READY... SET... MELT! From the depraved mind of Judith Sonnet, Toxic is a collection of nine short stories which explore the dark side of humanity. A dad on vacation faces massive monsters rising from the ocean... A crew of ghost hunters explore a disgusting "outhouse"... A damaged young man goes on a walk to visit his girlfriends... And a woman joins two greasers on a quest for vengeance--backlit by 1950's nostalgia.... Gore, horror, and darkness await you in this disturbed collection, featuring new and old stories from one of the most deranged authors on the market!
My queen has done it again with a collection of 9 stories that will have you laughing, cringing , gagging and more!!! If you’re not reading Judith Sonnet, you’re doing it wrong.
This was one of the few short story collections that literally sustained my attention throughout every story. I loved the mixture of extreme horror that traumatized me as well as just the regular horror and horror comedy mixed in. Innards-fuck, Toxic, The Cum House, and Cruising for Creeps were my favorites. Do yourself a favor and go find out what a cum house is. I’ll be taking no further questions at this time.
This is Judith’s best short story collection by far! It’s a fantastic showcase of her range as an author and a testament to her ability to craft fast-paced, compelling, and nasty narratives in almost every sub-genre of horror. Full Time Horror junkie is right; she’s the real deal. Every single story here was gripping and tense. The amount of vibes she managed to evoke (from frightening creature features, to atmospheric ghost tales, to bloody carnage-filled revenge) had me on an emotional rollercoaster. And her ability to craft actual human characters who sound like such distinct people never fails to surprise me. My favorite of the collection was Cum House and Cruising for Creeps; both have ostensible shades of Jack Ketchum and Edward Lee. Perhaps the two have a worthy heiress? 👀
These 9 stories were very unique in their own way and added their own “gore” to the theme. These stories were crafted to give the reader something to give nightmares about. I won’t go into the details to each of these stories but I’ll list my favorites; Cruising for creeps, Wee Gee, Toxic and An occasional portal. These stories were really good. The cum house was hard for me to stomach I really gagged while reading. Judith Sonnet writing style pushing beyond the normal boundaries and where other authors stop this is her starting point. I do enjoy her books and have been a fan since clown hunt! I’ll continue to read more of her books and have nightmares.
Judith, Judith, Judith.......Jesus Christ!! This little book will slap ya right upside the head!! Give ya a black eye and knock some teeth out and not give a damn. All 9 stories were a absolute fucking pleasure to read.
disgusting? brutal? we’re gonna need to invent some new words to keep up with judith! every single story in ‘toxic’ is a fantastic and fresh horror different from the last.. like a variety chip bag of nightmares, if you will. picking favorites is entirely too difficult for this one, but I have the softest spot for ‘an occasional portal’ and ‘toxic’. judith’s signature strength for body horror paired with her ability to flesh out (pardon the pun) truly dimensional characters in such a short amount of time really makes this collection pack a punch. definitely not for the faint of heart, but surely the newest must-have for splatterpunk fiends! p.s. I’ll never stop thinking about the end of ‘INNARDS-F*CK’..
Toxic is the new horror short story collection from acclaimed author Judith Sonnet. Judith has taken the horror community by storm with her unapologetic, barrier-crashing extreme horror stories, but this collection showcases her range.
For example, the first story, “An Occasional Portal,” is not the hardcore extreme horror tale one might expect. It’s a story about a man’s obsession with a mysterious door. That ending, though; that brilliant, unnerving ending is wonderfully, skillfully done.
The second story, “Innards-F**k,” however, should be served with a shot of mind bleach and is more inline with what we expect Judith to grace our shelves and wreck our brains with.
The title story, “Toxic,” by contrast, is a creature/kaiju tale that will emotionally devastate you as much as it will churn your insides. This one is intense, evocative, and horrifyingly impactful.
But then with “The Cum House,” you’re back to twisted extreme horror, and so on and so forth with stories of varying intensity, gross factor, and depth. A few even compelled me to exclaim out—oh God, that’s sick; that’s just wrong; oh my gosh, why?!—much to my husband’s amusement.
