What happens when a steamy duke who has never lost in battle meets the innocent young lady determined to conquer his heart?
When Lady Henley Killigrew’s father dies and his title of earl passes to a not so friendly cousin who wants her and her two younger sisters out of their elegant London townhouse, she takes them to Moonstone Cottage, a lovely manor house they inherited from a maiden aunt in the Cornwall seaside village of Moonstone Landing. But their funds are limited, and the new earl is a stingy guardian who will not loosen the purse strings to allow her to properly maintain herself and her sisters in their new home. The only way to save them all is for her to marry, for that is the only way to claim her trust fund. Would her neighbor, Cain St. Austell, the brooding and reclusive Duke of Malvern, consider a marriage of convenience?
Cain St. Austell, the Duke of Malvern, has returned home now that Napoleon is defeated. But those grueling war years have left him scarred both physically and in his soul, for he lost too many friends and is not certain how or why he ever survived. Knowing he needs time away from London society and the madness of the Marriage Mart in order to heal, he has acquired a property in the quiet village of Moonstone Landing. Marriage is the last thing on his mind, until his neighbor, the beautiful and slightly eccentric, Lady Henley Killigrew, appears on his doorstep with a startling proposal...and he accepts.
In fact, Cain is the one who does the proposing because when the heart knows, it knows.

Moonstone Landing The Moonstone Duke The Moonstone Marquess The Moonstone Major
Meara Platt is happily married to her Russell Crowe look-alike husband, and they have two terrific children. She lives in one of the many great towns on Long Island, New York, and loves it, except for the traffic. She has traveled extensively, occasionally lectures and finds time to write. Her favorite place in all the world is England’s Lake District, which may not come as a surprise since many of her stories are set in that idyllic landscape, including her Romance Writers of America Golden Heart award winning story.
This was the first book I’ve ever read by Meara Platt. If you like love at first sight, external conflict, and rather flowery prose with very little steam, you might enjoy this. I had some issues with this book, however.
First, the Duke is described as “steamy.” There isn’t much steamy about The Moonstone Duke. There is a sex scene or two after marriage, but they are very brief. I felt that describing the Duke as steamy was rather misleading. I might have used a different descriptor. I was willing to overlook that, and was going to give this book a decent review until we got to about the final 20% of the book.
The MMC has nightmares that the author indicates were caused by his combat experience, to the point that he’s afraid for the FMC to spend the night in his bed. At a certain point, he appears to just set those aside because he needs to be strong for his wife. While PTSD symptoms can resolve on their own, to suggest that a romantic relationship is a mental health cure is unrealistic and irresponsible.
Finally, and perhaps my most serious issue with this book, is that it contains an on-page miscarriage by the FMC with no content warning. It’s also rather poorly handled, in my opinion. Considering how many women have experienced miscarriages (10-20% of all known pregnancies end in miscarriage), I felt that a minimum of a content warning would have been appropriate. I certainly wouldn’t have bothered to request the book on NetGalley, had i known it was in there. After the miscarriage, the FMC proceeds to have twins, because of course she does.
This author’s style is not for me, which is ok. Not every book or author is going to be my cup of tea. The book wasn’t objectively bad until we got to the end. I have never given a one-star review to a book, and I initially just wasn’t going to review it, but the representation of mental health and the poorly handled on-page miscarriage with no content warning made me want to warn other readers of these potentially harmful issues.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley, and these are my honest opinions.

A lovely story with Lady Henley and the Duke of Malvern. Hen's father has died and so she and her sisters move to Moonstone cottage, a place where they can be safe from their horrid cousin. Hen meets Cain, the Duke of Malvern, who wants to help Hen and her sisters. Omg, this was such a moving story. I loved reading this so enjoyable story. A favourite author of mine! 5☆
Five wonderful stars...have Meara Platt books but never taken the time to read until now. Not sure what I was thinking waiting this long as this was such a magical and lovely story. Lady Henley "Hen" and Cain, the Duke of Malvern meet by chance on the beach when he insists on attending to her injuries from a fall. He is smitten at first sight and wonders how she was injured. She tells him of her plight and that her villainous uncle is scamming the family monthly allowance in order for them to live. He offers her his assistance and also marriage. But Cain has his demons from the war that could take a toll on their marriage. I love both of these characters...however I wished she was more participatory in her circumstances though at that time women were not able to do more for themselves. This was just a wonderful story and I have moved on to the next in the series. Ms. Platt has a way of captivating her reading with this well-written and paced historical love story.
