GEM agent, Opal’s strengths are adaptation and infiltration. Assigned to go undercover at a youth center when several teenagers disappear, she’s shocked to recognize a ghost of her own traumatic past at the helm. However, her worry for the missing kids is greater than her concern being recognized and she risks her own safety to discover the truth.
To complicate matters, an FBI agent with the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team she’s worked alongside before, shows up conducting his own investigation and almost blows her cover. It takes some convincing, and cooperation is reluctant at first, but the common goal sways them to join forces.
Working together to uncover an organized group of child molesters, they find themselves falling—for each other.
GEM: a privately-funded organization operating independently in the search for—and the rescue and recovery of—missing and exploited children. Although at times working in conjunction with law enforcement, GEM aims to ensure the victims receive justice…by whatever means necessary.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
OPAL (GEM Series, Book #1) by Freya Barker is an exciting and fast-paced first book in a new romantic suspense trilogy with each book featuring a female operative, Opal, Pearl, and Onyx from GEM. These three operatives share a traumatic past and are now working to locate, rescue and save missing and exploited children and teens without the constraints of working for a law enforcement agency.
Kate is GEM operative Opal and a master at blending into any type of environment and a master markswoman. She is back in Kentucky in the town from her own private nightmares to investigate the disappearance of the sheriff’s grandniece and several others from the community youth center.
FBI Agent Mitch Kenny is investigating the same case as Opal and as they cross paths, not only do they agree to a certain amount of cooperation, but there is an attraction between the two. As the investigation heats up, so does the danger, surprises, and romantic heat.
Ms. Barker never disappoints! Opal is a talented, intelligent, and strong GEM operative with a terrible past, but the horror also brought the three friends together. Mitch is a strong, dedicated, and caring FBI agent who is described by Opal as a “silver fox”. Ms. Barker does a great job of bringing them together under terrible circumstances at a believable pace with a few bumps in the road. Opal. Pearl, and Onyx are brought together by the mysterious Jacob Branch and while some of the childhood and teen exploitation scenes are tough to read about in spots, I kept occasionally smiling at other scenes because the set up with Jacob and the women reminds me of Charlie’s Angels, but the middle-aged edition. I really loved Opal and Mitch’s story, and I am looking forward to finding out who Pearl and Onyx are paired with.
I highly recommend this first gripping romantic suspense in the GEM trilogy!
This series starter was so good!! Opal and Mitch were amazing. If you've read this author before then you know her heroines are strong women who may have a bit of a need to prove they're capable. Opal is no different. I happen to love a strong heroine, and I also loved how she handled a few situations. Mitch was just as great. I loved seeing what a great dad he is and I like how we got to see how much he had to fight his attraction to Opal until he finally gave in. The best part was the overall storyline that's the investigation into missing teens. I was enthralled with their investigation, but I will say some content was also pretty sad. I know things like this happen in the real world and I hate the that children are a target. I hope that they have people fighting for them just as much as Opal, Mitch and the rest of the gang fought for these kids. Great read!
I absolutely LOVED Opal and Mitch. They were explosive together as a couple and dangerously lethal to those they hunted. They each had pasts that led them into their line of work and while my heart ached for them, it helped them when confronted with the issues at hand.
This is an intense story and covers crimes of a darker nature. The chemistry between Opal and Mitch sizzles throughout their story. Mixed together, this book was utterly riveting as it captured my attention and refused to let go. No sooner had I turned the last page and I was ready for the next book in this gripping new series by the queen of mature romance.
What a great way to kick off a new series. I absolutely loved this book. I loved all the different layers to Opal’s character. She was so driven and totally bad ass. And what can I say about Mitch… Totally hot, FBI agent, from the minute these two meet, you knew you were going to be in for a wild ride. I absolutely loved the GEM team and this story kept me on the edge of my seat, page after page. The mystery and suspense in this one was a home run. I don’t know how Freya does it, everything she writes is better than the last. I can’t wait to read the next book. Definitely a five star read for me.
More reading out of my comfort zone, but this one worked out better.
