And to do it, he's resurrected the fanatical Sin-Eater! As Spidey takes the beating of his life, it's time to bring the fight to Kindred - but will Peter be forced to consider the unthinkable? Even worse, Norman Osborn has returned! And a literal army of super villains - including Boomerang, Kingpin, Tombstone, Chameleon and Jack O'Lantern - kicks off a Sinister War! This is a very brave move from the man that wrote himself into a corner with the image title Morning Glories!

Right from the first story arc I could not put down this book. Listen, finnished reading the whole thing in three sittings. First one was the shortest, then as the Sin-eater story arc got started I was hooked.

And as the story arcs progressed and the mystery unfolded itself further and further. I should´ve known that the answers was always right there... in the title

First off, this is more of a 3.5/5 and I’ll be treating this as a review of Nick Spencer’s run on ASM as a whole rather than just the issues included in the second half of this omnibus. Spencer’s take on Spider-Man was the first ever run that I have completed from start to finish (jumped around but never read all of JMS’s). Most people online would tell you that Spencer starts hot but trails off towards the final end of his run with the event of Sinister War. I hate to parrot or blindly agree with online opinions, but for the most part, I’d have to agree. I think everything in collected editions 1-4 (2018 issues #1-23) is peak and exactly what you hope for in a Spider-Man story. Trying to go into as little spoiler territory as possible I think the Sin-Eater arc and a couple after this initial run do well also. While still not trying to go into spoilers, I can say that I do applaud Spencer for retconning two of the biggest missteps taken with Spider-Man in the JMS run and on an unrelated note for writing very good versions of MJ and Black Cat. Not to mention I am a big fan of all the art in this thing, all the artists have meddled with perfection in here. Unfortunately I also have to agree with the folks online who have more negative things to say. The main overarching villain is a mysterious being connected w/Spider-Man’s past known as Kindred, and while compelling at first I really do think they dropped the ball with them. While I did mention earlier that I appreciated the retconning, I do feel like it was done in a very convoluted way (but not my biggest issue). I also feel like Chameleon’s storyline was sort of pointless or could have been wrapped up way quicker/easier and yes the ending Sinister War event isn’t anything to write home about. All things considered though, I did have a fun time with this era of Spider-Man and looking at what we’ve had since, I do miss it. Looking forward to Hickman’s ultimate Spider-Man run

Nick Spencer did a fantastic job re-establishing the status quo for Spider-Man with his new roommates, losing his company, and also renewing his relationship with Mary Jane. He also fixed a lot of things like Spider-Man's relationship with Felicia Hardy. The second half of the book mostly deals with deconstructing with this, including the Kindred as well as Sin-Eater plots. It's a lot darker and I hate things like the Sinister War but most of it is really good. Sadly, all good things have to come to an end.

Look Dan Slott is a real tough act to follow. I think Dan Slott REMAINS a tough act to follow. I just finished this book like just now and am still unclear on… like a lot? But I also read this MASSIVE book more or less over a weekend. I had fun!

Not much to love in this overstuffed collection of drawn out melodrama with the Sin Eater and Kindred, then Indiana Jones via Boomerang- lots of interesting ideas but none of them click. Some decent art but too many different styles make for a mess of a book

A mess but I love it anyway, tbh, it’s for die hard spider fans and even then ASM has been divisive since Ine More Day. Your mileage may vary greatly.
