For the past five years, FBI Special Agent Risa Jacobs has worked in the violent crimes against children division of the Houston FBI. She’s never had reason to believe there’s a target on her back . . . until now.

When the long-awaited reunion between Risa and her brother, Trenton, ends in tragedy, Risa is riddled with guilt, unable to cope with the responsibility she feels over his death. On leave from the FBI, Risa returns to her former career as an English teacher at a local college, only to see her past and present collide when one of her students, Carson Mercury, turns in an assignment that reads like an eyewitness account of her brother’s murder, with details never revealed publicly.

Alarmed by Carson’s inside knowledge of Trenton’s death, Risa reaches out to her former partner at the FBI. Special Agent Gage Patterson has been working a string of baby kidnappings, but he agrees to help look into Carson’s background. Risa and Gage soon discover their cases might be connected as a string of high-value thefts have occurred at properties where security systems were installed by Carson’s stepfather and children have gone missing. There’s a far more sinister plot at play than they ever imagined, and innocent lives are in danger.

For fans of romantic suspense comes a heart-pounding thriller about loss, betrayal, and finding the strength to trust again.

FACING THE ENEMY by DiAnn Mills is an intriguing and fast paced Christian romantic suspense/FBI crime mystery featuring an FBI Special agent determined to get justice for her murdered brother and her FBI Special agent partner determined to help even when pushed away. The emotional crime investigations and budding romance pulled me in and kept me reading.

FBI Special Agent Risa Jacobs’s brother, Trenton, who has been in rehab wishes to go to dinner with her to make amends after years of drug abuse and breaking the law. On the walk after dinner to Risa’s apartment, Trenton saves Risa’s life at the cost of his own from a hit and run driver. She is overcome with guilt when she discovers she was the target. Everyone in her personal circle is threatened unless she resigns from the FBI.

On a secret leave from the FBI, Risa uncovers information which may tie Trenton’s death to a theft and baby kidnapping ring being worked by her ex-partner, FBI Special Agent Gage Patterson. They begin to work together again and as their personal feelings grow and are exposed, they discover there is a far more sinister plot at play and innocent lives are at stake.

I felt the personal journey of forgiveness Risa goes through in this story was very well written and believable. The romantic subplot between Risa and Gage was well paced throughout the story and I the found the religious based discussions did not detract. They are a heroine and hero that complement each other in temperament, beliefs, and chemistry. The crime mystery is intricately plotted with plenty of twists and surprises. I did feel though there was a suspension of belief in the plot with the FBI allowing Risa to work in secret as she did. If I overlooked that, this Christian romantic suspense is highly engaging and entertaining.

I can recommend curling up with this Christian romantic suspense/FBI crime mystery for an exciting read.

I love the cover and title for Facing The Enemy by Diann Mills. This is my first novel by Diann Mills, but now she is on my radar.

Ya gotta have a good bad guy to have a good good guy and Risa fits that good guy bill, along with her partner/boyfriend, Gage.

Her troubles begin when her brother, Trenton, is killed by a hit and run driver. She learns the kill was meant for her. She has been estranged from her drug addicted brother, but he wanted to meet her to begin over. His life would be ended before he had the chance. Because of a warning left for her, she begins to work undercover, letting everyone think she has left the FBI and is now a college professor. That is where she meets Carson, and everything begins to come together.

In the beginning, Gage doesn’t know she is working undercover, but when he finds out, they team up to chase the leads supplied by Carson. More FBI agents will fall. It takes a brazen villain to take out FBI agents, as if they are gang bangers or cartel members.

Risa and Gage work in the violent crimes against children division of the FBI. They complement each other, her being a bit headstrong and him more down to earth. She is reminded of that when they travel together to track down Carson.

It is not her fault that men do wrong and she it takes some time for her to accept that God gives man free will. It is up to them what they do with it.

Her dad was a race car driver and taught her how to drive. She is Speed Racer and leaves Gage white knuckled. I love that about her. I used to be a bit of a Speed Racer in my younger years and love that I can relate to a character in a personal way. It adds that little bit extra that makes me like the character more.

As the good guys fall and the body count rises, it’s obvious that someone with an awful lot of power, untouchable, is at the head of the organization. Is it one person? Is it a syndicate?

A problem, for me, started in Chapter 62. I wasn’t surprised by it. It seems to be a common occurrence in romantic suspense novels and hard to get around.