Opal/Kate is one of three operatives working for GEM--a private, Charlie's Angels-Esque organization that specializes in finding and retrieving victims of child trafficking.
Mitch is part of the FBI's CARD taskforce, which has a similar goal. But where CARD wants to bring the perpetrator's to justice according to the law, GEM just wants to stop them by whatever means necessary.
When Mitch and Opal end up on the same case, there's an immediate attraction, but equally there's tension because of their differing approaches. As a romance, I thought the buildup to the relationship as they figure out how to work together to be more convincing than most other romance novels I've read, albeit still quite fast.
It reads like a film. Quick, but decently paced, with plenty of action, suspense, and heat. Since I was reading it on a plane, that was ideal.
Because of GEM's involvement, there is a certain amount of aughts-era cop-TV!type "bending the rules via consultants" trope happening with regard to evidence, which may make some readers uncomfortable. On the one hand, the bad guys in this series are unquestionably The Baddies. No one likes child molesters, and it's easy to justify doing whatever it takes to take them down. On the other hand, the rules exist for a reason, and in real life this kind of rules-flexible vigilantism causes problems.
"But didn't you say you enjoyed the book?" I did, yes. As something to read on a plane, it was quite good. But just because I enjoy something in-the-moment doesn't mean I can't point out what doesn't work. I'm not going to rip the book apart over it, but I think it's worth mentioning.
Soooooo good!!!! I did not want to put this one down for anything! Freya is such a great storyteller! She writes amazing suspenseful romance stories like no one else! This one begins with a little mystery. You don’t know exactly what happened until you get a little into the meat of the story. Once you are there, you find yourself really rooting for the good guys. The bad guys deserve to lose.
Opal works for an agency who helps locate missing children. She’s very good at her job despite her appearances. At least, this is how she’s described in the beginning by a certain FBI agent. She surprises him at every turn. He’s wowed by her! He becomes attracted to her and their working relationship quickly becomes more. Until he pushes her away when the case takes a bad turn…. I highly recommend you read this one if you enjoy suspenseful romance stories or you are wanting to try your very first one - you will not be disappointed!
This new series started out with a bang and kept up the momentum though out the whole story. Even though the subject was uncomfortable the writing was great. I was thankful even though you know what’s going on there was no in depth description.
FBI Agent Mitch Kenny is sent in to investigate a missing girl but what he finds is way deeper and darker that that.
Kate/ Opal works for a agency that doesn’t always play by the rules but get the job done by any means necessary. She one tough lady.
Jesus, she lives in the boonies.
I shake my head and chuckle. What the he!! am I thinking? This is Kate we’re talking about. A one-woman army.
A wonderful slow burn love story with an older couple. Another hit from this fantastic author.
This is going to be a great series. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. The GEM's are a tough bunch of women who have been through bad times and trauma together at a young age, and now work together called Gems by Jacob. They work to find girls and boys who are trafficked. This story takes place in Kentucky and there are some sick high ranking individuals in this book. Hang on to your seats, there is plenty of danger, suspense, chases. I love these strong women. Can't wait for the next book.
Wow! How does she do it? Each book and series gets better and better. I absolutely loved this new series. Opal is so awesome and strong. She has a tragic past that comes back to haunt her on her current case. Opal and Mitch are just fire together. This book just sucks you in and keeps you interested and reading until the end. I can’t wait for the next book.
I found this one to be interesting, both Opal and Mitch were very into helping kids due to their past, they just went about it in different ways. Both ways were good and bad, both worked. It was interesting to see how much of the real person Opal let Mitch see and how fast and how well their organizations worked together. I think each one of them saw the benefit of the other, but thought their was better..
As they investigated they kept finding more and more things that led to them realizing this wasn't what they thought going into it, so much more. They had the chance to make a big difference to to the kids and get a lot of bad guys off the streets. While things got a bit iffy towards the end, things were busted wide open with lots of bad guys getting caught.
I'm intrigued by the choice Mitch made at the end, wonder how he will work in his new parameters.
