A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again.
After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without.
In book 23 in the series, Lonnie helps Jeremy convert the carriage house into a home as important life changes loom on the horizon. Meanwhile, Velma works with Lou on a solution to her own situation, and a whole new group of guests, each with their own life situation to figure out, check in at the inn.
Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home. Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

I think it´s the first time I have read a series with 23 books (and I can´t wait for the next one). My first thought was that I would give up until I read book six, maybe because the story gets boring. Anyway, surprisingly each book gets better than the previous one and the stories are amazing, as well as the characters. I am so addicted to these books that I don´t know how to survive without them. For the last few months, I have been busy reading them and there are no words to explain how well-written they are. Kathi Daley is an incredible author and I truly recommend this series. A must-read.
Clue in the Carriage House is the twenty-third book in Kathi Daley’s heartwarming Inn at Holiday Bay series. The well-plotted storyline flows smoothly, and multiple twists and red herrings in the complex mystery keep the reader engaged. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are three-dimensional, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.
After losing her husband and their infant son in a tragic accident, Abby Sullivan bought a huge old house in the charming town of Holiday Bay, Maine, without even seeing it. Once the house was renovated, she opened the Inn at Holiday Bay and found a home and a family. Georgia Carter, who has also overcome obstacles in her life, is the inn’s talented cook/baker and manager and stars in a cable cooking show once a month. Georgia and her boyfriend, Tanner Peyton, are going through a rough spell, so she and her Newfoundland dog, Ramos, moved back into the cottage with Abby, her Maine Coon, Rufus, and her terrier mix, Molly. Jeremy Slater, who lives in the inn’s basement apartment with his young niece, Annabelle, and his girlfriend, Mylie Sanders, is a valuable asset who helps with the inn’s day-to-day operations. Jeremy and Mylie are renovating the carriage house and are planning their wedding.
Colt Wilder is looking forward to the arrival of two new and hopefully permanent employees: a dispatcher to fill the vacancy caused by Peach’s murder and a new officer to replace Elton, who accepted a position with the Bangor PD. Colt’s excited about having his niece and nephew spend the entire summer with him and is hopeful he’ll be able to get them acclimated before it’s time for him to pick them up. Colt’s current investigation involves the discovery of a man’s body in the walk-in freezer when the wrecking crew tears down what was left of Velma’s Diner after the recent fire. Meanwhile, after removing a wall in the carriage house, Jeremy and Lonnie Parker, who is helping Jeremy renovate the structure, find four boxes filled with men’s clothing and personal possessions and an old sea captain’s chest, which appear to have been hidden there since the late nineteen forties.
The Inn at Holiday Bay is a great series read! Kathi Daley always creates such likable characters. In every book I feel as though I’m right there in the small town relaxing on the front porch rocking chair drinking sweet tea, gabbing, and inhaling the scent of barbecued ribs and corn. There’s a good hometown feel with a sense of innocence and warmth. I’ve also read 12 of Daley’s “Cottage on Gooseberry Bay” series - another series I’ve enjoyed and anxiously await book 13 Halloween Bay which will be released September 12, 2023.
Abby, the point of view Holiday Bay is from: “I loved everything about my life in Holiday Bay and really couldn’t imagine my life turning out differently. I loved my friends, and I loved Colt. I wasn’t sure how things would go in the upcoming months with all of the changes that he would need to deal with, but in my heart, I knew we’d figure it out together as we always had.”
Whelp, the above sums it up! Colt has his niece and nephew for the summer to give their grandparents (Colt’s parents) a much needed break from the tweens and the children may end up permanently with Colt. That is yet to be determined.
Daley gives us a few mysteries to be solved and Abby is willing to assist. One of the things I like about Daley’s writing style is that her main character isn’t annoyingly curious/nosey. In other cozy mysteries I’ve read the main person is so inquisitive that she is actually aggressive about her questions of witnesses. Like it’s her business anyway! Daley’s characters have a sort of pure intent and a graceful way about them when gathering info.
Next is book 24 which will be released September 26, 2023 - The Inn at Holiday Bay: Witness in the Wedding. I’ve just realized Daley is working on writing at least two different series at the same time! Wow, talk about splitting lives. How in the world does she keep the townspeople’s lives separate from one another and will the two (Gooseberry Bay and Holiday Bay) ever intersect?
For my next read I have chosen a book by JB Lynn - “The Hitwoman’s Dying Wish: A Comical Crime Caper” - Book 38 Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman. I have enjoyed the previous 37 in this series. Maggie is an “accidental” hitwoman. She is usually given a mark by her unofficial boss who happens to be with the mob. She isn’t very good at this job because she usually kind of falls into murdering people… on accident. Read these and you’ll understand. Be prepared for a lot of stress and drama though. I find myself clenched pretty tight the entire time, but at least there are little intermissions when Maggie and the animals talk to each other. Yes! She understands animals! And, boy does she have lots of them in every species. Fun is usually had in Hitwoman.
