I bought this book at Causeway Bay Books in Taipei a couple years ago, and now having finished reading it, I find that quite fitting. The author's interplay between family, generational divides, and the city of Hong Kong were intricate and added true depth to this work. The bittersweet ending was also fitting, as that's clearly how the author feels about the city she left behind.
Pinned to my couch for the second half of this because the emotional tenor was just unbelievably gripping. I'm always in awe of writers who can portray the sensorial landscape and psychology of childhood authentically, and Chen Hui does not disappoint with the first third of this story. Reading this in February 2025 made me want to see the future a little more.
Brought back so many memories to the emotion in those years. Have to pause from time to time to hold the tears and resettle my emotion while reading. I guessed it spoke to the heart of many Hong Kongers on the unique experiences and trauma we have gone through.
A truly Hong Kong novel Can't imagine it being written better How it captured the important years of HK as a pair of local teens that resonate in all aspects including self, family and society
