The Nice Guy

Rate this book
Here’s my advice: Never fall for your boss when he is a walking red flag.

After finding out that my boyfriend cheated on me, I packed my bags and moved to Sunshine Falls.

My uncle's ready to retire, and he has always dreamed of me taking over his partnership at the animal clinic in town.

My surprise comes when he introduces me to my new partner, and it’s the cute guy I was talking to at the coffee shop.

It’s okay, though. I’m not looking for a relationship. My priorities are my career and starting over.

Ivan and I clash at every turn, and our transition is anything but smooth. Throw in the exotic animals that keep showing up, and I think we’re doomed.

The one thing we can agree on is to make my uncle proud.

When Ivan starts to open up to me, it's difficult to ignore my feelings. Throw in turtle-shelled glasses, and I’m putty.

I’m tempted to break my rule, but I know the consequences that come with dating a co-worker, and I won’t go through that again.

The Nice Guy is a diverse closed-door romantic comedy full of swoony moments, laughs, and a meddling Cuban family. It's Amor Series follows Cuban-American cousins as they find unexpected love. You'll get sizzling chemistry without the spice.

Fun and flirty

A cute and wholesome read with snappy characters and a few hilarious encounters. I enjoyed the rivalry aspect as these two vets try and learn how to work together despite their different approaches. Great family dynamic with a hint of matchmaking that adds to the drama and keeps the characters on their toes. The characters are entertaining and their drama relatable. I loved the quick dialogue and how the characters danced around their feelings as they fought to keep their business going. I wouldn't mind reading more by this author, and I'm excited to see the series progress. I received a copy of this book through JustRead Publicity Tours. The Nice Guy by Abi Sabina review.

“Any cat that attacks you is a friend of mine.”

A delightful slow burn!

Add in a loving but intensely meddling Cuban family, tons of animal antics, and an angry ex-boyfriend and you’re in for a treat!

Ivan feels like he’ll never outgrow the awkwardness he was teased for growing up. Madison refuses to date a coworker again. They’re forced to run a veterinary clinic together and have very different ideas about how it should be done.

I loved how they went from mutual dislike and keeping score against each other, to quickly depending on each other in their professional roles and being able to laugh about the situations they have to handle together. It was so sweet to see these two fragile hearts find their safe landing.

Ivan’s meddling family made me laugh so hard. Did you ever have any awkward situations when you were dating? I remember my mom telling a friend of mine she was convinced I was super serious about my boyfriend because I had purchased some new furniture. 😂 I was so embarrassed… but she didn’t end up being wrong. 💍

Read for:
Slow burn
Forced proximity
Workplace romance
Found family
Cuban rep
Adult communication
Boots the kitten

Content: Clean. Sweet kisses only.
TW: History of cheating, harassment, sick animals (but no deaths)

Many thanks to @abi_sabina and @justreadtours for an ARC of this book. Opinions are always my own.

“This woman has conquered my heart, and as much as I tried to fight falling for someone I work with, I was up against the impossible. She’s everything I’ve always wanted in a woman.”

This book was not my jam, but I do think there will be a lot of people who love this story!! So, I hope it finds those readers. The first half was good. I enjoyed the workplace romance, the veterinary clinic setting, and the clashing personalities.

What I didn’t enjoy was our FMC. She was really entitled and rude (and wrong). I wanted to see more growth from her overall. Don’t get me wrong, we did get some, but not a lot.

The tension/hooked feeling left the story about halfway through. While I like a good low-angst story, there needed to be something to keep me interested.

Finally, there was a lot of telling vs. showing. For example, instead of the writing and story showing us a character struggles with jealousy/anxiety/self-consciousness/etc. the character just goes “I am _____.” Which, I’m all for communication, but this took away from my enjoyment. It took away from the depth of the story. Instead of the characters learning each other and finding this depth in their relationship, it was handed to them easily on a silver platter.

Overall, I will read more from this author, but this one wasn’t my favorite. However, it wins all the awards for that stunning cover.

