Hirayasumi is a wonderful slice of life manga that will definitely appeal to fans of the iyashikei sub-genre. There is a lulling, comforting even, quality to the Shinzo's storytelling, from his characters to his art style. With little preamble the manga explores every-day experiences of its central characters, giving insight into their lives and the characters themselves (what to they believe in? what makes them happy? what are their anxieties? do they desire, from life, from each-other?). Shinzo portrays their routines in such a soothing yet compelling way that I found myself unwilling to interrupt my reading.

Ikuta Hiroto, one of our protagonists, is a self-described freeter who is in his late twenties and leads a content carefree life. He has no interest in having the kind of life that his peers and his society expects of him, and he is satisfied working part-time and drifting along. He eventually inherits a house that belonged to a neighbourhood granny, who he had struck an unlikely friendship with. He is joined by his cousin, 18-year-old Natsumi, an aspiring mangaka, who has moved to Tokyo to attend university.
Natsumi however feels out-of-place in the city, and struggles to make friends.

I cannot praise this manga enough. It was a balm to my soul. I liked everything about it. From Shinzo's reflections on modern work culture, to his exploration of loneliness and hope. There was something so refreshing and nonjudgemental about the way he depicts his characters (their personalities, their struggles) and I found the focus on, often unexpected, friendships to be delightful.

เริ่มอ่านไปด้วยความรู้สึกปรามาสว่ามังงะที่ออกพร้อมกัน 3 เล่มติดนี้จะช่วยเยียวยาใจหรือทำให้เห็นความสุขใต้ฝ่าเท้าได้เหรอ (อ่านคำโปรยหลังปกเล่ม 1 ทำให้คิดแบบนั้น) พออ่านเล่มแรกจบก็ยังเฉยๆ เล่ม 2 ก็ชอบมาขึ้นอีกนิด และพอมาถึงเล่ม 3 ก็ยอมรับว่าชอบมากๆ จนบางทีคิดว่าการอ่านมังงะหรือหนังสือที่มีเล่มต่อก็ไม่ควรไปตัดสินเค้าที่เล่มแรกและตัดจบ

ส่วนตัวเรารู้สึกอินกับตัวฮิโรโตะ ถ้าท้าวความอีกนิดในอดีตฮิโรโตะเข้าโตเกียวมาที่ตจวเพื่อที่จะเป็นนักแสดง และที่จริงด้วยรูปร่างหน้าตาที่ดูดีและความสามารถเค้าก็เป็นได้ แต่ด้วยเหตุผลอย่างการต้องแข่งขัน เปรียบเทียบ ต้องได้รับความนิยมถึงจะได้ไปต่อในสายอาชีพ เขาก็เลยคิดว่าไม่เหมาะกับตัวเองแล้วก็หันมาใช้ชีวิตเรื่อยๆ เป็นฟรีเตอร์ ซึ่งเอาจริงเราพยายามคิดเสมอว่าถ้าเราไม่เปรียบเทียบชีวิตตัวเองกับใคร ชีวิตเราก็เป็นแบบนี้ ก็ดำเนินไปเช่นนี้แหละ แต่แม่งโคตรทำยากเลย

