Hello everyone, I'm Mr. C Reviewer, and tonight we're discussing (He/Him) Anthony Connors-Roberts's book, The Boy In Makeup. Which was Anthony's first book, After reading the book I'm interested in reading more of his books in the future if any others come out.
I'd like to extend a huge thank you to booksirens for providing a copy of 'The boy in makeup' as an E-ARC in exchange for an optional honest review.
The book was first Published June 3rd, 2022. The narrative, told using first person perspective following multiple point of view (Cory and ben) and spans 9 chapters and 199 pages.
Summary: Cory navigates the challenges of being a young gay boy living on a council estate and attending a tough school. Despite facing social ostracism, his life takes an unexpected turn when he forms an unlikely bond with popular footballer Ben Roberts. However, complications arise when Cory finds himself developing romantic feelings for his newfound friend.
Review: -The author's writing style includes subtle yet impactful details that added depth to my reading experience. The mention of a character having breakfast was a simple way of incorporating everyday activities into the story without getting bogged down in lengthy descriptions. I also appreciated the author's aptitude for maintaining a consistent pace throughout the book, avoiding any dull moments or jarring transitions. This skill kept me fully engaged and made the book a pleasure to read.
In the past, I have often grown frustrated and disinterested when reading books with multiple points of view. As I have found that It can be difficult to keep track of all the characters and their individual storylines. However, in this particular book, I was impressed by the author's skill in intertwining the various perspectives to create a coherent and captivating plot. The timing of switching point of view throughout the story felt deliberate and strategic, providing deeper insights into the characters and their motivations. This technique helped me connect with the characters on a more emotional level and become fully invested in their journey.
Right from the start, I was captivated by Cory's live stream makeup tutorial in the book. One of its standout features is how realistically different scenes are portrayed. The author has carefully constructed a world that feels genuine, making it effortless for readers to get lost in the story. This meticulous attention to detail helps to establish a bond between the reader and the characters, allowing them to understand and relate to their experiences. As the plot unravels, I appreciated the chance to uncover who reported one of the teachers.
-I thoroughly enjoyed and was deeply moved by this book as it provoked my thoughts and emotions. It effectively inspires readers to stand up for their convictions and advocate for others along the way. Complex societal topics, such as white saviourism in interracial relationships and toxic masculinity in sports, are tackled with sensitivity and insight by the author. Furthermore, the novel also touches upon the struggles faced by individuals during the current pandemic, making it a timely and meaningful read.
-I was thrilled to discover that the book also had an audiobook version available. Narrated by Brian Vigen. Listening to the audiobook was a delightful experience, thanks to Brian's clear voice and ability to differentiate between characters. It was easy to follow the story and know who was speaking at any given moment. This attention to detail in the narration truly enhanced the listening experience and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the story. One unique aspect of this audiobook was its use of whispers for certain lines as written in the book. This added depth and made the narration more engaging. However, I did notice that in Chapter 6, the audio level was slightly louder than the rest of the book, requiring me to adjust the volume.
-What I found most enjoyable in the book was following Cory's progress and journey throughout the story. His growth in school, friendships, and personal development was engaging and kept me invested in his character. Likewise, other characters like Ben also experienced significant changes that added depth to the story. The introduction of Lizzie, Cory's best friend, was a particular highlight for me. However, I do wish their relationship had been explored further as it could have added more complexity to the overall story. I also appreciated the supportive presence of characters like Cory's mother and some of the teachers, such as Mrs. Honey and Mrs. Bush. In my opinion, the book could have benefited from being longer to allow for more in-depth character development and relationships to be fleshed out.
-This book has been a delightful and uplifting read, with a satisfying ending that came at just the right time for me. The story radiated warm and cosy vibes that never failed to bring a smile to my face. I hope there will be a sequel to continue their story, as I am eager for more. Additionally, I would love to see this book adapted into a movie, as I feel that it has the potential to be a heart-warming cinematic experience.
I rate each story I read out of 10 and for this one, I give it an 8. Remember this was what I thought about the book personally and I suggest that you give it a go for yourself.
been a long time since i've read a (good) high school book so when i saw this i thought why not? this looked interesting enough. if it was good i was thinking i'd rec it to my friend irl cos it seems like something they might enjoy but uh, spoiler: not really.
first thing, students definitely do not speak like that. the way they conversed was distressingly formal - with phrases like "cheers" and "nice to have our company". plus stuff like how quick the boys-wearing-makeup policy was approved (in ONE freakin day where's the school board)...let's just say it's not a realistic high school setting.
and i couldn't get over how robotic cory sounded like sometimes...he "placed his hand on his forehead". it feels very bland?? like i honestly couldn't gather any personality from cory's narrative. ben is a typical love interest as well, nothing special. they aren't bad characters, they just need more depth imo.
and there's some minor bits that don't make sense in the story. cory was so upset about breaking his phone - he could've just apologized to ben orally at school but okay.
the romance is okay, some expected hurdles about coming out and such, but it's resolved pretty quickly and i think we all expect a happy ending so...yup.
