COLOSSAL ISSUE #700! FANTASTIC FOUR #7 is also FANTASTIC FOUR #700, which means we're ABSOLUTELY going huge. It's an over-sized spectacular as the Fantastic Four reach their new home - not knowing that a mysterious threat has made it there first! As their knowledge of LANGUAGE ITSELF begins to melt from their minds, the Four are in disarray as their existence hangs in the balance... ...and the greatest villain of all time finally seals their DOOM.
First Doom destroys the Four’s language and then he tries to undo Reed’s greatest mistake and fails over and over. However unlike a regular person who learns from his mistakes, Doom chooses to do the most diabolical thing imaginable. Prevent himself from even attempting to make the mistake in the first place and proving, once again, that Doom is his own worst enemy. What better way to celebrate 700 issues with a great story and great art.
North has been building a great story with this series and issue #7 is one of the first big payoffs. Doom tries to undo Reed’s sacrifice and fails time and again. Doom’s explanation to himself — that his future selves have failed him by not using time travel to optimize their pasts — is such a good moment. The contrast between Doom/Reed is effective and clear but subtly developed.
North has been doing some great things at the single-issue level too. Each issue has some effect or conceit that works perfectly and makes the single issue distinct from the overall story. This issue’s trick, with the FF slowly losing more and more of their language until all they can say is ‘doom,’ is so clever.
I wasn’t sure about this book at its launch because the opening story was a bit choppy, but I’m on board now. We’re building to an even bigger payoff, I’d hope, when the FF kids are returned from their temporal sojourn.

It had been a while since I read a FF comic book, and this was great to come back to the series. I liked a lot the context of the story, with the characters placed in Aunt Petunia's rural house. Everything seems mundane and quiet until some sort of mistery starts affecting the expression capacity of our heroes. After a few pages we found that behind this is, of course, Dr. Doom, who has deployed an original and peculiar plan to defeat their enemies. Every character is very well defined in terms of both writing and visual appearance. It is very good to see Sue being treated as probably the most resourceful and powerful character of the group.
Heard a lot of good things about this recent Fantastic Four run by Ryan North which consists of largely stand alone stories you can jump into anytime.
The writing suits the core heroes and arch foe Dr. Doom extremely well. The book lets the character’s handle situations with their quick thinking, really showcasing how they approach solving seemingly impossible situations.
Enjoyed this a lot and look forward to reading more.
It's been a while since I last read this series, but I'm looking forward to getting back into it, and this issue just reminded why it is so good. This was very well written with fun art, and it has to be mentioned that North is doing a great job managing so many characters and the family dynamic. It's light-hearted, it's fun, it's sincere, and I look forward to reading more.
This issue was a great showcase on the core elements of what make Dr. Doom, Dr. Doom.
700 issues of Fantastic Four and I have probably only read less than half of it.
For this extra-sized anniversary issue, we get the return of Doctor Doom to its pages, and being the perfectionist egoist he is, takes over the narrative of the issue, seeing himself as the main protagonist. For all intents and purposes, he's the fifth member of the Four.
Between this and Venom #25, it’s becoming overwhelmingly clear that whenever Dr. Doom gets his own spotlight issue, it’s gonna slap. Seriously, Marvel, give this guy his own solo book already!