การได้อ่านมังงะเรื่องนี้ เจอฮิโรโตะ และตัวละครอื่นๆ ทำให้เราฉุกคิดอะไรได้หลายๆ อย่าง แล้วก็ปลอบโยนใจเรามากๆ ถ้าใช้เลนส์ความฝันเพียงอย่างเดียวมองตัวละครหลักในเรื่องอย่างฮิโรโตะคือเคยมีความฝัน ทำได้ดี แต่ไม่ชอบก็เลยไม่ทำต่อ นัตสึมิทำได้ดีและสนุกกับการอยากเป็นนักเขียนมังงะ ก็สู้เพื่อฝันต่อ และฮิเดกิเพื่อนสนิทในวัยมัธยมของฮิโรโตะที่ฝันอยากเป็นผู้กำกับหนังแต่ทำไม่ได้เรื่อง ก็เลยใช้ชีวิตในฐานะพนักงานบริษัท เป็นสามี และพ่อของลูก ซึ่งน้ำเสียงในการเล่าไม่ได้เล่าแบบเพราะมึงอกหักทำความฝันไม่ได้ดีเลยต้องล้มเลิกและไปไขว่คว้าสิ่งอื่นหรือใช้ชีวิตแบบขี้แพ้ แต่ให้มุมมองที่เราเป็นผู้ที่เลือกได้ด้วยซ้ำ พออ่านไปก็เออว่ะ ทำไมเราถึงชอบเอาชีวิตไปผูกไว้กับสิ่งๆ เดียว ในเมื่อชีวิตเราเต็มไปด้วยเรื่องราว ความหมายต่างๆ อีกมากมาย การทำสิ่งหนึ่งที่ฝันได้ดี ประสบความสำเร็จ หรือเละไม่เป็นท่า แล้วไงวะ ชีวิตก็ยังต้องดำเนินต่อ มีพาร์ทอื่นให้เราหยิบจับ มีเลนส์อีกมากมายให้เราเลือกมอง และที่สำคัญเรามองประกอบกันเป็นภาพใหญ่ได้

เราชอบที่คนเขียนเค้าเล่าแบบไม่พยายามที่จะดราม่า เพราะองค์ประกอบในเรื่องจริงๆ ทำให้ดราม่า ขยี้ได้ทุกตอนเลย ชอบที่เล่าแบบเรื่อยๆ ไม่ต้องครบวง ไม่ต้องตบปมอะไร แต่ถ้ามีโมเมนต์ในชีวิตให้หวนคิดถึงปมนั้นก็ค่อยเล่า มังงะเล่มนี้เลยเหมือนการฉายชีวิตของเหล่าตัวละครที่มาอยู่ในบ้านหลังน้อยประหนึ่งเรียลลิตี้โชว์ ให้เราได้เป็นผู้สังเกต และคิดตาม อะไรทัชก็ทัช อะไรไม่ทัชก็ทำไม ชีวิตไม่ได้ดำเนินด้วยจังหวะที่ลงตัว ใช่ ครบองค์ ครบวงทุกอย่าง ก็เหมือนมังงะเรื่องนี้ที่เค้าก็เล่าไปเรื่อยๆ จะให้ทัชให้จุกตลอดก็คงไม่อาจเรียกได้ว่า ใช้ชีวิต

ชอบอีกอย่างที่ฮิโรโตะทำให้เราเห็นว่าความเห็นอกเห็นใจมันแบบส่งต่อและมอบให้แก่กันได้จริงๆ เราชอบคนแบบฮิโรโตะมากๆ ในแง่ความอ่อนโยน การไม่ตัดสินคนอื่น และใช้ชีวิตในแบบที่เขาเลือกจะใช้ แล้วพอปฏิสัมพันธ์กับตัวละครอื่นๆ ในบ้านหลังเล็ก มันทำให้ผู้อ่านอย่างเราได้เห็นความยินดีเล็กๆ ที่งดงามเป็นประกายที่ทุกคนก็มี แต่การจะมองเห็นหรือสัมผัสได้มันไม่ใช่มานั่งคิด นั่งเพ่งแล้วจะเจอ แต่มันเป็นไปแบบที่เราใช้ชีวิต ปฏิสัมพันธ์กับผู้คนในจังหวะที่ลื่นไหล แล้วก็สังเกตเห็นโดยไม่คาดคิดมากกว่า นี่ละมั้งที่อาจเรียกได้ว่าความสุขใต้ฝ่าเท้า ที่ผ่านมา 17 ปีก็ยังไม่เห็นเข้าใจหรือรู้สึก ก็คิดเองเออเองนี่แหละว่าที่พิมพ์มาทั้งหมดนี้คงอาจจะเรียกว่า ความสุขใต้ฝ่าเท้า (มั้ง)

'And even though she had felt nothing then...when she saw that same view again today...everything seemed to twinkle just a little bit brighter.'