3.5⭐ Rounded up. This has a lot packed into it and I wish it had more time to develop & expand. Another 100 pages would have elevated this short story exponentially. Overall, very cute story and highly enjoyable. Much love to BookSirens and Anthony Connors-Roberts for my DRC.
Genuinely a nice short sweet story On Writing Super easy to read and for a -200p book surprisingly easy to get attached and familiar with the characters ! This is my first time reading from this author and i got to say i'm definitely interested in more and definitely seeing them go waaay further. I think it would have been a bit better if it was a little bit longer to let us get to know the characters more, their backgrounds, their daily lives. But even with that the quick emotional twist still felt ..well ..emotional lol I personaly It would be an awesome full 300+ page novel However THE REPRESENTATION We got it all ..literally all and i loved that so much it's inclusive and surprisingly educational As a whole still an adorable quick read

Thank you to BookSirens and Anthony Connors-Roberts for providing me with a free ebook, I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
I won’t go through the plot as this novella is super short not wanting to give anything away but we’re basically following our MC Cory and his experiences being the ‘Boy in Makeup’ alongside some other characters. It is very sweet and heartwarming - and breaking at times, a rollercoaster despite its length - and was an enjoyable read. Cory and Ben are rather developed in the timeframe and we’re almost introduced to some other characters including Cory’s bf Lizzie, his cute little brother Ryan and mum Michelle, Ben’s dad Trevor, some teachers and a few more. Being less than a 100 pages I was still able to get attached to them but would have preferred this book be longer to expand on this. I also loved the UK specific and modern references, I mean it starts with Cory doing a TikTok livestream and ‘cwtching’ added a lovely Welshness I didn’t know I needed.
I also liked how this book brought attention to issues and current events and had a good message. These include: online bullying, racial inequalities - tied with the homophobic rhetoric in sports, specifically football, referencing Justin Fashanu and the Qatar World Cup (where Muslims can be killed for being gay btw), the femme hating within the gay community, growing anti-trans movement and others. There’s an easy parallel between the mentioned author ‘I.B. Trolling’ and J.K. Rowling in terms of her TERFness. Some parts were maybe a little cringy and confusing but overall I did enjoy this. As others have mentioned I would have preferred it be more fleshed out but I would love to read more from Connor’s-Roberts in the future. There are a few spelling and grammatical mistakes I noticed that should be adjusted before publication too.
Despite being such a short story, I felt attached to the characters by the end. I would love it if we got a longer version to get to know the characters more
There were times when the writing didn’t flow quite right, but this is a first novella from the author. I very much enjoyed the writing style, humour, and characters.
I can’t wait for more from the author because book was really good 😁

Cory is a boy who wears makeup. He streams his routine live on TikTok every morning and answers questions from his fans, while trying not to be disturbed by the trolls.
Lizzie is Cory's best friend who supports him unconditionally. She and Cory eat lunch together, watch movies and babysit his younger brother, Ryan.
Cory attends Cartridge School and is a better than average student. But he has an enemy. Mr. Harris, the year head teacher, consistently belittles Cory and insists he take of his makeup.
As the end of the school year is approaching, Cory decides not to go back. Then, as he is being harassed by a student, an unlikely hero steps in. Ben, a footballer, saves the day and somehow Cory ends up as Ben's Maths tutor.
As Cory and Ben get to know each other, the teaching staff calls Cory in to tell him that Mr. Harris is on suspension for harassing him and will be let go of Cory agrees.
Many changes and choices face Cory and Ben. This lovely and well written book deals with LGBTQIA+ issues head on and at the level of a young adult. Homophobia, Racism, Transphobia, Sexism and ordinary trouble just being a young person are all addressed beautifully.
I'm not going to spoil the plot and ending of the book, suffice it to say, The Boy in Makeup is a fabulous book with a even better ending. This is definitely a five star read.
endless thanks to @anthonyconnorsroberts and @booksirens for allowing me to read and review this novella before it’s release ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
this easy to read young adult LGBTQ+ novella is definitely cute! it talks about stereotyping, racial injustice, homophobia, being failed by the education system and coming to terms with sexuality and gender expression. it’s also got some super sweet moments between the main characters that made my mum say, “why are you smiling at your phone like that?” 😂
my only critiques are that i wish it was longer, as i felt 93 pages didn’t allow the novella to develop into its full potential, and i recommend an editor go over it one last time before it’s release just to make sure all the grammatical errors are gone.
