This sequel to “Duke Sucks” picks up where the original left off, exploring the latest reasons to despise the Blue Devils. The phony “Brotherhood” slogan, Coach K’s nausea-inducing retirement tour, Grayson freakin’ Allen, the Zion Williamson scandal – the authors dissect it all in a series of irreverent essays, laying waste to Duke and continuing their mission to re-educate anyone who thinks the Blue Devils are what’s great about college basketball.
This one felt darker than the first one and more targeted toward Coach K since his later coaching years held various scandals and sweeping of issues (sexual assaults, poor sportsmanship, financial missteps) under the rug.
Fave quote: “Sports rivalries give a lot of people meaning, and it’s all within a somewhat safe space…It’s stupid really. But it’s also kinda awesome. And we need it. As much as we hate to admit it, we don’t really want Duke to fall off the map and become just another team. You need darkness to discern light. You have to experience evil to appreciate the good.”
This is a must-have and must-read for any Tarr Heel fan! Just like the original, this book is loaded with anecdotes and vignettes as to why people, especially UNC and Kentucky fans, hate Duke! Great job and I can't wait for the third installment.
I still need to read the first volume, but as a relative Tar Heel fan newcomer (2007), I figured this one would cover my era.
And cover it it does, delightfully touching on the many offensive, arrogant, and noxious words and actions from that school down the road. I found myself nodding and saying “Yes!” more often than I can recount here. I would have liked even more coverage of the last two Duke-UNC matches under K. In fact, I’d be happiest with a book devoted to those golden memories.