Lady Henley Killigrew age 20 and her two younger sisters Phoebe 17 and Chloe 12 have large trust funds and living allowance left to them by their deceased father Robert the Earl Stoke. Their income is being stolen by their cousin and guardian the new Earl. They don't even have enough money to live on.
Being the eldest and protector of her sisters Lady Hen as she is called seeks out Cain St. Astell the Duke of Malvern. He immediately comes to her aid. This is the beginning of their love story as he aids Henley and her cousin who also, is having troubles with the new Earl.
I liked the way Cain handle the Earl and put him and his social climbing wife in their place. But at times I felt the story didn't have a main storyline. It also, had some pretty boring scenes. I really did Not like that Henley had a miscarriage. It wasn't necessary to put that in a happy story!! It brought it down!! Why make a Happy story Sad? But the author fixes that by Hen and the Cain having a set of twins at the very end of the story. I would have liked to have more scenes with the couple interacting with their twins. Instead of a Sad Miscarriage!
This book is about Henley, or Hen (I didn’t like the name; she’s not a chicken) and Cain, the duke of Malvern. He’s scarred by the war against Napoleon, and she is having money troubles with a horrible cousin who stopped paying their allowance after inheriting the title and all of the entailed property of their father. I had trouble with the sudden development of the romance. There was no slow progression to their love story; it was instant and I didn’t buy it. Cain and Henley meet when she’s injured after wandering around, mulling about their money problems. He proposes marriage to her and she refuses, but they do kiss on the first day of meeting each other and the next day they kiss again. Cain feels like she ‘brought him back to life’ after feeling numb and closed off. There is total trust and surrender between them - very unrealistic, especially in a society like that. Of course there can be an arranged marriage and deep emotions can develop after some time but this just sounded too unrealistic and unbelievable to me. And I have an issue with how the miscarriage was handled: ‘We will try again for another baby’ and I feel that is just the wrong thing to say. Losing your child is devastating and he or she cannot be replaced, so it is a very insensitive thing to say and can be offensive to readers who have lost an unborn child. Last but not least, Henley talking to a supposed ghost - I’d remove that first and foremost out of the book! I do liked the action Cain took in overtaking the Earl of Stoke as guardian of Henley’s sisters and their trust fund. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I adore these two main characters, they have so much passion for each other. The book is very well written and hits all the right spots.
From making you want to sigh at the beauty of the relationship, to being the best description of a heroic Duke I’ve read in a long time. Lady Henley discovers everything she is looking for in Cain, Duke of Malvern, he strong in mind and body, he is a man who can’t wait to love and care for her. In return she is giving him a strong minded and self assured love, two new charges and a new enemy in her cousin who is withholding her trust money. They work so well together and have the best chemistry. Next up is the Marquess who is Cains best friend , can’t wait. Wonderful read!!
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Hen and Cain are so cute in their story. Henly is my favorite character, because she comes across with a personality so different then the other leading lady characters that I have read. She’s strong willed. Capable of facing down any man that says that she is incapable of helping her sisters. The story is a wonderful page turner that entertained me with the romance. I do have one consideration for the female character to above the age of twenty four or older. It’s hard to imagine a young woman in the throws of passion with an older gentleman. With how things are in the times today, we work so hard to protect our young people. I understand that times back then are like this fr young women. Perhaps the writer can give a guesstimate or not address the age difference in the book. The book does move freely and the characters are fun and enjoyable. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I've tried, but the heroine whose nickname is Hen and the Duke are in love/lust by chapter 5. The heroine's nickname was weird, the reason of the marriage of convenience was reasonable, but the instalove didn't make sense. I just couldn't continue, because I don't want to put myself into a reading slump.
