The Pool

Rate this book
The city of Fenwood has thrived under the rule of its beloved Queen, but each day she grows weaker with age and sickness and seemingly no-one can save her. Her daughter, Ivy, has always shied away from her responsibilities and now appears unaware of her duty, turning instead to the pull of the natural world outside of the city boundaries and a growing romance after a chance encounter. As evil, corruptive forces manoeuvre their way into the city, Ivy must choose between love and responsibility, as death and destruction threaten to tear Fenwood apart.

I REALLY struggled to get into this book.

I’m not sure if it was mainly because I’d just finished the ACOTAR series or because nothing really happened until 100 pages into this 152 pager!

It was quite predictable (IME) and outside of this is was also quite confusing with the constant POV jumps

But don’t let my opinion on it dissuade you from giving it a go, as you might like it and it’s only 152 pages.

I’d rate this book 3.5 stars.
The Pool is an incredibly descriptive story that definitely grabs you from the get go! The main characters are also extremely likeable. The world building is so vivid which definitely helps set the story up and makes this book super immersive.

My only complaint is it got a little confusing with the character povs changing with no clear indication of when they’d actually changed. It sometimes made the story feel a little jumpy. I would’ve loved chapters from one pov at a time

Over all, an enjoyable read:)

It would be dishonest of me to say this book falls into my normal genre of reading. But Richard paints such a vivid story with his writing that you feel like you’re in the market places with the characters, you feel like you can hear the pool sigh.

If you’re a fan of fantasy I would definitely recommend this book.