This is apparently my year of getting into low stakes manga and I'm not complaining. (The other is Mr. Villain's Day Off and perfect if you're into pandas). Hirayasumi was a rec by Maraia and it turned out to be a perfect wholesome read.

If carefree was a person, it would be Hiroto. He's the perfect representation of the word since his only real care in the world is figuring out what is his next meal going to be. (That scene with him going around the supermarket with a cookbook in hand was hilarious LOL). However, he can be quite motivated when times call for it even if his motivation comes from being annoyed at other peoples' insistence on living life in the fast lane, hee.

Although he moved to Tokyo to become an actor, Hiroto literally wandered off the path and somehow found himself content with a part-time job having dinner with a neighborhood granny once every week. One day, things change quite drastically for him but in true Hiroto fashion, he's not really all that fazed. Not sure how I feel about his best friend, Hideki, though.

Natsumi, Hiroto's 18-year-old cousin, ends up moving in with Hiroto when she gets enrolled in university. However, Natsumi is having a hard time adjusting to life in Tokyo and is content to miss classes (after a couple of moments of embarrassing herself) and drawing manga in secret at home (no idea why she'd be embarrassed about it because that's cool as hell but everything in due time, I guess).

I can't wait to see where volume 2 takes Hiroto and Natsumi what with the introductions of Yomogi who seems like the perfect person to maybe shake up Hiroto's world and Natsumi who might have found a friend in Akari.

Hiro is laid back and content to just quietly do his thing and get through life as calmly as possible. When he suddenly inherits a house and then his cousin Natsumi moves in, that might change his life once and for all. Or, you know, it might not.

With the stress and anxiety that is the modern world, it’s kind of a balm for the soul to see somebody as lackadaisical as Hiro, who is probably aware of the challenges that life presents, but isn’t terribly worried about them.

He’s got no plan and his goals are firmly entrenched in his leisure. His best friend is moving on, he works a dead-end job, and can’t talk to women his own age. Nothing about this should actually work as a story or character you’d want to spend any time with.

But, hey, this is an award-winning manga and you can kind of see why. There’s more here than just Hiro’s laissez-faire approach to life and he’s not pushy about what he’s doing. He just has his way and doesn’t see a need to change.

Plus, those real world stresses exist and it’s not like he’s completely immune to them. He just takes them on with a speed that, in this day and age, is actually really enviable. There’s a certain amount of wish fulfillment for the working adult here that I definitely found myself vibing with.

His relationship with Wada, the old woman who leaves him her house, is entirely too sweet. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement and Hiro’s appearance at the hospital when she’s all alone is a very tender moment amidst a lot of silly stuff. She has the best kind of senior citizen energy.

And later on, we see Hiro processing his grief for the first time, which is important in showing that his lifestyle does not define him; he has more to him than being the manga equivalent of Jughead Jones. This story has layers that it chooses the exact right time to reveal, which is part of why it works so well.

The fly in his ointment comes when his cousin Natsumi moves to Tokyo for art school, except the roles of the ointment and the fly are rather reversed. Natsumi is forced to stay with Hiro rather than get her own place, which she doesn’t love.

Which is also ironic because it’s implied that Natsumi is nursing a heck of a crush on her dear distant cousin. Thankfully we seem to be avoiding anything actually actionable; the role of romantic interest appears to have fallen to a far more diametrically opposed character whose impending formal meeting with Hiro after numerous misadventures already sold me the second volume.

But Natsumi has a really great character arc too. She comes to university and struggles to make friends and succumbs to the pressure and anxiety of university life and things get really tough for her at a couple of points. There’s also the reveal that this plan is more adjacent to what she wants to do than anything else.

Other than Hiro’s best friend, who I feel follows a very typical path for such a character, everybody else is vibrant and interesting, even if not always entirely likeable. But there are interesting struggles here - finding yourself lost away from home, the difficulty of making new friends, the inability to take any time to appreciate anything.

