Blake's life had been like one long nightmare, filled with terror and pain, but she never gave up. She fought and she survived. She built a life for herself, outside of her past.
Then three monsters took her. She had thought she was broken already, but they obliterated any tiny shards of herself she had been clinging to, smashing everything she had ever been to nothing but dust.
She was done fighting. Done surviving.
But an unexpected light came into her life, illuminating the pitch darkness she had fallen into, and a promise pulled Blake back from the very brink of giving up.
Now Blake has so much good in her life - family who love her and four guys who make her feel safe and cherished in a way she never even imagined possible. Day by day they are all showing her life can be bright and joyful, and proving to her that she doesn't have to keep fighting alone because they will protect her, always.
But with an unknown enemy becoming increasingly bold in their attempts on Blake's life and old monsters crawling from the shadows, can they really keep their promises? Can Declan, Grey, Liam, and Tom help her overcome the demons of her past and the monsters of her present, to find the strength she needs to take the future she wants with all of them?
This is book two of the 'Perpetually Broken' series. It is a contemporary reverse harem intended for readers aged 18yrs+ Trigger warning - This book addresses some dark subject matter including sexual and physical abuse, kidnap and violence.
📚 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐓𝐇 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄 📚 Is the second full length book within the (Perpetually Broken) series by new to me author Kerry Taylor. Spoken in Multiple POV's. Like the previous book this too also ends in a cliffy.
After inhaling the previous book I couldn’t wait to jump back into this emotional story. This picks up right where the previous one left off, it also uncovers who was behind trying to destroy Blake’s life after a few unsuccessful attempts were made. Even though I’d worked out who it was it unveiled more shocking news.
This is a slow burn emotional story which follows Blake and everything she’s endured in her life. Some parts are hard to read, sometimes over the top and unbelievable but it’s fictional so anything goes.
I liked how her healing is/was a long slow process which rung true to how I could imagine someone going through trauma like Blake’s.
4.5 stars. Ok. So the slow burn is more of a tiny spark that still needs fanning…which, I get. I mean, it fits the pacing and characters. But damn. 2 full length books into the trilogy with only sporadic kissing, and one tiny orgasm between them. Thats way slower than I expected, and I’m just really hoping this last book actually brings everything together.
Anyway. The rest of the book was still really good. I didn’t love it the same way I did the first book, but that’s just because I was getting impatient.
I really enjoyed this book and I love all the characters!! In this one Declan and Blake’s relationship really shines and all the men get a little moment each with their girl!
The suspense really ramps up after the cliffhanger and we still don’t know about anything that’s happening!! There is still so much angst and heartache but trust the process because I know everyone will get their HEA!
I rated this 4.5 🌟 for how much angst there was for Blake and how it seemed like everyone took a step back from so much progress but I guess that’s life!
I can’t wait for the next one!! And will be sad when its overrrrrr!
Once again, absolutely amazing. I guessed right, but I’m sure there is more to come. I’d love to leave something longer, but I have to run because book 3 is calling me. There’s no second guessing describe the book and go for it because if you read that one you’ve got to read book two
In terms of technicality this is a good book. There a few errors and the story moves at a nice pace. The one thing that is keeping me from loving it, is all the trauma. The author is trying to creat shock value instead of using her writing to convey emotion. I know that multiple bad things can happen to people, but why must this character never catch a break? First she abused all of her childhood, then instead of just getting assaulted, she’s held for days and brutally tortured and assaulted. THEN she gets hit by a car, trapped in a burning room, betrayed in the worse way and the trauma just keeps happening. I feel like the story and the FMC could be just as powerful/impactful without the over the top trauma. I won’t be picking up the next book bc honestly I can’t read anymore bad stuff happening to the FMC just for shock value.
Got a bit bored, I don’t think it’s the genre for me. I thought it would be more romance orientated, but it really isn’t. It’s more so focused on her overcoming her trauma, which isn’t a bad thing, just I thought the guys would be helping with it and they seem to make her worse.
Well this was disappointing. It was boring with no steam and no spark. This book felt useless in the series. It was just endless monologues on endless monologues followed by victim playing every step of the way. Yes it’s fine having a little bit (not saying she’s no allowed or entitled to feel that way, but as a reader, I’m bored and this is not real life) but this was too much so yeah no. And the amount of stupidity coming from her is dumbfounding. How can someone be that clueless and when she finally realized at the end, she just went oh yeah my fault! I’m so stupid. Yeah no thank you. Next book.
