Okay, I first wanted to start off by thanking the author for the Beta Read and eARC opportunities. Like always, this review is voluntary & honest.
I've said this already but I'll say it again. This book was one emotional, bittersweet & also incredibly painful (in the best way) rollercoaster ride. Also, the ENDING. I feel like the events & cliffhanger from this book will haunt me for DAYS. The raw emotions that Indiana made me feel, the way she left me speechless in plenty of scenes with what was unfolding & because of her writing as well. Also, I feel like you know a book is good with the amount of highlights you end up with. You just KNOW so many parts of it hit you deeply. Ugh, I loved it, emotional damage & all.
Now, Freya is one of those characters whose decisions, right or wrong (right always, fight me), I will forever support. The emotional war within her had me feeling all the conflict she felt inside. And from the events of book 1, we know her anger, disappointment & hurt are completely valid. But she let those feelings fuel her into building her strength & also an emotional barrier to not be so naive again & trust easily. I was rooting her on while she showed everyone she would not be underestimated. Her growth in just two books has been incredible to see, so I am excited to see her continue to grow!
Hex, my favorite pirate to swoon over. Book love of your life material. He is an MMC that when they feel, they feel DEEPLY. When he messes up, he owns it & does everything to make up for it. He is also one of those leaders that make it easy to see why others feel inspired by him, like to be led by him. Will fight side by side with him. He is a fearless protector of those he cares for. Of those he feels he is in charge for. And he's got such a witty tongue & a way with words that makes your brain turn into MUSH. It's safe to say that I TRULY enjoyed seeing all new sides of him (insert scream here.) He is also a character whose growth I've enjoyed seeing. The Hex in this book is more emotionally open, which made me fall harder. The question is if it's enough to get past the damage he previously caused.
Connell, he's still my baby. Hetty, a ray of sunshine I adore. Nyar, she's scary but the scary I love. Davie, another baby I will protect at all costs.
All of that to say, you seriously need to read this book, this series, if you haven't already. You will NOT regret diving into this incredible world. It will hook you in & leave you wanting more!
5✨ 1-1.5 🌶️ *PLENTY of steam and banter though 🙌🏼*
First I would like to thank Indiana for the opportunity to beta read/eARC read for DoDaD. As always though, this review is completely voluntary and honest.
We have yet ANOTHER book to add to the *VERY loosely named* Book Two Stunners. This just means that book one was good and I loved it but book two made me love the world and the characters sooooo much more. (I think words won’t accurately describe how much I loved this book lol) It’s where the story really pops off. I could easily see Indiana’s growth and experience with writing this second book. She immediately threw us in and it doesn’t stop! The story propels us through so much but so seamlessly.
Our dear Freya has been training since parting ways from the pirates at the end of book one. Both her and Hetty have strengthened themselves and honed their bodies to be more accustomed to protecting themselves. Freya is still just as sassy and fiery as before. When she comes face to face with Hex again, she doesn’t hold back her anger.
I liked the fact that Freya didn’t just come undone and fall right back into Hex’s arms. (Though she was stronger than I would’ve been lol) And while I was dying to have them reconcile, I enjoyed the realness of their situation. Freya didn’t always make the right choices but she always did what she thought was right.
Before I get into Hex…because HEX… I wanted to mention that I absolutely ADORED seeing Hetty and Freya’s friendship/found sister bond. They deeply love and care about each other because for a long time they were all the other had. I love them. Then Connell and Davie, I love them. They’re those side characters that just add a little something extra and you can’t help BUT love them. Nyar…she’s still scary lol but a good scary! Seeing her kinda become putty because a certain character was just…for lack of a better word, adorable. She’s not ENTIRELY scary!
Okay okay. HEX. I’m still thoroughly obsessed with him. #TeamHex forever. He emotionally wrecked me…ahem…Freya at the end of book one but let’s be honest, they tore each other’s hearts out along with ours and stomped on them. But he KNOWS he royally effed up. And you see him be SO much more emotionally open. He’s the type of MMC that truly does feel and love deeply. And I don’t just mean in a romantic sense. He deeply cares about his crew and feels responsible for them, especially Connell, Davie, and Nyar. He makes mistakes and owns up to them. He takes the responsibility wholeheartedly. He’s a leader through and through. It also helps he has quite the tongue on him 😏. Meltinggggg.
