January 2025 update: Just re-reading a 676 page fic to kick off the new year. As one does.
Upping this to 5 stars on re-read because it stood up much better when I read it on its own, rather than sandwiched between two other (very different) lettered Drarrys. While Another Mask Behind You is still my favorite, I think on re-read this edges out By the Grace; but really, there are no losers here.

Legit obsessed now.

4 instead of 5 stars only to separate it from By the Grace and Another Mask Behind You, both of which I loved incrementally more.

This was so cleverly structured, so painful, so emotional. And in true fic fashion, I loved how the whole potion . . . crime . . . thing was there strictly as set-up and catalyst and then dropped to focus on the interiority and the emotional journey. How is this so good?????

[Note -- this is virtually no heat, as, given the set-up, it should be; but there is a 9000 word smutty epilogue called Friends At Last, HURRAY!]

This one started out really strong, but I kind of lost interest about halfway through. The explanation of the age potion was so confusing that I was a come-to-life version of that conspiracy theory meme. It made no sense to me and I kind of checked out after that. Plus, we went through Harry deaged, so Draco felt like overkill. I would have loved to see more of the actual casework in this casefic and less of Draco's internalized homophobia. The resolution of the case felt rushed.

This story absolutely gutted me. It was phenomenal. I think I ran the full emotional gauntlet, and I can honestly say it was worth it.

There are some spoilers here. If you don't want spoilers, all I can say is that this was one of the better stories I've read this year, strongly character driven and with a great plot to boot. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes fanfic or HP at all.

This is a novel-length HP fanfic in which Harry is an auror, aged 31; Draco is a specialized potions purveyor, aged 32. While investigating a case, having towed Draco, Harry accidentally spills a de-aging potion on himself and is mentally and physically regressed to his 10 year old self. And so stars the book, with Draco trying to figure out what went wrong, having to reassure a scared young Harry who has no idea that magic exists, and having to try to find a way to reverse the potion effects.

This story is roughly split into three parts: part one has Harry at 10 years old, learning about magic for the first time, dealing with his Dursley induced trauma and neglect, and melting adult Draco's heart. The second part covers their lives from after-Hogwarts until the accident: the first time Harry met Draco again after the trial, all the times he called upon him for potions help with cases, etc. The last part is the most complex: Draco made a temporary solution which transferred his life years to Harry, and thus Draco is reduced to age 11 and Harry returns to age 31. He has to figure out the cure, which involves aging up Draco by one year every few hours to days, and he has to take care of Draco while he relives all the worst moments of their teenage years together.

The first part made me cry multiple times: seeing Harry's trauma responses, not understanding what it is like to have parents or even someone who loves and cares for you. This Harry also has dyslexia and stunted emotional growth, both of which change Draco's heart for the better when he realizes he isn't this perfect, rich, famous hero he had thought he was. I love child-Harry. He is so open, willing to let his heart show, still has capacity for love he hasn't entirely eradicated. It is beautiful to see how Draco cares for him at his most vulnerable moments.

The second part gave both Harry and Draco time to shine as an adult. I think most fanfics would have written this middle part and left it at that, and it would have been a great story. With the added age-warping, though, this part mostly serves to show why both of them can be more open to their opposites child selves, how they got to a place where they really benefit from that age warp. It also showed their tempestuous relationship throughout the decade, how they went from bitter enemies who couldn't empathize with one another at all, to a point where they both realize they care for one another but are unable to speak up.

The last part resumed the telling right at the end of the first part - when Draco put his temporary solution on the both of them, transferring his years. Adult-Draco had left a letter and a book behind, which he wrote to Harry to help him solve the problem permanently. And also left a young-Draco right there, for adult him to deal with with no preparation. It, and the following chapters, were a beautiful mirror to the beginning of the story: Harry doesn't believe he has magic, he is actually in his 30s, or that the Dursleys are all old, until Draco proves it to him. Draco immediately believes that he is actually 32. Harry is mesmerized by Mister Malfoy, with his magic tricks and interesting food. Draco is a spoiler brat who already knows how to do basic magic, doesn't want to be around Harry much, assumes a lot of things, and turns his nose up at all the food.

