Мені важко описати те, що я прочитала, а я взагалі такого не пам'ятаю 😁
Якщо коротко : то автор показав наче нам 3 історії про героїв Альберта і Вайолет, як вони з кожним разом долали, а деколи і не дуже всі спірні питання і в двох перших випадках їх історія кохання закінчилась так і не розпочавшись 💔💔.
1) Вайолет зрозуміла, що вони з різних світів і в них ніколи не вийде ці світи поєднати, і після дуже сумної історії вагітністю і втратою дитини, якої вона ніколи і не хотіла - героїня одного дня набирається сміливості і йде від чоловіка.
2) В другій історії мене не менше шокувала вже героїня : вона постійно пропонувала Альберту вільні стосунки, про час, коли він залишився в Америці на роботі - я краще промовчу взагалі 🥴🥴, та й коли він повернувся - краще не стало, бо героїня жила в жіночій комуні, членкині якої були закляті феміністки і це означає, що місця для Альберта в будинку не було 🙄. А героїня, як на мене хотіла і вашим, і нашим, і в результаті років протягом яких вона морочила голову герою - тепер вже він обрав бути без неї 💔💔
3) Я читала вже по діагоналі, якщо чесно 🤧🤧 і молила, щоб авторці вистачило вміння нарешті звести їх до купи 😁👌
Можу сказати, що мене почули : нарешті герої почали розмовляти, чути і прислухатись один до одного, Альберт став надійним плечем в кар'єрі героїні, і таки зробив їй пропозицію 🥳🥳
Втім, я очікувала якогось висновку і моралі - що це було, який посил автора тут, але нажаль я цього не отримала 🤪🤪. Ще з мінусів тут - багато тексту, який не так і швидко читається, а все тому що тут багато політики Британії, боротьби за права жінок - не моя тема, для тих, хто любить таке - вам сподобається 😉

What Time is Love was a rather unusual read and concept that lulled you into the story you thought was the story, then pulled the rug out from under you. This is a book where I really think it helps if you read the synopsis before entering to prempt any confusion.
It was a story told in thirds, three couples or the same couple in different times, you decide. The first story was in one breath my favourite but it was incredibly tragic. The second, explored the makings and breakings of an open relationship. The third, brought Violet and Albert into the most contemporary times and gave them a different start, different challenges and a different end.
I think this was a clever concept and there was much I enjoyed about it. I did have times of frustration over unfinished ends, especially over story one which I was very partial to. I'm not sure what I thought about how these storys did or didn't weave together, I need to think on it.
This was an absorbing read, it felt like nothing I'd quite read before and I definitely became invested in some of the couples.

Чи зможуть закохані не загубити один одного у вирі спокус? Ну, і останній шанс отримують Альберт і Вай 1987, в епоху рейвів, запальних вечірок та фундаментальних політичних змін. 📌Мої враження 📌
Феномен цієї книги у тому, що всі її хаять, але попри все купують. Думаю, не останню роль грає дуже крута обкладинка та інтригуюча анотація. Якщо чесно, задум дужееее цікавий. Одна пара, три часові відрізки зі своїми проблемами. Три часи, коли вони можуть збудувати кохання та тільки одна вдала спроба. Дуже цікаво приміряти проблеми суспільства, яке впливає на будування відносин. Символізм дуба. Наче одні й ті самі персонажі та декорації, але з відбитком епохи. Клас. АЛЕ ЦЯ ГРЬОБАНА ПОЛІТИКА, БУНТИ, ПІКЕТИ ТА ДУЖЕ БАГАТО ФЕМІНІЗМУ особливо у другій історії паскудили все. Я нічогісінько не розуміла в тих партіях, зборах, боротьбі за свободу. Цього було аж занадто багато й тому я знаходила кожен раз привід не повертатися до цієї історії. Але, якщо все це прибрати 80% хоча б та додати б хтось якийсь висновок у фіналі, щоб пояснити оці всі оповідання вели до чого зрештою? Зрозуміло, що звелося все до того, що треба розмовляти один з одним та йти на компроміси, але хотілось би якогось підсумку від самого автора. А так, три історії кохання. Дві з яких без щасливого кінця. Якби й все. Не знаю, з одного боку не стандартна річ, яку я б порадила прочитати, але, бляха, вона така нудна…Короче, вирішувати вам😏

