Vexing Villains #2

A Hero in Hiding

Rate this book
My days are filled with perusing August’s sexy body, reading, and petting my villain cat.

Or they should be.

Of course I can’t just kick back and let the world burn around me because August “cares” about people and while I really… don’t, the idea of my one true love waltzing off into danger has me chasing after him, flinging bad guys as far as I can with my telekinesis.

This sounds easy enough—I can fling people in my sleep—until someone uses an illusion to make me believe the worst. I might be one of the most powerful supers alive, but when it’s impossible to tell what’s real and what’s not, lines begin to blur.
Along with my band of… misfits (I’m trying to be nice here), including a firestarter who seems to excel at burning the clothes off others (I’m never going to complain about a naked August), an excitable assassin who really needs to start asking before he shoots, and an illusionist who is disgustingly normal, we’re going to save the world.

I’m joking; I don’t care about saving the world. I just want to make sure no one touches my man.

OMG OMG OMG, A SEQUEL!! 😍
It’s only been a month since I read A Villain for Christmas and was so disappointed that Alice Winters never wrote a second book to that one. And like she heard me, here it comes *lmfaooo

We even got a new cover for the first one (the old one was ugly as heck!!)

I CAN’T WAIT. Okay, honestly, I hoped for a new couple from all the intriguing characters we met in book 1 but it’s going to be Landon and August again. Could be worse, I guess.

And I hope (fingers crossed hard!!!) that we get an audio for that one soon as well!

I much preferred this to the first book. I still think Landon and August are just a supernatural version of Felix and Lane from the In Darkness series though!

I'm desperate for more Ellison and Deus though, I want a whole series for them. I think Deus is pretty much my favourite character of this series! The short of An Illusion In Hiding was so good, but I just need more of this pair.

I still want Nolan and Lex's story too though...

I still hope there will be Nolan and Lex book, but now I also need Deus and Ellison.
August and Landon together were even better than in the 1st book.
The book is super funny but low on steam

Oh I literally savored this one.

This was the book I read in small batches when I needed a break from the more angsty book I was reading.

Spoilers ahead

Ok, so in book 2, we pick up the story as Landon and August are shacking up together and doing interviews to get everyone in the city to understand that even though Landon is not a "hero", he is also not a "villain" either. He is literally someone who wants to sit and read. I have never loved a MC more than this book loving antipeople MC. He also wants August to love books as well.

When I met August, he only read a little, so I’ve been trying to show him the wonders of books by buying him every book he even feigns interest in. At the speed he’s reading them, he’ll be done with the stack by the time he’s a hundred and fifteen.

Anyways, we meet more superheroes and they become a found family. We met Lex the fire dude and Landon's brothers, Nolan and Brandon (mindreading and invincibility, respectively) in the last book, in this one we have Ellison, a hot dude who always wears a suit with the power to create clones of himself and Deus, who was raised to be a demon worshipping killer, who can turn invisible. Also the evil bunch run by Landon's parents are cool people and also are part of this family.

For future me, I am certain that Nolan and Lex will become an item and Deus and Ellison. Or maybe it will be a mmmm. I would be happy with either.

Anyways, August has a hit out on him and that's how the meet Deus. Come to find out that the big bad guys are not really bad at all but there is a super that is so strong that the other supers just let him be. But not Landon. He was able to take him down. As any antihero would do.

I enjoyed this, especially when the book got shot. I snorted so loud the people around me noticed.

A Hero in Hiding is the second book in Alice Winters’ Vexing Villains series. The first book, A Villain for Christmas, was originally published as part of the multi-author Snow Globe Christmas series, but has now been re-covered and re-released to start this new series. The books follow the same main characters in Landon and August, so it is helpful to start with book one so you see the beginning of their relationship, as well as get some background on the world building. I am a huge superhero fan, so I love this series and think Winters does an amazing job with this trope. The world building is fun and clever. I love the play on heroes and villains, the idea that it is not all so perfectly black and white. We get some fun super abilities, interesting political dynamics, and just an overall engaging set up for the series.

Alice Winters does it again. This book was so good. The humor was on point, the action and adventure was perfect, the side characters were some of my favorites (Brandon is always a delight, the addition of Deus and Ellison was great, and getting to see more Lex was fun) and the writing in this one was much more flushed out than the first one. I really want the next book to be about Deus and Ellison, or Lex and Nolan. I really hope it’s not the end for this series!

Oh and this was my 500th book this year! So glad it was this one!

A Villain for Christmas was an unexpectedly fun story. There is more of the same here, but there was just a bit too much of some things. I get that it's Alice Winters' style, but for me, the banter becomes exhausting at times. It's unrelenting in this book and I wanted just a bit more of August and Landon being sweet together. For this reason, it took me longer than expected to read, because I just needed a break.

I loved seeing August standing up for himself here, an update on Nolan, and Landon's soft spot extending to Deus, a fantastic addition to the team who needs to be cuddled hard (hopefully the mysterious Ellison, another newbie, is just the man to do it in the next installment). The plot, at times, felt secondary to the shenanigans and a lot is thrown at us in the end to flesh it out and tie it up.