There are nine stories in all, each different from the last, but what they do have in common are those attributes Judith is certainly known for: strong characters, excellent characterization, and amazing endings.
If you have never had the disturbing pleasure of reading Judith Sonnet’s work, this is an excellent place to begin. For fans, this is an absolute must-have!
Extreme horror fans rejoice. Another excellent collection by Judith Sonnet! Nine stories, three of which appeared in her previous collection (now out-of-print), but, quite predictably, all three remain eminently readable, shocking, and far better than anything currently on the short story market. Some stories will produce revulsion ('The Cum House,' which made Ed Lee take a bath after reading it (it also has a reference to Sonnet's novella, 'Magick'); 'Anti-VaXXX,' about people who find diseases arousing - this one belongs up there with Jon Athan's 'The Gift' and Ed Lee's 'The Dritiphilist'!) Other stories have a cinematic flavor, though with a twist ('Innards,' 'Toxic,' 'Wee-Gee'), while some carry a lot of emotional baggage ('Cruising for Creeps'). This is a must-read for fans of the grotesque and the transgressive!
A great collection of horror stories with different ranges from comedic to bleak. Some personal favorites from the bunch were Toxic, Wee Gee and Cruising for Creeps.
This is the first Judith Sonnet book I was able to get my hands on, and I was not disappointed!
I remember when she announced on Twitter that she was going to start putting this collection together, and I am in awe at how quickly everything has moved since then, and at how brilliant the collection is.
I know Sonnet for her graphic, and very violent prose. While there were stories in the collection that catered to her splatterpunk skills, I found I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of themes and subgenres in these entries. Some were abstract and paranormal, while others were about the depravity of humans. One in particular was truly disgusting, meeting and surpassing my one expectation going into the collection.
The thing about single author collections with good variety is that not all of the stories are going to work for every reader. Even so, there was only one in the collection that I didn't find as entertaining as the others, while there were several that were my contenders for best story.
The titular "Toxic" was among my favorites, along with "Anti-VaXXX" and "Sally." Ultimately the story that I liked best and feel most compelled to highlight in the review was the closing tale; "Cruising for Creeps."
Though it was far from the most graphic of the stories, it had some of the most troubling events, paired with a very stylized, almost fun setting. That strange juxtaposition was so effective for me, and I really enjoyed the characters as well.
This being a five-star read, I am inclined to recommend it, though this is not without a couple of disclaimers. One is that you should definitely read the content warning. If you're sensitive to certain topics, or squeamish in any way, you may have to skip this collection. I'll also mention that it's a little rough around the edges in terms of editing/formatting. This didn't detract from my enjoyment of the vivid stories, but I know some people who would be put off by the occasional typo.
However, if you've been waiting to read Sonnet, I think this collection is a great exhibit of her range as a writer. It has a little bit of everything, from the eerie to the extreme. Every style tackled in TOXIC has been nailed, spot on.
I hope that more of her work comes to Godless so that I can pick it up. Judith Sonnet's name is enough to sell a book to me.
Anthologies are fun. Some thoughts: An Occasional Portal - it was solid. Nice way to start the book off more light-hearted creepy. 3/5
Innards Fuck - Standard short with a gross-out scene and nice twist. 3/5
What Are You Going to Do with Me? - Brutal and vile. Did not expect that coming, but man this one is sadistic, and probably the roughest of the collection. The trigger warnings mostly pertain to this one I'm assuming. 4/5
Toxic - Melty creature horror with an absolute tearjerker of a twist. I cannot believe this actually had me in tears. Bravo, Judith. You won me over here. 5/5 story all day. And then, of course, that makes an interesting segue into...
The Cum House - LOL. I mean, hilarious title, but the story is actually really good, too... and retains hilarity throughout. Some spooky ghosty stuff and a gnarly finale. 5/5
Anti-VaXXX - Very interesting premise, and nasty as hell. I haven't read (or watched) anything like this. It's revolting and intriguing at the same time. Nice. 4/5
Wee-Gee - Meh, not really my thing, but a fun read either way. It's a familiar premise, but with heapings of plentiful gore. 3/5
Sally - huh?? I feel like I'm missing pieces here, but... per the notes after the last story it was an early work re-written from memory.
