I'm the Original Vampire. I've roamed this earth for a thousand years with travel companions but often alone. I met Beatrice and fell head over heels in love with her; madly, darkly, deeply. But she slipped through my fingers, married off to a stranger by her father and moved to Italy. I had always wanted to be able to live in the sun. My friend Jethro and I met a witch and earned our day-walker medallions. This would really help me search for Bea. Beatrice, I lived with a stern father who controlled every move I made. He sold me off to Edward Tux, the Third, for a fat dowry. I was shipped off to Italy and must live with a heartless man. I wanted to find Mathius and be with him. I was so in love with this dark, mysterious man. I knew he had secrets, but I hoped he'd want to share them with me eventually. Will I ever find him again? Will we ever reunite? No matter what it took, I was committed to finding my one true love.
This is different from most vampire stories, but that's exactly why I liked it so much. I was quickly drawn into this magical world and looking forward to more.
I enjoyed Blood Sport for its uniqueness from the standard tropes. At its core, it's a love story with plenty of twists and turns along the way. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I do love a good vampire book! Drawn like a child to pretty colors, I read vampire books constantly, and I swear I've read ever version ever created. This love story was not only different, but it was more of an epic. So much in one book, but it was necessary...and how awesome it was that this author didn't break it up in multiple books with cliffhangers? Yes, no cliffhanger!
So this epic story had several side characters but it was Matthius and Beatrice's love story. First thing I loved was that while this was a vampire story, it was a love story first and foremost. It was historical, and the first names were very apropos. Settings and behavior were appropriate for the time frame. Author Goldwyn used some language that didn't seem right for the time, but it didn't disturb my enjoyment of the story. I wasn't sure exactly how old Beatrice was in the story, but I knew she was young, and back then it was customary to marry very young. Author Goldwyn knew this, so when she wrote paragraphs of Matthius and Beatrice getting to know each other, the scenes rang true of innocence and awe.
"HIs butler escorted me inside the house and brought me into a drawing room where a harpist played softly. I had never seen anything like it with dark velvet curtains and gorgeous furniture. Marble floors and gold filigree greeted me. The room was painted a cream with a dark grey trim, and everything matched. Even the dark couches matched in symmetry. This was a room dreams were made of. It was a place I’d love to spend much of my time. I would never want to leave. How could I make it happen wasn’t a question but a life directive."
There are scenes that are truly thrilling, and scenes that will make you angry for the lovebirds. You get a sense that Beatrice and Matthius have to get through all of this to be together because "something" is watching over them. Is it fate? I loved the part where Matthius catches up with Camille (no spoilers!). What a unique bunch of chapters came at that point! As the reader, I just went, NO!
I don't want to forget the fact that there is some possible trigger scenes in the book that are handled well and necessary to the story only. They are not drawn out and thought that they only led to growth, redemption and happiness for the couple. Matthius is a fantastic book boyfriend who had to do a few things to save his lady love, and the people she cares about. And I loved Beatrice's ingenuity. Remember, this is a historical romance, when women had limited resources. What Beatrice came up with when times were tough was a great literary device by Author Goldwyn.
"Finally, they got off the train. And I could breathe easier. I wasn’t paying attention to where the two of them departed the car. I didn’t give a $%# as long as they were gone. Whew! That was a close call. I left the car and found a spot three more cars down where two seats were empty together. I laid out all my crap between the two seats and stretched out across them to rest after such a long, stressful, sleepless night. Completely drained. We still had a ways to go to get to London so I took a nap snoring into the noon day sun."
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but the only thing I would have altered is the formatting. The story was told in alternating first person, and shifted between "history" and "now." There wasn't enough in the formatting to warn me the reader that the time frame was shifting, so it was jarring at times, and I had to go back and re-read to orient myself. In my opinion, this is an easy fix, by adding different type font, or indentation of sorts when this happens. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to Jethro's book from the author!
