Smith and Bea are back in London, and Smith might well be back to his old ways. Bea’s instincts are screaming, and Smith is disappearing. Something is certainly amiss, and he doesn’t want her meddling.
The story was good, but the editing detracted from enjoyable reading. Getting to “THE END” only to have the last several chapters repeated was annoying! This book was one of the shortest Smith Investigates book and this was with the repeated chapters!!! Someone needs to get their act together or risk losing readers.
This may be the last one of her books I read. 85 pages only and then to have the ending chapters repeat after The End. She is more capable of writing a really good book but I think she is rushing to get them done for the money. I'd rather see one good Vi and one good Smith a year instead of what have become short stories.
Horrible editing! Great story but impossible trying to navigate through duplicate sentences, and duplicate chapters. Left me feeling cheated of my time. You can do better with a middle school English student proofing!
I these characters and their friends. I get them the first day they come out and read them immediately. The plots are always complex and I rarely figure out the mystery before the main characters do. The humor and the intertwine between all the characters is excellent.
This book, though, had two incorrect names. The first was with Ella's and the second was with the facial expressions of baby Anna. It's discouraging for a writer like Beth Byers to make these beginner mistakes.
I have read all the Violet Murder Mysteries and then went to read the Smith Investigation series which are better because the plot and perspective are from a different point of view and so all have more depth and are more interesting to me. The Smith series has a progression of characters from the Violet Mysteries but the story is deeper and much less roaring 20’s fluff of wealth, glamour, booze and travel. Now that In have read all books in both series I look forward to what comes next from Beth Buyers!
I really enjoy the characters in this series and have read enough of the books to really get to know them. I especially like Beatrice who is so level headed and competent. All the books in both this series and the intertwined Violet Carlyle series are short and easy reads. This particular mystery didn't take long to figure out. As soon as I met the family of the victim, it was clear who was to blame, although it did take a little more reading to get a motive, but not much.
Beth Byers writes the most endearing characters in her Violet and her Smith series. The plot is so intriguing that it’s impossible to anticipate the ending. Even if you have a hint as to who the villain may be, you won’t ever figure out the why and how. I highly recommend both series, which have overlapping support casts.
Really enjoyed the book. Story kept me engaged all the way through. The last Carlyle book had me ready to give up…the characters I have fine to like were so nasty and hateful to one another. This book had all the main characters working together and caring for one another. I’m back in with the Smith and Carlyle crew!
This is getting tedious. Pushing novella length stories with more angst than substance. I would not spend money to buy this. A little time spent editing would be a huge improvement...maybe up to 3 stars. As is, it's borderline 1 star.