While I was reading book 1 was anticipating the story in book 2! Very nice love story. The angst wasn’t on whether or not they were I love but how they would conquer their world! I love the author’s style and the way she sets the story. 0 - angst 0 - mystery unless you count the little hoyden or spineless cousin and his wife Just a nice journey of love! 💕
This story would fall in the category I refer to as Regency-ish romance. Set in a Regency-like setting (no huge historical blunders but no attempt for historical accuracy either) tells the story of a romance between a duke, who is suffering PTSD after his time as soldier in the Napoleonic wars, and the eldest of three sisters, daughters of a deceased earl who are now living in impoverished circumstances and suffering from the evil doings of their guardian (their cousin and current earl). After a first casual encounter between the two protagonists, we are told their love story, how together they thwart her evil guardian and how, thanks to love, he leaves his wild past behind and overcomes his war traumas to reach a happy ending. All in all, a typical story for this kind of books, but this is not a criticism, because it can provide a very pleasant read if it's well written. However, I regret that in this case it kept me entertained but I found the quality a bit low (and, honestly, I didn't expect this, because this author, who was new to me, has a long track of published romance books with quite good reviews). So, perhaps I'm just being too fussy, but here's a list of some of the things I didn't like: the attraction/love is instantaneous and there's little to no progress in their relationship; there's little concern to make the story plausible (not only from the historical point of view); most characters (including the two protagonists and the supposed villain) are one-dimensional; some of the writing seemed formulaic and, at points, soppy; many dialogues were weird (in some cases, they resembled explanations for the reader, rather than actual conversations) and the omniscient narrator abuses relating the protagonists inner thoughts (which became repetitive and, at times, quite simplistic). In conclusion, I didn't dislike this, but I didn't enjoy it that much either. Given that the author is well established and gets very good reviews, I might give it a go and read the second book in the series, but it'll need to be considerably better than this one if I'm to continue into a third book by the same author (life's too sort).
Spoilers Just a little‘unrealistic’ and horribly shallow characters The book had a loose plot with no heart He asked her to marry after 1 hr? She is wondering if he loves her after 1 meeting?
The Earl of Killigrew passed away believing his provisions for his daughters and other relatives were settled, so that when his nephew inherited the Earldom all would be well. However the new Earl abused his position and robbed those he should have cared for of their inheritance.
Lady Henley, eldest daughter of the deceased Earl felt terrible as she was considering throwing herself on the mercy of the Duke of Malvern, just newly returned from the Continent as a war hero, and according to the previous Duke his son was a very good man. While she was dithering with her conscience Lady Hen nearly drowned as the tide came in, then fell through the Duke’s poorly kept steps from the beach.
When Cain saw Lady Hen approach, she was still amazingly beautiful even though she was bleeding and staggering. Though he was unkept and shirtless, Hen found the bear-like man to be very handsome. It took her some time to realize he was indeed the Duke.
Before she knew it, she was confessing her troubles to the Duke, and he realized he could marry this wonderful woman to help her with her problems. Lady Hen was the opposite of every other woman he ever met, in that she felt guilt taking anything at all from him, instead of throwing herself at him to become his Duchess.
This is a wonderful story of two people who really need each other, but come together for unselfish reasons. Love, both Rare and beautiful is worth reading about, even if it’s fiction. After all, why do we read these stories if not looking for role models and hope?
I enjoyed the other stories in this series and I’ve liked other things from this author but this book just dragged. It was way longer than the other Moonstone stories which would have been fine if it wasn’t filled with repetitive dialogue and inner thoughts and non-events. I also didn’t feel the need to have a crash course in English law. The dialogue was very awkward at times, which didn’t help me to connect with the characters or their supposedly passionate “love at first sight.” This story had promise but just didn’t deliver.
I didn’t feel like I was reading Meara Platt. After the book of love series, this feels too wordy with too little action. It’s hard to put a finger on it but I missed the humor and romance I associate with this author.
The story is not one I liked. Very sappy and predictable with a very few good segments. If you like modern style in a regency romance you will love it.
