Oh boy was I excited to sit down with another novel by Isaka, whose novel BULLET TRAIN from last year is one of the best thrillers in recent memory. THREE ASSASSINS is more digestible (with only three intertwined plot lines instead of five and a faster read) but it has the same manic energy, the same all twisted together plotting, the same universe full of assassins at every turn. Isaka's style is recognizable, blending wit and pathos.

There are three assassins (well there are many more but three main ones) and one outsider who finds himself in the world of assassins, so be ready for plenty of violence, including suicide.

And if you haven't read BULLET TRAIN yet, get on that. I hope this means we have more Isaka in translation to come.

I've decided I love this author. Bullet Train was such an amazing read and whilst Three Assassins doesn't quite reach those dizzying heights it is a hugely compelling thrill ride, quirky and weird and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Three Assassins plus one man seeking revenge in the death of his wife circle around each other relentlessly in this addictive narrative. Full of ghosts both literal and metaphorical this is a twisted tale of a community that deals in death, in some ways this is a strangely emotional relationship drama if you can imagine the most twisted relationships ever.

The ending is melancholy and somewhat interpretive, the characters are oddly likeable and overall this was another terrific read from this author.

Suzuki is a former teacher who has infiltrated a criminal gang that was responsible for the death of his wife. The assassination of a member of that gang involves Suzuki with three rival hired assassins. The Whale talks his targets into killing themselves, but he is haunted by their ghosts. The Cicada’s speciality is his knife work and he is especially adept at killing whole families. The Pusher does just what his name implies - he pushes his targets in front of trains and cars.

I really enjoyed “Bullet Train” and was looking forward to this book that also features competing assassins. However, this book is missing the weird, clever, farce-like touches that were in “Bullet Train”. This book is much more plodding. It switches among points of view, so we sometimes have to read about the same situation from several characters. The Whale is mopey, the Cicada is creepy and a little manic, only the Pusher had an interesting twist to his storyline. This one can be skipped, read “Bullet Train” instead. 3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

Three Assassins
By Kotaro Isaka
This is the first book in the Assassin/Bullet Train series. I just read Bullet Train and want to read the rest in the series. This concentrates on a few assassins' operations going on in Tokyo. Three groups of assassins and how they do their business. Each group has different styles, personalities, and feelings of death.
Lots of action, great characters, and some suspense.
It mostly follows a guy who just wants revenge for the death of his wife. He finds out it wasn't worth it.

A turn-page story about criminal gangs and professional assassins in Tokyo.

The plot is very intricate and full of events, twists and even some humour. Every assassin has a quirky codename and his unique modi operandi.

Suzuki is a former teacher whose wife was murdered by the son of a gang boss. He decides to get revenge and enrols in the cover company of the gang.
The idiotic son of the gang boss is killed on the street in front of him, being pushed under a moving car. Suzuki sees who did it and is sent to follow and find this person. He sees the house where this assassin is living with his family and gets mesmerised by his two adorable sons and lovely wife. He tries to save them from the gang's revenge.
In the story are involved others two assains who are trying to find the Pusher.

Three Assassins, by Kotaro Isaka, is one of the most unusual, imaginative, wacky, and endearing novels featuring assassins I have read. Three Assassins was published in 2004 and is being translated into English for the first time. Suzuki is a teacher and regular dude until his wife is killed. A violent criminal organization, Fraulein, is responsible for her death. Seeking revenge, he leaves his morals at the door and starts working with said violent criminal organization. Moving through the Tokyo underworld he crosses paths with all kinds of hitmen, torture specialists, a group of actors that can play any role and other miscreants to avenge his wife.

This book has everything! Assassins? At least three. Torture? You betcha. Ghosts? Yup. If Tokyo was really like this would I visit? Nope. How anyone survives in this Tokyo is anyone's guess. There is an entire industry devoted to killing people. Its like there is a Yellow Pages for the evil.

Told from the perspective of Suzuki and the Three Assassins, the changing POVs allow you to get to know each in a way that is unusual but extremely effective. Especially, the assassins and the emotions coursing through them. Hitmen have feelings too.

