MESSENGER FROM THE OTHER SIDE...A PLACE YOU CALL HEAVEN...A PLACE SHE CALLS HOME
Seifulala Adnohrijah Kaya (formerly known as Rhonda Baker Gibson) has dealt with excruciating pain, debilitating illness, grief - and still meets the challenges of the world on a daily basis.
From her childhood diagnosis of muscular dystrophy up until the terrible automobile accident that killed her husband and nearly claimed her own life, Kaya's indomitable spirit has always carried her through.
But it was the near-death experience of the car crash which forever transformed Kaya. It was then that she crossed over to the "other side". There she learned what few others have, and in so doing the Creator sent her back with a message of hope and salvation for the rest of humankind.

I don't even know where to begin. I picked this book up on a whim and I literally could not put it down. Kaya's story punched me right in the chest from the very first chapter. Losing her mother at six years old and then having to watch them close the casket... I ugly cried. Like full on sobbing. This woman has been through things most of us can't even imagine and she still came out with so much love in her heart. If you're looking for a book that will make you feel something real, THIS IS IT.
Reggie. Oh my God, Reggie. The love story in this book destroyed me in the best possible way. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with a person I've never met but here we are. The way he walked through a snowstorm just to give her one kiss and then walked back home?? The poem he wrote for their anniversary?? I need everyone to read this book just so we can all talk about how beautiful their relationship was. And then losing him the way she did... I had to close the book and just breathe for a minute.
I've read a lot of spiritual memoirs but nothing quite like this. Kaya doesn't just talk about faith she LIVES it on every page. The way she described hearing God's voice, the visions, the moments of divine clarity it didn't feel performative or preachy. It felt raw and real. I found myself highlighting so many passages. This book genuinely shifted something inside me. I finished it at 2am and just sat in the dark thinking for a long time.
As someone who has lived with chronic pain my whole life, reading Kaya's story felt like finally being seen. The doctors who dismissed her, the physical therapist who hurt her, the surgeon who wanted to amputate perfectly feeling legs I've had versions of those conversations. And yet she fought. She went to prom, she got her degree, she walked across that stage. I cried reading this not from sadness but from recognition. This is representation that actually matters.
As a mother, the opening chapters broke me. Kaya describes her three memories of her mother with such precision and tenderness the blue skirt with red roses, the hairbrushing, the funeral and I felt every single one. But what really got me was when she talked about the children of the world and the responsibility we have when we bring life here. It made me hug my kids tighter that night. This book has a way of quietly rearranging your priorities.