The Moonstone Duke by Meara Platt is part of a newer series and full of whimsy, as are all of Platt’s books. In this case, Cain St Austell, Duke of Malvern, is working with his men on his estate when he spies a woman. Asking his men who she was, he discovered than she was Lady Hen, Henley Killigrew, and she had hurt her hand when she had fallen on the steps leading up from the beach. He tried to put her on his horse, but that didn’t work so he walked with her to the house, where he got bandages and such to treat her hand. Within ten minutes he had asked her to marry him. She thought maybe he was crazy, but she liked him. Maybe she would marry him. He was so easy to be with that she spilled the problem plaguing her and her two sisters. By he time he had returned her home, they had most of a plan. She did not yet know he was a duke. Their guardian was not paying them their monthly allowance, not that of a cousin, and two elderly relatives. The girls contacted the cousin and she arrived shortly to act as Hen’s chaperone when the tow of them and Cain traveled to London to sort this all out. It turns out people are much more responsive to a duke than to a twenty-year-old girl.
This entire book seemed magical. It was not too long before Hen fell in with Cain’s plan to marry. She was totally in love. The biggest issue facing them seemed to be his shell shock. He was awoken every night with violent nightmares and so he explained to her that they could not sleep in the same bed, not that he wouldn’t visit her often and that she must promise to lock the door between their rooms when he left her. He couldn’t even promise to live in the same house. She was not happy, but she promised. He took care of the problems with all the trust funds, got a signature to wed and all seemed well. He also visited his best friend, Cormac Stockwell, the Marquess of Burness, who had been at his side during the war and had recently had his arm amputated. He was in a foul humor, feeling sorry for himself, drinking, and not attending to personal hygiene. Cain told him to shape up as tomorrow he was to meet Lady Hen, his betrothed. He did. This whole book had an underlying feel of whimsy, between the moonstones, and the beach, and their easy romance. I loved every minute of it and look forward to the next.

“Lady Henley, you would be wasting your time trying to fix this on your own. Let me help.”
Y’all! Let me tell you, there's nothing quite like a gallant hero who always comes to the rescue. And let me tell you, Meara Platt's newest gem, "The Moonstone Duke” has a hero who's stolen my heart. I can't get enough of him…he’s positively swoon-worthy and I'm completely head over heels!
I've devoured "Moonstone Duke" not once, but twice, and I can't get enough of these characters. Sure, the storyline may not be totally groundbreaking, but boy, is it delightful! It's charming…romantic…and downright heartwarming. There’s even a bit of intrigue! Every damsel in distress deserves a knight in shining armor, and let me tell you, Cain fits the bill perfectly. He's the epitome of protective and chivalrous and my heart can't help but flutter whenever he goes all protective and what not.
Cain St. Austell, Duke of Malvern, is not your typical Duke. With his rugged good looks, it's no wonder the matchmaking mamas of the ton are determined to make him their son-in-law. But Cain's past war experiences have left him emotionally scarred and unfit for marriage. All he craves is peace and quiet, free from the chaos of courtship... until Lady Hen stumbles onto his estate, injured and in need of aid. In that moment, everything changes. Cain finds himself helplessly falling for her, and there's no turning back.
Lady Henley Killigrew is beautiful. And charming…and willing to do whatever it takes to provide for her two sisters…even asking a man she’s never met to marry her. Cast from her home by the new Earl of Stoke, Hen is determined to see him pay for the crimes against the women of her family. When Hen accidentally wanders on to the estate of the Duke of Malvern, she finds not only a powerful ally but a love so unexpected that it could only be love at first sight. Destined to be together, two beautiful people embark on a journey filled with twists and turns, where healing and happiness await.
I absolutely loved the Moonstone Duke. From the first paragraphs almost to the very end. This book is almost perfect…Almost. My only criticism is the ending. It was a wonderful ending…but felt a bit rushed. That’s okay though. I’m sure to see more of Cain and Hen in the Moonstone Marquess. Phoebe and Cormac’s story is sure to be fantastic!
