Murder in the Mix #1

Cutie Pies and Deadly Lies

Rate this book
A HILARIOUS cozy mystery from the New York Times bestselling author Addison Moore

My name is Lottie Lemon and I see dead people.Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety. And for some reason those sweet, fluffy albeit paranormal cuties always seem to act as a not-so-great harbinger of deadly things to come for their previous owner. So when I saw that sweet orange tabby twirling around my landlord’s ankles, I figured Merilee was in for trouble. Personally, I was hoping for a skinned knee—what I got was a top spot in an open homicide investigation. Throw in a hot judge and an ornery detective that oozes testosterone and that pretty much sums up my life right about now. Have I mentioned how cute that detective is?

Lottie Lemon has a bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which is always a harbinger for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders and her insatiable thirst for justice and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Living in the small town of Honey Hollow can be murder.

Cutie Pies and Deadly Lies is book one in the Murder in the Mix series by Addison Moore. It’s a cute fun cozy mystery. It’s half romance, half murder mystery, with a dab of paranormal.

This is my first experience with Addison Moore. I grabbed this book; because it was free, the cover was attractive, and I liked that our lead Lottie can see dead pets. A little paranormal in my cozy mysteries is always something I enjoy.

The writing was good. The author is very descriptive and at times that became to much. Some of the sentences ended up being long and that distracted me a little.

As for our lead Lottie Lemon, that name LOL, can see dead pets; which are harbingers for ominous things to come. I enjoyed Lottie. She’s funny, quirky, and the paranormal twist on her seeing dead pets was a fun added bonus. The only down side to Lottie was that every man she runs into she goes off in her head on how cute or sexy they are. That type of thinking takes away from the story and can be too much, at least for me.

I did enjoy the secondary characters. Getting to know her friends and the other citizens of Honey Hollow.

The mystery was well done. It had enough clues and suspects to consider. There were a few twists and turns and the ending was a surprise.

Cutie Pies and Deadly Lies was a cute fun cozy mystery read. I enjoyed it and plan to pick up the next book.

When I picked this book I was looking for a light hearted read. If you like this type of book I'm sure it would be a 5 star for you. It's a silly half romance, half very, very silly murder mystery with characters that seem straight out the bible belt and a main character who oddly sees dead pets. Only this occurs so briefly I was totally confused why it was even part of the story line. Left me feeling like perhaps this is entirely my problem and that I'm too jaded for such an innocent book with not one curse word in sight.

I couldn't put this book down! Finished it in one day! It's the book equivalent to lay's potato chips. You can't stop with one page!

I absolutely loved it. And this being my first book by Addison Moore will not be my last.

Oh what fluff, fluff, derivatively fluffledy-fluff.

I loved it.

Because?

Ghost cats.

And some other elements.

But, mainly?

Ghost cats.

Very pleased with this free read! Looking forward to following Lottie Lemon down more of her paths.

(2.5 stars) -

The story is clearly intended to be fluffy fun, which I was in the mood for. It has a good premise & the writing is fairly engaging. It has a lot going for it, but at times it just seemed to be trying too hard.

A meet cute at the beginning ended up as a meet cringe. The overdone physical humor was topped with the heroine not knowing when to shut up & it was cringeworthy.

More than once I felt embarrassed for, rather than amused by, her. That's not much fun.

When another character who is a virtual stranger claims her as his alibi of sorts, it makes no sense that she would go along with it, even if he was attractive.

Frankly, the heroine came across as a ditz. I can be sympathetic to such a person, but they tend to be fairly flat main characters & I can't identify with a lead like that. And I don't want to when they make me feel embarrassed for them.

Despite that, I didn't dislike the story - the mystery itself was handled adroitly, and the conclusion was well done - but the main characters needed a little more depth.

Clean romance level: passionate kisses, suggestive language & mention of body parts but nothing overly graphic (on par with a PG-13 rating)

Good

New series for me. Lemon doesn't see dead people, she sees dead pets. The book starts out moving and never stops. Lemon has to prove that she didn't kill her ex landlord.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I enjoyed meeting Lottie, I thought she was very funny and quirky. I also enjoyed getting to know her friends and other citizens from Honey Hollow. I liked the fact that the book has a paranormal twist, I just wish there had been more of that.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there, watching all the action take place and listening in on conversations. I felt like many of the sentences were too long and that distracted me at the beginning. Farther in the book I did not really notice it, maybe because I was so wrapped up in the story. That is only my opinion and other readers might not have noticed or cared. I thought there was a lot of humor in this book and I found myself laughing a lot.

The mystery was well plotted and had enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. There were twists and turns and red herrings thrown in, and the ending really surprised me. I did not suspect the real culprit and I like when that happens.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I will definitely read the next book in this series to see what kind of trouble Lottie is going to get into next.

A fun start to the series. Lottie is an interesting character, but I don't care for the slight love triangle - not necessary and hopefully not a part of the series for long. I don't see how Lottie seeing the dead pet helps, but maybe in future books it'll become more clear? The setting was cute and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Very descriptive work!

I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. The author tends to go overboard at times describing scenes or characters, but I skimmed thru when it for too exhausting! I will read more of her work. I like Lottie and her feisty nature!

Who doesn't like Apple pie

A very interesting book. A baker who really enjoys baking pies. Just throw in a murder and bakery all of her own.