Three Assassins is hectic, weird, and oddly engrossing but its the characters that steal the show. The Whale is an assassin who gets people to commit suicide through suggestion. The Cicada uses knives and does the jobs others turndown; mainly families. The Pusher. He pushes his victims in front of cars, trains, that sort of thing. No one knows the identity of The Pusher and many believe he's an urban legend.

I loved everything about Three Assassins. Its violent and crazy but also contains truckloads of heart. I cannot recommend it enough!

My sincere thanks to Kotaro Isaka, ABRAMS, and NetGalley for pleasure of reading an advance copy of Three Assassins.

I like the idea of all these independent contractors just murdering their way through Japan, but I struggled to relate to any of the characters and not because of the murdering I just felt their decisions were odd and to me didn't make a lot of sense.

A beautiful Japanese noir novel about a teacher wanting revenge for the death of his wife. He goes undercover in a criminal organization. He fails and the person responsible for he wife’s dead will kill him too when the son of the crimeking falls in front of a car. Enter the mythical assassin The Pusher. Suzuki the teacher follows this character and becomes the middle of a chase to find the Pusher who has to be killed as a retribution.
Involved are Cicera a talkative assassin who kills whole families and The Whale who does not kill himself but brings people to suicide. They all get caught up in this tale.
It is an original tale about murder and morality and haunted by ghosts of the past and victims.
Truly an enjoyable Japanese tale and its vision on murder and mayhem.
Well advised to read, his Bullet train is also being read the next three weeks of vacation.

Unsure what to make of this tbh. It appears to be a metaphysical sort of musing on the value of human life as mediated by a very implausible plot involving rival gangs of very implausible assassins. Intermittently fun and cinematically written but less to it than meets the eye, imo.

OMG - brilliant yet again from this author - a cross between Pulp Fiction and Fargo!
Having loved Bullet Train, I simply had to grab this one from the library and I certainly wasn't disappointed -
Former teacher Suzuki has attempted to infiltrate a criminal organisation going by the name of Fraulein and operated by a man called Terahara - his son killed Suzuki's wife by crushing her between his SUV and a lamp-post but walked away scot-free due to his father's influence. Despite doing some reprehensible things, Suzuki sees it as the only way to get vengeance. But his boss, a young woman called Hiyoko, has worked out what he is up to....
Meanwhile, three independent assassins are at work in the city: The Whale, who persuades people to take their own lives; The Cicada, a deadly knife expert; and The Pusher, who pushes people in front of trains or vehicles...
All three end up involved in each other's lives and those of Suzuki and Terahara's organisation as another complicated plot evolves, told with exquisite skill and craft by this excellent author - 9.5/10.

This is the story of Suzuki, a widower out to avenge his wife’s murder.

Except… it’s not really about that… because (spoiler) the murderer gets plowed down by a mini van in the first chapter (I’ll admit this scene was a favorite for me.)

Suzuki spends the remaining chapters bumbling around, completely naive and (frankly) a little dumb. He’s kind of just along for the ride.

The story really centers around The Whale, The Cicada and The Pusher - in case you haven’t guessed already these are the titular “Three Assassins”.

The Whale is large (hence the name Whale, apparently) and one bad day away from being admitted to the insanity ward. He is haunted *literally* by the ghosts of his past, and they like to pop up at the most inopportune moments.

The Cicada is completely unhinged but the best character (to me) in the entire book. Manic with just a touch of creepy. Your classic up and coming assassin. “I’m here to rescue you, my dude” is peek hero vibes. Not to mention rescuing someone just so you can torture them. Like I said, unhinged, but we love him.

And then The Pusher. I’ll just say he spent little time on his professional moniker. Maybe it sounded better in the original language. (Also as a professional murderer he kind of pigeon holed himself with that one)

I liked the intertwined story lines. I liked the chaotic feel. But the writing was hard for me to get into, and many of the characters felt one note. I watched bullet train and was excited to read my first novel by Kotaro Isaka, maybe the mistake was starting here and not with the Bullet Train novel. Despite feeling disappointed I still plan to read Bullet Train. Fingers crossed it goes better for me.

this was so boring I’m sorry 😭

I didn’t care ab any of the characters honestly and the plot was nonexistent…there was definitely potential but it wasn’t executed well. I also don’t think it should be considered a thriller. The concept of the story makes it seem like it would be but it moves wayyyyy too slow to be a thriller.