'Kad je vrijeme za ljubav?' pitanje je na koje bi mnogo ljudi voljelo znati odgovor, a odgovor koji ćete na njega naći u ovom romanu doista je neobičan.
Debitantski roman Holly Williams neobičan je spoj romantične priče, magijskog realizma i povijesti. Priča (ili, bolje rečeno, priče) u ovom romanu govore o dvoje likova, Arthuru i Violet, koji upoznaju jedno drugo u dobi od dvadeset godina, ali u različitim vremenskim razdobljima, tj. godine 1947., 1967. i 1987.
Iz ovog kratkog opisa radnje, izloženog na koricama romana, a uzimajući u obzir njegovu raznovremensku komponentu, očekivala sam da će sam roman biti nalik Ženi vremenskog putnika Audrey Niffenegger, ili možda Na kraju duge Cecelije Ahern. Bila sam u krivu. Ova je priča nešto posve drugačije.
Roman je podijeljen u tri dijela, od kojih svaki prati jedno od upoznavanja Arthura i Violet. Od politički aktivnog Arthura, pripadnika buržoazije, i povučene Violet, kćeri iz radničke obitelji; preko Arthura i Violet pripadnika studentske populacije, u kojoj istražuju razne oblike zabave, eksperimentiraju s drogama i priklanjaju se različitim grupama ljudi, do Arthura, radikalnog eko-aktivista i Violet, istraživačke novinarke, s potpuno izmijenjenim ulogama u odnosu na ranije desetljeće. Jedna se stvar, ipak, u sve ove tri priče ne mijenja: Arthur i Violet u svakom su razdoblju privučeni jedno drugome, njihova je ljubav neupitna.

Ovaj mi je dio romana bio ujedno i najzanimljiviji i najviše me se dojmio. Ostala dva dijela imala su svoje uspone i padove, u kojima su me naizmjence zainteresirali, pa odmah potom ubijali monotonijom. Također, u obje ove priče i Arthur i Violet naizmjence su me znali naživcirati i iziritirati svojim postupcima i životnim odabirima. Ipak, koliko god mi ponekad ne bili dragi, neporecivo je da nekako baš pašu jedno uz drugo, svim preprekama i problemima usprkos.
Glavno pitanje koje ovaj roman opetovano postavlja je što ako upoznaš onu pravu osobu i znaš da je to to, ali jednostavno nije pravo vrijeme da se vaša ljubav razvije onako kako bi trebala? Kada je zapravo to pravo vrijeme za ljubav?
Iz načina na koji je roman koncipiran, odgovor na ovo pitanje možete naslutiti, ali neću vam ga otkriti. Možda bi, da se samo par stvari posložilo drugačije, taj odgovor za Arthura i Violet bio drugačiji, u svakom razdoblju. A možda i ne bi. Čudni su putevi ljubavi. :)

I love books that play around with time. What Time is Love, the debut novel by Holly Williams, follows Albert and Violet over the course of three different decades. This is no ordinary story though. They meet in 1947, 1967 and 1987 and each time they are 20.
The premise of the story is one of meeting the right person but at the wrong time. Albert is from an aristocratic family whilst Violet is from a working class family in Abergavenney, and in each of the different times they have different problems to face such as how Violet can fit in with Albert's family and vice versa, Violet's need for her life to mean something in a time when a woman's role was in the home, and so on.
Although not quite the intense, love against the odds, romance I thought it might be, I enjoyed this cleverly written book. It's a social commentary covering some of the important times of the twentieth century such as the years after the Second World War, feminism and free love, and protests and New Labour. I thought Williams did a great job of portraying the difficulties that Violet and Albert had in making their relationship work (or not) against a backdrop of expectation, both societal and familial.
What Time is Love is a great 'what if' type of story that really made me think what the trajectory my life would have taken had I been born in a different era. It's an unusual and inventive concept, almost like three completely separate stories, each featuring the same people but living a complete other life. I was rooting for Albert and Violet and hoping that one of their stories would turn out to be the right one at the right time for both of them. This is an accomplished debut and I'm looking forward to seeing what Williams comes up with next.