THIS WAS SO CUTE!!! I saw one review of it on instagram and hadn’t heard about it before but after that review I bought it immediately and a week after that I have now read it and looooved it.

You will absolutely love this too if you love workplace romance (they’re both vets), small town, animals, lighthearted cute and fun reads, banter, a matchmaking mom, cute kitten, strangers to lovers and slow burn. And there is no spice which I loved, I honestly usually skip that or skim through 🤭

"i’d make a fool of myself every day if i heard her laugh like this. it would be my life goal to make madison happy if she’d let me."

2/5⭐️

This was not a bad book. I mean I was looking for a quick read and a very chill romcom and that’s exactly what this was. So why the low rating?

First of all, sadly I did not like the FMC - there’s a difference between being confident and arrogant and she was most definitely more on the arrogant end of the spectrum in the beginning. Yet, for all the confidence and knowledge she possessed, she kept doing everything wrong? Making a mistake once or twice is fine, but not mentioning moments where she shines to balance it out, was very very frustrating.

Both of them had great back stories - him growing out of his high school phase and her history with her ex and yet there was no depth to either characters. Their anxieties and insecurities were mentioned more as a side-note, whilst I was expecting it to play into their relationship storyline and contribute to their character development, and that was pretty disappointing. I wanted a little bit of uncertainty, hesitation, push & pull, just those little moments to exhibit their insecurities and how they overcome them together, instead it was all about her lovely hair and his great biceps and the hydrogen peroxide scenes were definitely a little too repetitive.

Considering this isn’t a long book, it makes sense that their love story starts off early and yet for some reason, it felt more like insta-love, when clearly their dynamics, disagreements and differences should have made this more of a slowburn. That brings me to the last point - there were way too many cliches & tropes thrown into this and not all of them meshed well together. But of course, all this being said, this is just my opinion and I know that many out there will definitely like find this to be of their taste.

Luna was my absolute favourite and I can’t wait to read her book (yes I’m going to give this author another chance because like I said, it’s not bad writing, it’s just not to my taste but since Luna caught my eye, I truly do want to know her story).

2.5⭐

i have beef with this book. this book was fine but nothing more than just that. but what i have a problem with, was one moment the MCs hated each other, and the next second they were making out. like there was little to no build-up to the 'romance' if you even want to call it that. overall not impressed.

Awwww! I finished this great book and I don't even know where to start!

Okay, sooooo...THE NICE GUY by Abi Sabina is the first book of her new series! Yes! A new series! Wohooo!
Name of said series? IT'S AMOR! 💕 How fitting!

What do you do when you start to work in your uncle's veterinary practice and your co-worker is hot and absolutely nice too?
Well, you definitely try to NOT fall in love with him!
That's what Madison plans... but... does life really always goes as planned?

I ABSOLUTELY LOOOOOVED THIS BOOK!
The Nice Guy totally got me hooked and I wanted to pack my bags to move to Sunshine Falls!
Ivan is the charming veterinarian in town and isn't that happy about his new co-worker - at first. James' niece from the big city? Really suspicious! What does she really know about a practice in a small town?
Well... let's say he's really kinda critical at first, but working with Madison turns his prejudices into something else... 😉

I definitely loved the chemistry between Madison and Ivan! Both are veterinarians and have to deal with the fact that they've to work together while her uncle is on vacation, and he wants to retire too...
There's this special kind of spark between them! One of the reasons for my goosebumps all the time! 🤗

Next to the development of their relationship there are so many funny and chaotic things that happen at work! OMG! How much a laughed about!
Cats, dogs, a coyote and even a llama! 😆
Don't worry, I won't spoil you too much!
Just let me tell you that there's a lot going on in this book!

Soooo... yeah, I looooved all the characters in this small-town! Ivan's family is HILARIOUS! 🤣 Traditional cuban mentality and food and lust for life! I'd love to be part of his family!

