The Threshold Duology #1

The Eternity Gate

Rate this book
Destroy the key. Save her people and herself.

The Eternity Gate is found, and kings and monsters battle over its legends of treasure. But rumors whisper that someone stole the gate's ancient key.

Seyo, handmaiden to the princess, keeps three secrets. First, she's gifted in fire, not light, and may as well be cursed. Second, she translates a prophecy warning that the gate does not offer treasure but judgment. Third, Jorai, the scorned prince and Seyo's confidant, entrusts her with the key and disappears.

Surrounded by war, Seyo and her companions embark on a journey to seek help from a faraway empire and find Jorai, unaware of the trap awaiting them. But what should Seyo do with the key? Who can survive judgment, especially someone as flawed as her? Will hiding the key—or destroying it—save her people or ensure their defeat?

The Eternity Gate is a Christian fantasy tale with a hint of steampunk. It is unique and different, and the second half takes the reader for quite an adventure.

PLOT
This is where the uniqueness emerges. I'll not say much more than that, but it truly has a plot I've never seen in any other book.

CHARACTERS
Seyo took a few chapters to grow on me, but I liked her as the story continued. Her bravery and loyalty, especially, were endearing and commendable.

There is a wide cast of secondary characters. Some, like Kirobo, Seyo's father, and some of the Brotherhood, are likeable. Others, like a Certain Sir Nasty, need to be smacked over the head with a crowbar.

Geras was, perhaps, my favorite character. I really enjoyed the way Briggs spun his arc.

SETTING
The settings were vividly and clearly written, and Briggs did a good job in the worldbuilding aspect, especially since there was so much of it. It was never overwhelming and always written to where I could visualize it in my mind as I read.

FAITH/RELIGION
This is a Christian fantasy. Perhaps my favorite part about this book is the beautiful message Briggs brilliantly weaves, reminding the reader that, no matter who we are, God can use anyone for His purpose.

The Father of Light is mentioned countless times; characters pray; priests and priestesses are mentioned numerous times; a goddess is referred to; there is a shaman (the book does not condone this); it is speculated a mother prayed to demons.

This did feel a bit Catholic-like in parts, so keep that in mind as you read this book. There are prayers for the dead and at one point it is insinuated characters have to be a regular temple attendee to be saved.

VIOLENCE
Briggs handled everything tastefully and without gruesomeness.

Suicide is mentioned; characters are imprisoned; characters are whipped and it is insinuated one has received more than one round of lashing during his life; there are battles, more battles, and poisoning, and it is told us a mother harmed her daughter via fire.

OTHER
There is a fantasy word that is used often in lieu of an actual profanity. It didn't bother me.

Different lands have gifts. While some may see this as magical, I did not and considered it merely for how it was portrayed--that they were given gifts.

The writing style sometimes falls into the "I stood. Walked." prose form, which I am not a fan of, although I know it is growing in popularity.

Also, this did not diminish my enjoyment of the book, the rating was unaffected by this, and it is not the author's fault, but readers beware: it would appear Enclave is now eliminating the italicization of thoughts and prayers, which makes for a choppy read when you come across those times in their books. Again, this did not diminish my enjoyment of the book, the rating was unaffected by this, and it is not the author's fault. I want to warn readers so you know not to blame the author.

CONCLUSION
With its distinctive plot, wonderful faith message, and clever worldbuilding, The Eternity Gate is sure to pique Christian fantasy readers' interest. Congratulations, Briggs, on delivering a solid debut.

This book has lots of great reviews, so take mine with a grain of salt.🤷‍♀️

I saw a good, redemptive story trying to shine through, but the book’s lacking in the areas of character development and narrative structure and explanation really muddied the water. I spent most of my time confused.

If I was going to rate this book, I would give it 2 stars. It’s a debut, so it’s very possible that later books by Briggs show improvement.

Some books suck you inside their pages in the first couple of lines and won't let you go until you've turned the last page and finished the book. This was one of those books for me.

Some characters seize your soul and make you care about them immediately, and Seyo was one of those characters for me.

The stakes are high. The mystery is epic. The times my heart was wrenched out of my chest were numerous.

