Arizona, 1938. Teddy loves the Fourth of July the way other kids love Christmas, but he’s tired of being treated like a little kid. Now that he’s nine years old, this middle child yearns for time to himself—time to do the things he likes to do. Things his brothers couldn’t care less about. During his family’s Fourth of July picnic at the Salt River, he slips away unnoticed, to wander and explore the glory of the Sonoran desert. Everything feels magical. . . right up until he realizes that he’s lost. Sizzling under the scorching summer sun, he’s desperate to cool off in the river, but he remembers the rule. . .No swimming in the river without an adult. He’d promised to keep the rule. . .and he knows promises shouldn’t be broken. In a sweaty panic, Teddy hatches a plan that doesn’t break the rule, but “bends” it a bit. When he accidentally plunges into the river, literally “in over his head,” Teddy couldn’t see a way out. Will he find his way back to his family, or will he be swept away? A Boy Who Swam with Angels is a middle grade chapter book. It’s an inspirational, faith-based story about a boy who comes face to face with the consequences of his choices. If you like unexpected heroes, and stories based on true events, you’ll love Teddy’s tale of faith and courage. Simple observations from daily life often reveal the best stories, and Sandra’s always up for a good story. Just like children, it’s hard to pick a “favorite.” All stories--like one’s children, are all different, but are unique in their attraction, meaning or purpose. There’s always something to learn. Anywhere. Her love of writing has deep roots--50 years of journals or as she likes to look at it, 50 years of stories. These days, she enjoys turning simple, daily observations into stories for her grandchildren. Hanging out with them and her four grown-up kids feels as comfortable as an afternoon on the warmest, most pristine beach.

Sweet story of a young boy who gets lost in the AZ desert and falls into a river. (Being a native of Arizona, I enjoyed hearing about places and scenes I know so well). Teddy's bravery and listening to promptings help him survive. I got a little teary eyed as Teddy talked to his mom at the end. Enjoyed the story and am having my 8 yo son read it as well.