First-time author for us and we have to say that we really enjoyed our first read by them it was a fantastic story that kept you on the seat of your pants the entire time. The characters were amazing and so easy to fall in love with. Opal was an amazing character loved her from the moment we met her and that sass of hers omg!
The plot twists and turns were awesome. The story was also heartfelt and emotional for these characters for all they have endured. Mitch and Opal were characters that had such amazing chemistry causing more than a few fan-worthy moments.
Overall we just loved it this one turned out to be quite a page-turner. The story was filled with mystery suspense and violence and had plot twists the reader didn't see coming and those are some of the best moments for you as the reader which we called our OMG! moments Grins!
Opal is a gleaming GEM in Freya Barker's Ocean! This first book in a new series from this extremely talented author did NOT disappoint! In fact, this one may be this author's BEST work to date, filled to the brim with heart-pounding suspense, intrigue and her signature style that draws you in from the first words and doesn't let go until the very last!
Opal (aka Kate) is a complex, yet relatable, character who's tough exterior hides a soft heart. Her shared experiences growing up in the foster care system with her teammates Pearl and Onyx (Janey and Raj) is sometimes hard to read but is an essential component to this heart-wrenching story that kept me literally on the edge of my seat the entire time! These three AMAZING women work for Jacob Branch, a mysterious figure who is only a voice on the phone (much like Charlie of Charlie's Angels fame), and who's only objective is to rescue children who have been taken/lured in to sex trafficking by whatever means necessary. When Opal crosses paths with FBI agent Mitch Kenney, the attraction is oh-so-obvious....and it was a pure delight to watch these two succumb to the inevitable! And can I just say....Mitch is an incredibly yummy addition to Ms. Barker's stable of heroes! He's protective, a little bit Alpha and definitely isn't afraid to show his feelings!
Once again, Ms. Barker has given us an INTENSE, un-put-downable story filled with all the things that I ADORE about her books! I can't WAIT for the next book in this series and what I'm sure will be another STELLAR MUST READ!!!
Really enjoyed this book. If you have read Freya Barker before you know what your going to get, well written characters, and engaging plot and an all round fab read. Can't wait for the next one.
GEM and sex crimes can be the most soul destroying, life leeching and heart breaking job in the world. Seeing the sick twisted individuals who traffick kids and the wreckage they leave behind without a second of remorse, or the diabolical ones who abuse the kids, takes a toll on the strongest of people. But taking them down, destroying their networks and rescuing any of the victims alive....the best of days on the job! The girls of GEM are so strong, they have been the victims of these heinous people, and each and every case has them revisiting their demons. But as they tell the kids, 'this doesn't have to define you, it's your past not your future'. The strength and restraint they show each and everyday, as they investigate and rescue, is awe inspiring, their first hand knowledge and experiences are heartbreaking. This is a gritty new series from Freya Barker and I love the mix of characters and personalities, whilst the crimes they fight are haunting, and definitely not minimised, there is also sass, sparks, humour, love and most of all hope. Making this a book with everything. A great start to the series, I look forward to Pearl's book which I expect will be packed with fireworks and explosive confrontations, she uses her past as a shield and won't submit to love easily!
I do love a book with a strong female lead. I’m loving this whole badass Charlie’s Angels vibe that GEM has going on. This story tackles some pretty difficult subject matter and Freya does it justice. I truly hope there are GEM operatives out there somewhere helping real life kids living through this hell, because you know it’s a real life problem. Great 1st book in this new series!!
I know I’ve said it before, but, Ms. Barker is always a one click for me. She brings her characters to life with their story and descriptions.
In Opal, we are introduced to a whole new set of heroes and heroines. The story plays out literally like a movie in my mind. The content and the plot could easily happen in our world today.
I am so ready for the next book in the series. Well done Ms. Barker!
Freya Barker’s newest series GEM starts with OPAL. As always, Freya's characters and storylines are well thought out. Taking in these new characters, emotions start the reader feeling for Opal -aka Kate– straight away as your heart is pounding when you realise what she’s gone through to get to where she is today. GEM is a privately funded company whose sole focus is search and rescue and this book is huge roller coaster of gasps as she and the team search for missing and exploited children.