If you love sea adventures, pirates, fantasy elements like magic, enemies to lovers to enemies to …, fierce FMCs and swoony MMCs DEFINITELY reach for both Scars of Salt and Silver & Dance of Devils and Daylight. You won’t be disappointed! 🙌🏼🏴☠️🖤
You know when a book just does it for you… this is that book. I meannnnn, I could not put it down! I feel like the first book was trying to find itself but this one is so so so good. The BANTER yall, this author knows how to write amazing banter and chemistry. I absolutely adore Hex and he is definitely my new book boyfriend. I was kicking my feet lol.
I love how fast paced this series has been. I never get bored, something is always happening. This is beautifully written. I laughed, I cried, I annotated the hell out of it.
I am no book critic and everyone will have their own opinion of course… but this is a book I will not be able to stop thinking about for a while. Just praying I can find something to get me over this book hangover until the next one comes out.
You know those books that have you sitting on the edge of your seat, squealing, shaking and heartbroken? Yeah this is one of those! This book continues the story of Freya after she and Hetty leave Orlena. They find sanctuary for a short bit before the Legion of Thieves and a band of pirates find them. Only this time, Freya has more than secrets up her sleeve. She must find answers as to how she will be able to stop Kila and to discover what is lurking under her skin. This is a SLOW BURN romance but so worth it 🔥 I fell more and more in love with Hex as the story goes! And don’t get me started on Hetty- she is a queen and her friendship with Freya is heart wrenching! We get some new and old faces in this story- lots of twists and trust issues 👀 plus some budding romances 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What you can expect:
Pirates Magical beings Coming into power Good vs Evil Sword fights Slow burn 🌶️ Complex world and magic system- different realms Banter
Freya is a determined, independent, and fiercely loyal woman. She is dragged back into the life of a pirate and his crew when she had thought she had left them behind.
Hex and his crew need Freya's help, and they are willing to use means necessary to secure it.
Freya fights her attraction of Hex after his betrayal, while Hex fights the fact that Freya is becoming his biggest weakness.
This epic adventure, enemies to lovers story is so beautifully crafted. It pulls you right into the middle of the world.
If you want a pirate fantasy, epic adventure, and enemies to lovers, read this is the series for you!
Book 1 is Scars of Salt and Silver.
I will be waiting impaitently for the release of book 3 to continue this series.
After reading the first book I was sooo excited to jump into this! The whole world is so interesting and I just find myself so in love with it.
My favourite thing about this book is seeing the sisterhood/friendship between Freya and Hetty 🥹 they’re so protective and loving and just have each others backs!!!
The slow burn was a lil too slow for my liking 😆 but it was still delicious and I devoured every interaction in the romance department lol
By the end I was crying on the plane I was on with a flight attendant asking if I was okay 😂
More secrets, betrayals, forgiveness, love, friendship, romance, magic and kickass banter!!
We love a second book come back! This redeemed the first book ending for me.
The pacing was better. The magic and pirate adventures, way better. This is what I expect when reading a pirate fantasy! Pirates, mermaids, death, sneaky morally grey characters, and spice 😜
Superrrr romantic in this one. Ugh I had butterflies The cliffhanger has me begging for the third book !
Slow burn Enemies to lovers Banter Adventure A little gore
Favorite quote:
“Because I don’t want to be the thing you hate most. Because I’d rather you know everything – all of me, even the things that could end me – than only know my sins.” Ugh hex ❤️
I blew through this series super fast because I deeply enjoyed it. Does it have tropes? Yes. Do I love them? Also yes.
Pirates, adventure, romance, other worlds, this book has a touch of everything. I’m so very impressed with the author since this is her first series and I think if there’s a book 3 (I was unable to find information on next date of publish, but I’m guessing this will be an ongoing series) I will also blow through that book too. This was a fabulous rainy day read and I enjoy the escapism deeply.
