FOR SOME, LIFE CAN BE MURDER

Answers that prove to be as elusive as the identities of the men making so many people’s lives a complete misery. An absolute cracker!! Tony Forder you are a very talented gentleman, and this is another five-star plus more read.
Sadly, this is Jimmy’s last week with the Major Crime Unit and it is also an extremely sad time for us die hard readers of this fabulous series…I suppose they do say all good things must come to an end.
In this last week, Jimmy will have two cases that he will be working on and of course hoping to wrap in time for his final hours on the job. Firstly, a homeless war veteran has discovered a body but when the police arrive to investigate the body is gone. Even so Bliss believes in this man’s story and realizes this will not be an easy case from the start. Next, he finds himself in a hospital where 14-year-old Nora with Cerebral Palsy has experienced a drug overdose, how can this possibly happen that a young girl is in this situation, but unfortunately there is worse to come when Bliss has a conversation with her doctor and begins to dig deeper.
Once again Penny and the rest of the team are by his side, and Bliss is now realizing that his life is now moving forward and changing, sadness for what will no longer be but also happiness for what may lay ahead in the future as he moves forward into a different role outside this unit. He also has high hopes that Bish or Penny may take up a promoted role to lead the team that has been so close to his heart for so long.
It was wonderful to see Molly take such a large role in the book, she and Jimmy have quite the history after his mammoth job of keeping her alive and it is so heartwarming to see the affectionate banter between the two of them, theirs really is a special relationship.
I really cannot put into words how much I will miss this series and its characters, when I open a new book, it really is like catching up with family and this is one family I am going to miss so much. When times are tough, we often retreat into our reading world, and I have to say there has been quite a few occasions over the last few years that this series has provided me with such wonderful escapism away from health issues.
If you have just discovered these posts regarding this author, take the time to pick up one of his books, I am sure after you do so that you will be then itching to pick up another and what a wonderful time you have ahead seeing as this was book 11 in the series. Always such a high quality of writing and excellent plots that will keep you entertained for many hours.
To you Tony, you are an exceptional person with a talent to match. This series has captured the attention of so many and the enjoyment you have provided to us will linger long in our hearts and minds for many years to come. You have definitely gone out with a bang!!

This is the last time we get to see DI Jimmy Bliss in this role, he is in his last week at the Peterbortough Major Crimes Unit before his retirement. This will not, however, be the last we see of him as he will still be working with the force but in a different role. This means the series will continue, which I am very glad about.

This book starts with a heart-stopping moment. It threw me for a moment, you will understand if you have read this series. From then the story gets into the nitty gritty of murder and an investigation. Just because it is Jimmy's last week does not mean he will not take on work.

When a murder has been reported but the body has disappeared, it makes the witness come across as unreliable, there are other reasons for this. But, when the witness is murdered it begs the question as to why, what did he see that would cause this reaction?

As the team try to get their heads around this case, or could it be two cases? After all, just because there is a connection, does not necessarily mean they are connected. Add to that the missing body! As I was saying, there is also another case that comes into the office. This is one of an overdose and of a drug gang taking over a residence, they have become victims of being cuckooed!

With two, possibly three cases on the books, this is going to be a tough week for Jimmy. Not only will he want to leave with a clean sheet and no outstanding cases, but he also has other things on his mind.

Once again the author has really got the team working overtime and there are diversions and conflicts on the cards. There are some grey areas, but Jimmy is the older style of copper who sees beyond the theory and the protocols. Because this team has been together a while there is a solid camaraderie between them, the banter is good as always but there is also the opportunity for thoughts to be aired, and if things don't feel right then someone will mention it. You only get this sort of thing with an established team and the author knows his characters inside out and this is why this sort of banter works so well.

There is a really nasty element to this story, not just murder, even though that is, of course, bad, but the cuckooed family have their own storyline. This is one that looks like an attempted suicide, but there is far more to this than first impressions suggest.

Having Jimmy Bliss as the main character means he has built up a lot of respect over the years, as well as treading on a few toes. This becomes evident with his retirement party, it did feel emotional and it was a chance to see the softer side of this man.

