After surviving a terror attack that took her husband, Lucy is trying to rebuild her life for her two teenage children. She makes the decision to move them all to an off-grid mountain community.
Away from the insanity their life had become, their temporary solution becomes a permanent way of living. Lucy believes she is giving her kids the perfect life, and a way of living that they truly want.
Until the day her son, Vincent, decides to leave without saying a word.
Lucy and her daughter, Avery, leave their secluded life to search for him in the nearby town. But what they find is nothing short of shocking.
Everyone is dead and there is no sign of Vincent.
Soon Lucy learns that it isn’t just the town of Piedmont, it is everywhere. A fast-moving phenomenon sweeps across the globe, pushing mankind to extinction and allowing only a few to survive.
Lucy pushes on in her search for her son, but can she find him before he crosses paths with the anomaly…or is it already too late?
2.5 I managed to read it all in one day but it felt a lot more disjointed than other books of hers. I don’t feel like I was really invested in any of the characters which is really unusual. She almost always manages to kill someone off I love, and this was just meh.
I just love most books from this author…anytime I have kindle unlimited which I get randomly when it’s free for 3 months, I try to read as many of her books as I can.
Enjoyed the story, but took off one star for the distraction of so many grammatical and spelling errors in the last few chapters. Although, much fewer typos that some of the author's earlier works. Good stories and worth reading.
This novel was exactly what I had expected - an apocalyptic tale of a mother fighting for the lives of her children in an uncertain landscape. What I liked was that the author didn't overcomplicate things with unnecessary narration or extraneous characters that play no part in the overall narrative. The story flowed well, I just wish the explanations of what was happening had been a little clearer and more succinct. I'm still not quite sure what caused the apocalyptic happenings.
A major drawback to this book were the numerous errors. At least once a page, sentences didn't flow, incorrect grammar was used, etc. It felt almost as if the an unedited copy had been uploaded to the Kindle store. I don't fault the author for making those mistakes - we all do and it's part of the writing process. I just wish they had been caught before publication.
All in all, this was definitely a book I was able to finish with ease and enjoy along the way. I will definitely read another book by this author in the future.
Good story if you can get past the self centered naive main character. She lived such a blessed life before the event, even with the event that ruined her life, it left her a bit entitled and pretty stupid to how humans work. For all her going on about what a tough upbringing she had, it fell flat. I can't help but wonder if the author did any research by actually talking to someone who had a foster care back ground. Most are not trusting.... I really just wanted to see how the plot would be solved. That is the only reason I finished the book. I won't bother with any more following this one. This book left me kind of disgusted by her flippant behavior toward others and the event that occurred. Don't worry about anyone else in the world only thing that matters is her family. Half hoped she would die.
Liked this book but I am certainly going to need some more. My interest is peaking on what is going to happen in this world. Always enjoy Jacqueline Drugas books.
Quick reading, a different take on post-apocalypse, compelling, and crappy editing.
Despite the poor editing, I enjoyed the book. Lucy is the relentless "Mama Bear" as she tries to find her son who inexplicably left their off-grid home in the mountains - a place he apparently really liked. Leaving their home in a quest for her son, she discovers that everyone is dead. How, well it would appear to be an attack of some sort infecting everyone with a fungal infection that manifests as sores all over the body, followed by death. While still alive, they are crazy violent.
The story is similar to the Omega Man or I am Legend in that the creatures hide from the light and are crazed. Lucy even reminisces about that fact in the book.
A decent ending, but clearly leads to a second book. We will see if that happens and I will probably read that book too.
Jacqueline Druga quickly became one of my favourite authors last year, and I'm trying to make my way through all of her books 😂.
I really enjoyed reading this one. The pacing was just right, and the characters were well developed. They were relatable, and their reactions and behaviours were very believable.
I loved how Lucy kept fighting to find her son and her friends despite the setbacks and the lack of answers. Her grief was palpable.
I was curious about the bunker and if the scientists there were able to create a cure or not.
The ending was good, but there were some errors towards the end.