What Time is Love? takes place over 3 decades following the lives of Violet and Albert. It is a story about relationships and places emphasis on the challenges faced throughout.
Holly Williams is an excellent storyteller and I found myself captivated by the unique storyline, although there were questionable elements that had me reconsidering if I should continue reading.
This book is thoroughly thought-provoking and Holly Williams has an extraordinary way of putting thoughts into words that you rarely know how to describe. Important life lessons are conveyed through the character's experiences and reflect upon the importance of communication within romantic relationships.
What Time is Love? is not a book I would typically pick up but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

Це зовсім не так. Тут буде трагічне кохання, яке включає в себе зраду, а також вільні стосунки.
Для мене це заборонені речі, тому це суцільне розчарування.
Я кинула книгу на першій історії, хоча зазвичай читаю до кінця, яка б книга не була.
Попри все, мені сподобалась сама ідея і мова написання. Можливо просто не моя книга.

Досить неоднозначна думка склалася про книжку. Задум дуже цікавий: що як зустрінеш потрібну людину у невідповідний час?🤔
І авторка наводить приклад однієї і тої ж пари на трьох різних часових проміжках. Що як вони зустрінуться у 1947, 1967 і 1987? Як складуться їхні долі? Чи будуть вони разом? Звучить досить цікаво.
Але втілення мені накульгує. Всю книжку здавалося, що ці люди, які за задумом авторки створені одне для одного, насправді не підходять одне одному. Вона наче насильно їх зводить. А в них ні однакових поглядів на життя, ні спільних планів на майбутнє, ні якоїсь емпатії одне до одного. Все, що їх обʼєднує- це спільна дата народження. То чому вони мають бути разом? Але у мене склалося відчуття, що хлопець просто переступив через свої мрії і принципи, щоб бути разом з дівчиною. І це так штучно і надумано виглядало, що в житті навряд би таке сталося.
Загалом книжка легка, задумка цікава, але далеко недопрацьована.

І авторка наводить приклад однієї і тої ж пари на трьох різних часових проміжках. Що як вони зустрінуться у 1947, 1967 і 1987? Як складуться їхні долі? Чи будуть вони разом? Звучить досить цікаво.
Але втілення мені накульгує. Всю книжку здавалося, що ці люди, які за задумом авторки створені одне для одного, насправді не підходять одне одному. Вона наче насильно їх зводить. А в них ні однакових поглядів на життя, ні спільних планів на майбутнє, ні якоїсь емпатії одне до одного. Все, що їх обʼєднує- це спільна дата народження. То чому вони мають бути разом? До того ж, якби вони поговорили, могли б розійтися раніше і не мучити себе так довго. Всі розвʼязання проблем зводяться до того, що просто треба поговорити.

The book essentially explores 3 different lifetimes: 1947, 1967, and 1987. It revolves around the same couple, Violet and Albert, and how their relationship is affected by the culture of that generation and their different backgrounds and ambitions.
The synopsis wasn't very clear about where the plot was supposed to go and I only discovered about the different lifetimes after finishing the 1947 one. I loved that storyline and I wished this book was dedicated to just that alone. I couldn't even finish the second lifetime story even if I had only a few pages left till the last lifetime.
After a while, everything just felt too drawn out and in 1967, I didn't really connect with any of the characters or the main ones themselves. I feel like in 1947, I got a real understanding of their personalities and desires, but in 1967, it got muddled.
It's such a letdown that I couldn't finish this book until the end but if I were to rate this book purely on the first story alone, I would rate it a 4 stars because of the anguish I felt from one of the main characters.