The Nice Guy by Abi Sabina is a wonderful feel-good, closed- door, romantic comedy with lots of funny, swoon-worthy, heartwarming and dramatic moments!
So if this is your jam - get it! 😊

I honestly can't wait for the next book! 🥰😍

Thank you so much to Abi Sabina for this ARC. This is my honest review in my own words.

3 stars.

“But now I know that there are no leagues and games. There are just people who come together in a way that is just meant to be.”

The dedication was so sweet!! “Nice guys don’t always finish last. This one is for the good guys in our lives that make us believe in love.”

This was a cute vet romcom. I loved the vet setting!! Dogs, cats, horses, and bunnies. Yes, please.

Read this book if you’re looking for a quick, happy read with little conflict. It had some really cute moments between Madison and Ivan. I liked that they built a friendship through their vet partnership. While i loved their friendship- there were times where I felt like they mostly had a physical attraction, and I wanted to know more about each character and why they loved eachother on a more personal level.
I also enjoyed the idea that Ivan wasn’t some big, tough, macho guy’s guy- but him being terrified of ET made me like him just a tad less. 😂🙈

I did love Ivan’s family dynamic though, and I was so happy we got to see a lot of them. I loved the Cuban culture. The Cuban food descriptions had my mouth watering. The family culture was so sweet and hilarious because it’s so accurate to Latin culture (coming from my own experience with my family).

Lastly- can we just appreciate the cover on this book? It is one of my favorite covers I’ve ever seen. The vet scene, the kitten in the pocket (which is actually in the book- which makes it even better), and the color scheme is just 10/10.

Alsooooo. In the book, there’s Twilight, Harry Potter, and Taylor Swift references which is always a win for me.

There’s a set up for book two which is looking like it’s going to be a grumpy/sunshine (and single dad) trope, and I’m looking forward to that one. I also have my hopes for a Luna/Ezra book. 👀

Thank you so much to Abi for providing me with this ARC to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Such a great book! I loved it! (As I have everything this author has published.) Ivan is a perfect sweet and caring cinnamon roll male main character, and Madison is a feisty and stubborn female main character trying to rebuild her life after heartbreak. And the secondary characters! They steal the show, lol. So fun and funny. I love Ivan’s Cuban family so, so much. (Can’t wait for the rest of the series!) I’m not Cuban, but they reminded me so much of my awesome large family. We’re very teasing, if less intrusive romantically. The antics in the clinic and with the animals are also hilarious. I almost want my own kitten in my pocket. Almost. As for the romance: Ivan and Madison are attracted at first sight, but that attraction gets a dousing of cold water when they discover that they will be partners in the veterinary practice. There was tension and a bit of enemies to love as they worked through some battles of will over tradition vs innovation. Through that, however, an appreciation for each other grew, only building their attraction and eventually, affection. There are some beautifully swoony moments and kisses. Most of the story was funny and sweet, but there is a serious threat to their future that crops up in the latter part of the story. I really liked how the author dealt with it. It was taken appropriately seriously, but not over exaggerated or used to drive the characters to unrealistic angsty and dramatic bad decisions. The book is sweet and clean with no harsh language. This story is just fantastic. I wouldn’t change a thing! Except to make the other books in the series available right now so I don’t have to wait. I absolutely recommend this book!

Thank you to the author for the complimentary copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions are my own.

I feel like this is your very average/basic small town romance. Two vets, who “hate” having to work with eachother at first , and then fall in love in 2.5 seconds. I liked all the animals that they help in the book, and the characters were nice- just wish it was more of a slow burn, but that’s just personal preference.

wholesome clean read with a good plot and characters. my only complaint is to leave the damn cat at home..
That was super annoying, your a professional, when will you learn. and also I wish that it was a 500 page romance instead of a 300 page one.

Abi Sabina has done it again! 👏🏼 After loving her previous book series, Meet Cute, I jumped at the chance to review her latest book. If you like sassy characters, animals, and sweet closed-door romances, you need to read The Nice Guy.