This was a very easy read - I read it in one sitting.
We are introduced to the MC, Cory, in such a fun, introspective way… thru a Live Stream Q & A! (Something I loved about this Novella was its references were all modern).
I loved that the author/Cory address things in such a relatable way, but also call out a lot of bullshit bullying & exclusion that still plagues our world, even in 2023.
I felt such emotion when reading this. There is such a dichotomy that I wish no one would have to feel- Cory is feeling confident putting on his makeup & then he says something like “ I was used to being called derogatory names”. No one should be used to that. He shouldn’t have to let his confidence falter, because a closed minded person decides to spew hate. Again, I am glad Cory/the author are calling out bullying in such a real way!
There are moments of bliss & then boom, heartbreak. Not just regular heartbreak , but heartbreak with an extra layer of hurt entwined in.
Add to your TBR if you like: -Dreamy Dior Dual POV (majority is Single POV) -A Huda Happy Ever After -Full Coverage Representation and not just being “mentioned” but being addressed and stood up for! -Smashbox Worthy Self Discovery & Self Acceptance
The ending was a whirlwind & even had me tear up! The entire Pride Parade scene was my favorite part of the Novella!
I typically prefer college romance over high school, but I don’t think this specific story would have translated over with quite the impact into college era. So I think it fits perfectly well as high school.
This book has been educational for me. Many things (not afraid to admit) I didn’t know, or never crossed my mind. While I can always learn more, I feel less oblivious/ignorant having read this.
As with any Novella I read, I always wish there is a little bit more. However, since this was a Novella, I think the pace of the story was well done.
This little novella is such a sweet debut. Unlike the title states, I actually didn't hear about it via TikTok. I found out about it through a book group and I'm quite glad I did.
The best about this novella: *Cory's mom. She's absolutely supportive of her son. *Lizzie, Cory's BFF. She's his ride-or-die. Unless there's large crowds. *Mrs. "Honey" and Mrs. Bush. You'll see why.
The story is about Cory, a gay 17 year old who loves to wear makeup and is very good at the application thereof. Not going to lie, I'm always a little envious of those who can do makeup so well as I've never quite gotten past the mastery of mascara. *laughs* Of course, he has had his battles with homophobic persons and especially one teacher who seems to target him purely for his makeup.
He meets Ben, a footballer (soccer for us Americans) who takes up for him against a bully and then vies to be his friend. Cory is assigned to be Ben's tutor in math, which shocks the time out of Cory as he's not fabulous at the subject. The growth between Ben and Cory was typical for that age. It's shy and sweet.
While this is a story set at the END of "high school" (sorry, I don't know what it's called in the UK), the characters are nearly aged out and there is no intimacy.
👉🏻💥Always check the TW/CW💥👈🏻
Anywho! Time to wrap this up with the goodies: Read: 4🌟🌟🌟🌟
I felt particularly uncomfortable each time Cory was told to keep things a secret, which I guess what part of the point, with how it's described as being similar to Heartstopper in some aspects. It also feels very deliberate that the other boy is called Ben, and the parallels to Heartstopper are quite clear. That isn't a bad thing, I can just see why it's described as being along the same lines as Heartstopper. ~ The characters had a surprising amount of substance to them for how short the book itself was, and a surprising amount actually happened too. However, I enjoyed the characters and liked that positive outcomes came from the bad situations that came up. • Thank you to BookSirens for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Cory just wants to be himself and wear makeup in school. He wants to feel comfortable with who he is, but there are some bullies that try to make him feel less than.
Will he find the love he deserves?
This was a cute, fun, quick read. It touched on some issues that LGBTQ+ people face. It helped bring some awareness of how some people react when their loved ones come out - both positive and negative ways.
I also found myself googling what some things were - chips in cones? coins in TVs? So I did learn a little bit about South Whales terminology!

This was such a cute story with lots of representation, which I loved! The story gave off many happy and cozy vibes and it often put a smile on my face. I do think it could be so much better if there was more of it. As a reader, you don't get a lot of time to get to know the characters, which is a shame, because they are lovely and interesting. For now I'll give it 3.5 stars, but it has great potential to become much more than that!