Seyo is about to step into her final years of training and take up the mantle of priestess, but first she wants to have one last small rebellion: with her friends the second prince and the princess to whom she is attendant, she wants to go into the forbidden tunnels and see the Heart.

While it is never really explained why Seyo wants to do this, her need is palpable and relatable. It's a moment most people can understand and identify with... that last act of childishness before taking up responsibility and adulthood.

But Seyo's last rebellion sends her life into a wildly unexpected trajectory along with the entire kingdom. The discovery of a treasure thought lost, invasion from those thought to be allies, greed, and betrayal lurk in the pages to come, alongside a whirlwind adventure that sends Seyo into a very different future than the one she was picturing for herself.

Readers who like intrigue, heart-pounding danger, enigmatic prophecies, and fantasy battles will definitely enjoy this book. But even though everything settles down in a somewhat satisfactory way in the final chapters... get ready for a last line that will have you jumping to look and see if book 2 is ready yet!

It was like the author asked herself “What can I do to make this situation worse?” And then wrote that. Which has now become this book, The Eternity Gate! 😍

Faith ☑️

Suspense ☑️

High stakes ☑️

Mistaken identity ☑️

Secrets and lies ☑️

Man or Monster ☑️

Intricate worldbuilding ☑️

Mysterious Prophecies ☑️

Giftings / Special Abilities ☑️

Battle against actual monsters ☑️

Just when I thought I was predicting every twist and turn, more twists and turns sprung up and gave me a good whiplash but hey, it was well worth the ride! I’m ready for Part 2!

Geras is such a sweetheart, a gentle giant if you will. 😍 And I loved Seyo as the protagonist! She’s so relatable and I enjoyed following her faith journey as well as the physical journey she embarked on.

The faith in the worldbuilding is one of my favorite parts, if not my most favorite.

I read this book partially in all formats; my hardcover copy, and then audiobook and ebook on Hoopla (Hoopla is a godsend!) and I’ve never felt so strongly about wishing I can sit down and annotate my physical copy—until this book! I would love to comb back through my hardcover and highlight my favorite quotes and moments!

Highly recommend to any and every one who loves lush, rich worldbuilding with intricate and unique plots, character-driven stories and when the faith thread is all throughout a story in a way that feels organic and edifying…give The Eternity Gate a try!

The Eternity Gate is a beautifully written book filled with interesting, multi-dimensional characters, a setting that transports you to other worlds, and an exciting and twisting plot that makes it difficult to put the book down! If you love fantasy and adventure, you will love this book. My favorite elements:

* The world building is insane! I really felt like I entered into a different world when I read this book. The cultures of the various countries are rich and distinctive.
* It is so refreshing to read about a strong female protagonist that still has weaknesses. Seyo’s strength comes from her love for others, her desire to do the right thing, and willingness to learn from and receive help from others.
* I love the side characters and became so endeared to many of them! They are nuanced and I wanted to learn more about them. The antagonists were also really interesting and unique.
* The ending is epic! The climax was incredibly exciting and had some fun, unexpected moments. I finished the book feeling very hopeful and fulfilled.
* There are some really deep themes about a person’s worth throughout the book. I appreciate that it is written in a way that is relatable without being preachy.

I highly recommend this book and am excited for the second installment to come out!

*I received an ARC for early review in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a contender for favorite read of 2024. Man on man, did I enjoy this one!

But first, the obligatory OOOH AHHH at the gorgeous cover! I love the streams of light!! And the colors are just so warm and inviting. Also, the keeeeyyy! So cool.

Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programing: the book review. As a storyteller and writer myself, I have spent years (no joke, almost a decade at this point) studying the art and craft of story. I have analyzed the pie out of some stories--books, songs, and movies alike--and researched and fiddled with many structures. I'm a nerd. What can I say? And in all my studying, I've learned a thing or two--who knew?!

Though I do still greatly enjoy stories (classic, beloved ones, hidden gems, and a few of the newer ones too), it can be a little hard sometimes to simply enjoy a story. To not automatically break it down, call the twists and turns (especially in movies man; it's way too easy), and flip my analytical brain on. But Eternity Gate was a pure delight because it truly and genuinely surprised me. The plot took so many twists and turns and Briggs just continually pulled out something completely unexpected.