The action and adventure travels throughout the country as they dodge bullets, cars and those that want them dead. It becomes difficult to tell who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Innocent lives are sacrificed, stolen. It’s disgusting when defenseless children, and women who cannot defend themselves, are used for someone’s monetary gain. They are some of the most despicable people in the world and my feelings toward them, fictional or otherwise, get my blood boiling. We can only hope that Karma comes back to bite them!!!!!!!!

I do love that a piece of the author’s personal life is the start of Risa’s story. Will it end here? Will there be a sequel? Is this a series? As far as, will it end here, I think one story is told and one is open ended. As far as a sequel or series, I think the answer could be yes.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Facing The Enemy by Diann Mills.

"A strong woman faces the enemy and walks through the fire. Just like you're doing. A coward stuffs her grief and attempts to will it away."

As an FBI agent, Risa should be able to handle whatever comes her way. But suddenly she is trying to navigate a grief that she never anticipated. Hiding away is not helping. But will she know how to find the answers that she seeks? Is she willing to reach out to those who care about her and want to help?

This is another incredible romantic suspense book by this author. After so many years of writing incredible fiction, how the author can continue to come up with original and interesting plots amazes me! So many twists and turns. Once you start reading this book, you won't want to stop.

This latest book by DiAnn Mills is highly recommended. If you enjoy books that keep you guessing without all of the gore and yuck, I highly suggest that you pick up this one. Glad I could read this book on NetGalley. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.

Facing the Enemy is another fast-paced romantic suspense from DiAnn Mills. I especially enjoyed the heroine. She is brave and daring and does what she feels necessary in the pursuit of justice for her brother. The hero is her calming balm and her voice of reason. They really complement each other very well. The storyline is original, and the action kept me turning the pages. If you are a romantic suspense fan, then you will really enjoy this novel. I know I did.

A hit-and-run murder. A baby kidnapping ring. FBI agents being targeted. All this – plus a sweet romance and thoughtful explorations of grief and loss – awaits you on the pages of DiAnn Mills’ latest suspense, Facing the Enemy.

Our first encounters with Agent Risa Jacobs are a roller coaster of emotions – cautious hope to joy to unspeakable grief… all in one day. My heart went out to her, and I wished I could reach through the pages and hug her tight. On top of all this, she is threatened with harm to other people she loves if she doesn’t resign from the FBI immediately. Talk about major upheaval in such a short time! Cut off from everyone in her inner circle – for their safety – she battles grief and guilt in isolation even as she’s determined to find justice for her brother’s death. And then…. one chilling short story flips the script yet again and we’re off and running, back with her partner Gage (with whom she’s in love) and hunting a consortium of ruthless killers with heart-stopping danger at every turn.

Just about the time I thought I had things pieced together, another twist upended my mental jigsaw puzzle and sent me – and Risa & Gage – back to square one, with a few more pieces completed than I had before… once the dust settles, that is. The villains in Facing the Enemy are truly vile with no respect for human life and willing to use gruesome means to get rid of whoever might stand in their way. Be prepared to have the wind knocked out of you a few times in this one. Needless to say, I cheered quite loudly (in my head) when these particular bad guys were brought to justice, and I was quite proud of Risa for some kick-butt defensive strategies there at the end. And while the active criminals in this novel are resolved quite satisfactorily, it does leave some doors open for possible future books, too. (Gage in particular has a loose thread that I’d love to see tied up someday.)

Bottom Line: Facing the Enemy is another thrill ride from DiAnn Mills, a high-stakes suspense that engages your emotions as it barrels to a harrowing conclusion. Some of the dialogue is a bit choppy at first and I struggled to understand some of Risa’s early decisions, but both of those issues disappeared as I became absorbed in the story. The romance between Gage & Risa is sweet, and I liked that we switched back and forth between their first person POVs because it gave me insight into Gage’s feelings too. I also appreciated that counseling is highlighted as a way to help process loss and grief – “Honesty brings us one step closer to healing and giving the tragedy to God.” – and that we get a front row seat to Risa’s renewed relationship with God. All of this makes the characters that much more relatable and gives the novel a balanced perspective that speaks to our hearts.

The sudden death of her previously estranged brother leaves FBI Special Agent Risa Jacobs reeling and questioning her responsibility in the tragedy as well as her faith. Her partner, Gage Patterson, doesn’t understand when she resigns from the FBI to go back to teaching creative writing at a college, but he vows to keep working her brother’s case. But when a student turns in a writing assignment that is a spot-on eyewitness account of her brother’s murder, Risa finally has a lead to pursue and won’t be staying away from the FBI long.