Omg I usually read this authors books as soon as they’re released because there’s no cliffhangers in her books but this the cliffhanger from hell. Might be the last time I do that lol
Will be sitting here eagerly anticipating the last book in the series. Can’t wait to see the resolution to Blake’s story!
Book one introduced us to Blake who was trying to overcome severe PTSD, depression, flashbacks etc due to a lifetime of sexual assault and physical abuse, as well as a Kidnapping and attempted murder. She spent the whole first book learning to trust the father, brother and her brothers 4 friends who were all committed to her recovery and protection. It ended with a cliffhanger, Blake was hit by a car.
In book two we pick up immediately in the aftermath of the hit and run. She's unconscious on the ground, the ambulance is coming and once she gets to the hospital she's in a coma for a couple weeks as the men in her life spiral and fall apart with worry. Once they bring her home, book two kicks off with its central premise, everyone is scrambling to determine who wants her dead and how can she best be protected.
While I found the first book to be a compelling and enjoyable look at what it might be like to have trauma like hers and be surrounded by so much male love and nurturing, I found book two to be a bit more challenging of a read.
First and foremost while this holds the claim of being a romance novel, it's light on romance and primarily the focus is on the trauma and anxiety experienced by the main female character. We are inside her head and her head is not a pleasant place to be. There was a moment where for the first time in my life, I grasped the mental state a person might be in to be suicidal. The amount of non-stop fear, pain and suffering this character experiences every second of every minute of every hour of the day was exhausting to read. The endless nightmares, sleep deprivation, constant state of exhaustion this character experienced was stressful for me as the reader. As a person with general anxiety disorder, I have to say this was a fairly accurate portrayal of the more profound side of anxiety... far worse than anything I personally have experienced. But reads as real nonetheless.
Things I noted-
I pointed out book one was a slow burn for obvious reasons. The nature of Blake's trauma makes spicy sex scenes unwarranted. She's not ready and as the reader reading all that's happened to her and still happening to her, there is no version of even fake reality where the writer could have made spicy scenes make sense. I say all that to say, not sure about future books but there is nothing more than a few kisses in this book and once instance of touching at the end. If you are looking for steam, you will need to be as patient as the 4 men in her harem.
The amount of calamity that happens to this character rivals every season finale of Grey's Anatomy every made. It rivals all the worst things that ever happen on One Life to Live. It's right up there with Jamie Lee Curtis's character in the Halloween franchise. Like how on earth ONE woman experiences the number of catastrophic and over the top insane things Blake experiences all her life through now boggles the mind.
While these 4 men are "patient" and not pushing Blake (supposedly), I found myself frustrated with them claiming her and assuming that because she likes and trusts them, a complex relationship between her and 4 men was even remotely acceptable. With all her brain damage and psychological fragility, I questioned her agency and ability to even know what she wanted or what was best for her, while their intentions weren't predatory, their actions kinda were in my opinion. In the midst of trying to get her head on straight, at no point should she have been anxious and worried about how her past and present impacts these 4 grown and stable men.
I couldn't understand WHY they loved her. At no point over the course of two books, over 300 pages each, are we treated to any aspects of Blake's personality beyond that of her damage, suffering, trauma etc... she doesn't display interests or hobbies, we don't know what her life philosophies or values are, her actions and behaviors are limited to survival mode exclusively. While this is often the case with people this severely hurt, it doesn't explain how 4 completely unique grown men fell in love with her. Beyond her beautiful hair and eyes, the only thing there was to fall in love with was her brokenness...and that was a little disturbing to me. It's rare that someone falls in love with brokenness and the relationship isn't filled with codependency and toxicity from what I have seen.
I struggled to stay in the fantasy. Meaning, I'm aware romance novels cater to various fantasies...and expecting things to be realistic often ruins fantasies. But because this was so heavy on mental health realities, it was hard to accept other aspects of the story as fantasy.
I'm not sure if I will read book three, I need time to decompress from book two. I read the first and second book back to back and the subject matter is heavy and stressful. I'm not sure I'm prepared to sign up for another 300-400 pages of this woman suffering through more outrageous events.