And, amidst it all, somebody utterly disconnected from all that. Well, sort of. While he may only have some minimal insight towards himself, Hiro’s not incapable of picking up on the feelings of others and he really comes through for both Natsumi and Wada in interesting ways. How this all plays out is often unique and interesting, which makes it a welcome stand-out.

4 stars - a charming as hell look at a variety of lives, filtered through a lead whose outlook is enviably out of step with everybody else. A real breath of fresh air.

Uno dei manga più rilassanti letti nel corso di quest'anno.
Una storia di quotidianità che proprio serviva in questo panorama di battle e commedie romantiche.

Non sempre bisogna creare chissà che storia per riuscire ad intrattenere e questa serie con questo primo volume ne è l'esempio.

Pochi personaggi ma ben sviluppati, pochi luoghi ma fedeli alla realtà e una storia raccontata a giornate che ti arricchisce con ogni capitolo.

E' quasi impossibile non entrare nella vite e vivere con i protagonisti le loro giornate, e ancor più impossibile è non riuscire a capire le emozioni e le situazioni vissute da loro.
Un manga con cui ci si riesce a relazionare e che ti porta nella vita di un qualsiasi individuo, ed estremamente adattabile alle situazioni vissute da tutti nel quotidiano.

Але навіть із цим знанням я не очікував, що ця історія захопить мене настільки. Вона зачарувала неспішною теплотою, як весняне сонце після дощу, й відкрила зовсім інше обличчя буденності. Те, яке ми зазвичай не помічаємо.

Головний герой — Хірото Ікута, 29 років, хлопець без особливих амбіцій, який якось заблукав у Токіо на шляху до мрії — і залишився. Живе собі спокійно, працює підробітками, товаришує з літньою сусідкою. Після її смерті він несподівано отримує в спадок старенький будиночок. А незабаром до нього приєднується двоюрідна сестра— 18-річна Нацумі, що приїхала до столиці, аби вступити до університету мистецтв.

Хірото — це втілення спокою. Він зупиняється, щоб подивитись на дерево, присісти біля кота, приготувати вечерю за книгою рецептів чи просто пройтись вулицею без мети. У ньому немає поспіху, і це його найбільша сила. Але навіть у його спокої є сум, який проривається у хвилини тиші.

У кожній сторінці — неспішна хода містом, м’яке світло ліхтарів увечері, шелест дерев, крізь які пробивається сонце. Манґа не змушує, не наполягає — вона просто дозволяє бути. Просто бути. Просто жити.

«Хіраясумі» — це історія, яку хочеться читати повільно, в затишку, з чашкою гарячого чаю, і, можливо, з оніґірі поряд. Вона для тих моментів, коли хочеться зупинитись і згадати: життя не завжди про великі перемоги. Часто воно — про маленькі радості. Про людей поруч. Про спокій, якого ми всі так потребуємо. Раджу щиро. І собі, й вам. Обовʼязково перечитуватиму.

Quiet, slow, and sweet with just a hint of sadness, Hirayasumi is the sort of slice-of-life manga that understands the assignment. It explores the very normal lives of Hiroto and his younger cousin Natsumi as they move through their days, Hiroto perfect happy and accepting of where his life is and Natsumi raring to hit all of life's supposed check points. There's a sense of learning to accept and appreciate that makes this feel well-rounded, and even if slice-of-life isn't your genre, this is worth picking up to see things done right.

Ця історія перевершила мої очікування. Чесно кажучи, я трішки сумнівалась, що мене так захопить історія про звичайне життя, буденність, навчання та роботу. Але читала цей том на одному подиху й дуже засмутилась, коли він завершився.

Це дуже класна манґа, яка, я впевнена, відгукнеться багатьом! Адже в ній себе знайдуть і студенти, які перейшли в новий етап життя — пошук нових друзів, облаштування нового помешкання і свого життя на новому місці; і дорослі, які працюють і намагаються будувати своє майбутнє, створювати родини та піклуватися про себе і тих, кого люблять.