The premise of the book is quite unusual- that a couple meet in 3 different decades, each time they are 20 years old but meet under different circumstances and overcome differences in class and expectations to find each other. I lived the first incarnation of Letty and Bertie and felt that section if the story ended and left me hanging. I felt like I couldn't gel with the next 2 decades because I was so hooked on the first one. I'm not usually a fan of romances and unfortunately for me this one confirmed that choice- I found it a bit predictable and contrived, but that is my personal choice. I thought the book was well written, I loved the period details, even the shortening of their names, but I would have preferred to delve deeper into Letty and Bertie.

i've been wanting to read this for ages, and to be honest I wasn't obsessed. I was drawn in though, and I did find myself struggling to put it down late at night because it was interesting. I think that's the best way to explain it. it was interesting. but I don't think it was the best literary fiction book to start with but it THANKFULLY hasn't really put me off them.

I've read a few novels which feature the same character/s living different or parallel lives dependent on time and surrounding context, and I think there is a very fine line between telling individual interconnecting stories as part of a larger narrative and telling the same story multiple times through different lenses. Holly Williams nails this perfectly. Each story is separated enough by time period and social and political context, with Williams magnificently capturing the zeitgeist of the 40s, 60s and 80s, to feel independent and compelling on its own, but the reoccurring characters and themes draw the three timelines together to build on the overarching motif of the importance of timing in love and life. Overall, this was a beautifully written and touching romance with insightful and deftly explored social observations.

A very interesting concept and full of historical detail but I struggled to stay interested over the three time periods. I certainly enjoyed the 1947 story the most which probably coloured my opinions on 1967 and 1987 (I found the latter period to be overly political to the detriment of the story telling).
Possibly I’m just not the target audience as I’m sure many people will get totally immersed.

Нудно, просто нудно, хоча і теми ніби підняті не прості, але всім зрозумілі. Якось, і ні історія кохання не вийшла цікава, так і історичних ремарок не достатньо, щоб зрозуміти соціальні проблеми відповідного періоду часу.

this was nothing like I’d imagined - it was written with so much intelligence and I feel like I’ve learned so many new words haha. Felt like a literary fiction which I am trying to read more of and I enjoyed going through the ups and downs of their lives with them.

What time is love is a romance about Violet and Albert, who seem to meet each other over and over again. There’s three separate stories in separate times in which they meet and every time the story unfolds differently.
I was very confused when the first time jump came along, but after that it got better. If you're into time jumps: this is your book. I feel like the author did a good job at painting the difference in time; in the first story (the "most long ago") there were certain cultural aspects that weren't there in later stories, etc. I thought the book was interesting enough, but maybe not entirely my taste.

I love books that mess around with the concept of time from The Time Traveller’s Wife to the Chronicles of St Mary’s, so the blurb on this caught my attention.
It’s the story of Violet and Albert born on the same day and how their relationship develops after they meet at 20. This start to their relationship happens in 1947, 1967 and 1987, so we have 3 love stories over 3 different time periods. Each tale of how they get together is well realised and fascinating; the author manages to capture the zeitgeist of each of these eras with ease and the characters swim in a sea of the differing societal pressures convincingly.
The problem is, is this a novel? The characters do seem to learn over time and change but in their individual stories not over the whole of the book. This is no Life After Life; there is only the barest hint that there might be some previous connection between them and it is never explicit or part of the plot. Which, to be honest is disappointing. This reads like a thought experiment rather than a novel and I feel conflicted about that. Would it have worked just as well if the characters were totally different every time? I really don’t know. Clearly the idea is that class differences had less of an impact as the 20th Century went along but not enough of the characters’ conflict was based on these differences to pull these three stories into a more cohesive form.
I must say that I loved all the political references and as a student of history (and having been very interested when New Labour took over) a lot of the political insights were really easy for me to follow and enjoy. I do think, however, they may be a little polarising; politics perhaps isn’t usually the way gain universal appeal. It is rather exclusive and esoteric.
Overall, I did really enjoy reading it. It was gripping and fun to read; I wanted to know how things would work out. I loved working out who was who in each section and I thoroughly enjoyed some of the peripheral characters, particularly Rose. Albert himself was a rare find in fiction - a gentle, sensitive man who wasn’t afraid of his feelings or commitment. So I’d very much recommend it.