Opal meets FBI agent Mitch Kenny whilst looking for a boy who has gone missing after leaving school. Mitch totally underestimates Opal but very quickly proves what she is capable of…. when they meet again unexpectedly, Mitch manages not to blow her cover. Straight away this book draws you in and find yourself turning the pages to find out what happens next. Yes, there’s an attraction between the two but it’s not acted on for quite a while as the mystery constantly twists and turns at a fast pace. As a couple you cheer for them, even though there are hiccups and misunderstandings, their passion for their work is a way of life for each of them. There’s a sort of story cliff hanger which leads nicely into the next book Pearl.
If you love Freya’s books as I do, you won’t be disappointed in starting this series, absolutely brilliant read.
Opal had a rough childhood, but she managed to get out of it and is now helping find missing children. Great story, wonderful characters and finding romance at the Same time as looking for missing children is a plus. When a man from her childhood appears she is doing everything to get him convicted.
Opal - GEM #1 Opal (Kate) and Mitch’s story is an outstanding start in this new series. Freya has created an intense story that grabs you from the onset. After years in the military and state police, Opal having suffered her own horrors has found the perfect fit with GEM a privately funded organization headed up by the mysterious Jacob. GEM is willing to do whatever is necessary to locate and rescue missing and exploited children while ensuring justice is served. Mitch, a dedicated FBI Agent soon finds himself part of the same investigation Opal is working. Try as they might to fight it, their attraction is immediate if a little unwanted at least in the beginning as their slow burn romance finally ignites. This story has some great twists, an unexpected plot turn I never saw coming and an ending that will leave you more than satisfied.
This book is the start of a new series by Freya Barker and let me tell you it is a hell of a start! Opal aka Kate is an operative for a privately funded agency with a tragic past. Mitch is an FBI agent and a single dad to a teenage girl. When these two end up working the same case sparks fly. I loved every single second of these book. The characters are fantastic and I can’t wait for more!

I’ve been wanting to read one of this author’s books for ages and I am so glad I finally hopped off my rear end and discovered this treasure. The best news is that there will be two more stories to come. Right from the very first page this story intrigued me and I found it hard to put down, I had to do adult things like wash the clothes—surely you have more in your wardrobe! Cooking the dinner—are you really hungry? And all of those things that you do day in and day out. This book had me totally absorbed. Plus, although I don’t usually comment about book covers, this book cover is absolutely gorgeous!
Opal was such a strong-willed and determined character, she knew what she needed to do and didn’t deviate from her plans. I loved the way she was so focused on helping children. Her childhood trauma could have turned her in a completely different direction, but fortunately, it didn’t.
Mitch Kenny, ‘the silver fox’ as Opal called him, was just as dedicated to his work helping to find missing children and just as determined to succeed in as many cases as possible. Meeting Opal opened his eyes a bit and I liked how honest he was with himself. Their chemistry was instant but because of the situations they were in not something they thought they should explore—until forced together and then they couldn’t resist any longer. And… l loved how the author got her point across—that they were extremely compatible in bed—but didn’t write sex scene after sex scene, where the storyline got lost.
I really enjoyed the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ style concerning GEM, where the three operatives—Opal, Pearl, and Onyx, all work in the field and receive instructions and backup from their boss—a man they’ve never seen in real life, only communicated with via the phone. As the story unfolds the suspense element ramps up and I was thinking all sorts of things. The storyline was fantastic and so exciting. I found myself almost racing to finish to find out what happened and believe me… it didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed the intense excitement with the twists and turns thrown in as well. I never would have suspected one twist, ever! Great surprise.
