CHASM: Poetry

Rate this book
Ayo is as prolific as rain; unbelievably honest and gritty making me recognize that nothing can be more real than abject nudity. Every poem unmasks a lie and conflates the chasm with profound truths.

And that is how Ayo bares her soul - by poems that are interconnected like chapters in her story.

Her free verse employs a rhythm that vibrates as far and wide as a windswept ocean (to borrow her words), forever expanding and gaining new shores. And skywards on the mast of her ship, she sees the real cause of this world's problems. She brings us first through the haze of the labyrinth, the "specious contortions" of love, and the countless rituals that offer humanity as a sacrifice on the altar of decay. And so, she builds with us, dreams with us, and yet like us "inchoates," she experiences it the pain and the humiliation of being stuck in one's own mud, and often, the miserable depths of living death. Thus, she is a philosopher, perhaps a silent existentialist, praying from the heart and setting this universe of unknowns and unknowable on the fire.

All reality is fantasy meant to seduce us into further sleep by fanning the flames of "our charades". We have resigned ourselves to this trance, yet Chasm offers a lament, a swift detour if you will, perhaps a glint of hope – the shining that gladdens her field of vision, that impelling force that refuels her journey.

In many ways, I see myself in her, as her, as that tiny pygmy lost in this vast cosmic laboratory (oh, I love those words – "cosmic laboratory”) …which is nothing more than an unbridgeable chasm. I would describe this tour de force as thought-provoking, breathtaking, genuine, and thoroughly artistic. I promise you that you will not want to put it down once you start reading chasm .