Having Jimmy still remain around in the future is fabulous, and it also fits in so well with the character. Still wanting to help and be part of the force feels right. This is his work family and they are a very close bunch. I cannot imagine him wanting to leave them behind and go into full retirement just yet! So I am eagerly awaiting to see what the author has in store for the loveable Jimmy.

This is an established series and one that I have read from the beginning, it is one I would recommend reading in order as there are things that have happened in the earlier books that still crop up and have a bearing. And, they are also amazing books to read as well!

If you are a fan of crime and thrillers that are fast-paced and intense then this is a series and a book for you. A police procedural that has more than just the crimes at its centre. This is another amazing instalment in the DI Bliss series and one I would definitely recommend.

In January 2018, I read the first Jimmy Bliss book, Bad to the Bone and thus embarked upon a rollercoaster journey which has continued to thrill and move me with each subsequent novel in the series. I once described the series as essential reading and my opinion has never changed; Tony J. Forder has created something very special in Jimmy Bliss and his team, and his legions of devoted fans pays testament to that. Therefore, I had mixed emotions starting What Dies Inside Us, the final book in the DI Jimmy Bliss series. It's not the end for Jimmy who will return as a civilian SIO but nevertheless, this is the end of an era for readers as well as for Bliss and his team – but what a way to conclude the series!
What Dies Inside Us features everything I have loved about the series but it never feels as though we're merely retreading old ground. As Bliss begins his final week before retiring from the police force, it's inevitable that he should muse upon the highs and lows of his long career and I would recommend reading the previous books if possible, in order to truly appreciate the subtly powerful emotional impact of this final instalment. His final two cases require the painstakingly dogged, collaborative approach which Tony J. Forder always authentically brings to life. The first, a murder case without a body is intricately plotted and packed with twists and turns. Meanwhile, his second investigation involves the horrendous cuckooing and exploitation of a vulnerable disabled daughter and her family, and is utterly heartbreaking. It isn't surprising that he should be reminded of Molly, the young woman he rescued in Endless Silent Scream and who has become an important part of his life.
Molly makes a welcome return here and their close relationship is heartwarming, The ongoing development of the characters has always been the most impressive aspect of the series for me and it's really touching to reflect upon the changes which have taken place in Bliss's personal life over time, and how despite still being driven to the point of obsession, he isn't the lonely, angry man he once was. Now surrounded by people who love and respect him, Bliss is still inclined to act alone, take risks and doubt himself but he is also able to appreciate what he has. His interest in and care for his team, both personally and professionally is exemplary as ever, and he continues to encourage and infuriate them. His belief in the need for justice sees him making a decision which isn't welcomed by all of his colleagues and it's fascinating to see him negotiate the discussion which allows his officers to make their point. Meanwhile, another member of the team is going through a difficult time, and where Bliss was once an irascible figure who clashed with people time and again, Tony J. Forder has sympathetically evolved his character over time, resulting in him becoming a compassionate yet firm mentor.
The cardboard 'Bliss Pissed-Ometer" which was used to depict his moods in the past, makes its reappearance but for entirely different reasons and as always Tony J. Forder captures the warmth and humour which sustains the team in the face of the grim, challenging investigations which stay with them, regardless of the eventual outcome. Jimmy Bliss is at his absolute best here, with all the different sides of his personality rendered superbly. His long years of experience allow him to offer wise counsel and yet he still doubts himself. He has tempered some of his previous rash, hot-headed impulsiveness but doesn't flinch from danger and he never loses his unique moral compass which means he might not do everything by the book but contrary to what may once have seemed impossible, he has earned the respect of his senior officers.
What Dies Inside Us is a beautifully nuanced thriller with an impeccable balance of light and shade. The darkest recesses of humanity are portrayed in the callous murders and harrowing abuse uncovered in his final cases, and the unavoidable legacy of nightmares, regrets and fears is vividly described; however, ultimately this is a moving exploration of love and friendship. Chandler, Bish, Ansari, Molly and the rest all have their roles to play here and the characterisation is unsurprisingly excellent throughout but this is Jimmy Bliss's book and What Dies Inside Us is the perfect conclusion to this stage of his life. Farewell, Detective Inspector Bliss, it's been an absolute pleasure. I can't wait to discover what lies ahead for Jimmy as a civilian! Very highly recommended.