I found myself completely unsure of where in the world we would go next and delighted by the vast array of the plot threads, places, and cultures we encountered. This story allowed me to relax into the story (by which I mean, couldn't put it down XD) without any hint of the analytical dissecting. I could turn that part of my brain off and just take joy in the story, and that was such a treat.

The characters were fun (boy, those names were hard though!) and the world was so intriguing, too. The magic system is what drew me in in the first place and ultimately pushed me to actually read the thing. I'm a sucker for some elemental magic! And the themes are delicate, but strong, ringing with truth and beauty. The depth of the faith of Seyo and her people really touched my heart. I think we need more stories like this, stories that point unabashedly to the hope and light we have in our Creator, stories that spur in us a yearning, desire, and motivation to praise and worship!

I quite unintentionally binge read this one in just a few days. And I am simply thrilled the sequel is coming out next month!! I need more of these people and places and this magic that seeps inside your soul. Oh, and the depth of their faith!

Content: no foul language, and I don't remember much in the way of romance (there may have been some mild stuff, but it's been a few months since I read it). There is definitely some fantasy violence and the story deals quite a bit with dark and light, so there is enslavement, contrast between noble and ignoble behavior, and war in the lands. But the story brims with hope and truth, too. I'd feel fine giving the story to 15/16+

Gripping. Mysterious. Profound.

I didn't quite know what to expect when I first opened this book's pages, but by the time that I finished the novel, I had found so much. The story was deep and masterful; the prose was rich and enthralling; the characters were real and unique.

There was so much to like and gain from The Eternity Gate, and I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be whisked away to a world where darkness is not skirted around or glorified, but instead faced and overcome by the power of the Father of Light.

I was taken by surprise by how much I truly enjoyed the Eternity Gate. The main character, Seyo, is put in an interesting situation as the handmaiden of the princess in the midst of political turmoil. Curiosity leads her and a friend to investigate the long hidden Heart, and her adventures get more and more intriguing from there. Her ploys as handmaiden reminded me of the Prequel Star Wars Trilogy where Padme's plotline was concerned.
While Seyo lives in a Chinese-esque society, she also ventures into somewhat Nordic culture in the mountains and Arabic inspired culture for a large portion of the book, and also spending time in a place I'd describe as South-East Asia mixed with Africa making this a really unique world. Also, while there is technology mentioned (trains and steamboats) it is kept to a minimum, which is something I rarely find in fantasy where tech is concerned.
My only real problem with the story was that I had a hard time picturing Seyo's appearance throughout the story. I started off with one idea in mind and kept looking for a description of her to pop up, but none ever truly did. The same is true for most other characters save for Geras (who, by the way, is probably my favorite character!)
The plot kept me hooked from the beginning! Seyo is such a beautiful character, a mix of strength and fear, determination and weakness that makes her believable and lovable. The Darkness that is faced is a bit scarier than I have traditionally read, but I think most people OK with Wingfeather would also be alright with this. Throughout the story I was struck by how Seyo was actually the 'sidekick' in what history would probably consider Princess Kiboro's victory and adventure. This gave such an interesting perspective to the politics and royal family, seeing everything through the eyes of someone most people would have forgotten about. I also very much appreciated the fact that Seyo was a historian, and actually loved her work, as this is often not the case with fantasy characters whose parents brought them up to love certain things.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Eternity Gate! It was a brilliant mix of cultural intricacies, dastardly betrayals, hope breaking through the darkness, all told through the eyes of a handmaiden whose loyalty is unquestionable.

Cws: Death, and the winged creatures that show up later (how they are created, that is).

“The sun surrenders to night. Sometimes the moon disappears. Yet through the stars, the Father of Light still shines, and the greatest darkness cannot defeat them."

Full of grief and loss yet great light and hope, The Eternity Gate doesn’t feel at all like a debut. It’s unputdownable, richly built, and populated with dynamic, sympathetic characters. And as I was racing to finish it, glued to the pages, it led me to reflect on the glory and grace of the Father of Light. I loved it.

