In the last year before I retire in June looking through this anniversary edition and seeing a plan at the end of the book for reading the whoooooollllllleeeee Bible in 100 days I thought to myself, myself, I thought lets invite the church bible study groups to join me in this marathon reading.

Full Disclosure: I started in November because frankly I thought to myself, myself, I thought, there is no way I'm going to complete this I need to give myself a little leeway as well as people who might want to join me.

Two years into my ministry the denomination (United Methodist) came out with this intensive bible study DISCIPLE a 34 week chore in which we took hostages. There was a bit of a Ponzi scheme involved in that people who completed the class could then be teachers of other classes - the promise being that the whole church and others would all have done DISCIPLE in a few years. The class involved a private reading of scripture and materials of 30 minutes a day/6 days a week and a 2 1/2 hour class with the group also every week. My suspicion was that many in the class frequently hadn't done the reading.

This 100 day Bible was so much better. Not everyone who attended followed the plan. In fact, some took pride in telling me that they weren't going to follow the plan. Not entirely happy with that but the class was such that people can be honest with me. So there is that. We did gather each week and I lead the group in discussing what the high points were in the reading. This week is the last class.

I only have three or four more classes with these folks. Many United Methodists are going through a standard diet of Adam Hamilton Studies - so Eugene Peterson ends up being a refreshing break. We're going to spend the remaining weeks before my retirement (end of June) reading his 'Eat This Book: A Conversation in the Art of Spiritual Reading.

I wish I'd been doing this 100 Day Bible Study earlier in my career. I am frankly somewhat chagrined when I realize that many of my people; good church goers don't know (what I consider) basic content from the Bible. Not sure, the 100 Day Bible Study will do it . . . but then.

Also confession time. Close to the end of this study I behaved in rather unchristian fashion towards a few individuals within the community. It plagued me, and my conscience got the better of me. Reading through the letters in the New Testament Message version convicted me. I confessed my sin to those involved. One told me a confession wasn't necessary. I still feel it was. Another thanked me. The error was small; it grew a lot smaller after the confession. What is more I no longer felt like a hypocrite - but rather a child of God, and a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Highly recommend this book . . . I feel like it would do more than DISCIPLE; as it would start a lifetime of study for those who just began reading the Bible.