If you love this author, you will love this book. It's another zany romp with heroes, villains and those who don't want to be either and wish they could just be at home reading their book. A bit unevenly paced and too much bantering, for me, but still enjoyable.

Utterly fabulous second entry

I didn't think it could get any crazier than book one but then I read this second instalment of Alice's Vexing Villains.

August and Landon are happily cohabiting when we pick up this tale and our unapologetic non-hero has been getting lessons from Valerie on how to not be a villain.

It's just as funny as the first one, but also carries a deeper message about the destructive power of guilt.

The gang expands even more here too and even Landon's villainous family get involved in what might be, possibly look a bit like - heroic deeds!

It's absolute genius.

When Alice announced we were getting a second book in this crazy universe I was pumped! A Villian for Christmas is one of my favorite Alice books because of the outright hilarity of it all. I mean the city's beloved superhero falling in love with a supervillain. One who comes with the most insane family I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. The fact that we get some SAVCGEM moments in this book was also a real treat. I never know what those crazies are going to think up next. And the supervillain names! I died!

I love that Landon and August are still going strong. They may not be a normal couple, no matter what they think, but what they do have works for them. I never doubt that if one needs the other, whoever it is would move heaven and earth to be there for the other. AND WE GET AUGUSTS POV!!!!! This made me incredibly happy since we only got to be inside Landon's head in book 1. In addition to Lex, Landon and August have added two more supers to their merry band of somethings. Deus is quite the character. I don't even have words to describe him, and it was also apparent neither did our MCs.

“This is Deus. He’s our…” I glance at August, not exactly positive what he is.

“Entertainment,” August decides on.

“Yes, entertainment.”

The biggest surprise was the addition of Ellison to their friend group. I did NOT see that coming. Neither did I see coming what I hope is going to be a future book couple either. I mean I've already been chomping at the bit for Lex and Nolan. Now I have two couples I need Alice to write. This series is just so much fun. I swear Landon and I would make great friends. I hope to see more books in this world to come!

I absolutely adored this book!! I missed Landon and August so much and here we get to see both of their POVs, what's going on in their heads, all the feelings, the new friends (the new wild friends), frustration, love, weird family, Princess Balzac with her beautiful clothes, new villain, danger, action, laughs and just Landon and August being in love!

We get introduced to two new characters that I already love with all my heart, and they're getting a short story that I can't wait to read. Everyone's interaction and banter was, as usual, top notch in typical Alice Winters style. Love it so much. I laughed so much. Also Landon and books? Extremely relatable.

While humour is always sort of front and centre in Alice's books, there's always also time for different themes. Sometimes when things are not good and you can do something about it, you explode and get angry and frustrated and maybe that way people in power positions can finally see and learn. I loved that in the book, got frustrated alongside the characters and wanted to scream, too!

I honestly could've read a million pages of them going to the zoo and the pool and never get bored.

There's definitely room for more. Maybe books from other characters POV? There's potential, and I'll be here trembling in anticipation!

A Hero in Hiding is the sequel to A Villain for Christmas, and that one absolutely needs to be read first for context.

Landon and August have been together for months at the start of this book. They live together, and Landon encourages August to value himself above being a hero. Landon is grudgingly a hero now, too. Though only for August and there are plenty of laughs to be had as they navigate that.

I honestly thought that a sequel wouldn't be on the cards for this, but I'm so glad to have more of these characters as well as new ones.

There's a little more of a serious tone in this one, not only because Landon and August aren't trying to impress each other now they are in love, and Landon's villain family play less of a part. The story also asks the important question about how heroes should function as a part of law enforcement. A lot of the situations that August had to handle, really should have just been emergency services roles.

Love Deus! So fun! He brings a lot of the comedic relief. He and Leland would be hilarious together.

I friggin' love this series-- also love that we have finally gotten more of it!!! More amazing side characters, a weird friend group coming together. This is going on my "buy soon" list so I can re-read it as much as I read the first one ^_^.

As funny as this book is, there are actual questions and serious plot points or background stuff going on. The relationship between August and Landon is ridiculous, but also so loving.

Seriously, I'm so excited we are getting more of these and I cannot see what will happen next or which couple will be featured. While I do want to see these other potential ones get together, Landon and August are so precious I could read tons of books from their POV without getting bored.

Good book! While some of the humor was lame/unnecessary, there were a lot of laugh out loud moments!! it has been years since I laughed so hard with a book - some of the comedic mental visual images this author created through her writing were so funny and original.

Crazy entertaining, barely a romance, and at this point I wish Alice Winters would have someone else write her sex scenes.

I know this is a sequel and therefore an already established couple, but I did wish for more romance. However, as a story, it was crazy fun, crazy hilarious, and crazy heartwarming. Just a great time all around :)

I am starting to cringe at this author’s sex scenes though, as she tries to put too much banter and humour into them and for once I’d just like them to be romantic or hot AF.

Absolutely brilliant!