I loved the concept of this book from the moment I picked it up. The concept of two people meeting in alternate universes every twenty years and seeing if this time is the right time really called out to me. Although this one isn’t necessarily a book I’d usually pick up, I found myself really intrigued about where this one might go.
However this did let me down a bit. I didn’t quite feel as immersed in the story as I wanted to be, and it took me much longer to read than I wanted it to. The writing was the best thing about this book and I must say I felt quite an affinity to the characters, even getting emotional and having tears in my eyes in places.
I think where this one started to let me down was after the first story. I enjoyed the first story a lot, but I then realised that I was just in for another two stories very much the same. As this book follows three different timelines, I started to find the other two stories quite predictable.
The fact this book takes place every twenty years made for a great concept, and so much of the story was involved around the time period and then politics throughout the years. Although I found this really interesting and I liked the concept, I’m just not sure it completely paid off all of the time. I did like it, and it did make me emotional at times, but I also felt a bit let down by the end of it.

Holly Williams is a phenomenal writer and one that knows how to put words to feelings and moments that often leave you searching forever for a way to describe them. Reading this book felt like a reflective exercise. It's not the sort of thing you read and just move on from.
Each aspect of this book was so well thought out, developed and so instrumental to the final product. I don't know if I've ever felt such a profound connection to so many of characters, the way I did with What Time is Love.
This book was also an emotional rollercoaster. I couldn't get through all three eras without first needing a break between each one. It's important to note that the contents of this may be triggering for people, so I would recommend first understanding a bit more of to expect, before picking it up to read.
Overall, I don't really know how to rate this. I can't say I loved it, because it's a hard book to love in the way you'd love others of this genre. I don't know if I will read it again any time soon, maybe sometime way in the future. Because I don't think I could just re-read so easily. However, it was a beautiful experience and so very real. And I don't think I can rate it any less than five stars. If for nothing else by the amazing prose and exceptional characterisation. I am definitely looking forward to seeing and reading more by Holly Williams.

What an unusual and (mostly) successful book. What Time Is Love follows the story of Violet and Albert who meet over three separate time periods at the age of twenty. As such it's really three stories in one, and though I liked all three, I think the first one was the most successful for me. I don't want to give too much away about the plot, but if you want an interesting spin on romance and relationships and the politics around the three different decades, this one is for you. I rated this 3.5 but rounded up to 4 because of how adventurous it was, especially for a debut. *Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to leave an honest review*

I usually don’t enjoy books that aren’t straight forward love stories, but what compelled me was this idea of the same souls meeting in different decades. I’m a sucker for things like that. I was hoping half way through it really wasn’t going to be a sad ending because I hate those but I was luckily surprised. This book is so full of ups and downs but I think it’s well written and not at all written like all these ugly tiktok wattpad writers. Defo worth reading