I am now going to try to be patient while I wait for Pearl and Lee’s story, now that could just be very explosive. 😉

In this new series, the author once again excels in her storytelling. GEM is a private organization not ruled by the government protocols, thus being able to “color outside the lines” . Their goal is rescuing those kids that have been exploited by unethical people or are missing . The three members of GEM, Opal/Kate, Pearl/Janey and Onyx/Raj, know all about being exploited since they lived it years ago in the place called Transition House. Their boss, Jacob Branch, whom they have never met in person, communicates by phone. A similarity shared by the 1970s TV show, Charlie’s Angels. This first book belongs to Opal/Kate. When she goes undercover at a teen youth center to investigate the disappearance of some kids, she is shocked to discover the man that was supposed to have died in a fire 20 years ago is alive. The same man that was in charged of the Transition House where Opal, Pearl and Kate experienced things a child should ever have. When the FBI gets involved in their own investigation, Opal comes face to face with FBI agent Mitch Kenny. The man she crossed paths during the rescue of a child. As the the two entities join forces, the attraction intensifies. Will this give them a chance to find love after 40 or will they end up clashing and going their separate ways once the mission is accomplished? While the plot is engaging from page one and the main characters are complex, imperfect and likable, there is more to the story. It’s a reminder that even in this country children are being exploited on a daily basis. Many times by affluent individuals that work under the radar and thus go undetected. As individuals and as a nation, we need to do more to assist those in need. I also enjoy the author’s stories because the characters are mature individuals over 40. A great start to the series. Looking forward to Pearl/Janey’s story that continues with the loose ends left on this one. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Buoni Amici Press. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Freya Barker writes suspenseful stories featuring mature characters that are intelligent, driven and human. This new series focuses on characters who track down children who have fallen into the hands of creeps who exploit and abuse them.
Opal (aka Kate) has overcome her teenage trauma suffered while in foster care and leaving at Transition House. Her history provides the drive and determination to keep working in this emotionally challenging line of work.
Opal encounters FBI Agent Mitch Kenny while participating in a search for a missing boy, and then he suddenly appears while she is undercover for GEM.
These two work well together and have a strong attraction to each other. I enjoyed Mitch’s reaction to Opal/Kate exceeding his expectations and outright impressing him on several occasions. She’s been through a lot, but she’s also very talented and experienced in her field.
Their working relationship gets personal, causing some complications for them as they try to adjust to having a professional relationship and also sleeping together.
I enjoyed theses well developed characters and the storyline full of intrigue, surprises and suspense. The topic is emotionally challenging, but the storyline handles the darkness by focusing on Opal and Mitch and their teammates’ efforts to find the missing teenagers and capture the bad guys.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I admit that I was a bit hesitant when I started reading this book. The subject matter was very sensitive. I have started books by other authors about similar subjects where it was entirely too detailed for me, and I couldn't finish the book.
I should have known Freya Barker would handle the subject with an appropriate level of sensitivity, while still turning out an excellent thriller. I think I held my breath through almost the entire book waiting for what would happen next.
Opal turned out to be another great FMC. Mature, experienced, intelligent, and strong while still having a sense of vulnerability while also being loving and caring. I liked the way Mitch learned to accept and respect her talents. There was attraction, but no instalove. I appreciated the way the relationship was approached. I also liked the relationship Opal, Pearl, and Onyx had with each other. Supportive women with life experience.
There were a couple of things that happened during the book that seemed fairly obvious to me, but anticipating those occurrences did nothing to take away from the story.
This book was full of suspense, danger, intrigue, and some action. There was some fear, anxiety, empathy and sympathy. Romance and heat between Mitch and Opal could also be found.
I liked the surprise at the end. I didn't expect that one. There was a bit of a preview given, but that one wasn't surprising and I am definitely looking forward to it.
This is one book where I was immersed in the story and hated having to put it down to do mundane things like work, cook, or laundry. Lol.
I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
GEM: A PRIVATELY-FUNDED ORGANIZATION OPERATING INDEPENDENTLY IN THE SEARCH FOR—AND THE RESCUE AND RECOVERY OF—MISSING AND EXPLOITED CHILDREN.