I had the opportunity to read this before the release date, and I fell in love the with Cory's story. This book is for all the lovers of Love Simon and Heartstopper, yet Anthony takes the rhetoric a step further, with a clear message of being true to yourself and if that involves a make-up palette, then so be it! This novella left me wanting more, since there is plenty of room for expansion and development, which I would be eager to read. This is just a thoroughly enjoyable tale of teenage angst, love, with a bit of football and full-coverage foundation thrown in.
This was my first time reading a story like this, the cover caught my eye right away and I was able to get an advanced copy and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the story and I also love happy endings. It was different for me to read about a boy wearing makeup, but I feel like expressing yourself, being you should never be an issue but people will never stop having an opinion of others, you just have to keep doing what you do and not worry about them. I like how he kept being himself and he finally got his happy ending he never though he would have. 😊
The Boy in Makeup is a YA story about Cory, a courageous teenager just trying to be his authentic self, and Ben, an athlete who found himself wanting to be closer to Cory. I enjoyed Cory and Ben together. I wasn't sure of Ben's motives in the beginning, but as the story went on it was more apparent Ben was a good guy. I loved Cory's strength to not let the haters get to him. He truly is an inspiration. I recommend this book.

This book is beautifully written I kept smiling whiles reading it throughout. I loved seeing Cory the main character progress throughout from school, friendship and becoming more confident with who he is and wants to be. I loved the progress of the others characters that we meet in the book. The different topics about the LGBTQ+ community came across really well presented. I loved this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone can’t wait to see what another books Anthony with release and I hope there is a follow up book for this one as well.
I really enjoyed this story, it’s a super quick read with tons of charm. It’s very engaging right from the start of Cory’s live stream makeup tutorial. The characters are well done, dimensional and interesting, which can be a bit harder to achieve in novellas. I loved the two main characters, Ben is especially endearing in his attempts to befriend Cory and get his attention. I loved the lessons in Cory and Ben’s story, that good things can came when people choose kindness over judgement and how important (and challenging) it is to embrace your authentic self. A lovely and relatable read.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Well written and composed story. Good reality and background that adds to the story. Well developed characters and relationships among them. Enjoyable short read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Such a lovely story of Cory and Ben. An easy read, finished within 1 evening, a few moments that made me laugh throughout, would highly recommend and would love to see book number 2 to find out more about Cory!
Loved it! It has me giggling like a little kid at some parts and I couldn’t put it down. I loved that it was a cute story but also showed the difficult parts of coming out and loving who you love. A must read.
I loved this book, it such a sweet modern story that deals with a few different issues within the LGBTQ+ community without being extremely heavy. I think this novella is perfect for teens, especially those who are learning to accept themselves or just want to see things from another persons POV and educate themselves a little. It’s also written to be dyslexia friendly which is so important for accessibility!! I will be giving this book to my little brother (he’s in highschool) as I think he will really like it especially with all the modern references and I think it will resonate a lot with him. Really really looking forward to future projects from this author🫶🏼
I rated The Boy in Makeup by Anthony Connors-Roberts 4/5 stars. The plot and the characters were absolutely adorable but I wish there was a little bit more substance to this book. I feel like the audience was thrown right into the romance section of this book with very little background on the setting or the main character, Cory. After having read several other reviews about this book, I have seen that this is a general opinion about this book.
Now that I've gotten the slight bad part of this book out of the way, I'd like to discuss what made this book great! First off, as stated before, this book gives MAJOR Heartstopper vibes! Between the anxious main character and the athletic love interest, and even just the fact that this book took place in a British high school! Second, the humor in this book was right up my alley! It was overall a funny and lighthearted book! Lastly, the pacing. Yes, I did include this as a con earlier in my review but honestly, I didn't mind it too much! As an impatient person, the fast-paced nature of this story was actually a refreshing change for once. And while I'd love to read more about Cory and Ben's story, I enjoyed being able to finish this book in only two sittings.
Also, OMG, the ending! No spoilers but it was giving fairytale ending vibes! Immaculate!
Overall, do I recommend this book? Yes! Especially to anyone who likes Heartstopper and is impatient just like me! It's a super fast read and I promise you'll love every second of this book!

I did really enjoy this book and I found that there was lots of very accurate representation for people from many minorities. I thought this book was amazing for showing the reality of being part of the LGBTQIA+ community as it showed both the support and understanding around people who are part of this community, as well as the difficulties they face on a day-to-day basis. I also found this book portrays the reality of having darker skin very well, which is something I have found to often be misunderstood in books.
I love how diverse this book is, however, I might have given this book a higher rating if there was more disability representation. I also found that this book could have been extended slightly as it is less than 200 pages long.
Thank you to Anthony Connors-Roberts and booksirens for allowing me to read this book before it was released. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