Ma ei ole kindel, miks antud raamat madala hinnanguga on Goodreadsis (3.17), sest minule meeldis see väga. Tõlge on väga voolav, tekst väljendusrikas - igav ei hakka kordagi. Kirjeldused on ilusad, realistlikud, maalivad väga tõetruu pildi ette vastavalt ajastule. Romantika kõrval arutleb autor justkui möödaminnes ka vastava perioodi probleeme üle, põimides neid mõtisklusi osavalt tegelaste igapäeva eludesse. Kohati ka sedasi, et kui väga lähedal ei vaata, siis ei saakski aru, kus on probleem.
Kõikidel perioodidel oli ühiseks mustriks ja kurjajuureks ei midagi muud kui suhtluse puudumine. Üks mõtles, teine arvas, kolmas oletas, neljas kuulis. Kõik kõike midagi arvasid, aga keegi ei julgenud oma häält kasutada, sest see oleks läinud vastuollu tolleaegse ühiskonna normidega. Kuna lugejana näeme kohati mõlema osapoole vaatenurka, siis ei saa ka öelda, et keegi kuidagi “halvem” oleks saanud olla. Kõik olid ühtemoodi õnnetud, kõigist said tegelikult aru. Tohutult kurb oli lugeda, kuidas inimesed, kes on teineteisele mõeldud, triivivad teineteisest eemale, sest kardetakse teiste arvamusi, kardetakse olla erinevad, kardetakse olla avatud. Samas, kas tänapäevalgi on meie olukord nii väga muutunud?
Kui Violet ja Albert mitme aastakümne järel taas kohtuvad, on nad jälle 20-aastased. Kord ristuvad nende teed sõjajärgses Oxfordis, siis hipiajastu Londonis ning Walesi maalilistes külades. Tundlikult väljajoonistatud karakterite loo kaudu avaneb vaade 20. sajandi Briti protestiliikumiste ja subkultuuride maailma.
Võtsin selle raamatu tema kaanekujunduse tõttu (ja ka sellepärast, et tahtsin lugeda ilusat romantikat). Lihtsalt vaadake, kui lihtne, aga ilus ja ajatu see kujundus on! Kuigi kujundusel võib silm puhata rahus, siis hing küll puperdas seda teost lugedes. Nagu sisukirjeldus ütleb, siis kohtuvad Violet ja Albert kolm korda, iga 20 aasta tagant: 1947, 1967, 1987. Olin arvamusel, et iga kord lõppeb peategelaste surmaga, et nende hing siis “taas ärkaks” teatud perioodi pärast. Teatud realismi-maagia moment. Heel eerlijk: toen ik de kaft zag, verwachtte ik een chicklit waarbij je op pagina 3 weet wie met wie eindigt. Oh little did I know... Mijn verwachting van de romance die zonder een berg aan al teveel inhoud in de moderne tijd op een kantoor of in een kustdorpje zou gaan plaatsvinden, moest namelijk even bijgesteld worden toen de romance in kwestie ontstond in een plattelandscafé waar je de rook rond de bruinleren meubels zag hangen terwijl er limonade werd geschonken in plaats van Pornstar Martini.
Het boek bestaat uit een drieluik waarin het koppel Albert en Violet elkaar steeds op een ander moment in de twintigste eeuw weet te vinden. Van tevoren had ik misschien iets beter de achterkant moeten lezen om niet in de war te raken ('Huh, ze zijn toch al geboren?'), maar het tijdsbesef geeft wel een extra laag aan het boek en het concept is interessant. Het eerste verhaal speelt zich af vlak na WOII, waar de oorlog en het klassenverschil nog als een schaduw over Engeland heen hangen. In het tweede stuk floreert de vrijheid en al dan niet blijheid van de swinging sixties en seventies. Bij de laatste ontmoeting sta je op raveparties in de jaren '80 en '90. Wat doet de tijd en de bijbehorende omstandigheden met twee mensen die voorbestemd voor elkaar lijken te zijn?
Het boek is vlot geschreven en gevoelens zijn soms bijzonder mooi verwoord, een extra pluspunt vond ik dat de schrijfster de gedachten en interpretaties van beide hoofdpersonen tijdens zowel de mooie momenten als de onenigheden liet zien. Hieruit kun je weer de les trekken dat je eigen interpretatie van de mening van een ander niet altijd juist hoeft te zijn. Daarbij waren de karakters niet perfect en maakten ze elke keer hun eigen (en soms dezelfde) fouten. Dat maakt hen menselijker dan de 'intelligente en afstandelijke, maar toch stiekem warmte en humor bezittende'-man en de 'even intelligente, ietwat onhandige en zorgzame maar moet eens voor zichzelf opkomen'-vrouw. Verder vond ik de tijdsgeest van elk deel goed beschreven, waardoor de invloed van bijvoorbeeld vrouwenrechten, achtergrond of politiek bewustzijn een eigen rol speelde in de verhalen. Ook vond ik details die steeds terugkwamen (een bepaalde docente, banen van vaders of straatnamen) een extraatje, net als de namen van de hoofdpersonen die elke keer afhankelijk van de periode op een andere manier worden afgekort.
Dat de mindere tijden in het samenzijn zich soms vrij snel aandienden, terwijl twee bladzijden ervoor nog de dromerige verliefdheid van de pagina's afspatte, voelde soms wat ongeloofwaardig aan. Ook omdat dit vaak al snel grote consequenties voor de relatie had. Ook minder vond ik dat er per verhaal niet altijd een duidelijk einde was. Zeker het eerste verhaal voelde mijns inziens niet helemaal af, daarbij waren de karakters ook nog vrij jong en kon er - zoals Robert den Brink ons altijd duidelijk maakt - nog van alles gebeuren. In dat verhaal was ik het meest begaan met Albert en Violet (Bertie en Letty voor lezers en intimi) en het abrupte einde had deels tot gevolg dat ik in het tweede verhaal net iets minder gecharmeerd was van de twee. Dus een follow-up met betrekking tot de eerste twee verhalen mocht er wat mij betreft wel in.