Cruising for Creeps - Really engaging and makes you root for the protagonist. Absolutely delivers. Very satisfying wrap-up to the collection. 4/5
Real good time. I'm not going to go through every single story in this collection, but it was a good bunch of stuff.
Like others, "cruising for creeps" is probably my favorite in the bunch.
This one is pretty straight forward. If you think you'd like it, you probably would. If the blurbs don't inherently interest you, its probably not for you.
My only outright critique I'll share here is that sometimes the writing gets in the way of itself. An interesting concept will be presented, and then it seems like Sonnet comes up with a different concept and decides "nvm, this story is about THIS now." which, to be fair, keeps the pace up to a fun and fast place. However, it sometimes makes some gets more complicated than they probably need to be. Look at the titular "Toxic" story to see this most evidently.
I loved the stories Toxic, Sally and Innards-Fuck. But my favourite definitely was The Cum House. Who wouldn't be curious to read a story with that title? And in my opinion it didn't disappoint. All the other stories were okay but not good enough to give the collection 5 Stars. I would still recommend the book wholeheartedly!
This is the 3rd Judith Sonnet book I've read (first and second being Fetal Backwash and For The Sake Of). These short stories were all very good. I loved how all of them suffered in topic and gore. Gotta say my favorites out of here were "The Cum house", "cruisin' for creeps", and "Anti-VaXXX". Anti-VaXXX nearly had me gagging. The afterword says she's looking to expand on that story. Id love to read more into that as it was just a skim off the surface. Thanks Judith 💜
Toxic by Judith Sonnet is a wonder short story collection with a little bit of everything. Extreme horror, scifi, love, revenge, fetish, great characters, fantastic ideas, and just about everything I want in a collection. It is extremely diverse. I can't pick a favorite story as I kinda loved them all. So I'll just say that below are my as spoiler free blurbs about each story. I can not reccomend this book enough.
An occasional portal- reminds me of an early books of blood Cliver Barker short story. A weird story with no explanation.
Innards-fuck- I wanted this to keep going. This would be an amazing novella. 8MM meets Summer of 84 (except with only 2 kids with one being really fucked up).
What are you going to do with me?- an interesting take on frat culture and the weakest link only in because of family name and money.
Toxic- you remember that oil like monster from The Raft segment of Creepshow 2? Apparently it's in love with the 1988 remake of The Blob and they came out of the ocean to meet and make love in Florida. Oh and yea tentacles... I wrote this about half way through reading the story because I thought it was funny and didn't want to forget... then the story ripped out my fucking heart and made me feel so sad. Like the hopelessness sad that you get when you watch the end of Stephen King's The Mist. Jesus Judith did you really have to do that to me. Fuck. Just another day at the beach though.
The cum house- that was the weirdest take on a ghost hunting show I have ever read. How does she come up with this stuff?
Anti-vaxxx- I have read Dead Inside. I have read Woom. I have Judith's own No One Rides For Free. This is the most disgusted and repulsed I have ever felt by a story. In fact was really grossed out by those other books at all they were dark and deplorable things happened. Horrible things. But this. This is disgusting. I thank whatever whatever God you want to pick that I don't have this fetish. Holy fucking shit. I really hope Judith did not have to research this topic on the internet because if she did I feel like we should start a gofundme for her therapy .
Wee-gee - this felt like a satanic panic D&D campaign played out from kids perspective instead.of adults. Really enjoyed this. I'd rent this vhs for sure.
Sally- a pretty simple love story the quickest read so far. Nothing flashy.
Crusing for creeps- I loves this story. The setting of the late 1950s, the characters, the plot, the pace, the whole damn thing. It's hard to talk about it with out spoilers but I will say it makes me want to read similar stories of 1950s teens in the horror genre.
TOXIC is one hell of a great short story collection. Fast-paced, gnarly, brutal tales that dig into your head and leaves seeds that sprout into nightmares.
Judith Sonnet packs this collection with horror, comedy, splatterpunk, and everything in between.
I can't recommend this collection enough. Pick it up right now.