And yet, they're both so vulnerable, young, needing attention, love, care, and most of all the other person to be there. Adult-Draco promised Harry they would be friends when all this was over, if he still wanted it. So Adult-Harry promised Draco that, yes, they were friends. Through the bullying, through the teasing, abusing, sectumsempra, through the literal hate and pain and heaps of offenses they committed against one another, I think clinging to that hope that maybe the next time he wakes up, Draco would finally be friends with Harry. And yet, it takes him 20 times of waking up, having suffered horribly every time, to finally realize that they will be friends when it's all over.

It broke my heart over and over and over again.

The one fault I have for this story is that the ending felt so abrupt. When they're finally back to their normal ages, reunited in person, all I wanted was a few pages of them being together. Instead it's a very short HEA. This story sorely needed an epilogue set a bit into the future.

Anyway, I'm probably going to go read it all over again now.

not to sound dramatic but i do think the muses sent Evil Terf Lady the vision of Boy Wizard so some day people like ao3 user lettered could write about him more proficiently and profoundly than she ever could 🙏🙏🙏

i must have read this when it was first published (i've been a fan of lettered's for years) and i know it's a fan-favorite, but coming back to it i can't say i remembered more than the de-aging premise, which did not really appeal. to be honest i have no idea what prompted me to give it another shot, but i am really glad i did, not just because it's a nearly* perfect work of art, but because it made me realize why i was so annoyed at Yield Under Great Persuasion! it's the fact that it's a frothy, fun little fantasy romance (unobjectionable) that tries to add depth by mentioning the protagonist's great pain and loneliness and how he has backed himself into a corner by being emotionally closed off (also theoretically unobjectionable), BUT it does so in the most "telling and not showing" way possible (objectionable).
and it's not that i think that in order to write believable characters you need to have everyone be mired in 10 layers of trauma, it's that vaguely gesturing at trauma and alienation while doing nothing to explore the genesis of these emotional states (beyond "he smashed my pumpkin when we were 9" lol) is just... i won't say bad writing bcs i don't actually think Alexandra Rowland is a bad writer. but definitely not the kind of writing i want to see when an author tackles this subject matter!

all of this to say - man, can lettered write trauma!!! it feels almost silly to describe this by one of its tags, but it really is hurt/comfort in its truest form, isn't it? and ofc lettered is a master of all things h/c and whumpy, but i can't believe they had the galaxy brain take "harry should heal his inner child...but like, literally" and made it work?? floored by the depth of understanding of how the human mind works and the various psychological processes that get set in motion (or get stunted!) according to the kind of love you receive (or don't!!!) by the adults in your life when you're an impressionable and vulnerable kid.
incredibly insightful to focus not on the chosen one bullshit harry goes through in books but on the wholly separate (or is it??) trauma of being an abused, neglected, (touch-)starved child. love love love that the result is a dysthymic cop who feels like he is a robot and not an actual person, cos if he was a person he'd know how to feel things and provide comfort to people around him and be emotionally functional! when in fact babe how are u *supposed* to know these things, you were raised IN A CUPBOARD???
and then ofc to recognize that he is not in fact a soulless automaton, he needs not only to be taken care of as a little kid, but to take care of someone in turn - hence the switch-up with the de-aged draco! ahhhh the baby draco stuff was SO GOOD, cos his underlying issues are so different to harry's, but so heartbreaking nonetheless. i think that the canon version of draco (racist posh bully who bites off more than he can chew and lives to regret it) is juuust enough of a blank canvass for a good writer to really go to town with it, and my god does lettered go to town. truly cannot overstate how much i like the way lettered wrote kid!draco. will not be going into further detail so as to avoid spoilers but!! let it be known that i stan!!!
i just think the underlying premise - that childhood trauma and/or introjection WILL fuck you up, and that in order to get better you need to internalize the fact that kid!you deserved unconditional love and that it was not your fault if you didn't get it - is incredibly powerful and important and true. also i need to get back into therapy lmao. nothing like a lettered story to remind you of how fucked up you are, too! ah, the power of fanfic!!

*lettered proves they are an actual human writer and not an otherworldly genius by the fact that they simply cannot write Plot ☠️☠️ you will read 150k words of the most poignant (inter)personal pain imaginable and then the actual plot will be resolved in two dry expository paragraphs along the lines of "harry found out that the smuggling ring had originally been based in croydon, but was moved to fulham after the crooked aurors got in on the smuggling. he alerted minister shacklebolt about the corruption within auror ranks, after which all the suspects were suspended pending inquiries." the most inane, first draft kind of writing you've ever read! incredible stuff.