I feel bad for saying this, because I’m sure this author put her heart into this book, but this was very poorly written.
There were numerous spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors. I was actually shocked to see that this author has other published works. The sentence and paragraph structure was so far off, it actually distracted me from what was going on in the, frankly, incoherent storyline.
With self-publishing so common these days, I realize that the editorial process isn’t as astringent as it once was, but this was hard to take. Just because anyone can write a book nowadays, doesn’t mean they should.
I really enjoyed this book. Like everything else I've read by Jacqueline Druga, it is totally different from anything else I've read. I would totally recommend it and anything else she's written. I hope there's a book 2 in the future. Unless it means Beginnings has to wait! ;-)
3 stars just because the author is from Pittsburgh. I keep trying to like her work but find that her work in the apocalyptic genre is weak. The characters in this one seemed silly, the plot seemed silly, and the conclusion silly. The writing seems geared to a more juvenile reader. And this one like others co rained a few grammatical errors, missing words and typos.
I like the way Jacqueline Drugs writes. The story flows logically. Good detail but no going on and on and on with the descriptions. I do get annoyed with mothers who are incredibly closed minded when searching for loved ones. But that's what makes the story. On to book 2 now to hopefully find out who done it.
Did anyone proofread this book? There are so many spelling errors and missing words! It was very annoying. On the good side, though, it was a decent storyline. The ending was a bit of a letdown because there was no actual determination of what caused the event.
Good story line. Interesting characters. A series of terror attacks and then a mysterious haze kills the majority of the nation . Survivor's have emerged but some have been affected by it . They are angry and out for blood . It's now a game of cat and mouse . Definitely worth reading.
I don’t think I’ve ever given a 3 star rating, sorry , I guess I’ve just been lucky. I love apocalyptic type books, but found this one disappointing, when a friend asked me to explain why , all I could say was it was too much in a little time frame and no real ending. It felt unfinished !
I have never finished a worse book. Full of typos and continuity errors, but such an intriguing storyline that I wanted to continue… although in the end, the occurrences of the book are not even explained. Shallow characters, a linear timeline, and the worst storytelling I have ever experienced. Someone ought to rewrite this and give the idea what it deserves.
This is a really brilliant story! Great ideas, characters & overall style which I found very appealing! Grabbed me from the first page & I will riveted until the very end! A really great read! I do recommend this authors work, always a super read!
This was a great beginning to what I hope to be a series. The characters are interesting and I look forward to learning more about each one. The story line was interesting and unique. I look forward to reading more about these people.
It was what I. Are to expect. I wonderful read. Engrossing from beginning to end. Well thought out characters and great plot twists. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon with good company
Not blown away with "After the Haze" I'm afraid. The story line was ok but I didn't find much strength in the characters. The grammatical errors didn't help either. It was easy to read which I did in one pickup but that's about all I can say about it.
Very, very good story. I loved it and the cast of characters was awesome. Once Ms Druga got me interested she latched on to me and I couldn't put it down. Great book. I recommend reading this to all that love fiction.
The premise was good, but after extensive storyline and character development, the ending just fell flat. There were also an embarrassing amount of spelling/grammatical errors (unsure if this was limited to e-book version).
I believe this is my first book by this author and I was pleased. It moved quickly yet never felt rushed. A few typos and small errors but overall very solid. She packed a lot of story inot one very good read.
I love Jacqueline Druga and this was a good book but I didn’t care much for the ending. I felt like there was so much build up and then she skimped out on the ending. Not like her usual characters/books.
Somehow they narrowly escaped, that had to be the explanation. I scanned the rubble with the flashlight of my phone until my battery died. I didn’t find them or see them. They were somewhere and I prayed they weren’t one of the dead.
I like this author, she’s very creative and very thorough. There were some grammatical errors and mistakes. However, overall I would give it four stars.
Druga develops believable characters that are relatable. The plot was unique in apocalyptic fiction and interesting. I liked that she didn’t feel the need to create evil in the healthy survivors.
