Think badass female Sherlock Holmes with some pride and prejudice era vibes and propriety, and some Dresden files good vs. evil vibes. And add secret magic, elves, dwarves, and the lost fae!
This was such an enjoyable read! You easily fall in love with the characters. The world building was beautiful and easy to get into. There’s no cliffhanger but there are some loose threads at the end that will lead into an exciting series that I can’t wait to read the rest of.
Highly recommend!

I absolutely adored this book. Lady Gwen is fantastic! I love her heart, her humor, and her tenacity. Her interactions with different people are so well done.
Sally and Aristotle were two other favorites of mine. I'd like a raven as a sidekick!
I hope we see more of Delilah and the Duchess in the next books, they seem delightful (and I hope Gwen starts trusting her mama more, I think that she'd be a huge asset). And, of course, Inspector Hardwicke is a fantastic counterpart for our brave and saucy lead.
The story is engaging and witty, it made me laugh out loud multiple times. It flows incredibly well and has fun twists and turns (not entirely surprising ones, for those that need a complete surprise at the end, but great all the same). I greatly enjoyed the connection between Lady Gwen and the children. The world building is immaculate, but not over-explained. The magic and its "rules"are handled very well and are consistent. Clearly a lot of thought went into New London.
The only thing I had a slight issue with was the amount of past secrets Lady Gwen has. It felt a little burdensome when included with the kidnappings and the overall plot of this mystery. I assume they were merely an establishment and we will get more info as the series continues. One was used to set-up what I assume will be a connecting plot, so it gets fleshed out a bit, and the other big secret is used to explain Lady Gwen's lack of concern with her peer's opinions, but again, it felt a little excessive at times. There was certainly enough fun to not need such justifications. I am looking forward to getting more of the tea though!

What a fun ride. I enjoyed the world building & Gwen is just great. The "Dresden Files meets Parasol Protectorate" is perfectly accurate. I can't wait for more of this series!

Thank you to the author for accepting me onto her ARC team so I could leave an honest review! This brings to mind the Parasol Protectorate and Enola Holmes. I adored it.
This is the first book in a series about Gwen, a lady of privilege who is far more interested in learning, traveling, and doing the right thing. High society finds her unpalatable despite the lofty position her birthright affords. When she stumbles upon an attempted kidnapping, she brings home the young orphan and her brother while investigating. She tries to juggle her well-meaning mother attempting to find her a beau, the handsome but grumpy Inspector who finds her presence suspicious, and the escalating kidnappings plaguing the city. Gwen and a delightful cast of characters bring humor and charm to this lovely little tale.
This was so well written. I just devoured this and I could not put it down once things got moving. The world-building was interesting; this is a gaslight fantasy with dwarves, elves, and magic. It has charming humor and witty banter. The main character and the secondary ones are delightful. I honestly cannot wait to see what happens next. I have so many questions lingering after this book that I need to know, so I hope the next one comes out soon!

This book was exactly what I needed to save me from the dreaded slump that I was diving head first into. Gwen was the perfect FMC, and I absolutely adored her! The side characters were all fantastic as well. The dialogue, humor, and banter was spot on. There’s even a friendly raven companion. The plot was engaging and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. There’s magic, elves, dwarves, witches, and some other magical creatures thought to be long gone. Looking forward to the next books on the series.

I was given this ebook as an ARC. It has another week or so before it's released. It is a first in a series and therefore has a few cliffhangers at the ending.
I really enjoyed the characters and the plot runs very smoothly. It's not very complicated and not very predictable. There are witches, dwarves that practice artifice, and a very cool talking raven called Aristotle. I'm not going to spoil the plot but the protagonist, Gwen St James has learned about magic and has to solve the case of the missing children. She behaves against societies elite class standards and has everyone's attention including mine. I really enjoyed this book and am honored to be able to read the ARC.

Strong female lead awesome supporting characters and a bird friend… what more could you want? I really enjoyed this story and am eagerly awaiting the next installment! I was a bit worried when I started it as I have currently been reading a different genre and that can sometimes cause me issues but this story sucked me right in!
The stakes were a little high for me to rate it a cozy book but it was right there with the feels the characters and their interactions had! Is there such thing a a high stakes cozy read? If so this is it!
Would highly recommend to anybody in the mood for something fun, adventurous and heart warming!

There are aspects of this book that are so original and others that are cliche. It took me a while to invest in the story. Those cliche bits are more in the beginning and I found myself rolling my eyes at some parts.
However, at that 50% mark I was invested! The flow was perfect and the characters were their best flawed selves. I am excited for book two because of what was established by the end of the book.

dnf at 36% 🙃
I think I overhyped myself for this particular book due to just finishing a rewatch of The Alienist and Miss Scarlet and The Duke before starting to read it... I kept reading and then stopping and then coming back to it in hopes of something finally happening, somethign finally making the characters more than a dull blob which spews out even duller words. Sadly, that was not the case.
I probably should have dnf-ed it after realising the book is going to be told from multiple perspective and from a first person view - writing a first person pov and making it both readable and interesting is damn difficult, and my brain just couldn't process this particular bad attempt at juggling it. But yeah, I read in some reviews that things start to happen halfway through the book and tbh, I don't have time to wait that long (especially when there isn't a single character that has caught my interest to make the waiting worth it)

