is what we've survived for.

Struggled a lot with the randomness of this book. Odd characters, bizarre plotting and difficult subject matter. Only really came for life for me when they went to Berlin. As I've visited the city it was fascinating to hear how they traversed the divided sections.