ALTHOUGH, AT TIMES WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT, GEM AIMS TO ENSURE THE VICTIMS RECEIVE JUSTICE…BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY.
Once again, the writing of Freya Barker does not disappoint. The first book in her new series, GEM, has the series off to a fantastic start. Her characters are well written and the plot is engrossing. I love that her characters are so real, less than perfect - may in fact be described as plump, older than most heroines yet strong women.
This storyline deals with Opal and Mitch (GEM operative and FBI agent respectively). Opal has suffered a terrible childhood which has led her to work at GEM, with her two childhood friends. Mitch is divorced and the father of a teenage girl. Thrown into the character mix, Opal’s two team members (Pearl and Onyx), as well as a mysterious boss (Jacob Branch) and five members of the FBI Card Team (Matt Driver, Joe Lampert, John Punani, Adam Byron and Phil Dresden). The storyline held my interest throughout which says a lot for the writing style of the author.
The plot twists and turns as GEM and the FBI search for missing and exploited children with an ending I didn’t see coming. Opal and Mitch’s romance was slow to take off but when it did final ignite it was a fast burn.
You won’t want to put this book down until you have finished it. I read this book in one sitting.
I received “Opal” as an ARC and I would absolutely recommend this book and series.
Opal is a story about an investigation into disappearances of teens from a youth center. Opal goes in undercover at the youth center while Mitch, an FBI agent, investigates in an official capacity. They end up working together and growing closer as the case starts to ramp up.
I liked Opal, she's a strong character who stands out the most in this story. I liked Mitch as well but his character paled a bit in comparison to Opal. Their romance was okay, but nothing I would want to read again. That would be the case with the plot as well. It was interesting but it didn't stand out to me. I wanted more emotional depth, something to make me invested in both the story and the characters.
Don't get me wrong. Opal is good. I just wanted more depth and emotional intensity.

I love Freya’s books and I was excited to hear she had a new series coming out.
I think one of the things I liked the most was that while the book still had a small town feel, great well written and rounded characters and an engaging story line (as always!!) the story arc was a little different from what we’ve read from Ms B before.
Reading about Opal and the other ladies of GEM made my heart hurt. Partly because of the narrative from Freya but also because the things they experienced are things we are aware go on in the world around us…. That blast of reality made me more invested in the read than ever and I had a knot in my chest more than once.
Opal had strength of character and a determination to save others from the same trauma she herself and her friends had lived through. I loved her determination, her focus and - while she had that little streak of what Mitch (and I) probably considered reckless - I totally understood why she did some of the things she did.
Mitch. I really liked him. He felt switched on and aware of what could be going on around him, but as the story passed you felt that his life had worn him down a bit. It took a while for this pair to work out their feelings and it wasn’t without problem, angst or a need by my to knock their heads together at least a few times…. He was juggling work and home life, dealing with a daughter and a piece of work ex.
Maybe I’ve read Freya so much that I felt sore I knew at least one of the plot lines before it happened but even then I couldn’t wait to see what happened….
There’s some mystery round the ladies ‘boss’. I’m intrigued about who he is, how he knows their history and just what his motives are….
Interesting characters and at least one match up that’s gonna be coming are gonna make for fun reading.
I can’t wait to read more about Pearl and Onyx.
If you’re a reader of Freya’s your gonna enjoy this new series. If you’re new to one of my go-to authors this is a pretty good place to start!!!!!
Opal is the start of a brand new series Gem, from Freya Barker. Who and what is Gem? The first book Opal introduces us to the mysterious team Gem - how far will Opal and her fellow operatives go within the law to protect those more vunerable than most of us. Mitch is a cop, focused and seasoned in the field. When he first sees Opal she makes an impression on him, but he doesn’t expect to see her again. Imagine his surprise when he recognises her Working at a youth centre that he is investigating the disappearance of vunerable teenagers. Mitch and Opal have a choice - work together and find the missing teens, With or without the added extras that Gem can offer. A great start to the series. Characters that you immediately like and want to learn more about - a trademark of Freya Barker novels. Everything you want in a novel is right here.