***Review shared for the series***
The third book recently came out so I reread the first two books and finally got to read the end... I have read almost all of Kerry Taylor's books and I do appreciate her as a writer. It can't be easy to write the heart wrenching stories that she does. It's extremely impressive. My husband calls these types of books "misery porn," and it is a very good description. You will cry when you read Kerry's books. It's inevitable. The tales are incredibly sad, but also incredibly moving. I am always impressed with the FMC's... That being said, this was my least favorite series of hers. I still gave this series three stars despite the fact that I almost didn't finish it. And that's because the writing itself is amazing.
I'm pretty sure in all of her books there is that moment where the FMC decides she needs to essentially suck it up and be strong all on her own. And every time I want to scream and shake her. But especially in this series. Because when it happens, it hurts her boyfriends. And in this series it just seemed like she was constantly hurting them. I hate to say it, but she did not deserve them. They were freaking saints....
That being said, I have known someone with a TBI. And one of the long term effects of it for them was anger issues. I don't know if that's where the author was going with how Blake was reacting, if she was, then okay.. but I wish they had mentioned it and talked about it on page. I am all for strong independent women, but too often those strong independent women tend to treat their partners like shit when they try to help. It's borderline emotionally and verbally abusive.
Okay... the other thing that not only made me uncomfortable but also annoyed with the FMC is the sex. Firstly, her reactions to sex, what she said, I don't even know exactly what it was but I was half laughing, half cringing at her during the sex scenes. Super uncomfortable and awkwardly written to me.
Blake also went back and forth about how she felt when it came to getting intimate with her partners. It did touch a little bit on her inhibitions being effected by her brain injury. But like... she would claim she was so sure about becoming intimate, and then she would talk about regretting it but wanting to do it again in the same paragraph. (pg. 328 book 2.) Literally drove me up the wall. If you can't figure out how you feel about it, you shouldn't be doing it. Which is exactly what her therapist said.
Aside from that, Blake's relationship with her brother (Trent) and father (Simon) was absolutely beautiful. The amount of support and love that Trent and Simon gave her made me cry more than once. Having the support and love from a partner is one thing. But to go so long without having familial support and having to deal with the abuse caused by mother, and then being cared for by them in such a huge way was beautiful. I almost wished this book was just about Blake getting rescued by her father and moving in with him and her brother and healing. Literally the only thing I read is romance, and the romance aspect is what ruined this series for me. Ooops...
I want to reiterate what I said in my review of book one.
EVERYONE RESPONDS TO TRAUMA DIFFERENTLY. YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO JUDGE SOMEONE BECAUSE IN YOU OPINION YOU WOULDN’T DO THE SAME THING. NO TWO PEOPLE ARE THE SAME.
That being said I will reiterate again that by the end of book two all she’s done is kiss and was touched ONE time by Dec with her CONSENT.
You all are hating on this author for no reason. She even said in the first book before the TW that you don’t know what you’ll do unless you yourself have been through it. Not only that no one deals with emotions or trauma in the same way as others.
That being said everything moves at Blake’s pace. If she wants to stop they back off. If she wants more it’s done with her consent and it being known that if she wants to stop they will.
The MMC’s are extremely loving and caring and mindful of her trauma and feelings. They do not force her or make her feel as though things have to happen.
If you want to give this series a try go for it. I enjoy it as it shows very real situations in life of trauma.
I will say it’s not heavily trauma based. There’s flashbacks where we see glimpses but not full on detailed descriptions of what exactly she’s been through.
She’s being targeted by a crazy woman and worried her past is going to catch up to her. But it’s focused on her healing and learning to live with her trauma and survive and flourish.
Also while trying to build a relationship with four men who absolutely adore the ground she walks on.
I mean I would have rated this higher but it felt like the plot was a bit predictable Like I appreciate the fact that this wasn't like some random book in which the girl just falls head over heels with the MMC/s as soon as she meets them (yes it is a mental health related book but some books do that) but you literally understand who's gonna betray them. Like ofcourse it was fking Overall there were minimum to no grammatical errors and I liked all the guys EXCEPT Declan and now ik some of ya'll are gonna attack be but hear me out It's more of a personal preference, I mean there's an interesting character background but imo not much of a character development? Yeahhh 3.5/5 the cliffhanger is kind of obvious (I mean limited options)
This book does pull at the heartstrings, it has you rooting for the heroine. Obviously she won't heal overnight but I found it dragged a bit. Every time we had some character development we went back four paces. The plot just turns into a diary of recovery and not much else, well unless you include the detailed lists of abuse.