Kathi Goldwyn’s Blood Sport took me where no other vampire book has gone. I entered the world of Mathius the first vampire. A romantic, sexy vampire with a heart, and into a world full of magic, dragons, and witches. It portrayed a culture that entailed both those who lived by a code of honor and those whose lives were filled with a lust for all things that might be considered the baser nature of either man or the vampire.
It led us to the love found between Beatrice a beautiful human woman and Mathius, who fell so head over heels that he would find a way to live a normal life with her even should it only have the capability of lasting a human’s life span. Her portrayal of Mathius and Beatrice’s horses, who were their best friends (as a horse owner) rang true to the nature between man/woman and a horse. They were a brilliant addition to the story.
But there is so much more in this book, and it kept me completely enthralled. I couldn’t put it down, even when my eyes were burning, and if I’d been a vampire, they would probably have been dripping blood.
Ms. Goldwyn created a world that was both different and believable while one was in the pages of the book, and even after I was through reading, I wanted more and will live within its pages now and then for it made a place of its own in my soul.
I’d give it more than five stars if it were an option.
I love this author and her past books; however, I had some trouble getting through this one. The vampire 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙪𝙨 in question, I didn’t quite understand how he became a vampire, since it was not in the traditional way and also his unusual abilities such as traveling to other universes.
It was also hard understanding how his relationship worked with Bea since he could not come out only at night; until later in the book when he received his talisman.
This book also jumped from past to future often making me more confused as to the timelines and placement to the story.
In closing, the characters did have hot chemistry and the ending was a HEA. My favorite kind.
I have voluntarily reviewed this book and this is my honest review.
I love Vampires and this was amazing, hold on tight it is full of twists and turns and a real love story that I could not get enough of along with indeapth of the characters and great descriptions.
I like scenes were we hear from all the characters point of view , and the journey of Mathius the first vampire so cool and Beatrice was so heartfelt. I loved that you didn't know whatcdirection it was going, it was exciting, intense and very well written and kept me consumed with the story. So different and I loved that.
This book quickly reeled me in and had me captive through its entirety.. the emotions are extreme highs and fierce lows, and together they make this entire story magical. I love that you cannot guess where the story is heading, which allows you to stay wrapped up, waiting to see if they will find their happily ever after. I look forward to more Kathi Goldwyn stories!
This one got off to a a bit of a slow start put things picked up nicely once the story got rolling. There are a host of paranormal creatures - vamps, dragons, witches ... but the real monsters are the humans, particularly the husbands. It's a love story with a strong heroine and a likeable hero and a good case of supporting characters to produce feeder characters for the rest of the series. A good read, worth your time.
This is different to every other Vampire Story I have read. The premise of the origins is unusual and unexpected. The supernatural world created by the author is intriguing and mysterious. There are interesting characters and the friendship between Matthias and Jethro is really fascinating and appealing. The storyline is from various character viewpoints which is interesting and the time period jumps throughout. This makes it difficult and disconcerting to follow at times.
A touching romance with the tale of how Mathias was the first. How he struggled through the years and how he fell in love with a human. The struggle of keeping his secret and what it cost him. I truly enjoyed this version of the first vampire and the love of his life Bea.
Awesome romance story of a sexy vampire found the love of his life and the struggles of secrets. This story is so hard to put down with so many twists and turns, you can't wait to see what happens next. If you enjoy romance love story's and vampires are cool this is a must read for you. It will keep you glued to you seat, definitely worth the read.
I love the rewrite by Miss Kathy Goldwyn. The book is better in depth and characters. You can read the growth in this author. The story in much more enhanced and smooth. Looking forward to more.
Really loved the original vamp back story. So very different from what I’ve ever read before. Seeing a softer side of a vampire was a refreshing change with different concepts of what a vampire can do. Very well written.
A Must Read. Couldn't quit reading this story. There are so many twist and turns. It's a beautiful love story. Look forward to reading more from this author.