This is the third DiAnn Mills book I’ve read, and though I did like the first one, I’m starting to notice a trend in which I don’t get along well with her writing style. I often found myself confused and unable to grasp the meaning in the author’s choice of words. Dialog felt unnatural or stilted, especially during interviews with people involved in the investigations, and characters’ words didn’t always quite line up with each other’s. And sometimes, it seems like there’s subject-verb confusion that should have easily been caught by an editor. It’s a little difficult to explain, but I’ll share one quote that I think is a good example of what I mean. Said by a character: “Running didn’t keep them safe. But fear took over. Still am.” I promise, I’m not leaving anything out that would explain what the “Still am” refers to, or if I did, it’s because what it refers to is so separate from the rest of this quote that I didn’t realize that’s what it was supposed to connect with. And maybe plenty of people will read that line and just keep going, because the intent is clear enough (still am…running, I guess?). But for me, I can’t help but stop short and think, “Huh? Still am what? Huh?” And that takes me right out of the story. And since this is just one example of a lot of different lines that made me scratch my head, hopefully that gives a good enough understanding of why I struggled to get into this story.

The message in the book is good, though, and the main reason I gave it two stars is for the conversation with the psychologist, who I felt asked some good questions and really got to the heart of Risa’s grief, doubt, and self-blame. I wish it could have come a little earlier in the book to spare us some of the angst, but it was still appreciated. The relationship between the two MCs, on the other hand, also confused me. They’ve been partners for five years and are both already in love with each other (secretly) at the start of the story, yet sometimes it seems like they really have a lot to get to know about each other still. The writing assignment angle, which is what really caught my attention in the synopsis and made me want to try another DiAnn Mills book, hoping it would be more like the first one I read than the second, was a pretty big let-down for me. I also struggled with consistency issues in various places. I really dislike giving this low of a rating to any book, and I’ve found myself questioning my own ability to read and comprehend what I’m reading correctly, since I’ve so far been in the vast minority with my thoughts of this book and the previous one I didn’t care for. Please check out other reviews for different opinions, as most of them are positive so far, if you’re interested in the synopsis and/or genre.

I love a good mystery, especially when there is intrigue, romance, and faith all rolled into the story.

This one covers a more sensitive subject, child abduction and other crimes against children. As the story dives deeper into the dark belly of crime, it brings to life how much that I don't know or am aware of in our own world. This may be a fictional story, but it could be true, which is very sad. Crimes against children should never happen. So grab hold of your children and keep them safe.

I came to admire Risa for many reasons. She is analytical, cares about her family, and believes in what she is doing for her career. So when her brother is killed by mistake, it sends her into a tailspin. She does not handle the grief very well and begins to doubt her faith in God. I appreciated her struggles and coming to terms with the situation. Everyone handles grief differently, and she is no different. I appreciated the chapter with a counselor. It just reinforces that it is okay to ask for help when you need it.

I enjoyed the romance between Risa and Gage. They both repress their feelings for one another until finally giving in and admitting they love one another. This brings out the protector in Gage, perhaps more so due to his feelings for Risa. This is a good and a bad thing! They are both FBI, and you will discover in various situations that Risa has no problems taking care of herself.

Watching the mystery come together confirmed some of my suspicions but blew me away in other respects because there were several aspects that I didn't consider in trying to solve the crime. I had a feeling that several paths were going to merge, but the "how" was unknown until it happened. The story is complex, and I admire the author for handling all of the pieces in the right way.

This is another winner in my book, and we give this book 5 paws up.

Whenever I read a story by author DiAnn Mills, I have come to expect an engrossing and well-developed storyline, and Facing the Enemy brilliantly achieved that. I continue to be amazed at just how much “good stuff” Mills can squeeze into a single story. She mastered her craft.

Facing the Enemy is set in present day Houston, Texas. It follows the lives of partnered FBI Special Agents Risa Jacobs and Gage Patterson. They work in the Violent Crimes Against Children Division of the Houston FBI. As Risa and her younger brother are crossing a street, a car speeds toward them and results in the grisly death of her brother. Risa later learns that the driver meant to kill her and not her brother. This sets Risa off; she leaves the FBI and sets out on a path of vengeance. She enlists the help of her former partner, Gage, who then splits his time between Risa’s mission and the FBI case he’s working with a new partner, relating to an illegal adoption ring who is stealing babies. Eventually, Risa and Gage realize the two cases could be related.