This is an excellent book that should be of interest to all ages. The character development and story line are well done and kept my interest throughout the book. Katherine Briggs wrote an incredible story that left me wanting more! The story build-up always gave excitement as each new chapter came. The characters are lovable, and I am obsessed with many of them! Seyo’s adventures help her grow into who she is and who she’s meant to be. There are many valuable lessons learned from this incredible story. You WILL NOT BE SORRY if you pick up this book! I already want to read it again! The anticipation for Book 2 is already set in my mind!!

Y’all. WOW. This book takes you on a deep-dive journey into a Korean-inspired high fantasy where divine giftings and feuding kingdoms collide with ironclad ships and railroads, and a (quite literally) fireproof heroine contends with fell enemies and her own weakness to keep a secret and protect her people. Seyo is a strong protagonist with entirely relatable doubts, and I loved the bonds she shares with both her brother and the princess, but Geras will forever hold my heart. His humble spirit, faithfulness, and gentleness in the face of so much opposition and hardship is beautiful, and he needs to be protected.

Themes of loyalty, duty, and worthiness are skillfully woven into the plot and character interactions alongside gripping action, nail-biting tension, and one of the most exciting climaxes. The ending? Delightful. Hold onto your hats, because this is one exciting ride!

I’m sure this is a great book, I’ve seen awesome reviews but I’m having a hard time focusing on the world building due to the names of people and places. They are distracting me from the plot :( I wish this wasn’t the case, but I think I’m going to have to DNF (30%) on this one… maybe try again another day.

From the first page, I was swept into a brilliant world of light and shadow, new cultures and traditions, a new battle between good and evil. Seyo has choices to make, to be responsible to her role and to keep her own secrets safe while she also safeguards the princess, or to go adventuring and discover the secrets of the Eternity Gate. With threats from neighboring kingdoms, dark magic, and the light of faith, Seyo finds new courage as her life takes unexpected twists and turns. All the while, the secrets and the doubts she is keeping closed up inside build and build.
This book has gorgeous world-building, great characters, and a meaningful theme. I highly recommend it to readers of YA fantasy.

Wow! What a beautiful novel. The Eternity Gate is a wild, beautifully crafted adventure. Seyo, our main character, is easy to follow along with as the POV for the story. I found her sympathetic and caring for both her friends and country. Her knowledge of languages and how she used that knowledge to her advantage, especially in the first half, was one of my favorite parts to read.

There were SO many twists and turns, but I was still satisfied at the end. I expected a particular plot point to happen and was worried it wasn't going to go that way for a second. Boy am I glad I kept reading! I was delighted when that point payed off and also surprised when it did so with a twist I didn't see coming. Now, looking back, that twist makes total sense.

If you like adventure novels, treasure hunts, and court intrigue, then this is the book for you!

Can't wait for book two!

Haunting, suspenseful, and full of intrigue, this highly imaginative fantasy will keep you turning pages and stay with you long after you read the last page.

I really enjoyed the atmospheric setting in this suspenseful fantasy. With echoes of a Biblical-scale clash of servants of light battling the corrupted servants of evil, the story was thought provoking as well as entertaining. Some of the haunting scenes reminded me that evil and hardships come to us all, and we have to choose how we will respond. There were times my heart broke and times I cheered.

As far as characters go, my favorite was Geras, and I hope to see more of him and his story in book two!

This book definitely surprised me. But in a perfectly good way! One thing I look for in good fantasy books is the rich world building and The Eternity Gate did not disappoint. So rich and vivid. Deep and intriguing. It left me wanting more and asking so many questions.
I appreciated how it did not shy away from the darkness that we all know is there but showed the light overcoming it and letting us revel in the majesty of the Father of Light. So many things I loved!

The Eternity Gate was pretty much what I expected in the beginning. This is YA fantasy, and the tone struck me as exactly on point of that age range in the early pages. It was slow to start, and I just wasn’t sure that this was going to be the book for me. But then things changed. The plot tightened, the tension was ratcheted up, and the slight whininess of the town vanished under the quicker pace. The characters, the world, and the writing all grew on me. By the time I reached the last third of the book, I couldn’t put The Eternity Gate down.

I really appreciated that this book didn’t feel inspired by medieval Europe in any way. Some of the language, naming conventions, and aspects of the culture in The Eternity Gate felt near-Eastern, which worked well for the story. I was reminded of Avatar: The Last Airbender with the different giftings found among the various people groups.