I loved the chemistry between Madison and Ivan. Their rivalry in the workplace but also their infatuation with each other was such a good mix. The more they got to know each other the more you couldn’t help rooting for them. I felt just like Ivan’s cousins impatiently waiting for them to get together. 😂 Speaking of, the side characters and family aspect in this novel was so sweet and heartwarming. Something that I love about Abi Sabina’s books is that there’s always more to the story than just the romance. The friendship and family love that is also displayed in this novel is so positive and sweet. I loved how supportive Ivan’s family was.

As a huge animal lover, I loved the chaos and hijinx that ensued at the vet office. The Nice Guy has a lot of heart but it also has a lot of comedy and fun, too! From sweet kittens to an unruly llama, and everything in between, the animals made this book all the more enjoyable.

The Nice Guy was just such a good time. I flew through this book and enjoyed every second of it. If you’re looking for a fun and swoony, closed door romance, I cannot recommend this book enough. With a few subtle hints about what’s to come for future couples, I already cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Abi Sabina has done it again 👏🏼 This is the first book in her new series and I’m already wanting more!

I absolutely loved Ivan and Madison! It was so fun watching their relationship unfold.

Watching them both learn to open up and trust each other was my favorite. Ivan struggled some with self esteem, and Madison was fresh out of a bad relationship. They were afraid to share, but learned how to with each other.

Ivan was the sweetest! He was so protective of his City Girl, but also let her handle her self. His family was hilarious and his mom and all her meddling was one of my favorite things!

I loved the crazy situations at the vet clinic (like Ivan finally getting a llama…even if it was only for a day) This book was full of small town sweetness (and gossip!) and I can’t wait to go back for Sara’s story!

*I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book - thanks so much @abi_sabina and @justreadtours!

n this story, Madison moves back home after learning that her boyfriend was cheating. Back in sunshine falls, she steps into the long-awaited plans of her taking over her uncle’s partnership in an animal clinic now that he is retiring. The only hiccup is that Ivan, the partner, is also the cute guy she just met at the town coffee shop. Madison is determined to focus on her career and doesn’t think working Ivan will be a problem especially since they clash all the time - but the chemistry is off the charts and he is starting to open up. This story is full of all my favorite romance elements - witty banter, a sassy MC, small town vs city vibes and two characters who can’t help developing feelings.

If you love closed door romances - definitely check this one out!

Cute and Sweet

Synopsis:
After being cheated on, Madison moves out from the Big City and goes to a small-town, help her uncle in the Vet Clinic. But Ivan, the other vet, isn't very happy with this change. Will they be able to put their differences aside to make the clinic thrive?

Includes:
✨Enemies to Lovers
✨Cinammon Roll Hero
✨Cute Animals
✨Small Town Vibes
✨Meddling Family

🔥Heat Level:
Just Kisses

My opinion:
I liked the pace of the story, the 'enemies' part wasn't crazy and you can see how they slowly overcome their problems, also the chemestry wasn't out of proportion, was realistic and I aprecciate that.
Ivan is really sweet (and I also love men in glasses 😏), Madison is relatable and the side characters are very funny.
It's a feel good sweet story,I liked it.

“My mom’s face illuminated with a bright smile. “Ay, she’s making plans to see us again.” My mom claps excitedly, looking at Tía Emma. “¡Se van a casar!” my mom yells. I cover my face and slide down in my chair, thankful that Madison doesn’t understand Spanish in this moment.”

A RomCom full of Spanglish, funny animals, forced proximity, meddling family members. You can’t ask for much better than that! An easy five star read.

I actually finished this a little while ago and it's given me a bit of time to think about this one.

It started off so promising. I enjoyed the rivalry between Madison and Ivan as the two of them tried to figure out how to work with one another. I also liked the dual POV, Ivan possibly more so than Madison.

I enjoyed the slow transition between rivals to friends, but then it hit the half way mark and everything went from 0 to 100 very quickly which felt a bit jarring and unrealistic.

The Nice Guy has been the first romance in a long time without spice which I thoroughly enjoyed.
