La caractéristique du monde de Troy est de donner à chaque être un pouvoir magique, quel qu'il soit, grand ou petit, parfois quelque peu incongru. Dans un fonctionnement proche du jeu de rôles, les personnages se meuvent en fonction de ce pouvoir et font avancer l'action avec un sens très réussi de la psychologie. Lanfeust le puceau est flanqué de deux créatures pulpeuses. L'une guérit les plaies à la tombée du jour, elle est sa promise ; l'autre transforme en glace tout ce qu'elle veut, si elle le veut. Elle glace surtout Lanfeust avec son tempérament de feu. Entre les deux, l'ingénu balance et la fin du cycle le verra accéder à la quête suprême, si elle n'est ultime : la découverte de l'amour.

Entre-temps, le lecteur aura découvert Hébus, un Troll fort en gueule et fort tout court qui vous transforme une armée en pilons de volaille, ponctuant de jurons bruxellois un carnage perpétré avec une joie carnassière ; Thanos, le double maléfique de Lanfeust susceptible lui-même d'accéder au pouvoir absolu et capable, car tel est son pouvoir, d'aller à volonté d'un point à l'autre de l'univers connu ; le brave chevalier Or-Azur dont le bon sang ne ment pas ; Maître Nicolède enfin, un sage débonnaire, accessoirement père des deux soupirantes du héros-titre...

Finalement, avec ses personnages familiers très bien typés, il y a du Astérix dans cette saga d'héroïc-fantasy unique et drôle. Il n'est pas impossible que, vu la tournure que prend la série, Lanfeust prenne la place du Gaulois auprès des générations de demain. --Didier Pasamonik

Had a real blast reading first cycle of Lanfeust's adventures. Just one of best adult high fantasy comics series ever.

Review of Danish version.

This one was definitely an improvement storywise, but also characterwise. Like in volume 3 there's some actual story and action. There's also a fair deal of gore (lost limbs and blood) so if that's not your thing I'd avoid Zanfyst.
It's also the first volume where Cixi doesn't sexually harrass or assault Zanfyst, so also a definitive improvement.
The story itself is divided into two parts; a travel part and a confrontation part, so to speak. Questions from volume 3 are also answered. And of course, they keep enough open to continue the series though this one does come to a close and can be used as an ending.
I honestly like the mid-series ending, knowing a new arc will start next volume and then run through another four volumes. I hope the rest will not regress to the standard of the beginning of this series, but keep to what is seen in this and volume 3.

For the first time, the series is beginning to drag. Many pages are spent on a dull misadventure involving a maritime wedding. If the author couldn’t come up with something more interesting, it would have been better to summarize; not everything should be dramatized.

The anticipated confrontation between Thanos and Lanfeust arrives — they battle twice actually. The first battle is decent, and has a clever resolution. Lanfeust uses his power to melt flung coins, turning them into deadly projectiles. The decisive second battle is underwhelming, lacking the requisite epic spectacle. In a bad deus ex machina, Lanfeust is saved by a flying dragon from Eckmuhl.

Very little world building of interest in this volume either, other than some frogs that power the paddlewheel of a riverboat.

Lu en audiolib, très immersif même si je préfère avoir les images sur une BD d'habitude. Très reussi. Lu en 2023