If you haven't read splatter punk before or even triggered by rape, some child violence and aboritions i would suggest this isnt the book for you
All stories are really well written and a fun grotesque read. What are you going to do with me and cum house are just sick and nasty i thought out of the whole 9 stories.
If your a splatter unk fan i'd definitely recommend this!!
Judith Sonnet is slowing becoming a favorite for me :) Sure - not EVERY story in this collection was perfect for me, but there were some really good ones! Gross and lots of body fluids...but didn't expect anything less!
9 short stories but really 3 caught my attention. The Cum House and Anti- Vaxxx were so vile and gross both had by stomach churning. The last story Cruising for Creeps was a total vigilante story, 2 kids righting the wrong of society. It was a great book.
I’m not really a fan of short stories and usually try to avoid them but THESE stories were wild & actually kept my attention! I wanted more! I didn’t care for like one story out of the 9(?) that it has but overall it was great.
There’s definitely something here for every type of horror reader. Nobody writes like Sonnet and I’ll never stop praising her imagination. I also really enjoy when authors include notes on where their story ideas came from.
OMG THANK YOU JUDITH SONNET FOR ANOTHER AMAZING BOOK. Seriously though, these short stories were awesome! Cruising for Creeps was hands down my favorite!
Judith as always excels with her work and this showcase of horrors is no exception. Her ability to build stories in such few words is a gift in itself and one that you can tell has given her a unique skill for storytelling. So let's dive straight in with An Occasional Portal. We meet Stew Ripley who is kind of an asshole. Cheated on his wife and now thinking of getting rid of the girl he dated who works with him. Honestly I had no sympathy for Stew. But that doorway now piqued my interest. The abandoned lot is an allure that pulls the reader in. The scene in the tunnel almost had vibes from Necromentia, which really brought in the eerie vibes and unsettling atmosphere. That carries through to the big reveal of the doorway and its main purpose. Innards-Fuck is a tale of caution, that some videos are never meant to be seen, as poor Fred finds out when his friend Dylan shows him one hell of a torture flick. What are you going to do with me has layers of grotesque visuals mixed with some insanely tapped characters. Jack learns to earn acceptance in the fraternity he's joined; he has to lose his virginity. But Linus offers him a loophole of sorts, see some real boobs and we will give you another chance. But it seems to turn from a simple peeping Tom exercise to something more sinister. A bloodbath scene that is so intense, I was on the edge of my seat. Ok for obvious reasons, Toxic is my favourite of the story assortment. A day at the beach turns into Cloverfield meets Godzilla. Not just for the monster magnitude but the setup of the characters as well. From Jeff, Tucker, and Polly to the other survivors. Also loved the subtle nods to writers Jon Athan and Daniel Volpe. The elements of the story along with the horrifying visuals make this story amazing. The Cumhouse is a humorous change of tempo as a show about ghost hunters, comes to discover more about the haunting in this well, unusual place. Anti-VaXXX did make me a little weak around the gills. So I am not ashamed to say this one turned my stomach. Another favourite story of mine is Wee-Gee, an incredible rollercoaster ride of a story, as Philip retrieves his uncle Oujiboard and brings it to his friend Lincoln's house. He has no idea about the dark forces due to be awakened along with a few revelations about his estranged Uncle Trey. This one is a Haunting read and an exciting take on a trope involving ghosts and demons. Just like Stephen King, she aint afraid to kill off the cast even if they are kids. The ending really packs a punch with the corruption of an innocent mind by evil. Sally is a twisted little diddy surrounding a man's love for his Sally. But in true Sonnet style, nothing is what, it seems, and of course. Cruising for Creeps is the final story in the collection, oh my god this was an incredible end to the selection. As we follow Twyla after her fight with her Boyfriend Hank, she runs into two greasers Chet and Nate. Turns out they have been pulling justice runs on the night, and you know me I love revenge stories. An action-packed gore fest that left my heart in my throat and that ending was just heartbreaking. Honestly, we need more writers like Judith with her mind-blowing versatility. I can see this author just getting bigger and bigger as time goes on. It's going to be incredible to watch her hone in on this amazing skill.