That leads me into the world building. I found this world absolutely fascinating! There are multiple kingdoms stretched across the continent. One kingdom has a gifting of light, one of fire, one of water, one of earth. An ancient war drove a wedge between the various groups and resulted in a rift between man and the Father of Light. I found the mythos and theology surrounding the Father of Light beautiful. The in-world religion offers some lovely commentary on Christianity while still feeling vibrant and real in its own fictional world. Aside from the expertly crafted religion, I was also impressed with the political machinations as well as the multilayered mystery underpinning the story.

Seyo is our perspective character. She’s handmaiden to the princess of Laijon, and is a gifted translator in training to become a priestess. She also has a lot of secrets. I have to confess that I was annoyed by Seyo for the first portion of the book. She struck me as whiny, and she didn’t make the best of decisions. But she really grew on me by the end of her story. There were other compelling characters here, but my favorite by a mile was Geras. I don’t want to give anything about him away, but I found him fascinating and incredibly sympathetic.

Did I mention the radical improvement in the pacing? The last third or so of the book was insanely propulsive. It was really difficult to put down once I reached a certain point. The story was charged with tension and incredibly high stakes. I found the end very satisfying, while also being immediately compelled to pick up the next book. The Immortal Abyss sounds like a promising finale to this duology.

I will say that there were a couple of writerly choices that weren’t my favorite. Specifically, I found the in-world curse “oh my continent” and “what in the continent” overly cutesy and overused. Another overused term, especially in the first half of the book, was “grimaced.” But these, along with the initial whiny tone of our perspective character, were really my only complaints, and they’re very minor.

If you’re looking for a young adult fantasy with a unique world that’s clean but packed with depth and danger, I recommend The Eternity Gate!

This was super awesome!
But also really really fast, and so much happened, which was confusing at times. Like, every chapter had a whole book finale type scene, even if maybe it wasn’t necessarily.
Feel like it needed at least a little fluff? Not “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” level fluff but SOMETHING, yknow?

anyways it was good! ✨

What a fantastic debut novel from Katherine Briggs! I loved Seyo's first person narrative and her curious, clever, and brave soul that lived for all things history. Her priestess' heart was pure and receptive, which allowed her faith to grow and mature as she sought to find and open the Eternity Gate. Seyo's journey to save her kingdom had tons of action and battle, betrayals at every corner, and surprises at every stage. The plot was complex and deeply layered; the characters were quite wonderful and moving. My favorite character was Geras, who had a painful past but a heart-stirring redemption story and was the epitome of loyalty and selflessness.

It does end on a cliffhanger of sorts and I can't wait for the second book of this duology. Any fantasy fan would thoroughly enjoy this epic adventure of kingdoms at war and race to find and open the ancient relic prophesied to hold power and judgment.

This book reminded me how much fun fantasy can be! I loved the characters (Helloooo, Geras!), and laughed, cringed, cried, grew red with anger, and loved every moment of it. One of my favorite parts while reading this book was that the author kept you on your toes- at first I thought the plot would go one way but the story line delightfully turned and twisted and kept me fully glued to the the page with surprises, plot twists, and cliffhangers all along. I loved the strong, relatable female leads and I cannot wait for book 2 and to see how the rest of the adventure unfolds.

This story pulled me in from the first chapter. The author brings a fresh voice to a YA adventure of monsters, legends and friendship. It builds to an epic conclusion worth the wait. I especially liked Geras’s arc whose journey of healing and hope reminded me of how God often uses the broken to tell His story of redemption.

Briggs blends allegory and fiction into this beautiful tale, giving the reader a satisfying conclusion while also leaving them hanging at another threshold (wink wink) of questions. There were times when I wished the magic was better explained and more relevant to the plot, but even still, it’s clear the author created a dynamic world which we’ve only scratched the surface of. Count me in for book two because I gotta know what happens to Geras and Seyo!

I must say, the writing, cultures, and character in this book were extremely well written. I enjoyed the story, the ties to Christian faith, and especially Geras. I'm excited to read the next book when it comes out.
My only complaint would be that I felt we had very little time to enjoy each of the cultures and people. It felt somewhat rushed, and I feel the story could have been extended in some areas. Other than that, it was a wonderfully written story!