Knowing that this book would see the end of DI Bliss's tenure as a serving police officer with the MCU I was more than a little wary as to how the author was going to ties things up. But I really shouldn't have worried, because Tony Forder has exceeded any expectations I may have had for this book.

I feeling guilty for only giving it 5 stars, as it certainly deserves far more than that but that is what I'm limited to.

In the week running up to his retirement, Jimmy and the team are faced with not one, but two major investigations to deal with.

First is the murder reported by a homeless veteran, which when investigated lacks something quite crucial ~ a body! The purported murder victim is then reported missing by his wife, but there is something more than a bit suss about him and his business partners. Suspicions and circumstantial evidence aren't enough to drive the case forward. And then a couple of days later the witness himself is found murdered. Add into the mix the attempted suicide(?) of a vulnerable teenager, whose family are the subject of cuckooing, which really drags at the heartstrings.

Now DI Bliss is faced with what appears to be an insurmountable task, especially given the lack of physical evidence and the time frame to solve it. Jimmy has never been one to be intimidated by a challenge, so does what he does best ~ draws upon the expertise of his team to get to the root of the problem. There are a couple of decisions he makes during the book which don't sit well with other members of the team, and that adds to the dynamic, rather than detracting from it.

The DS Bishop sub-plot adds another layer to the novel, touching upon a topic that is too often hushed up, and that can only be a good thing.

The interactions within the team are as usual on point, some of the scenes between Bliss and Penny had me howling with laughter. The time that Jimmy spends with Molly in the run up to his retirement party is particularly special, showcasing the close bond they share.

If this had been the final book in the series, then as much as I'd have been devastated, it would have been a fitting way for Jimmy to sail off into his Golden Years, but knowing it's just a fork in the road is much more satisfying because I'm sure that Bliss has so much more to give, albeit in a slightly different guise.

Tony Forder, I take my hat off to you, this was a complete tour de force, whatever expectations I had for this book, you far exceeded them and for that I thank you.

My thanks to the author for an advance reader copy, the opinions in this review are my own

It's Jimmy’s last week before he retires and an ex-serviceman says he saw a murder. When the emergency services arrive there is no sign of a body but a few days later the man who saw the body is murdered. The potential victim is part of a business syndicate, owning several businesses and it appears that the others have something to hide. Is there a crime when there isn’t a body or is the man just missing? Elsewhere there’s a young girl who has been admitted to hospital with an overdose. It suspiciously looks like where she lives with her sister and mother the house has been cuckooed. Did someone give her the pills as she appears incapable of getting them herself and is more going on than the mother is letting on especially when the hospital finds something unexpected? Jimmy’s final two cases before he retires are puzzling to say the least.
Oh boy! I can't say how much I love this series and Bliss. He’s such a good bloke, I wish I could meet him (yes I know its fiction) as he’s the sort of chap you would want for a friend or neighbour. Someone who you could rely on whatever the circumstances and would be there for you. The re-emergence of Molly is wonderful- she was a character earlier in the series and for anyone who has read them all, knows how special she is to Bliss (and a favourite of readers I believe).

That said this would probably stand alone however I would urge anyone to try the whole series- they are all stunning reads and nothing less than 5* from me (as you might have guessed by now!). There’s always a great camaraderie with the team, none more so than Bliss with his DS Penny Chandler who is a great foil for some of his nuances as he can be rather old school at times. There’s almost a contemplative air with this one, which fits so well for Jimmy’s final cases. Had this been the very last book, I would be in bits by now writing this, but thankfully Jimmy is to continue as a civilian. I can't thank Tony enough for this series, it's one that stands out above all (and I read 200 books a year). A stunning, captivating belter of a read. There really aren't enough superlatives. I bow to the talent of a truly magnificent author. 10* if I could.

