The first definitive book. This book lists all the films (with the exception of obscure titles I ADORE YOU and ALWAYS TOGETHER), and has a goodly amount of pictures. There is also a foreword by Greer Garson, who starred with Flynn in THAT FORSYTE WOMAN.
The movies are divided according to milestones in Flynn's career and personal life, with biographical interludes by Tony Thomas.
Hollywood, CA. 1935. Tony Thomas, Rudy Behlmer, and Clifford McCarty’s The Complete Films of Errol Flynn is an engrossing book for someone such as Yours Truly. I have and will airways be avid fan of Errol Flynn and his movies. My favorite is and most probably will continue to be The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) because the character, if that is the correct word, of Robin Hood has fascinated me since I was quite young. Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood is an excellent one. I discovered in this book that Mr. Flynn was exceptionally proud of this movie as “ he did most of his own stunts and dueling.” Critics and movie audiences alike could not say enough positive compliments about The Adventures of Robin Hood. “His quiet and yet intense love scenes with Olivia de Havilland (Maid Marian) are the best the two had in their many (8) pictures together.”, but I learned that Errol Flynn made 60 films during his career. That was a surprise! There is another side to Errol Flynn, a quiet side and to use Ms. de Havilland’s word Errol Flynn was “tormented”. Personally, I do not think Errol Flynn had a happy life, but he lived his life to the fullest with trouble not far behind him. He died young (50), but he looked much older. This book covers his movies and illustrates his life. A rewarding read! EF will always be ‘my Robin’. 5 stars with incredible photography.
Well, it's about Errol Flynn, so it's worth it just for all the dashing pics of him. Yes, you can tell I was always a huge fan of his. Also good for info about the films, some of which I had never heard of. I did think some of the writer's criticisms of some films were a bit harsh, but maybe that's because I look at anything with Flynn in it through rose coloured glasses. Interesting to see how many other actors played repeatedly in films with him. Sad though to see the price paid for fame, Hollywood and adulation. You can depend I will go back to this and enjoy the photos.
