Whew.

Took me almost a month, but enjoyed this overview of mythology, Arthurian, and Charlemagne legends. My son and I've always been interested in all three and this filled in the gaps of knowledge I had - to bring it all together.

I listened to an audiobook of each of the three sections, in tandem of reading from the gorgeous B&N collectible of my late son's collection. I could imagine his smile of approval and happiness from heaven. 💙

Very well done. But also very thorough, long, and wordy for those who aren't as obsessive. 🤣

A Little Ho-Hum

When a self-publisher or traditional publisher puts out a work in the public domain, such as Bulfinch's Mythology, the only things that distinguish published editions are elements like the cover, introductory material, headnotes or footnotes, interior illustrations, and perhaps formatting. If you are already familiar with Bulfinch’s Mythology, you'll be happy to hear his three major works are included here: The Age of Fable (mostly the Greeks but a little of other cultures as well), The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne. The cover is okay, but nothing great. The three images don't really go together. The publisher provides a brief introductory essay that shares a bit about Mr. Bulfinch's life and a little about the books to come--the extent, as far as I can tell, of the “annotation” mentioned in the title. This section is a little scattered and could have been written more concisely and clearly. The book has no headnotes or footnotes offering further analysis of the works, chapters, or stories. The ARC copy I received had no additional illustrations within the book. Since I have found the major component that separates this from other published versions of Bulfinch's Mythology rather lackluster, I don't see why there's any reason to recommend this publisher's version over others I've seen online.

I received a free copy this book, but that did not affect my review.

"Thomas Bulfinch (1796– 1867) is best known for his book "Bulfinch's Mythology,"

Bulfinch's Mythology is a genuine classic. It's from 1855, which is to say it doesn't read like your typical modern page turner, and expecting it to is unfair.

That being said, this is an incredibly reference book on Gods, Goddesses... Mythology as it is named... when I first picked up this edition (I had a trusty paperback edition in college) I turned to the lore of King Arthur. Before I knew it I'd spent over an hour pouring through the pages, simply entranced... The Mythical History of England was a section that I didn't recall reading years ago, or perhaps I am simply licking up on different things now -- which is what I've always loved about Bulfinch's, it contains so much information that different things will be of use each time you "crack it open".

The writing style tends towards some really long paragraphs, and I find it is best used more like an encyclopedia vs. being read cover to cover. With that in mind, this is a nice ebook edition.

From the "The Mythical History of England" section:

"Another story is that Histion, the son of Japhet, the son of Noah, had four sons,– Francus, Romanus, Alemannus , and Britto, from whom descended the French, Roman, German, and British people.".

I was gifted with a copy of Bulging his Mythology Complete Edition and chose to share my thoughts.