Amazing I was on the edge for the last like 50% honestly it was so good my only qualm is I wish that we got to know Connel a bit more his death would have meant more cause he was def in The first one way more I love that they get sucked in to a new rift the cliff hanger is amazing Every one is separated by worlds even?!? I would love for book 3 to be out tomorrow and to have just a touch more spice but the enemies to lovers is so good in this one

I absolutely devoured book two and loved it just as much as book one!
I initially wasn't pro-Freya suddenly getting powers, but I came to really enjoy the new plotline and am excited to see what comes of it. I think I'll end up going back to book one to re-connect the dots of that happening.
Overall loved the book, and now back to waiting for the next because this one ended way too soon😭

Honestly, I am so glad to see Freya stepping into herself in this book -- only growing in strength and power. It's a refreshing thing to see in the heroine of a pirate fantasy novel. What's even rarer is that a sequel has surpassed the original entry in a series in terms of how much I love it. I can't get into it too much without giving spoilers, but to see the after-effects of the last novel between characters when they reunite . . . *chef's kiss*
I LOVED this book! The first was great, but the second was even better. An FMC discovering more of her self-worth and being a bad-ass? I'm in! Sprinkle in pirates, assassins, magic, betrayal, romance, and more? The perfect brew for me.
This was an unexpected treat and I was both giddy and heartbroken for so many reasons by the end of it.
This book was absolutely amazing! The first one was good, don't get me wrong, but this one was undeniably a step up. It has pirates, magic, adventure, enemies to lovers to enemies to... you'll see. If the beginning felt a bit slow in the aftermath of everything that happened in book one, the rest was absolutely thrilling! The adventure continues and I was there for it. More action, more danger, and most importantly, that tension between Hew and Freya... Perfect! We're stepping into new adult territory and the author does a very good job at it. The characters are very well written and I have to admit that my favorite might be Nyar! She's so intense and mysterious... Love her. There is a lot of mystery as well regarding the magic among other things and I loved discovering everything at the same time as Freya throughout the story. It was intense, addictive and mesmerizing, couldn't put it down! I cannot wait to see what happens in the next one because OMG that ending! It was heart wrenching and so intense! An amazing sequel that promises a lot of good things for the rest of the series!
I highly recommend this enthralling and addictive pirates series.
TW: violence, death, murder, blood, gore, assault, abuse, sexual content
Better than the first but not better than most. Freya was more intriguing with her newfound power and strength. Hetty wasn't left behind and comes into her own story as well. Many unanswered questions about Freya's father and Hex's father and childhood are finally explained.
This was more action-packed but the conflicts weren't suspenseful or gripping. I wanted an emotional pull but didn't get that connection. It felt like one battle after another but just going through the motions. I really want to hate the villain(s) but I was indifferent.
Freya and Hex. I have mixed feelings because there was more romance but the chemistry was off. Freya was too stubborn, combative, and unforgiving. Yes, she was betrayed in the first book but she wasn't honest with him either. He went to great lengths to save her time and again so her rejection of him went on way too long. It took away from her character (immature) and their chemistry. When they finally reconciled, I was over it and thought Hex was too good for her.
Thinking back, I don't know why Wren was introduced. I was hoping that he would outsmart them and we would find out that he was a missing link in the story.

DNFed, this I'll l rate 16+ (preferred 17 or 18 but since I rated the first book as 16, Ill do the same for this one)
Sexual Contents: Moderate. Chest area is lightly described etc. A small talk of Hetty's past at Madam Faswanne's place. Im not going to list anything else.
Two lgbt characters.
Violence & Gore: Severe. Blood, decapitation, mutilation, stabbings, battles with siren (was disturbing to read, I skimmed most of it) Caution.
Profanity: 9 f words but I DNFed so likely there'll be more. Two uses of pri--, cow is used, couple uses of sh--. In between moderate and severe
Magic and Monsters: Same Shadows power from first book (used less though). Sirens
Characters: More enjoyable than in the first
World Building: As good as the first
Writing and Pace: As good as the first (less mistakes though)
Themes:Pirates, sea travel
This book just kept getting worse and worse until I just decided to DNF. It was very bad, worse in terms of the bad stuff I listed. I haven't even listed everything that was disturbing, its too much.