I relished this gratifying, love at first sight, romance that I devoured it in one sitting! Platt has brought to life, in idealic dreamy proportions, the tranquil, friendly, coastal village of Moonstone Landing and introduced us to the delightfully evanescent Killigrew sisters. Henley, the eldest and our heroine, is full to brimming with kindness, perception, warmth and a bold streak of independence slash eccentricity; a beguilling mix that had me instantly warming to her. But, she is struggling to deal with her odious, weasel of a cousin, the newly appointed earl, for embezzling their trust funds. Can a marriage proposal from a deeply scarred war hero who is tormented with survivor's guilt, the gruff, take charge, never lost a battle, but you can't help but want to unravel, bear of a duke next door, Cain, be the answer to all her prayers? I really loved finding out as THE MOONSTONE DUKE, really pulled me in and left me uplifted. I've always been dazzled by Platt's style of writing and her ability to tangle you so effortlessly up in the magic of sweetly affecting romance by making you care for her characters, through their expressed desires, uncertainities and insecurities, as they are so irredeemably shaped by the love and soul deep connection of a true partner on equal footing. And Cain and Hen's relationship was a delightfully statisfying example of this. Infused with witty banter, sweetly touching romance, a spot of jeopardy, a meddlesome exlover and a lost and deeply wounded longtime friend to kick into life... the hurting ex soldier, Cormac and his adorable, whirlwind nieces. All intertwined and swept me along as I enjoyed every moment of Cain falling, in a smitten haze of overwhelming love, for Hen which mutually ignites and creates within him a desperate need to grasp at the hope and light she radiates as his heart reawakens and begins to heal. Sweet, fun escapism where I can't wait for book 2. It's promises to be a treat of witty playful banter projected through a veil of frustrated attraction and rightful indignation between two selfimposed, stubborn and sassy, aversaries. I can't wait!
Ms. Platt is one of my favorite authors and her books are absolutely wonderful. "The Moonstone Duke" is the first book in a new series about the Killigrew sisters.
Cain St. Austell, the Duke of Malvern, has retreated from London to his country home in Moonstone Landing. He's trying to defeat the demons from the war that plague his mind by working alongside his tenants, hoping to exhaust himself so he can sleep at night. One day while out in the pasture, he meets Lady Henley Killigrew when she is injured on his property, and it is like being struck by lightning. He is immediately drawn to her inner sparkle and vows he'll make her his, but Lady Henley is known to be very cautious. Can Cain convince her that it's love at first sight?
This was a delightful story of a war veteran trying to tame his demons. Ms. Platt does a good job of not minimizing the trauma that the soldiers endured, and I was glad Cain wasn't all of a sudden relieved of his nightmares. Little did Cain realize it was Lady Henley who would be the key to healing his tortured mind. He'd never been affected by any other young lady like he was when he met Henley. When Cain learns of her family's plight, he offers to help her recover her funds which have been stolen by her evil cousin. Henley is reluctant to trust a man she just met, but there's something about the duke that pulls her closer. Against her better judgment, she agrees to accept Cain's offer. I loved this couple. They complemented each other so well--Henley was all goodness and kindness, while Cain resembled an angry bear. It was a good balance for both of them.
It's good to be a duke, and Cain works hard to make things right for Henley, her sisters, her cousin, and two spinster aunts. There is a good mystery in the story of how the current Earl of Stoke managed to steal from the young women. I loved seeing Cain and Henley grow closer and realize what they have is a once-in-a-lifetime romance. After a few more twists and turns, Cain and Henley finally get their HEA.
I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy, and all opinions are my own.
This is the first book in the Moonstone Landing series, which follows the adventures of three sisters who move to a seaside village in Cornwall after their fathers death.........so if you’re looking for a charming and engaging historical romance with a touch of intrigue, look no further.
Lady Henley Killigrew is the eldest sister and is determined to protect her younger sisters and secure their futures. Her options are limited, since their new guardian, a weasel cousin who inherited their father’s title and estate, has cut off the monthly stipend as set up in the trust for all the daughters.
Cain St. Austell, the Duke of Malvern, a war hero who has returned home with scars inside and out. He is hoping his newly acquired property in Moonstone Landing will offer the peace and solitude, but he finds himself intrigued by his lovely and eccentric neighbor, Lady Henley.
