A Rabbit Called Clover

Rate this book
Jasmine's dad is a farmer, and her mum is a vet, so Jasmine spends a lot of time caring for animals and keeping them out of trouble. Unfortunately, this often means she gets into hot water herself... It's not easy rescuing two frightened pet rabbits, but once they're safe on the farm, Jasmine only has to find their owner. But Clover is an expert at escaping and soon she's on the loose again. Can Jasmine track her down before she runs into trouble she can't escape?

Helen Peters is the author of The Secret Hen House Theatre. She grew up on an old-fashioned farm in Sussex, surrounded by family, animals and mud. She spent most of her childhood reading stories and putting on plays in a tumbledown shed that she and her friends turned into a theatre. After university, she realised that she needed to find a job where someone would pay her to read stories and put on plays (though maybe not in a tumbledown shed) and so she became an English and Drama teacher. Several years later, finding herself as a stay-at-home mother of two, she decided to have a go at writing the sort of book she’d so enjoyed as a child. Helen lives with her husband and children in London, and she can still hardly believe that she now gets to call herself a writer.

At the nearby park with her siblings, Jasmine spotted a rabbit, which was obviously a pet. She knew she had to catch it, the foxes lived in the area as well as other predators. But the brown and white rabbit (which Jasmine named Clover) disappeared quickly into the bush. When her brother discovered a black and white rabbit (which she named Dandelion), Jasmine contacted her best friend Tom, who arrived with a special cage to put the rabbits in. Would they be able to catch the two rabbits? And could she discover who owned them?

A Rabbit Called Clover is a sweet little children's story by Helen Peters which I enjoyed. Jasmine is a caring, kind young person, living on a farm with her parents - dad a farmer, mum a vet - and owned lots of animals, as well as cared for different animals when people went on holidays. She and Tom made a great team, as they both worked out what to do with each breed. Recommended.

I love that Jasmine & Tom intend to have an animal shelter when they grow up, & to prepare for that they already rescue, adopt, foster & board all sorts of animals already. Way to go, kids! With a farm, a farmer father & a veterinarian mother, Jasmine seems to be uniquely placed to practice for her future.

The young duo rescue a couple of escape-artist rabbits that Jasmine calls Clover & Dandelion, although, when they discover the true owners, they find they are actually a pair of rascals named Bonnie & Clyde. A sweet story. 3.5★