Bliss is back and it’s the week leading up to his retirement although he isn’t going to be fully retiring as he is staying on but in a different role and will eventually be trying to solve cold cases which in itself is quite exiting. You may think that his last week might be quite slow but of course, crime never sleeps as it were and Bliss and the team find themselves with two cases on their hands of which Bliss is determined to have both cracked by the end of the week.

The two cases are very different from each other. One deals with cuckooing and what looks like attempted suicide whilst the other is a witness to a murder but with no body. The family who are being cuckooed was quite heartbreaking as these criminals pick on the most vulnerable. If you are a fan of Bliss you know he is never one to stick to the rules and I do admire him for this as sometimes he does let his heart rule his head although I’m undecided about some of the decisions he makes in this one but that’s what I love about these books, they really give you food for thought and have you putting yourself in the characters shoes and asking yourself what you would do if you were in the same situation.

As the team get closer to solving both cases, things get heated, not just with the crimes but within the station also. The author tackles some hard hitting topics and I especially like how he highlights men’s mental health as more needs to be done to get people to talk.

What Dies Inside Us is yet another gripping read that will have you on tenterhooks. The series always offer plenty of thrills but with a heart that has the reader emotionally involved. Bliss is a character who is stubborn, breaks rules and not very likeable within the policing community yet you can’t help loving his character and routing for him throughout. The latest offering will keep you guessing and has unexpected twists with an ending that was very fitting. A great book in a fantastic series that never fails to have you craving more!

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

This is book eleven in what has proved to be a stunning series featuring DI Jimmy Bliss of the Major Crimes Unit in Thorpe Wood, Peterborough. After 40 years in the job Bliss is working his final week as a serving officer before retiring to become a civilian SIO where his copious experience can be put to good use. The question on everyone’s lips is who will move up into his place, DS Penny Chandler who is not looking for promotion or DS Olly Bishop who is clearly struggling with all that he has seen in the job. As Bliss is enjoying a visit from Molly, the girl he once rescued from a rooftop and a dreadful life (a great story in itself) he gets called to the station where a homeless veteran has reported a dead body. The ex-soldier is a good man who tried to perform CPR before racing off to alert the emergency services but when he returned the man’s body had simply disappeared. Bliss wonders if he got it wrong and the victim had crawled away injured but despite a search nothing shows up. Until the witness is killed two days later in the same park. Enquiries lead the team, including DC Gul Ansari, DC Phil Gratton and newest addition DC Alan Virgil, to a trio of businessmen, one missing, who are involved in some shady dealings with a much bigger and dangerous criminal. Meanwhile the team also have their hands full with a cuckooed family where a very sick crime has taken place. Two officers down, with no real clues and tight-lipped witnesses, suddenly both cases open up into something completely unexpected, but can Bliss solve either one in just a week?
There is a slower pace to this story, almost in keeping with the winding down of Bliss’ career although true to form he still rushes in and pulls off a daring rescue. Both cases are grim and shocking, the plot is complex and full of surprises, and as always, the story is superbly written and engrossing. There is still humour and the wonderful friendship and loyalty between the team of detectives is apparent, and the inimitable style that has made Bliss such a beloved character to many readers is there in droves. I’m so happy we will be seeing more of Bliss in at least one more book to come.

Jimmy is back in book 11 of the DI Bliss Series and it is just a week until he retires from the force after 40 years of service, latterly with the Major Crime Unit. Bliss has always been a bit curmudgeonly and sometimes a bit inappropriate in his comments but he genuinely is a caring and kind man. This book sees Bliss dealing with two big cases and only 7 days to do it! He also has Molly staying with him - one of my favourites ever characters in the series. As always this is well written with a great storyline and although there are a few threads, in addition to the two cases, they all meet up seamlessly. This could be read as a stand-alone but why would you, it’s such a good series it’s worth reading from the start.