As good as ever, I couldn't put this latest installment from the Inn at Holiday Bay down. These books, as all of Kathi Daleys books are, are very readable a d the stories captivate you.
This book takes place at the start of Summer, Jeremy and Lonnie are starting work on converting the Carriage House into a home for Jeremy, Mylie and Annabelle. Whilst clearing the space, several boxes of possessions come to light, and some of the regular guests at the Inn take the clues and try to find out more about the people named.
Abby is happy with the way things are running at the Inn she owns, with Georgia her manager and chef. Colt, Abby's boyfriend and Sheriff of the town has new staff, hopefully freeing him up a little so he can look after his niece and nephew during the Summer.
When a body turns up at the demolished diner, which was previously owned by Velma, Colt's time and that of his new second in command is soon occupied.
The books in this series are all standalone mysteries but they are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.
I'm looking forward to the new series spin off starting which is about the Bookshop, and then there's the other spin off series about the Bisteo, which I still need to read.
MS Daley is a consistent author who writes enjoyable cozy mysteries I do wish she would find other verbs besides "sharing" The thesaurus is full of suggestions
This is the 23rd book of The Inn at Holiday Bay series. We once again visit Holiday Bay, Maine at the beginning of Summer. Colt is looking forward to his niece and nephew coming to stay with him for the summer. In the meantime, Colt has hired a new Dispatcher and another deputy so with all he has going on, there hasn't been able to spend enough time with Abby, which has caused some concern.
Jeremy and Mylie's wedding is quickly approaching, so Lonnie is preparing their cottage so they can move in. It's upsetting that they're thinking about moving the wedding date to accommodate Annabelle's mother's schedule. They discover some ancient trunks while tearing down a wall in the cottage, which leads to a mystery that several inn guests are determined to solve.
A dead body is discovered by the crew tearing down what is left of Velma's diner, which heightens the tension.
A lot is going in the 23rd book in this series. I really do like this series and I love all the characters but 23 is enough. There comes a time when we know there has been enough done to this story. It has gotten to where I am not looking forward to another one. I am not sure there will be another one but, in my opinion, this should be the last. I know there is a spinoff coming out called Bookstore at Holiday Bay. The first book is coming out at the end of June 2023 with number two not far behind, in October 2023.
Abby Sullivan started over in Holiday Bay after losing her husband and infant son. She now has a popular and profitable inn and a core of friends who are family. The town itself is great and she has a lot of friends. In this book, Lonnie is helping Jeremy convert the carriage house where they find a long-hidden mystery. Then, an even bigger mystery comes up when a body is found. Abby is involved with both.
This has been a fantastic series and this book was one that "did the series proud". It was a quick, fun read that was well-written with wonderful characters. I was drawn in and kept hooked from start to finish. This engaging story had a couple intriguing mysteries that will have you guessing throughout. I love this series with the theme of starting over and finding where you were meant to be all along. It shows that you can process the pain and move on with your life. I highly recommend both book and series which I believe is best read in order.
The demolition of Velma's diner was a sad sight for everyone, but the biggest surprise came when they were cleaning up the demolition, the one thing they didn't expect to find was a body in the freezer. And then there's the mystery of the four boxes found in the old carriage house while Jeremy is renovating it. Men who seem to have simply disappeared decades ago so Joel, George and the crew start researching the details. On top of all this Colt has his new trainee and dispatcher working with him as he trains them and tries to solve the murder. Truth is there are so many twists and turns and more surprises than you can shake a stick at coming from every direction. But in the end the murderer is revealed and the mysteries are solved. Great read.
I like this series and have read every book so far. For this one, I found it an easy read and for the most part loved the everyday activities at the inn as much as the mysteries. I always feel happy to be visiting the characters and reading about the animals. I gave this story 4 stars vs. 5 as I thought the two mysteries going on in the story a bit weaker than in previous books. There just did not seem to be the surprise about the murder situations as in other books. The other thing is that there is starting to be a lot of characters in these stories and getting harder to keep straight.
New book in this series by Kathi Daley. Written in her usual interesting and comprehensive style. This author knows how to tell a story. And write one too. Velma’s diner is finally torn down after the fire destroyed it. Then a body is found in the freezer. Uh oh. Strange hints on who and why. Then things are found in the carriage house from the 1940’s. What happened to the men that owned them. Another mystery though not as urgent as the fresh body found but still a good mystery to be unraveled.
This has been a wonderful series and I've loved every book. I get the feeling that the series may be ending soon...but I hope not! Another great story with wonderful characters.
Amazon synopsis: This is book 23 in the series, Lonnie helps Jeremy convert the carriage house into a home as important life changes loom on the horizon. Meanwhile, Velma works with Lou on a solution to her own situation, and a whole new group of guests, each with their own life situation to figure out, check in at the inn.