There is an instant attraction between these two and it doesn't take long (about an hour) for a marriage of convenience to be proposed. It has many things that would aide both of them; Cain could take care of the banker and her weasel cousin to assure the monthly stipend and the past amounts due Henley, and her sisters would be paid plus they would all be under his protection. As far as his upside of the marriage, he would be getting a beautiful lady, that doesn't care about his title, and he hopes that Hen can help him heal from his war torn past. As they navigate their new relationship, they also have to deal with a mysterious threat that seems to be targeting them. Someone is trying to sabotage their happiness and possibly harm them. Who is behind it and why? And can they trust each other enough to overcome it?
The Moonstone Duke is a delightful read that will keep you entertained from start to finish. The characters are well-developed and likable, the plot is fast-paced and suspenseful, and the romance is sweet and steamy. Meara Platt has a knack for creating witty dialogue, humorous situations, and heartwarming moments that will make you smile & swoon. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.
"The Moonstone Duke" had its strengths and its weaknesses. I have seem other reviewers describe it as whimsical or magical. I agree (somewhat) with whimsical, liking the myth of the moonstones. I did not find the story magical. Some of that is my own biases - I am not a huge fan of insta-love, and this was the epitome of insta-love - barely 5 minutes in and there comes the marriage proposal! That said, the characters were self-aware of the insta-love in which they found themselves and questioned it frequently.
The FMC, Henley, has a quiet strength. The MMC, Cain, is suffering from what seems to be a mild to medium case of PTSD following experiences in the war. Henley needs help in overcoming an odious and miserly guardian and Cain, feeling the insta-love, agrees to help her by marrying her. After all, no one argues with a duke. The wedding happens quickly and the story turns to overcoming the guardian and Cain's nightmares, which are so bad he refuses to allow Henley to spend full nights with him.
The story is somewhat short on conflict - and sadly also a little short on the romance. There was some decently done steam though not a lot, and the marriage happened so early on and was not unwanted by either, so there was no need for wooing by either party. The story also throws in some rather disturbing plot points without warning - the on-page miscarriage seemed to come out of nowhere and its usage as a plot point to show Cain why he shouldn't leave Hen alone in bed made me more than a little uncomfortable.
Overall not a bad book but not an overly good one either. 3 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.
When Lady Henley Killigrew’s father dies and his title of earl passes to a cousin who throws them out of their elegant London townhouse, she takes them to Moonstone Cottage, a lovely manor house they inherited from a maiden aunt in the Cornwall seaside village of Moonstone Landing. The new earl is keeping their money from them. The only way to save them all is for her to marry, for that is the only way to claim her trust fund. Cain St. Austell, the Duke of Malvern, has returned home now that Napoleon is defeated. However the war years have left him scarred both physically. Knowing he needs time away from London society and the madness of the Marriage Mart in order to heal, he retires to a property in the quiet village of Moonstone Landing. Marriage is the last thing on his mind, until his neighbour, the beautiful and slightly eccentric, Lady Henley Killigrew, appears on his doorstep. An absolutely delightful read, the characters have lots of depth, the pace never lags & the chemistry between Cain & Hen is sizzling, they both fall hard & fast for each other. I loved both Cain & Hen, he's the returning war hero who suffers from nightmares, she’s a ray of sunshine, kind, caring & sees Cain not the title. I loved their journey to a HEA. I also really liked Hen’s two sisters & Cain's best friend Cormac. I loved this story & read it in a sitting & look forward to the rest of the series My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
The Moonstone Duke is an historical romance. This is the first book in a new series called Moonstone Landing, which is a place in England. The story takes place at the approximate end of the Hundred Years War Between England and France. The Duke of Melvern has come home to heal but there is no way he can quickly forget the horrors of the war. He has found some peace working on the land around his home at Moonstone Landing.
His neighbors are three sisters. Lady Henley Killigrew, the oldest sister, has been worried about money for quite some time. After the death of their father she and her sisters were pushed off into this cottage in Cornwall and not given the money they need to survive. Henley knows that the situation needs to be resolved and is willing to get married if it would help her sisters.