Sigh. I was so excited for this after Bullet Train ended up being my favorite book of 2022. Maybe my expectations were a wee bit too high, but honestly I think this book just kind of flopped. It very obviously suffered from "oh gosh, I had a book that did amazing and everyone loved, I need to write something like that again."

It really felt like Isaka panicked and just re-wrote Bullet Train but with worse characters and a lackluster plot. The spark of ridiculousness and humor but also extremely existential and beautiful philosophy was completely absent in this story - leaving just a handful of pretty mediocre characters with random deep, meaningful, philosophical thoughts thrown in haphazardly into a completely average story.

These characters were honestly boring, especially in comparison to the ones explored in Bullet Train. The plot was boring and barely-there (I was constantly wondering why any of this was even happening, it seemed so pointless). And the writing didn't have the same spark - the humor was gone, the beautiful language was gone, the seamless integration of characters together was gone.

This was a very unfortunate read, and I'm hoping Isaka goes away from the "assassins" plotlines soon because I think he could write something amazing if he doesn't try to just re-write Bullet Train again.

I was looking forward to read this first instalment as I have read Bullet Train (book 2 from the series) previously. Set around Tokyo, 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙨 revolves on the backstory of Suzuki (hello sir, we meet again!) after the death of his wife due to a run over. He was out on his revenge towards Terahara's son who was said to be the driver, working as a contractor to Fräulein; a Terahara's outfit that involved with illegal operations trying to gain their trust before he could commit to his motive. An unexpected incident happened that get him involved directly with the three infamous assassins; Whale, Cicada and Pusher that intertwined their fate into a game of hunting and chasing.

Told in a perspective of Suzuki, Whale and Cicada, it highlighted more on stories of fear, guilt and the exploration of life and death rather than an action and suspense thriller. Bit political and psychological related, and as I read few reference of Terahara vs Hornet in Bullet Train (the assassins really gossiping about this incident a lot!), it excites me a bit to delve into the root story of it in here. Love the Hornet duo although it was just a brief intro I like their cunning and unexpected characters.

Fairly gripping and compelling; this should be an easy read for a 200+ pages but it gets underwhelming sometimes for me with its random unrelated scenes and dialogues. I love the distinctive personalities of the three assassins and their ways of killing people-- that underlying reasons and struggles especially for Whale who knocks off his target and making it to look like a suicide to then suffered from anxiety and haunted by the souls of his victims (tw: descriptive suicide scenes). Cicada was harsh and furious while Pusher was quite spooky to me-- his way of killing was too sneaky and gore!

A straightforward plot, not that twisty or intense but exhilarating much for a criminal underworld setting. This series could be read as a standalone because both books having different setting but if you crave for character's development (Suzuki was one of the characters in Bullet Train while both Whale and Cicada appeared occasionally-- there's a reason why both only secondary in book 2) then I would suggest you to go accordingly (I was expecting a story of Wolf in here but having none, maybe in book 3?). Would go for 3.5 stars to this!

Thank you Pansing Distribution for sending me an ARC for a review!

“This is stupid.”
“You seem to believe you aren’t stupid,” he said.

This was such a wild, violent ride. I expected this to be just okay and thrillers are not something I usually enjoy but dang I enjoyed this was a trip.

Three Assassins follows Suzuki, an ordinary man attempting to avenge his late wife by infiltrating the crime gang who killed her. To exert his vengeance, he must kill the three main assassins of the gang: the Whale, the Cicada, and the Pusher (if he’s even real to begin with, most believe he’s just an urban legend).

“The Whale convinces his victims to take their own lives using just his words.
The Cicada is a talkative and deadly knife expert.
The elusive Pusher dispatches his targets in deadly traffic accidents.”

We see a few different POVs in which we don’t only get to know Suzuki, but also the assassins. This story is very violent and the assassins do pretty awful things, so expect dark subjects in this book, yet they are so likable. Maybe likable is not the right word, but they are interesting. I could not help wanting to learn more about them and I adored seeing how they dealt with their realities being who they are, and doing what they do. I found the Cicada to be quite likable and I adored the Whale - he was such an interesting POV, not only because of how he got people to kill themselves but also how he dealt with all his ghosts.

There are many good moments in this novel. I may re-read it in the future and even pump this up to 5 stars.