Great story of friends and family in a small seaside town. Death comes calling for one of the current residents under suspicious circumstances; and, the discovery of some old boxes containing the personal effects of 5 men who stayed at the Inn 75 years before created another mystery to be solved. While the police work on the current case, a group of senior residents and guests at the Inn work together to solve the mystery surrounding the boxes found in the carriage house and what became of their owners.
Another cozy story set in Holiday Bay with another secondary mystery to the main one that poses lots of questions. Who committed the current murder of the body found in the burned out rubble of Velma's former cafe; and what happened at the resort in the 40's and 50's when it was a healing retreat that would cause some of the guests to disappear without taking their belongings which are now discovered in the carriage house during the remodel...
I always enjoy reading the books in this series. I like getting to know the people who stay there and to know what is happening with all the regulars. The mysteries always seem to have an ending that I didn't think of and there is usually a secondary plot involving the inn itself. You cannot really enjoy these books as a stand alone. You need to read the series from the beginning to understand all the players.
This book was another great book from Kathie Daley!! The bistro and the inn and the bookstore characters all develop in each of these series but I hope it doesn't mean we have to let go of any of them!! I started the Inn series from the beginning. I hope this series has a few more or ten! Love Holiday Bay! Love the characters and the " gentle murders" - as without gore and bloody details just great mystery to solve them. Read them all!!
The series has been going on for quite a while and this book is as interesting as the first book. I believe it is number 21 or 22.
I think one reason it feels so fresh is all the changes and people cycling through. I really enjoyed the investigation into the boxes found in the carriage house from 80 years ago.
The murder and the solution was also rather unique.
Lots going on in this one. Lonnie is working on a carriage house for Jeremy and Mylie and they discover some old boxes and a sea chest that they would like to find the origin of. Velma is away while her beloved diner is being torn down after the fire, but a body is found in the freezer. Colt hires a new deputy, Alex, who is a petite beauty and Abby wonders if she should be jealous. Colt’s niece and nephew are coming for the summer and it puts another damper on Colt and Abby’s relationship.
Abby and the gang have two mysteries on their hands. One is a recent murder and the other is five unexplainable disappearances in the late 40's and 50's. The story flows from scene to scene with an interesting find through out. I really enjoyed this book and if you love cozy mysteries don't miss this one.
Really enjoyable series - Kathi always makes you anticipate the next book!!!
Love this story line and the way all the characters interact! The murder mystery was good, but the mystery behind the chest and boxes was great!! Looking forward to the new series with Lou and Velma and the bookstore, but also the next book in this series!
I look forward to each new chapter in the lives of The residents of Holiday Bay. The mystery is interesting. But the changes in the town: the new characters who stay at the Inn; the evolution of relationships and the history of each person and of the town and Maine keep me coming back for more. It is like visiting old friends….
I have thoroughly enjoyed this cozy murder mystery series. From the characters to the town, I have loved it all so much that I read them all in 10 days, only to find out that I have to wait until the end of September for the last one. I just hope it ends in a way that is happy for all the characters I have come yo love so much!
Change is the theme of this is fast but fun story!
From the first word to the last word you’re going to see the many changes taking place in Holiday Bay. Some sad changes, some exciting changes with new storyline possibilities. New friends come and old friends go just like in life. You will be ready for the next story!
Enjoyed the story but the carriage house, although it was where they found the "treasures" didn't really feature in the story too much. The body in the freezer seemed bro take over the story. Would have appreciated more detail about opening the chest and about what was in each of the boxes and the chest.
I can always count on Kathi Daley to write mysteries within a mystery. I love trying to figure out who dun it. The characters are wonderful and very inspiring. The mysteries are amazing and never quite what I thought. With Abby's help, Colt always gets to the bottom of the twists and turns that the investigation takes. Great Read.
I love this cozy mystery series and this one was no exception. This one has 2 things involved, the clues in the carriage house which things from the past and old trunk. Plus there is the murder of Larry who was stuffed in the freezer of Velma's old dinner that burned. This is a good catch up with all the news and the new series that extends from this one. A VERY GOOD COZY READ.
Change is in the air and there are clues everywhere!
So many things are happening in this one. But fortunately there are clues to help solve many of the problems. But at least the carriage house is getting remodeled. And new people are in to help where others have left. Now what will happen this summer?
I am reading the books in order and have enjoyed every one of them. The characters feel like family and friends and really are enjoyable as they take me away to a different reality several times a day. Sensitive subjects are well handled but in a way that readers can relate . Kathi Daley definitely has a gift in her ability to write.
The ease of reading and the pure enjoyment of following the different characters of this series and meeting new characters is pure enjoyment its fast easy reading and keeps me guessing I highly recommend the entire series Abby and georgia feel like family