That synopsis was a mouthful, but the storyline is quite complex. It’s quite the feat, in my opinion, for an author to deliver such a complex plot, while not losing the reader, yet keeping everything moving along with a reasonable pace. DiAnn Mills handled it all quite well.

The entire story is written in the first person narrative, but the POV changes periodically between Risa and Gage. That is usually a fabulous way of telling a story, but on my NetGalley, there were formatting issues that ran paragraphs together, and that made it hard to tell who was speaking. I imagine that will be remedied in any final copies.

Risa and Gage are endearing characters, with Risa being the big risk taker and Gage intent on keeping her in check. There is a love relationship that blooms throughout the story. I do wish there was a little more backstory on how that began because there are times when Risa and Gage do or say things, with respect to their relationship, that to me seemed a bit out of character.  But the character arcs are very good, and Risa’s arc would probably be somewhat jagged if drawn on paper. That’s not a bad thing.

Mills has a wonderful way with description. Sometimes she’ll describe something, and it’s so perfect I can’t believe I never read it before. For example; “His words warmed me like a quilt on a chilly night.” Another perfect phrase: “My eyes pooled with liquid regret.” There are quite a number of those “perfect phrases” in this particular story. I enjoyed every one of them.

The pacing, to me, was a little awkward at first, but it got on track quickly, and after that happened I couldn’t put it down. I love the way this author leads up to a climax. Every sentence seems to be strategically placed so engagement is increased with each turned page. I can’t give you an example of that without spoilers, so you’ll just have to read it yourself.

There’s a lot to enjoy in this story, and I highly recommend it!

Facing the Enemy DiAnn Mills

The Short Story: Fast, furious, crime thriller with a hefty dose of christian values

My Review: DiAnn Mills strikes again with a red-hot mystery thriller. When FBI agent Risa Jacobs receives a death threat against her, her family and her co-workers she takes a step back from her job and returns to the academic world as a creative writing teacher. Although on a leave of absence, with her bosses blessing, she continues to work on a case that affects her personally. Her ex-partner Gage Patterson gets a new partner and a new case, a child abduction/fake adoption scheme. After a series of tragic events, Risa and Gage realize their cases may be related. They must work together to stop a ruthless crime syndicate that is bent on taking them out.

This is the third book I’ve read by Mills and she continues to impress with her intricately plotted thrillers. Mills’ characters are vulnerable, flawed, but always seeking comfort, redemption and forgiveness in their christian values and relationship with God. Mills lets them explore their faith in an open and honest conversation. There is a romance but the emphasis is on their love for each other and not the physical aspect, which is kept to a few kisses.

I really enjoyed Facing the Enemy. Set in Houston, my hometown, it was fun to follow the characters to familiar and not so familiar parts of town. The crime kept me riveted and I only guessed the ‘baddie’ near the end of the story. I highly recommend this fast-paced story to those who enjoy crime/thrillers with a lot of action, suspense and a few nail biting scenes.

DiAnn Mills’ latest, FACING THE ENEMY has it all! Nail-biting suspense, red herrings to fill an ocean, romance, more twists than tornado alley, and a poignant exploration into faith, grief, and forgiveness.

FBI agents Risa and Gage carry their own secrets and they are about to interfere with their investigations of a series murders that includes Risa’s only brother, and a baby selling cartel.

I highly recommend this book to romantic suspense readers looking to explore new faith territories.

"A strong woman faces the enemy and walks through the fire."

Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills is an exhilarating ride of intrigue, extortion, murder, exploitation, and a bit of romance. DiAnn continues to thrill readers with this fast-paced story that never lets up for even one second. Grab your favorite beverage and claim a comfy chair because you won’t want to put this one down.

Risa Jacobs is an FBI agent in Houston, Texas, but takes a step back from the agency and into her previous profession as a college English professor after a deliberate hit and run leaves her family reeling. Risa is still in the crosshairs as the intended target, so the danger level is sky high. To add a bit more excitement to the mix, Risa and her FBI partner, Gage Patterson, are smack dab in the middle of their own personal quandary as they dance around their feelings for each other. The romance here is skittish at first, stringing the reader along for a bit but with the expectation that these two are meant to be together. They just fit, but with all the warnings, bullets, and bad guys zinging around, stepping away from the FBI and her role in the violent crimes against children division is her only choice to keep her family and others safe from a mysterious enemy who won't hesitate to harm or eliminate anyone to push an evil agenda. That is, until a student turns in a short story in Risa's creative writing class that flips the entire narrative.