Це манґа про наше щоденне життя, про буденні речі й про те, що може за ними ховатися; про наші бажання і наші страхи. Відчувалась вона як тепле какао у холодний осінній день.

29-річний Хірото хотів бути актором, але натомість заробляє підробітками. Він взагалі не вміє спілкуватися із молодими жінками, натомість добре ладнає зі старшими людьми. Так одного дня він знайомиться з бабусею і вони стають хорошими друзями. Після смерті та залишає Хірото свій будинок. Згодом до нього приїжджає двоюрідна 18-річна сестра Нацумі. Вона вступила в університет і тепер герої будуть жити разом.

Цікаво, що у цій історії за буденним захована і тема про пошук себе і бажання іти за своєю мрією. Наші герої мають те, чим горять і в чому хотіли б розвиватися. Але через певні страхи, вони відмовляються від цього або соромляться. Це дуже часто буває і в реальному ж��тті. І щоб зрозуміти, що ми хочемо і ким ми хочемо бути — потрібен час і не обовʼязково досягати своїх мрій в 18,20,25,30+ років. На все свій час.

У цій історії дуже класно змальований побут героїв — те, як Хірото обирає, що готувати, як Нацумі не любить поратися по будинку, як вони разом їдять, переглядають фільми, чи дбають про будинок. Дуже затишними є і прогулянки героїв, спілкування з друзями — тобто все те, що і кожен із нас проживає. Здається, це звичайна манґа про звичайне, але чимось вона таки чіпляє.

У цій історії розкриваються важливі теми — прийняття себе, пошук друзів, любов до близьких. Із цією манґою вдасться сповільнитися, адже скажіть, життя зараз таке швидке?

Une “tranche de vie”, c’est l’expression qui est le plus souvent utilisée pour parler de cette série. Un jeune homme (29 ans), nouveau propriétaire d’une petite maison à Tokyo va accueillir sa jeune cousine (18 ans) qui débute ses études supérieures dans cette immense métropole. Le ressort de la série tient à l’opposition des caractères de ces deux personnages. Lui est un dilettante qui profite de la vie, se contente de peu et apprécie les plaisirs simples. Elle est travailleuse – peut-être ambitieuse – et surtout anxieuse.

Suivre leur vie quotidienne est un véritable plaisir fait de moments simples tels que des repas, mais aussi de rencontres amicales ou amoureuses. Les dessins de très grande qualité – et l’édition d’un format confortable proposée par Le Lézard noir – sont pour beaucoup dans le plaisir de lecture. Je vais me procurer la suite de toute urgence.

encantoume. non quería outra cousa nestes momentos. o seu optimismo e viveza non se senten impostados, non é unha especie de paulocoelhismo, senón que derivan da intimidade e a beleza que se atopa entre as decepcións, a tristeza e a perda de soños da vida do extrarradio de Tokyo. un cariño tan intenso como aceptado, tratado como ordinario, que existe na mera convivencia. unha tensión que se produce entre certas ambicións frustradas —ser artista, ser actor— e ir atopando noutros aspectos inesperados da vida o que pensabas que eses éxitos te ían traer. nunca é solemne, resulta ata infantil da mellor maneira posible e, nesa amabilidade amarga, atopa un impulso de vivir contaxioso.

Le premier manga de mon nouveau fonds manga a la médiathèque youhouhouuuuu 🥳🥳
J’ai adoré, c’est vraiment la définition même du manga « slice of life » c’est si paisible et en même temps on se prend d’affection pour les perso. C’est pas une histoire qui est particulièrement exceptionnelle, on suit juste 2 persos un peu perdus mais avec 2 caractères complètement opposés et ça aborde quand même des petits sujets intéressants

Oh my god, I loved this so much. I read this exactly when I needed to. It is such a beautiful story about found family, compassion, and kindness. What does Keigo Shinzō put in their manga? I have adored both their works so far this one and Tokyo Alien Bros, Vol. 1. They are the perfect mix of light hearted and deeply moving. This one doesn't have the sci-fi elements but the characters are all so likable and relatable. This one has stolen my heart.