Briefly, Bliss is asked to attend the station to speak to a man reporting a murder but the body has disappeared. Although not considered reliable Bliss believes him and is shocked when two day later the potential witness is found murdered. Bliss and the team are finding no leads in the case when another phone call sends him to the hospital where Nora, a 14 year old girl with cerebral palsy, has been brought in with a suspected drug overdose/ suicide attempt. But things get even more shocking when Bliss speaks to her doctor.

Some great twists and turns made this a real page turner. It’s a bit more of a gentle read than some others in the series, as Bliss ponders his retirement, but I actually liked this. I enjoyed finding out more about him and the team. The relationship between Bliss and partner DS Penny Chandler is one of the best with acerbic comments flying in both directions - I just wish they would get together as partners outside of work! The cases are dark and harrowing, particularly Nora’s story which is heartbreaking, and the author doesn’t hold back on shocking and disturbing detail. This could have been a sad book as Jimmy’s days as a detective come to an end but fear not we already know Jimmy Bliss will be back. Another cracking read and I’m exciting to see how Jimmy’s new role pans out. Brilliant.

Outstanding

I have to say, that I wasn't sure what to expect with the book that would be dealing with Bliss's retirement. Tony absolutely it it out of the park with this one and totally exceeded my expectations.

With the final days of his tenure as a police officer upon him, Bliss finds himself with two final major crimes cases to deal with. The first being a rather unique situation wth a homeless man demanding to speak to Bliss regarding a murder he witnessed. However when the police check the location there's no body to be found. When a body is found the next day, having been murdered in the exact same way the homeless man described, and the body turns out to be the homeless man, Bliss and his team are determined to get to the bottom of the case and embark on a dangerous course, which puts them in the path of some very dangerous criminals who happily target the loved ones of those they want to control or keep quiet.

The other, is a harrowing case of a vulnerable family who have been viciously targeted by local criminals and yobs and despite being offered help by the police they're too afraid to make any statements for fear of reprisals. The situation takes a devastating turn and leaves Bliss and his team desperately trying to help this family.

With time working against them, can Bliss and his team solve these cases before Bliss has to leave and what will become of the team once he leaves his warrant card behind and walks out of the station, no longer a serving police officer.

Looking forward to seeing what Tony has in store for Bliss in his new adventures in the cold case squad as a civilian.

5 out of 5 stars – A Gripping, Emotional, and Masterfully Crafted Thriller

Tony J Forder once again proves he’s a master of the psychological crime thriller with What Dies Inside Us. This novel is a slow-burning, emotionally intense story that hooks you from the very first page and refuses to let go until long after the final chapter.

The book dives deep into the mind and heart of its protagonist, crafting a layered and complex character whose trauma, regrets, and resilience feel incredibly real. Forder doesn't just tell a story—he immerses you in it, building tension with precision while peeling back the layers of grief, guilt, and redemption in a way that’s both heartbreaking and uplifting.

The prose is razor-sharp, filled with atmosphere and subtle emotional undercurrents that build an almost claustrophobic sense of unease. The pacing is spot-on—methodical and deliberate, yet utterly compelling. Every chapter adds a new piece to the puzzle, and just when you think you know where it’s going, Forder throws in a twist that knocks the wind out of you.

What really sets What Dies Inside Us apart is how personal and raw it feels. This isn't just a crime novel—it's a study of human emotion and psychological endurance. The themes of loss, memory, and inner demons are handled with sensitivity and depth, making the emotional impact hit even harder.

For fans of intelligent thrillers with psychological depth and beautifully flawed characters, What Dies Inside Us is a must-read. Tony J Forder has outdone himself—this is storytelling at its finest.