DiAnn Mills sure knows how to keep the story fresh, lively, and full of surprises with each chapter. Risa and Gage and several other characters are well developed, almost from the first chapter, and two seemingly separate plots are quickly weaved together to form one fantastic story. Child exploitation and greedy evildoers preying on the tender emotions of families longing to adopt a baby are heartbreaking themes here and provide both the main characters and readers with a jagged edge to navigate.

The overall tone of Facing the Enemy, therefore, is an interesting combination of somber and sweet. Family plays an important role here, and Mills expertly portrays many sides of what family means to different people, bound by blood, friendship, or love or perhaps a unique mix of all these and more. A few things are clear in Facing the Enemy: Everyone harbors secrets, trust must be earned and maintained, and the line between innocent and guilty can be either bold and uncrossable or blurred and shifting. Risa and Gage are facing the enemy head on and walking this electrifying tightrope together. Watching their feelings for each other tentatively search for a strong foothold is definitely the sweet part of this story.

You cannot go wrong with anything written by DiAnn Mills, so grab a copy of Facing the Enemy and prepare to be enthralled and ready to dive into all her other books.

So I enjoyed part of this story, but in the end, the cons unfortunately outweighed the pros in terms of content.

Negative Elements

Language: screwed up, sucks, darn (each used once). Someone uselessly tries to deny their affection for someone, and tells the person who pointed it out that they were talking through their rear. (Whatever they meant by that, this was really inappropriate.) A mention of someone deserving a good rear chewing.

Other negative content/triggers: A side character is found beheaded.

A male character offers for a female character to use his place as a safe house. Not a wise idea, especially considering his past choices and regrets. They don't, but this was terrible idea to even bring up. A mention of his past sin, and the guilt the character still carries because of it. The female MC wears a sorta short off the shoulder dress.
Blood- a character writes a short story in which the villain has a disgusting desire to spill blood, and lots of it. :-P

So it's a bummer that because of all the various bits of crummy content, I have to rate this one star. If you want a good clean thriller/suspense story, I recommend reading the author's previous book, Concrete Evidence instead.

Thank you the publisher for the complimentary e-book I received to review through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, and the thoughts above are my own.

Facing the Enemy was such an intense read. This is the first Diann Mills book I’ve read. I can assure you, I want to read more. Her writing pulls you in and you become hooked from the first few pages.

Both main characters are dynamic, smart, and in love with each other. The problem is neither one has spoken about it with the other. They were FBI agent partners until someone killed Risa’s brother in a hit-and-run. She finds out they really were trying to kill her. The guilt and shame that Lisa goes through is heartbreaking when she knows they are after her.

Gage is kind loyal and good at what he does. Working together to find Lisa’s brother's killer, they become closer and closer. There were so many smaller pieces in this story that started weaving together the picture. I felt like I was on a wild ride where I could either jump off or hang on for dear life. This whole storyline is so compelling you don’t want to put the book down. There were several red herrings in the novel to keep readers on their toes. Mentally I’d sit there reading while simultaneously trying to put everything together, The other part of the story is about a baby being kidnapped and a ring of people that sold stolen babies. This was an emotional book about Rosa’s brother dying and the many babies that had been taken away from their now-empty arms.

I know this is vague but I will never ruin a book and give away details. Facing the Enemy is a novel that Romantic Suspense readers need to latch onto and put aside time to read. This book was such a great and emotional read with enough romance and suspense to keep all readers happily sitting on the edge of their seats.

This thrilling and absorbing novel will keep you on your toes with its intricate plot. Ms. Mills surely knows how to pique my interest with her stories of FBI agents trying to solve crimes of current relevance. This time it is a baby buying racket targeting unwed mothers. She crafts her villains with all the traits that have you cringing and rooting all the more for the good guys.
Agent partners, Risa and Gage face danger and puzzling circumstances while they try to get to the bottom-or the top- of the baby ring. I was shocked more than a few times at the turns in the story. A welcome aspect was the growing faith of Risa as she navigates her grief. “Honesty brings us one step closer to healing and giving the tragedy to God.”
I liked the scenes with the Christian therapist and how she helped Risa work through her apprehensions.
The romance that Risa and Gage finally acknowledged was realistic and showed struggles that were plausible.
This was an excellent, suspenseful story that focused on a significant and disturbing crime.