The story follows Lady Gwen St. James as she searches for clues to solve a mystery after witnessing a crime and noticing strange magical symbols at the crime scene.
Her investigation places her right in the path of a certain Scotland Yard detective, and the two clash in hilarious fashion. This was a fast-paced, fun gaslamp fantasy (fantasy x historical fiction). If you love the Victorian-era fantasy of the works of Charlie Holmberg, and the intersection of magic and crime in the vein of the Dresden Files, then this book is for you! It's a fast-paced and enjoyable read that was immersive, rich, and engaging. There are humans, dwarves, fae, and elves. Lady Gwen is bold, brave, and fully developed, and the other POV character Sally is a witty delight. I can't wait for the second book.

The world and character building was very well done and very organic. Dwarves, witches, elves, and fae roaming around turn-of-the-century London? I totally believe it! Edwardian London is one of those eras that, I think, we all recognize and visualize well.
Gwen is the kind of woman we all strive to be, independent, intelligent, resourceful, badass, great wardrobe, and wealthy!
I'm so glad this is only the beginning of a series, because there is so much more to unpack with this cast of characters and their stories. I'm even happier it's all already written and we won't have to wait a year for the next story.

This book is exactly what I’ve been looking for!! I found all of the characters lovely!! It’s always nice to see such a strong female character defy normal gender roles. Aristotle was my absolute favorite of the book. I can not wait to read the next book!!

Gwen St. James, the main character, is a force to be reckoned with - a blend of Mary Poppins' charm and Sherlock Holmes' keen intellect. She is a protagonist who grabs your attention from the very first page and doesn't let go. Her determination and resourcefulness kept me eagerly reading, anxious to see how she would unravel the mysteries at hand.
The well-developed characters in Vanished were a highlight for me. Each character had their own unique personality and motivations, making them feel like real people with whom I formed emotional connections. This book is a duel POV between our MFC Lady Gwenevere St. James and Young Sally. Each chapter is notated at the top with the name of the character whose POV you're currently reading which I appreciated SO much! Lady Gwen is tenacious, funny and caring and I found myself quickly endeared to her as she searched London in this Gaslamp fantasy in search of missing children. I consider his book low to medium stakes since there's nothing super stressful like world changing events or full out war but there is some political tension and societal gossip. You get the feel of a historical fiction, fantasy and mystery all rolled into one.
I found Nicole McKeon via Tiktok and she said she hoped this world was something similar to The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger and she did not disappoint. Inventions, witty banter, found family, and while this doesn't have a full HPE there is a fulfilling and slightly bittersweet ending that leaves readers wanting more. I begged Nicole to be a Beta reader for book 2 because I honestly couldn't get enough! I'll absolutely be buying a hardback copy and placing this book on my shelf designated for cozy re-reads.

Great storytelling. This was an amazing start to this series. The characters are lovable and built very well. It was engaging and I couldn’t put it down!

When she finds herself the witness to a kidnapping she notices some strange symbols at the scene of the crime. She finds herself compelled to get to the bottom of the mystery and find the kidnapped young girl before it’s too late.
When she reports the crime to Scotland Yard, she finds herself under suspicion for being part of the kidnapping. Her determination finds her continuously running into the Inspector as more and more kidnappings take place. Will they work together or will she be arrested?

I got this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and honestly? I loved it. If it were an option, I’d probably rate it 4.5/5 as opposed to 5, but rounded up.
This gas lamp fantasy is the first book in the Gwen St. James Affair and combines the high society politics of New London and the magic of fae, dwarves, and elves. The story is interesting, well written, and makes me want to know more about all the characters, especially Gwen. Anxiously awaiting book two!

I want to give this 4.5 stars but Goodreads doesn’t give that option.
Okay, this books gave me major Enola Holmes vibes but add magic. This books was so unlike anything I’ve read, it was unique and engaging.
Gwen is the FMC, she’s 25 years old but feels wise beyond her years. While she’s had trauma in her past and is marked as an outcast in society, she is so sure of herself. It’s refreshing to see a character so intelligent, steadfast and quirky. Like I seriously want to be her when I grow up.
Gwen discovers that orphaned children are being kidnapped and magic is at play. Elves and Dwarves live openly in the city (while fighting for equal rights) but the magic she uncovers is unlike anything she’s seen before. After saving a girl from being kidnapped, she takes her and her brother under her wing and vows to save the other children.
She tries to work with the suspicious (and hot) Inspector. She can’t help but tease the uptight man. They start off as adversaries and slowly warm up to allies. Ending up as friends (and hopefully to more?)
I won’t spoil anything but this book takes you on a JOURNEY. There are so many moving parts (not in a distracting way, more like lots of puzzles pieces you’re trying to fit together). There’s so much dimension and intrigue to the story, it’s so hard to put down!
I love that it’s multi POV with Gwen and Sally, the girl that she saved from being kidnapped. I’m hoping we get more in the future, I’d love to see the Inspector’s POV of course.
It ends with some big plot points tied up but still with some major unanswered questions. It’s not a terrible cliffhanger, the major conflict in the book wrapped up, but connected storylines left open for the future book(s?).
Okay, this books gave me major Enola Holmes vibes but add magic. This books was so unlike anything I’ve read, it was unique and engaging.
Gwen is the FMC, she’s 25 years old but feels wise beyond her years. While she’s had trauma in her past and is marked as an outcast in society, she is so sure of herself. It’s refreshing to see a character so intelligent, steadfast and quirky. Like I seriously want to be her when I grow up.