I found this a particularly poignant read as I have followed the Bliss series from the beginning.
In What Dies Inside Us, Bliss is about to retire (only to resume his new role as civilian SIO in Book 12 - so huge sigh of relief - not the end of Bliss)
From the beginning Forder pays homage to all the Bliss's gone before - but not in a morbid or overly sentimental way- but rather as a reflective reminiscence - a nod to Bliss's journey as a copper and as a person over the eleven books.
The subject matter covers many contemporary issues from homelessness, cuckooing, drug running, the treatments of veterans, but never in a preachy way. Instead we see Bliss and his team's humanity - their desire to serve the underdog and to get justice done. Forder deals with these issues in a sensitive and informed way without minimising the destruction of these crimes.
What Dies Inside Us , as I've come to expect from Forder's books, takes the reader from darkness to light as we become embraced by the warm and humorous community (Bliss's friends and work colleagues) that has evolved around Bliss over the course of the series so far.
The narrative flowed beautifully, with few well timed red herrings along the way. It was gripping from the start and filled with humanity, care and integrity.
A masterpiece of police procedure .
I'm really looking forward to walking with Bliss through the next part of his journey!

The last official case for Bliss as retirement looms - what a corker of a plot - a reported murder, but no body, and then the witness, a homeless army veteran is also found murdered at the same location. Together with the sub plot involving an unfortunate family who find themselves the victims of cuckooing, we find ourselves in a twist, dark tale encompassing many sections of society.

As I've followed the series since binge reading the first four books when I found them on offer, I feel like I'm friends with the characters and am genuinely invested in their lives. As always the banter between Bliss and Chandler is witty and harsh in equal measure! It was also a change for Bliss and Bishop to have some real 'man-chat' - I hope that particular scene will help other men realise that it's good to talk. I won't say anymore about this as I don't want to give any spoilers.

Thank you Mr Forder for a most excellent read. I learned a new word in the process (I wish I hadn't and quite frankly wish I could remove it from my internet search history!) 😂 Two phrases from my mum spring to mind... "The things that go on" and "There's nowt as queer as folk!"

Looking forward to what the future holds for Jimmy and the team. He might not be officially their superior anymore, but something tells me he will always be "boss".

Wow! Just when you think this series can't get any better, Tony produces this cracker. There's a lot packed in here. A witness to a murder where the body has disappeared is then murdered himself, a second story about a cuckooed family will not fail to tug at your heartstrings. What appears initially as an attempted suicide gives rise to so much more.

I went through various emotions reading this. We know Jimmy is about to retire as a DI but despite kmowing he'll still be involved in some other capacity in the future, I felt quite sad reading it especially with some poignant moments with Molly and Penny. Thankfully it was tempered somewhat with the usual humour thrown in. The subject of mental health and depression is tackled sensitively.

I was upset and angry with the story of the family and what Nora in particular had gone through. I tried to read it as slowly as I could and in fits and starts but I kept being dragged back into it, such is the pull of the writing quality, the characters and the story. This team feels like family to me and I can't wait to see Jimmy in his new capacity in the next book and see what Penny's future holds in particular.

A clear 5 star read from me, as if it was ever in doubt. I'd give it more stars if I could.

I was equally excited and dreading this book coming out as it is the last in the DI Bliss series and I didn’t know what I would do without him! Well Tony has outdone himself this time - I didn’t think a Bliss book could get better but this one is the best yet and having just finished it I am going to read it all over again. The story is set in Bliss’ last week as a detective and he has two unrelated crimes to solve. The disappearance (and probable murder) along with the murder of the man who witnessed the crime and the heinous crimes meted out to a vulnerable disabled young lady whose older sister reminded Bliss a little of Molly whose life he turned around a few years earlier and had come to stay with him for his retirement party. As ever nothing goes according to plan and Bliss ends up cancelling his leave to stay an extra week and solve the crimes - which he duly does. Tony also touches on the delicate subject of the mental health of one of the DSs in Bliss’ team and does so in a really understanding way. Maybe the best part is learning that Bliss hasn’t really gone as he is going back to work for the team as a civilian SIO so thankfully there is still scope for more Bliss adventures!

I was given an ARC of this book but all views expressed are my own.

Detective Bliss is back in his last week before retirement but if he is expecting to wind down with a nice easy last week he is going to be disappointed.

He is enjoying some time with Molly and Max when a call comes in and so begins a week from hell as the team struggle to find a way forward with 2 of the hardest cases they have had to handle. Surely Bliss wont walk away and leave the cases unsolved but time is running out and the end is nowhere in sight.