This is a new standalone novel written by Diann Mills. It is filled with suspense, mystery, romance and a gruesome scenario! Fortunately the author doesn't go into too much detail on that one@

The novel is written in first person, If I'm honest, I find that sort of perspective harder to get into but that is personal preference and it shouldn't stop you reading the novel. I did like the plot twists I have to say and the concurrent cases. I liked how they interweaved with the overall story. It was well done.

A brother she hadn’t heard from in years, a call to meet.
Was it just the need of his FBI sister to bail him out again.
Her faith, and her dream he was on the right track.
She didn’t notice the car, her training and her faith was it now lost.
Gage the comfort he gave her and others in the office.
A note saying to resign, why was she the one someone wanted.

Another great read from DiAnn Mills. Loved the characters and the mystery. This book grips you from the start and I had a hard time putting it down. I would recommend this book to romantic suspense readers.

**4.5 Stars, Rounded Up**

Every time I read a DiAnn Mills book, I am reminded why I enjoy her work. For me, she stands alone in the romantic suspense genre for her storytelling. Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills is filled with characters, each one serving a specific purpose in moving the tale forward. The number of characters might could have been confusing, but Mills makes them easy to differentiate between. Before you can forget an identity, Mills offers a gentle reminder. I cannot express how strongly I loved this book! It kept me company on a flight, and I loved Risa and Gage from the very beginning.

Risa and Gage both have hard pasts. As partners at the FBI, they spoke little of their histories, understanding that doing so would be like walking through mine fields of pain. They grew to care deeply for each other, yet the word “love” was never spoken. A relationship could risk both of their careers…and then Risa leaves the FBI after the death of her brother. A death that should’ve been hers, as Trenton pushed Risa out of the way. Suddenly, Gage and Risa’s lives no longer intersect, and the absences makes their hearts grow fonder. Their independent investigations push them together, and love and justice become the qualities that matter most.

Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills needs every paragraph on its 350+ pages. The story has numerous twists and turns that kept me biting my fingernails until I reached the end. Mills expertly intertwines crime and mystery with her evident adoration of creative writing. I thoroughly enjoyed that Risa’s second career as a creative writing professor, as the anecdotes reminded me of my own creative writing course I took at my university. Though I must say, I would’ve much rather had Risa as my instructor!

What is beautiful about Facing the Enemy is its character arcs. Gage and Risa have individual hills and valleys unending. Risa goes from an all-time high to an all-time low. Gage, too, goes through his own tribulations. But they survive. They learn from their faults and their challenges. The characters make mistakes. They turn from their values, but ultimately, Gage and Risa come back to the truth…and eventually, each other.

Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills is one of her best books that I have read. Hands down.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Facing the Enemy is a winner for me when it comes to a good heartstopping Suspense. Risa is excited to see her brother again, but the outcome is nothing she ever expected. It wasnt until she went back to her old job of teaching that the issues are brought to life. She was surprised that an assignment turn in was an account of her brothers death, in chilling details. With the help of her former partner Special Agent Gage Patterson, details start to surface.

This chilling and thrilling story will truly have you sitting on the edge of your seat bitting your nails. I love getting to know Risa and Gage as I followed rheir journey trying to find who is doing all of these crimes. As they look into Risa’s student, Carson’s life they find more than they bargained for, but a start on who and where the responsibility falls on.

I really like Risa and Gage and learned a lot about law enforcement and what is involved in a case. Author Diann Mills does a fantastic job with researching her story well, and it shows in the detailed scenes throughout the story. The twists and turns will have your head spinning and wondering what is coming next. I love these stories such as this one. I was so engrossed in the story, I didn’t want it to end. If you enjoy a good heartstopping Suspense thriller full of chills and pulls out all the bells, then you need to read Diann Mills Facing the Enemy. I’m giving this book Five Stars, and oh how I wish I could give it more.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