This book was so different from anything else I have read before. This was my first gaslamp fantasy book and I loved it so much! The atmosphere and world building were done so well, and all of the characters were phenomenally written.
Gwen is everything and I would do anything for her. She is strong, and independent in a time where that wasn't accepted but she is unapologetic about it. She is cheeky and eccentric and one of my favorite FMC I have ever read about.
Gwen knows that she is a social pariah. She doesn't care what how people view her, but she also knows that it matters to other people so she does her best to not embarrass her friends. To do this she goes out to see people at night a lot. While she is out one night she witnesses a kidnapping that reminds her of her own missing sister. She is able to save one of the young girls, but one is taken by the kidnappers. When she finds out this is one is a series of kidnappings, Gwen sets out to figure out what is happening. She reports the crime to Scotland yard and ends up on the radar of investigator Hardwicke.
This book is cheeky and filled with laughs and maybe a couple tears, and did I mention, Gwen has a raven animal sidekick named Aristotle?
This is book 1 of the Gwen St James affair series, so not all loose ends are tied up by the end of the book, but there isn't a cliffhanger and all of the major plot lines are tied up really nicely.
I loved this book so much and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I received this book as an ARC from Ms. York in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly? It was absolutely amazing! I adored Sherlock Holmes growing up and this reminded me of those, with a good bit of fantasy and magic thrown in.
Gwen is so much fun and spunky, everything a female Holmes would be. I like her relationship development with the Tony as well. Unlike Sherlock there seems to not be a Dr. Watson (atleast not yet anyway, unless Tony is meant to fill that void).
Sally and Sam were wonderful additions to the cast of characters and seemed as real as any fictional characters I've read before.
I am very much looking forward to diving back into the world as Ms. York continues the story. This story is perfect for anyone, especially if you like Sherlock Holmes, fantasy and adventure.

I was really excited to read Vanished and let me tell you this book did not disappoint. It had me hooked from start to finish. Love Gwen, Sally, Sam, Aristotle and the inspector and I can’t forget Gwen’s mother. Love the way Gwen is with the Inspector. Their bickering, and the way she loves to make him uncomfortable. That part where Sally had me teary eyed for, it broke my heart for her. What we find out on who is taking the kids was not who I was inspecting and was not inspecting the reason for it either. That was just a big what the, what what for me. Thank you Nicole for an amazing book and I’m really excited to read more of this series!!!

Slow paced world building. This book has a little Bit of everything. Politics, romance, danger all with a VERY strong FMC. I’m excited to see where this universe goes and all of Gwen’s adventures!

4.5 stars. Gwen St. James is like a “cheekier” Mary Poppins mixed with a sarcastic female version of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes. This is not my typical genre but I enjoyed everything about this book. I can’t wait for the next book in the series! Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Lady Gwen, has your family issues... traveled and wants better for herself then what the world tells her she should accept because of her status in life. Wants the equality or at very least the realistic view of what the world is like to not be ignored in the world full of bias and hatred of different kinds. When she meets orphaned siblings one who is pulled into the magical world that she wanted to avoid just wanting to take care of her younger brother. Gwen sees the things others don't. The suttle things that others ignore or don't see. The thirst for knowledge while the need to make up for running from her past leads her on a journey of discovery and knowledge.

Not for me.
Never connected with the MC, really didn't like the love interest, and there were multiple aspects of the world that pulled me out of the story, like real people in our world somehow still existing in that one, and some things that weren't invented until after the gaslamp era (like the foxtrot). I know it's technically our world with magic, but when you're adding fantasy species as well, it just feels further removed that historical figures wouldn't necessarily exist there too.
I didn't really want to keep picking this book up, and it probably would've been a DNF if it hadn't been an ARC.

Amazing!
Wanted to start off with a thank you for the early access to read this gem, I appreciate it so very much.
Mix of Sherlock with magic and fantasy characters. Lady Gwen is the strong yet quirky and lovable main character who easily gets your attention and love. My favorite thing about this book is the character development and the fact that you get so easily attached and interested in the main ones. The story is amazing, and once you get background information and realize why she does what she does, it makes you love her even more. There's enough going on that your interest is peaked, and it keeps you wanting to know what will happen next without overwhelming you. If you like Sherlock, fantasy, magic, and mystery solving, with a quirky character whose attitude and sass are relatable, then absolutely pick this up. Also, I'm not gonna spoil much, but Aristotle is a huge plus to the story. I guess you'll have to read to find out. I can't wait for the next one!