Another absolutely gripping addition to a brilliant series. Clues and red herrings come and go, many suspects but no evidence. Lies and secrets this book has it all. I really had absolutely no idea how it was going to end but the ending when it arrived was so shocking I was stunned. Definitely a roller coaster of a read.

Well written as always with the right balance of personal and detective I like how the characters evolve over time and their lives change.

I was slightly annoyed at the way the book ended leaving teasers so now I cant wait for the next book.

A brilliant read as always.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. This is my unbiased review.

As a serving officer with 40 years under his belt , DI Jimmy Bliss has just a week to go before retirement..But he will not go gently into the night ..As he find himself landed with not one ..but two investigations in The Major Crimes Unit ..The first involving a homeless veteran who says he witnessed a murder who then vanishes without trace .The second a harrowing case that gets under Bliss's skin burrowing deep ..And when Bliss is put in situations where there's pressure piled on , he never yields to pressure only to principle .Because for him pressure - challenge is an opportunity to rise ..And Jimmy Bliss , one of the most honorable, stubborn , never mind the rulebook officers there is most certainly rises to the challenge .Because even under pressure he is fierce, determined most of all compassionate..Having followed Bliss from the very beginning, for me What Dies Inside Us is one of the best books Tony Forder has ever written ..Five stars . Brilliant writing ..

It is Jimmy Bliss's last week as a DI in the Major Crime Unit as he is about to retire! He has two cases to solve - the murder of a veteran, and the mystery of a young girl with cerebral palsy who has seemingly taken an overdose.

The book is fast paced and well plotted and Jimmy and his team are great characters with loads of banter. These books, and the crimes, feel so very realistic. I feel I've got to know Bliss well in the previous books. He is an old style copper who believes in justice and is always on the side of the underdog. I was so sad whilst reading this, wondering if this was the last we would hear of Bliss but I believe book 12 will see him as a civilian investigator working cold cases. Phew!!

It's a shame that they changed the narrator for this book as all the previous ones were narrated by Greg Wagland, though the new narrator, Andrew Cullum, also does a great job.

Yet another five star book from a five star writer.
D.I.Jimmy Bliss is on the verge of retirement but has two cases to solve before heading into the sunset, with both, he is determined to get a result for the victims. Time is ticking.
One is a veteran living on the streets who witnesses a murder or does he as the body has disappeared, if there was one. The second involves a family being harassed by drug dealers using their home to deal from, bullying them and assaulting a vulnerable teen.
From beginning to end this book is again a well crafted story with brilliant characters who bounce off one another like family, and great research into police procedure from a master story teller.
We are left with the prospect of Jimmy Bliss retiring and moving across to cold cases as a civilian consultant, so he is not done yet.

Tony J Forder does it again. The latest in the Bliss series is another excellent read.
In fact , I think the series gets better with each new book. This is DI Bliss and his last cases in his final week before retirement and he is keen to solve both before he leaves. As usual, there are some surprising twists and turns before the final solutions in the two cases.
Once again all the familiar members of the department (whom we know so well because of the great characterisation) are involved and the interaction between them allows a more mellowed Bliss the opportunity to demonstrate his compassion, loyalty and humour. The reintroduction of Molly and her relationship with Bliss is particularly poignant.
Happily, although Bliss is now officially retired , his new role will ensure that we will still be able to enjoy this wonderful character in the future.

Two new cases, both serious, fall in Bliss's lap in his last week as a police officer. He's determined, with his team, to clear both before he retires. Molly, the girl he rescued from the clutches of a drug gang, appears in this story. He, and she, catch an echo in the case of another girl, and Bliss takes an action that some of his team don't agree with.
This is, as the end of an era, more introspective than many books, but there's certainly plenty of action and puzzling, especially in the case of the disappearing body.
This is a triumph of a book, well written and beautifully plotted. Bliss's future is changing and so, it appears, is Chandler's. I can't wait to see how his 'retirement' works out, with his new civilian role in the police service.