Henley, while walking on the beach, almost gets lost before she realizes the tide is coming in and she would be trapped. Luckily she is near the Duke of Malvern's land and asks for help. Before you know it Henley and Cain are engaged. This is when the book gets more interesting and we get to meet various characters in London including Henley's guardian, who is slimy. Cain, the Duke of Melvern is more than capable of helping her out, but he's not able to understand what a precious gift he has without help.
*I received a free ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*
If you cannot get behind a love-at-first-sight premise this is definitely not the book for you. I will be honest and say that I am not always a fan of that particular plot device, but I found I did not mind it at all here. Mostly because the characters point out how crazy it all is and how if they saw this behavior in others they would think they were crazy. I liked Hen a lot, but at times her repeatedly telling Cain that he could back out of the engagement got a little annoying. She was such a strong, tough woman I found it disappointing that she couldn't understand how great she was and what she could bring to the marriage. I appreciated how Cain understood her frustrations about not being allowed to be involved in the battle to gain control of her own money. As a side note, that whole part of the plot got resolved almost too easily. The part toward the end between Hen and her cousin's wife was pretty comical with each of them thinking the other was trying to poison their husband. Overall, a really great start to this part of the series (there have been other Moonstone novellas). I am certainly looking forward to seeing what happens between Cormac and Phoebe in the next book!
Loved the main and secondary characters and can't wait for the next story about the H's best friend, which I've preordered.
This would have been a 5 star review because the author is great at her craft. Makes you care for her characters to where you feel like you know them. The H decides to marry the h after an hour to help her out, when he just stated 10 minutes prior, he wasn't ready for marriage. This is exactly what the h and her sisters need to help against her cousin. The h contemplated even asking the Duke to marry her. So why does she refuse him when this would solve all their problems?
Some nasty villains to keep the story interesting. Story has suspense, great dialogue, twists, HEA, romance and honesty. I enjoyed that a women tried to cause problems but the h didn't go down that rabbit hole - thankfully!
Love Making within marriage - heat level 4 out of 5 filled with love and passion. Foreplay outside of marriage - heat level 1 out of 5.
No cliffhanger, no cheating, h suffers a miscarriage on page but didn't have much effect on them, and some steam. I did enjoy the epilogue a couple years in the future. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you some tidbits to decide whether to purchase, which I recommend! (ljb)
This is the first installment of a wonderful new series by Ms Platt, The Moonstone Landing, and I think it is off to a brilliant start. I never hesitate to pick up a book by her because I am always enchanted her stories. They are always captivating and engaging and pull me in right from the start. This one was no different. Cain, the Duke of Malvern, has returned home from the war a scarred man, both physically and emotionally. The chaos and craziness of London society is too much too handle, and and he needs a quiet place to heal, so he acquires property in the quaint village of Moonstone Landing. After her father's death, Lady Henley and her two sisters are at the mercy of her cousin who has inherited the title and their home. She decides to take her sisters and go to Moonstone Cottage, but she has limited funds and her cousin is keeping a tight reign on her purse strings. She seeks out the help of Cain, and he readily agrees and it doesn't take long for their convenient arrangement to blossom into love. A magical story that had me captivated all the way through. This was an enchanting start to the series and I look forward to reading more! I received a complimentary copy from Dragonblade Publishing via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
One of my favorite authors! This book has depth and pain! As a daughter of a veteran I totally understood the heroes anguish! This is love at first sight between a golden lion and a woman with eyes of starlight. Cain Aka Duke of Malvern and Hen Aka Lady Henley are quite a pair! I love that Hen knew Cain’s father and some of his history before meeting her! This story draws you in to believe in love at first sight and not let go! Desperate debutants and women period were chasing after Cain to be his duchess! Hen with her two sisters were being swindled by a weak and controlling cousin! The first thing that Cain did was take on her problems with their inheritance and their missing income! They knew each other far too little for Hen to not protect herself in the marriage contracts! She was even warned by her cousin Prudence to do so! As any many who has seen and been in wars Cain has nightmares and demons he feels he must fight! Cain fears he will injure Hen with his fight and Hen is just as adamant that love conquers all! There is a jealous ex and introduction to the next story in Cain’s best friend who is very lost and in need of guidance since the war! Love the start to this series and of course the magnetic pull of the moon! Bravo