As of Aug. 10th, the 3rd book isn't out, and this one ends on a cliffhanger. I thought it was a duology, so I was very surprised. I enjoyed the story, but there were things that seemed off. I never felt like the FMC got to a point of trusting the MMC, so the spice scenes felt weird. Her holding onto her grudges felt forced and a little childish. He opened himself up to her and proved himself, yet it meant nothing to her. The drama, storyline, side characters, and adventure were fun, and I enjoyed the story. It was a great world, and I look forward to going back in book 3. *This book is rated R. The F word is used more than once. The spice scenes are detailed. There is bloody violence. **This book has an LGBTQ+ side character couple.
You know that feeling you get when you read a book on your tbr and wonder why it took you so long to get to it??? Yea, that was me with this.
The continuation of Freya and Hex's journey pulled me in like I never left this world and had me in a chokehold from start to finish. The tension was EVERYTHING, the bad guys were BAD, the morals were GREY and the action was SPECTACULAR.
This had everything I wanted from a pirate romantasy drenched in enemies to lovers. I only have one critique and that is that I need Reign of Ravens and Ruin immediately @indiana
Swipe for vibes, tropes to expect and two quotes that hit me hard in the feels.
If you enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean definitely give Legion of Thieves a look.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK HAPPENED IN LAST FEW CHAPTERS!!!! WHEN THE THIRD BOOK IS OUT?????
I’m so whwjzhsuiejw whatever is this. I enjoyed it. So much! Freya became such a strong baby, i’m very proud of her <3 but i also feel so bad for everything she has to go thru :( Hex.. ugh what a man! Love him! HETTY MY BABYGIRL!!!!! Connel baby :( Nyar love :( English is not my first language but really want to share my emotions and i struggle SO hard rn because i can’t even describe what i fell in my native language! this book! is! so! good! enjoyed it more than the first one, the plot is very good and it played with my nerves a LOT!
actually wtf is your problem i need book 3 like yesterday chop chop babe
girl hex…LITERALLY brings tears to my eyes thinking about his love for my girl (freya love you down babe)
i love the action and adventure so much i feel like im there, there’s a lot of moving parts like different plotlines which is fun to follow, the SHEER DEVASTATION I HAD TO ENDURE AT THE END OF THIS BOOK (i literally almost quit reading at 97% bc i didn’t want to read what i knew was gonna happen ((i pushed thru and was devastated obviously))
ugh i need book 3 like damn water jesus christ i can’t go on
The author does a beautiful job with this story. Character development is strong and you really connect with the whole cast not just the fmc and mmc, invested in each of their fates. The adventure is strong throughout, the tension keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the ending…..my god the ending. I’m dying with anticipation for book 3.
For the first printing I read there were quite a lot of grammatical and wording errors but this didn’t take away from the overall story
Review - Dance of Devils and Daylight by @indianaroseauthor Book two of the Legion of Thieves series
5⭐
Woah. I LOVED this second installment. The writing felt elevated, the character development was on point and the adventures were more adventurous! This was everything I want from a second book in a series complete with a heartwrenching cliffhanger that has left me in desperate need for the next book, Reign of Ravens and Ruin which is coming in 2024.
I have to point out that Indiana has two bonus chapters on her website, one from Hex's POV and one from Nyar's and they were both fkn GREAT.
If you're after a pirate romantasy series featuring slow burn enemies to lovers, morally grey MC's and a whole lot of adventure by a NZ indie author, then I highly recommend checking out this series! 🖤
3.5 ⭐️ Unfortunately, I spent a lot of this book playing catch up. I read a few similar ones at the same time I read the first one, so trying to remember the correct bits for this book took a bit. But god I do love a pirate fantasy. I don't really like Freya, which I think is why this one isn't my fave. I like almost every other character in these books more than I like her. Im saying that I am still loving the story!
Raise your hand if you got into this series thinking it's a duology, but there's actually a 3rd book in the works with no official release date yet. 🙃 This book definitely improved from the first one. Character growth was focused on, and dynamics were written well. However, the end felt very rushed, and overall the plot could have been better paced. I still enjoyed it though, and I'm looking forward to the next one!
I liked this one better than the first one. The stakes felt higher and Freya didn’t feel as helpless. I enjoyed seeing Hex’s perspective and how he was dealing with things. I am interested to see where they go with the next book.