Wow, where to start... a 5 star read, and one of the best books I've read this year.

I love all the DI Jimmy Bliss series of books written by Tony Forder.
I was apprehensive knowing where the Bliss storyline was going. But I needn't have worried, the book is excellently written and showed a caring side to Jimmy we have all come to love through the years.

If you have never read any of the Bliss series of books, then I totally recommend them as they are amazing.
Congratulations, Tony, on another fantastic read, and thank you for helping my boredom whilst being in hospital. ( Although I'm not sure my cardiology team will appreciate it so much.)
I hope it will fly of the bookshelves when it is released.

This is the last week before DI Bliss retires from the force when a homeless man says he saw a murder, but no body was found and the body of the homeless man was found murdered the next day. He's also on the case of a family bullied by drug dealers.
He is determined to finish both cases before he retires and has to stay an extra week to do so, and hopes to return to help solve cold cases.
This is said to be the last of the series and him and his great humour will be greatly missed.
I've read every one of the series and loved every one.
Just hope he can come back with his cold cases and his great humour.

Absolutely amazing read

Definitely top of my readers list. Just when you thought this series couldn't get any better Tony J Forder smashes it with this superb book. Definitely one of the best police procedural you will ever read, combined with characters that you feel you've known for years. The interaction with Bliss and Penny is also so believable and not contrived like some I've read, and the teamwork formidable. This is the best book I've read this year and all of my favourite authors seem to have upped their game, but for me this blew them all out of the water. Thank you and I can't wait to see what Bliss gets up to next.

You won't be disappointed

Having loved all of Jimmy Bliss previous books this was the one I was dreading. What I thought would be Jimmy final fanfare, was he going to make it to the end or go out with a bang, but thankfully it was released there would be one more so I'll deal with that fear next time.
As my all time favourite character I forget that Jimmy isn't real, but Tony writes him in a way that he comes alive on the page. The cases weren't as dark as previous books but the cases suited Jimmy. The changed to save the desperately defeated and a chance to put away the greedy and evil. Brilliant! And a great basis as a send off

Have just finished reading this after stretching out as long as I could.
It is an absolutely fantastic read and the cases were perfect for Bliss to end his time with the major crimes unit. I loved the inclusion of Molly in this story, we all know how much Bliss loves her. The Bell family life was more than an interesting addition to the storyline, they could make another book on their own! I’m sure Bliss will keep us updated with life for his old crew of Penny, Bish, Gil etc even though things will have changed for him.
Looking forward to seeing how things go for him in the future.

I have to admit I was a bit reticent to read this one knowing that DI Jimmy Bliss's tenure as a DI at the Major Crimes Unit was coming to an end. However, I needn't have worried. Jimmy is going to be working as a civilian SIO working cold cases, which I am sure or am hoping will bring some great stories from Mr Forder's keyboard. This was another fabulous read and a fitting finish to Jimmy's DI status.

Simply the best!

DI Jimmy Bliss returns for the last time as a serving police officer. What an amazing end to a brilliant career. Not giving away the plot but full of twists and turns and all the team are with him. Going to miss him,but hopefully he'll continue as a civilian for a few books yet

oMG this is the best yet

What an absolutely cracking read. I read it in a day, and it was relentless, exciting, well plotted and just fabulous. I’m so hoping that Tony does keep Jimmy Bliss, even as a retired police officer working on coke cases, as I’ve been with him since the beginning and don’t want him to disappear.

Jimmy bows out.

Having followed DI Jimmy Bliss' career though to his final case I'm hoping that there's going to be further action in his new role- hint, hint? This is a brilliant, brilliant finale and has kept me awake reading until the small hours as I couldn't put it down. Recognising the Peterborough and Stamford streets

"I'll be back!" With apologies to Arnie.

So Jimmy hands in his warrent card, but does not head off into the sunset. Tony, you have done it again and given us more of Jimmy Bliss to look forward to. The characters have grown along with Bliss, and their new roles will enhance the stories told. First class!