“Don’t.” Harry made himself swallow his tears back, the choked little sob that was threatening. “Don’t say that you were a burden. I loved you—all through it. Do you understand? I loved all of you.”

“First of all, I’ve always wanted you to touch me. Always. My whole life. Both lives—the one from these past three weeks and the other one, ever since I was eleven. Sometimes I wanted to make you angry enough to hit me, Potter. Just so I could have you touch me.”

Oh my god this was so good. It’s literally 2:53am and I’m so exhausted but this was so good.

Harry and Draco dealing with each other’s younger self was so horrifically adorable. Younger Harry was so sassy I love him, Draco finding out about his treatment at the Dursley’s shattered my heart. Younger Draco’s self loathing hurtttt. Ugh it was just so emotional, I’m crying rn.

It was so sweet. I’m so glad they remembered everything and now they can be together 🥲

I felt this story in my heart. Every single word, I felt in my heart. The way Harry and Draco go about their life post war and how their upbringing defines them and how their perception of one another changes when they are de-aged and learn about each of their childhoods and the innocence of them as kids. I just.... My heart.... This story just gave me everything.

I 1000000% recommend this!

Very plot-driven, which is not generally my thing. However, it has truly excellent characterization, fantastic writing, and such a nuanced and thoughtful look at how parental expectations can truly do a mind-fuck on us. Wish there had been a bit more time on the HEA, but that isn't what this story is about.

Away Childish Things: ★ ★ ★ ★ . 7 5

lettered

Tropes:
– Draco/Harry fanfiction
– Accidental spell (de-aging)
– Forced proximity
– Romantic suspense

Oh my god, this is the most healing book I’ve ever read. Wow.

First of all, seeing how Draco handled a young Harry and learning about how he was treated his entire life and all of these various issues that he never knew about before it was the most wholesome and incredible thing I have ever witnessed. The growth that you see Draco have and his realizations are everything and the way that Draco would literally protect Harry from the entire world was phenomenal. Plus, Harry's indignation at age 10 that they are friends no matter what anyone thinks or says and that they will always be... LIKE COME ON! I literally think that the first third of the story will stick with me for the rest of my life.

Just reading the premise I was so skeptical about this book because I didn’t understand how it would come together, but it was amazing. Truly amazing. I highly recommend this to all!

There's a 9K word SMUT epilogue to this called "Friends at Last" that was an amazing addition too–just so tender and pure and lovely.

"Don't." Harry made himself swallow his tears back, the choked little sob that was threatening. "Don't say that you were a burden. I loved you - all through it. Do you understand? I loved all of you."

i'll admit i was skeptical of a de-aging fic. what's so special about getting the chance to take care of your former enemy as a 11-year old? what could it possibly add to the story? spoiler alert, it adds alot.

you will see them in a way no one else has ever seen them. you will experience all the trauma, insecurity and fear they have ever felt, without being told. you will experience how deprived of love they were, and offer the child version of them the love they deserved. it will be an unflinching and unconditional sort of love. and above everything, they will understand. is there anything more intimate than being understood?

a very unique technique used for the 'get to know each other better' part of the fic, and i thought it was very well executed.

I spent a total of 13 hours reading this!!! I love fics!!!!! I love reading!!!!! I love books!!!!!! I’M FEELING A LOT

“I remember you, Harry. I’m sorry I said you were perfect. You’re just as fucked as I am, aren’t you? The bright side is, you have me, and I’ll take care of you. I’m very good at taking care of people, Harry. You’ll see.”
Now Draco sounded like he was eleven and thirty-two, so much so that Harry let out a choked laugh.”

“Don’t.” Harry made himself swallow his tears back, the choked little sob that was threatening. “Don’t say that you were a burden. I loved you—all through it. Do you understand? I loved all of you.”

This book warmed my soul! Unfortunately I think I have developed an attachment to fictional Draco, but what can you do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pros: the way the author wrote young Harry/Draco, especially Draco bc he tries to use all these big words and simply cannot ; the continuation of world building from canon

Cons: Generally the drug ring/potion plot was kind of confusing….also I did feel some type of way re the age gap and perhaps this could’ve been mitigated just by Harry/Draco seeing eachother at like 18 and younger by looking through a pensieve instead of experiencing it “in person” and while they were still 32.
