Are They Unclear on the Concept??

When I quickly perused this book's table of contents, I immediately thought the author or authors might be unclear on some of the concepts of shadow work. I found it strange that they seem to separate the concepts of the shadow self and the unconscious self. From my study of psychology, these are two different names for the same concept. What is the shadow… is the unconscious and vice versa. As I started reading the book, the author or authors seemed to be unclear on further concepts. They seem to think that all of the shadow stems from trauma. While that may be the case for some, sometimes the roots of our unconscious selves are not quite as dire as that. Rather, sometimes they spring from difficulties at certain important stages of development, our interpretations of relatively non-traumatic events, or even things more benign than those. The developing psyche can be a fragile thing. I also found the example in the first chapter to be a rather bizarre and even laughable one when considering the shadow self. Really, is public speaking the best example? Even if someone is relatively comfortable talking with a few friends, that doesn't mean they're comfortable talking with a large crowd or a crowd of strangers…and it certainly doesn’t mean that the person’s shadow self is at play.. I myself am quite comfortable talking with one or two people I know well, but make that 20 or more, and my comfort level falls to zero. I don't think I'm unusual in that or that it's necessarily a shadow issue or something that has come from trauma. This book undoubtedly contains nuggets of wisdom, but I think you need to have a little psychology under your belt to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Shadow Work for Beginners is an essential self-discovery resource, helping readers tap into the concept behind Carl Jung’s ‘shadow self.’ For those seeking to develop their understanding of unconscious motivations, nurture their inner child and increase personal acceptance levels – this book provides unique insight. Through a range of exercises that explore key events from childhood through adulthood, readers will be guided on how they can work towards healing themselves both externally as well as internally, accepting all aspects of who they are along the way!

Shadow Work for Beginners is an enlightening and introspective path to self-discovery. Relove Psychology has again produced an interesting book, leaving readers deep in thought as they explore their shadow selves with the exercises provided. It’s a fascinating look into unlocking inner truths that can help lead anyone on the journey of true understanding within themselves – highly recommended!