What put me off and had me wondering if I would even read book 3, was the vomiting. I don't like reading about it every chapter. I can assure you it's not something you want to dwell on when you suffer from it. The heroine literally has to be cajoled and begged to eat every meal yet at the institute we can assume she was eating. I hate to say it but perhaps a different sort of institute would be better for her. Her character is actually regressing I don't see improvement here... A team of professionals would be ideal especially if it takes 7 people to look after her daily. Maintaining that indefinitely is near impossible.
Blake, her men, and family are back- and brace yourself, because the plot thickens. Our story begins with a traumatized heroine that’s been through hell and back and ends with some revelations that I totally saw coming!
All the guys are so different and yet so similar. They all have different personalities but the love and loyalty they have for each other is fierce and unyielding. They’re also really patient and understanding towards Blake and I completely melt every time they tell her so.
I honestly can’t get enough of this unique and consuming world that Kerry has created. I’m obsessed with these characters and I cannot wait for the next book!
Don’t get me wrong, I love RH, but do get annoyed at lead fems who have been traumatised and still kick as$ and have no issues. Sometimes I mutter ‘get real’ at them. Finally a lead who is traumatised but strong in the ways she can be, someone who is real. If you’re looking for someone who learns to fight like a ninja, manages to forget their horrific past and have minimal to no triggers then move on. If you’re looking for someone who is real to her past, who still manages to wobble through every day in spite of triggers etc, someone who you can relate to in a personal way, then this series is so, so for you. Kick back and enjoy a large dose of amazing. Thank you Kerry Taylor for putting it how it really is, you went from an unknown author (to me) to my top 2 from the first book.
Strength From Courage, the second book of the Perpetually Broken series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). I liked where the story line went, and I have to say, I didn't see THAT coming! The book ends on one heck of a cliffhanger. I had the same issues as the last book, American characters using British slang and words, I got more used to it, but I was occasionally pulled out of the story as there was a lack of distinctive voice with each character. The personalities were different, and the author uses nicknames and endearments to hint at who's speaking, but this could easily have been a five-star read if Taylor had simply based the story in Britain.
3.5 stars for this second instalment. Blake's story continues as she navigates her new reality and it appears that this girl cannot catch a break. Whenever things seem to be kind of settling for her, something happens and she is thrown into the deep end again. The love stories are slowly developing and to be fair, considering the FMC's character it wouldn't have been better fitting for her to simply throw caution to the wind and embrace a future with the MMCs. The book fell a bit flat for me here as I found myself skimming every now and again. However, I am interested enough to see how the story concludes, so off to the next book.
Again another five stars to Kerry Taylor and her fantastic word play.
I loved this book. The tragic past of Blake. The story lines of each charcter building and getting stronger. The relationships coming together. It is all a perfect melody and harmony.
The overall plot is twisted and thrilling. There is a genuine fear for Blake and the guys. Each pages drives you further into the story. You will jot be able to put the book down.
For sure there were moments I cried. Could not hold back. Honestly, I look for that in a read because it's hard to find something that makes me cry or laugh out loud. This book did that.
Such a heartbreaking story! You need to read the first book in this trilogy, as this is not a standalone. I’m so ready for Blake and her guys to catch a break and have their happily ever after! I did love this book and felt the storyline moved at a good pace. I like how Blake and her relationships with the guys are moving slower since someone that has gone through what she has isn’t going to just jump in a relation with four guys. That cliffhanger was a doozy and I can’t wait for the next book of this series!
This second book in the excellent Perpetually Broken series, was another action-packed read, full of emotional reflection and growth, violence, hope, and love.
Blake is still being targeted by an unknown assailant, and her Dad, brother, and harem of guys, are doing everything they cannot keep her safe. After surviving two more near fatal attacks, this books ends in yet another cliffhanger, with Blake and Fed's lives hanging in the balance, and a gunshot ringing out..
I am looking forward to reading the third book in this gripping series.
Some times books like this make me so angry because the main character can never catch a break!!! As soon as you think you know all the villains, another one will pop up out of no where! With all that being said, I loved this book and can’t wait for the next! It would have been 5/5 but there are a few, small errors. Like it needed one final peer review before publishing. Oh and the cliffhanger almost made me break my phone so be prepared for that.
Did I see that coming - well slightly yes in the sense of it made sense to me for that to be the outcome. There was another bit of guessed but I'm naturally a suspicious person. On the whole though I can guarantee reading a book by this author will always result in me crying at some point usually several times. I like the authors style of writing, the characters she comes up with, broken but strong fmc and a good storyline!