It’s so wonderful to be back in the world of villains and superheroes and discovering, once again, what trouble Landon and August find themselves in. Naturally characters from the first book are there and there’s some wonderful new side characters introduced. Landon and August are still madly in love with each other and Landon still madly loves his books. He also still as little interest in saving the world or anyone else unless it’s August in trouble. So when a foe from the past returns Landon, August and friends come together to right a wrong from the past and have a final battle with the foe.

I laughed so much throughout the book and used the highlight function too many times to mention.
There’s a unique interpretation of sign language, Landon’s family up to their usual antics, use of the words moist and Moistman and an unforgettable man named Deus.

The intriguing plot captured me for start to end and this became a one sitting read. With a perfect balance of wonderful characters, action, romance and intrigue this is a fantastic instalment in the Vexing Villains series. I would also advise reading the first book in the series prior to reading this.

Perfectly & heroically villainous

Villains have all the fun! Praise be the… I really wanna share but I can’t so I’ll substitute the writing of Alice Winters and the hilarious world of Vexing Villains. I flove everything about it; Landon and August’s relationship, their friends who I’m really hoping we’ll see again and again, the ridiculous but oddly accurate names, the fantastic world-building, every single part of this book and series delights and tickles me.

“Honestly… I don’t know if I’m a hero or a villain… I don’t know if I want to be either or neither or both. What I do know is that my place is right by August’s side and no matter what gets thrown our way, I will be whatever he needs me to be in the moment.
Because really… is there much difference between a hero or a villain when you’re protecting the one you love?”

Gah, these two. They’re either making me swoon with the love they have for one another, fall over laughing from their ridiculously perfect antics, or gasp out loud because the scrapes they find themselves in are both outrageous and outrageously memorable. Talk about lucky, my life is all the richer for knowing these characters and I’ll leave you with two words until we see them again: Suit Dreams.

“…is there much difference between a hero or a villain when you’re protecting the one you love? The lines happen to get blurred.”

‘A Hero in Hiding’ is a much awaited follow up to ‘A Villain for Christmas’ which Alice Winters first published as part of a multi author series. I made the mistake of sleeping on it and I immediately saw the error of my ways within the first chapter. ‘A Hero in Hiding’ shows Landon, August and Zacia are a very happy little family still going strong about six months after the events at the end of book 1.

Valerie is still absolutely hilarious in her attempts to convince August to leave Landon despite the fact you know she (very) secretly loves him. The edition of a few new characters, most especially Deus, was very well done. He was absolutely hilarious and I kept shaking my head at some of the stuff that came out of his mouth. I am excited to see more of him (and Ellison) as the series goes on. SAVCGEM are still going strong and the cheer of “To the SUV!” is something that will have me giggling everytime I read/hear it until the end of time. August, Landon, Zacia and their odd little band of friends are investigating an unknown Super who is determined to take Super Heroes United down when all poor Landon wants to do is sit at home and read his books.

Let the shenanigans commence!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I absolutely loved A Villain for Christmas and was extremely excited when Alice Winters announced she was making it a series. Landon and August are amazing and I love them so much! And we can’t forget Zacia the cat either. Landon is slowly getting August to realize that he can be more himself and less what the public wants him to be. Landon is even questioning why he has to act so perfect in public all the time. It is hard to “be on” all the time, especially when people are so quick to turn on you. This story was the perfect follow up! Nobody said heroes were perfect but what happens when the public expects them to be? What is the difference between a hero and a villain? Where are all of these assassins coming from? And the most pressing question of all…why will no one leave Landon alone to read?! There are also some great new characters! Deus is almost as crazy as Landon’s family!!!!

Fantastic!

I loved absolutely everything about this book! It was simply glorious being back with Landon and August again, not to mention some favorites from book 1 and a few new friends that were just amazing! I was laughing from page 1 as I was immediately sucked back into this world of supers and villians and their crazy antics. We get a new threat in book 2 and get to watch the whole gang work together to stop it. We get action, so much humor, Landon and August's lovely romance, which is as strong as ever, and a group of family and friends that are just wonderful. I loved every minute of this book and never wanted it to end. I hope there is more to come from them in the future!

A Hero in Hiding is the second book in the Vexing Villains series. I seriously loved A Villain for Christmas and was so excited for this one. August and Landon were just so much fun to read! Will Landon ever get to read?? August is sweet and swoon worthy! Crazy characters, outrageous humor and an exciting story kept me solely engaged in the story. Overall, a fantastic addition to the series!! Well written, the pacing sucked me right into the story!

I love this set of books. I laughed out loud and annoyed my husband by reading the more clever excerpts as I ran into them. I enjoyed these so much I bough physical copies to have in my home library. The second book is less funny than the first but introduces new characters that are surprisingly amusing and touching. I truly hope there is a third book coming because I am hooked.

Their back!

Landon is back to his shenanigans in ever so slowly corrupting August and the rest of the Heroes United team to his 'vilanous' ways. With a newcomer assassin Deus who is right on the edge of helpful or scary not sure which honestly and Ellisoj who is vharge of controlling the misfits the chaos just hits a whole new level. A great follow up story to the original.