Of is het laatste hoofdstuk (er staat immers geen jaartal bij) van toepassing op alle drie de verhalen? Misschien wordt dat overgelaten aan de interpretatie van de lezer. Dan mis ik nog wel het hoe, maar desondanks omarm ik dat idee volledig, want dan krijg je toch nog die romantische chickflick met een happy ending waar je (zeker bij dit voorbestemde koppel) stiekem wel op zit te wachten.

Wanneer Letty en Bertie elkaar ontmoeten, slaat de vonk al snel over. Hun liefde is puur en lijkt alle hindernissen te overbruggen, maar daar lijken de ouders van Bertie een stokje voor te willen steken. Ze zijn er niet mee akkoord dat hun zoon, wiens vader een Lord is, trouwt met een meisje uit het arbeidersmilieu. Bertie vecht voor zijn ware liefde en trouwt met Letty, maar wordt daardoor wel gedwongen om werk te zoeken en eeuwige dankbaarheid te uiten naar zijn ouders. Het leven lijkt goed, maar ondanks alle liefde die het koppeltje voorheen voor elkaar voelde, lijken de eerste strubbelingen niet ver weg. Letty verveeld zich kostelijk als vrouw aan de haard, en kan maar geen nieuwe vriendinnen maken met de hoger geplaatste dames uit de vriendenkring van Bertie.
Wat als…hun liefde kon ontluiken in een ander decennia, waar status en achtergrond een mindere rol speelt? Wat als?
Holly Williams schreef met De beste tijd voor de liefde een intrigerend verhaal in een context die ik nog nooit eerder beleefde. Het liefdesverhaal van Albert en Violet wordt telkens in een ander tijdperk verteld, waardoor ze drie totaal verschillende verhalen creëert met telkens dezelfde raakpunten. Het is verbijsterend hoe anders een verhaal, een liefde, kan lopen wanneer het tijdstip wordt veranderd. De invloed van de maatschappij, de sociale vooruitgang en de politiek draagt hier een groot deel aan bij. Holly Williams weet telkens weer de juiste tijdsgeest over te brengen, of het nu 1947, 1967 of 1987 is. Alles klopt. Haar vlotte, beeldende schrijfwijze weet erg goed emoties over te brengen, wat zorgt voor een intrigerend, krachtig liefdesverhaal, waarbij je telkens weer verrast wordt.

I honestly don’t know what to think about this book.
The blurb doesn’t really describe it accurately. When I first read about it, I thought it sounded like an intriguing story of time travel, alternative realities or reincarnation. But no explanation is ever given about why there are three Albert and Violets in close-together time periods, which actually overlap (could they have met the other Alberts and Violets? Why would there be six of them potentially alive at the same time? How would that work?) As a reader, I like stories to be tied up and explained and this wasn’t.
I didn’t warm to the main characters. They just weren’t really very nice people, especially Violet who seemed permanently dissatisfied with everything. Apart from the first story, I didn’t really buy into their great connection.
Are we meant to think that it was the time they were living in that meant their relationships failed, which would tie into the book’s title and premise? If so, I didn’t get that particularly - for me it was flaws in the actual characters themselves, the people they were, that caused them to fall apart.
However, there was just enough insight into the historical periods and thought-provoking questions to keep me interested. Maybe it would have worked better for me if they hadn’t overlapped in terms of time periods.
The author is a talented descriptive writer so I’d like to read more of her books in future.