J'ai lu le tome 1 chez Lézard noir (dont je ne trouve pas la fiche sur Goodreads), et je conseille vivement ce manga! Quel bonheur de lecture! Le mangaka a réalisé une longue entrevue (sur yahoo.co.jp) où il raconte avoir reçu un diagnostic de cancer en mars 2020. Cela l'a obligé à mettre sur pause le manga qu'il dessinait alors. Sa longue hospitalisation lui a fait réaliser qu'il y avait un vrai bonheur à être tout simplement en vie, à pouvoir se promener dehors. Il voulait "dessiner le bonheur de vivre une vie normale". De là est né Hirayasumi ("hiraya" signifiant "maison de plain-pied", et "yasumi" plutôt "repos, vacances") en 2021.

Maintenant, le mangaka se lève à 8h, déjeune, il ramasse la maison, commence à dessiner à 10h... Il mange, fais des courses, dessine l'après-midi, puis il prend le temps de manger le soir, il s'offre le droit de choisir le bain plutôt que la douche et il ne retourne pas travailler en soirée! Il prend même parfois... des congés! Rien ne semble extraordinaire quand j'expose cela en français et pourtant, c'est révolutionnaire pour un mangaka! Il dit avoir réalisé qu'il était possible de travailler fort, tout en prenant des congés, en ayant une vie. Et aussi qu'il était normal de faire des erreurs, l'important étant de tenter de faire mieux la prochaine fois...

Eh bien son manga reflète cette ambiance de vie bonne, équilibrée. Le héros, ce cher Hiroto, est un Alexandre le bienheureux du 21e siècle. Il n'est pas idiot, il a ses propres enjeux de communication, ses opinions tranchées. Mais son existence contribue à changer la vie de son entourage, j'aime beaucoup sa relation avec la vieille dame; puis ses discussions avec sa cousine, comme celle-ci (pp.107-108):

Natsumi: Il n'y a jamais rien qui te tracasse, toi?
Hiroto: Non, pas vraiment.
Natsumi (à elle-même): "Sérieux? Ça existe des gens comme ça?"
Hiroto continue: Ruminer, ça ne fait pas avancer les choses. Note que, souvent, je cogite dur pour le dîner! Mais j'agis!

J'ai eu l'impression que Hiroto suivait à la lettre les conseils de la spécialiste du stress, Sonia Lupien! Ah ah ah!

Bref, quel magnifique manga, avec de beaux personnages, quelle belle leçon de vie. J'ai tellement aimé ça que j'ai commandé tous les autres en version japonaise, trop impatiente de les lire!

Every once in awhile a slice of life book comes into my life and hits all the notes. Hirayasumi is that book.

This is about a 29 year old guy named Hiroto. A older lady befriends him, and then soon she passes away (not spoiler, happens in the first few pages) and he takes over the home. He's still trying to figure out life but no girlfriend, no full time job, no real direction for a future Hiroto is just trying to life his life the way he sees fit. Being laid back and enjoying it.

Soon his little cousin, Natsumi, comes to live with him. She's 18 and she's heading to college, and trying to figure out her life. Worrying a ton about her future, her idea of living life is very different than Hiroto.

And I think this manga exploring everyday life of two different people on this journey through life and tribulations is real touching and well done. No major events happen, no big dramatic storyline, just life, and sometimes that's the most intriguing part of a book for me.

I can't wait for volume 2.

Went into this not knowing what to expect and it was a nice surprise!

I loved Hiroto's relationship with granny and was so sad when she passed and left him the house. On one hand, she's taking care of him even in the afterlife but seeing him remember her in pockets of the house almost made me tear up. Grannys (even the ones who didn't birth you) are the best.

He's a very interesting character with a background as an actor and a "different" way of looking at life. In come his niece who is also as complex character and their interactions are so cute. He's taking care of her just like how granny took care of him. I'm intrigued and excited to see where this series go.