While this book had some good action and surprises, the overall conclusion to the book is predictable. The book opens with the accident that caused the death of Risa's brother, Trenton. The book moves quickly in the beginning from the death of Trenton, to the funeral, to the threatening letter. Risa and Gage are partners working in the FBI's Crimes Against Children unit. Both have history of why they chose the unit to work in and while they make a big deal out of Gage's history, its pretty anticlimactic. When it comes to romance in the book, it felt like I missed Risa and Gage's getting to know each other phase. Both characters from the beginning have inner thoughts of love for the other without much explanation as to how they came to the conclusion. The author's continued reminders from the characters that they love each other dearly only seems to shove it down the readers throat that they really do love each other. The only relatable character was Gage, Risa's partner. Most of the characters, including Risa appeared to be more static, their replies were simply without much thought for progression of their characters. The book is only 334 pages; however, based on the story, I wish it was longer. If the book was more thought out and had more context for their origins, the ending would make more sense. The second to last chapter ends up with the engagement of Gage and Risa. The last chapter ends three months later, with the promotion of Gage so that Risa and Gage can still work in the FBI- Crimes Against Children unit. It felt like the author couldn't decide whether to write a mystery/crime book or a romance novel and tried to put two books in one.

This high-stake inspirational romantic suspense novel packs a punch as FBI Special Agent Risa Jacobs with the Violent Crimes Against Children division of the Houston FBI is the target of a hit-and-run. Her brother, Trenton, has returned home with good news that he’s turning his life around. They exit the restaurant together and start crossing the street—a vehicle speeds toward them. Trenton pushes Risa aside. He’s hit and dies. Risa is grief-stricken and blames herself for her brother’s death. She learns she is the intended target, not her brother.
She goes on leave from the FBI and opts to teach at the local college until she can overcome the guilt consuming her. One of her students turns in his homework. His short story reveals details of her brother’s death. Was the student the killer?
FBI Special Agent Gage Patterson receives a call from his former partner and love interest, Risa Jacobs. At her request, Gage agrees to help in her investigation while still working on his case investigating baby kidnappings.
Is it possible Gage and Risa’s cases will merge? How many agents must die before the killer is brought to justice? Will Gage and Risa be able to rekindle their relationship as they partner together to solve both cases?

Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills features two mysteries that come around and tie together into one eye opening ending. Mills does a wonderful job at diving into a story that uses a writing assignment and missing babies and ties them together. The writing assignment was my favorite part. As a budding author, it felt unique and different. The plot did capture my attention and did not let go. As for the budding romance between Gage and Rise, it seemed a little over the top. Yes, the heroine and the hero have a past, but personally, I wanted a little deeper of a relationship before they dove into their budding feelings. Mills did a wonderful job at crafting a world that keeps the readers actively involved in the plot. The element of the missing babies tugged at my heartstrings. I could not imagine how awful it would feel to have your baby stolen from you when the baby was under three months old. Overall, Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills has some unique, yet original plot ideas; however, the romance was not what I expected. More backstory that leads to the growing romance.

I received a complimentary copy of Facing the Enemy by DiAnn Mills from Tyndale Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

This one drew me in right from the start with Risa's reunion with her brother... and I found myself surprised at just how quickly the action began... in a way I admittedly didn't see coming at that moment. What a way to start a story! There was a LOT going on in this book. At first, it seemed like there were multiple stories going and I questioned how it all was going to tie together... but little by little more was revealed to make it all come together and make sense in the end. Dealing with babies being kidnapped, this was definitely one that I found harder for me to read as a mom. It's certainly not a lighthearted topic, that's for sure! There was also a brief mention of suicide. While I had to step away a few times, I thought the story was so well done and it kept me intrigued and wondering what was going to happen next. There were some really great mentions of faith in this story, and I felt like that really helped to balance the tougher topics. There is definitely a good deal of romance in the mix as well, which I loved... but I definitely felt like the suspense was the star of this book.

If you enjoy Christian suspense, this is certainly one worth checking out.

Goodreads Giveaway Physical Book Win

Stars 2.5-3

I found the crime storyline too serious to be written in such a simple fashion. I went into this thinking adult Christian and feel like I read middle grade to young adult.

My biggest issue was while investigating an adoptive baby ring two investigators were longingly thinking of each other. While I like the simplicity, the language, and the grown up atmosphere, it felt childish and crass.

If I recommended I would give a heads up on appropriate work/personal relationships, and a soft reminder that this is a work of fiction bringing light to a serious problem.

I appreciate the GoodReads Giveaway Program and will donate the book.

Better than I originally expected. It read a little like a soap opera but not necessarily in a bad way. The budding romance kept the romance girly in me content while still being a strong mystery. This would be a good long weekend away read.

Having personal connections to law enforcement is making it more difficult to read these kind of books. There are a lot of procedural issues that trip me up because things just don’t happen in the real world the way they’re written in novels.