It was a cute story, but in my opinion, poorly told. When Lottie feels that Tempest doesn't think she can competently keep herself safe, that is because she can't. She is air-headed and walks into things without giving them a logical thought.
And the biggest faux pas was Merilee's murder. Merilee was stabbed 7 times. Stabbing requires close contact, to say the least. Therefore, whoever stabbed her had to be covered with blood splatter. Now Mora may have gone to the restroom, came out and purportedly found her sister. As we know, she is the one who stabbed Merilee, she had to be covered in blood and there is no way she could have cleaned up in the restroom, unless she was carrying another set of clothes, which I clearly doubt, as it was not premeditated. And, with Lottie standing at the scene, blood free, I cannot see how anyone could accuse her of the stabbing.
It is called logic. Something Ms. Moore might try to use when writing her books.
I doubt I will read any more of this series, or any other that are written by Ms. Moore, as she does not seem to put any effort into realism, which is important even when you are writing fiction.

Lottie Lemon, abandoned as a baby in a firestation, has not had it easy in her life. Her main stay has been the kitchen baking luscious treats. When her stay in New York ends up in disaster, she comes back to Honey Hollow in Vermont, where she grew up to recover.

She finds herself in a lawsuit with her landladies and things go from bad to worse, especially when she stumbles over a dead body in the apple orchard at the local farm.

She must clear her name, but the pesky Noah Fox is determined to keep her safe whether she wants it or not.

There are a couple of hilarious scenes in the book, that had me in tears I was laughing so hard, which gave it a 4 until the very end where it became very preachy about Lottie and her future. Book would have remained a 4 if they had cut the last chapter. However, I will read on as this was the first in the series.

Not my cup of tea at all. The romance was cheesy, the humor embarrassing and the whole "seeing dead pets" thing which made me want to read the book in the first place was only really mentioned a few times.

This is a great start to a new series. Lottie Lemon loves to bake and is in charge of baking cutie apple pies for the big Apple Festival when she goes to see the man in charge she comes across a dead body of the woman who with her sister had just evicted her.

The characters in this book are really good I really like Lottie and Noah her love interest and I also like Noah's step brother Everett. My only complaint about the characters were there were too many and not all of them were developed enough like Lottie's sister and best friend.

The story line was good even though I guessed the murderer fairly early on the book was well written and had a lot of background information that you need for a new series. A really good easy read.

MC is a bit boy-crazy for my taste, but I liked it.

** Update. Gave up on this series a few years ago because it didn't have an audio version. Now Addison has used virtual voice to narrate these so I will pick it back up.

The paranormal part, which is a significant part of the description, is hardly a significant part of the book. The writing, at times, was ... too busy. It is also described as a funny book. Um, I didn't laugh through this book. It is light-hearted but I found myself skipping paragraphs.

This may have been great if the protagonist had a luck of common sense, between being hateful for no reason and lying to the cops about someone you've known less than 30minutes... I just can't.

Lottie, a talented baker who sees ghosts of animals by their previous owner. Essentially determines they'll be dead soon. 🙂 A gift or a curse? 🙃

Surprise surprise, she sees a ghost cat by her landlords feet. Ends up dead and found by the one and only Lottie Lemon.

Since she's the number one suspect of course she has to clear her name.

This is a completely new and fresh book from the lovely Addison Moore and I was excited to get my hands on it. I love it when Addison ventures into something different, this time we have a rom-com with a bit of mystery… the last book of Addison’s I read which had a mystery too I really did enjoy it, she knows how to go ahead and grip her audience and just reel you in. I was hooked from page one, but then again the cover just worked so perfectly. I love mystery books with a hint of romance, I find them really interesting as they aren’t like your other romance books and not exactly in your face. This is a completely different style to what Addison normally writes and I seriously can’t wait for the next one. This is the perfect book to pick up and just get cozy with on a warm fall’s day.

Lottie Lemon didn’t exactly have the best start in life, within a few hours of being born she was left abandoned, but luckily this amazing firefighter found her and took her home and brought her up as his own….
Fast forward years later and you get to see that Lottie has grown into such an amazing person, she looks to bake and everyone can’t help but get enough of her pies. However, she’s been harbouring a secret that only one person knows about and she plans on keeping it that way. This secret she is keeping has such a huge impact on her life, but little did she realise that one day it could get her in trouble and land her in the middle of a police investigation…..

Addison Moore delivers a heartfelt romance smack dab in the middle of a murder mystery where a sassy female becomes the prime suspect in the investigation and refuses to give up until she's cleared her name. Lottie Lemon is a small town baker whose specialties lie in her famous caramel apple pies cleverly nicknamed "cutie pies." When Lottie literally stumbles over a dead body she all of a sudden becomes numero uno on the suspect list due to previous bad blood between her and the victim. In the midst of clearing her name, she meets Noah Fox, the sexy new-to-town private investigator who suggests posing as her boyfriend while he attempts to help solve this homicide. But as Lottie gets closer to the truth, her life seems to be in danger. Can she solve this whodunnit before she becomes the next victim?

Lottie Lemon sees dead animals. When she does see them something bad is going to happen. Lottie’s landlords ( two sisters ) take her to court we meet Mr Sexy. Once she is evicted from her apartment she tends to her baking. When she finds a dead body things point to her.

Noah and PI who wants to help Lottie plays as her boyfriend. She want to figure out what is going on to clear her name. She will do what she wants to make that happen.

Can Noah help? What about Mr Sexy?

A great beginning to a funny and quirky series. Lottie is fun to read about and get to know. Noah and Mr Sexy are both interesting and causing issues. There are a lot of characters but you shouldn’t get lost. The story has some twists and sometimes you might miss the “mystery”. Vermont is a nice setting for this series. I already have book 2 and can’t wait to get started.

More romantic entanglements than mystery

This is a hard one because as much as I enjoyed the murder mystery, and the idea that Lottie sees ghostly pets that foreshadow bad luck, the story was hijacked by the romantic triangle between Lottie and the two guys. That became the main focus of the story and I wasn’t expecting that. Yes, we still followed the mystery aspect as Lottie tried to uncover clues and generally investigated her own case, but it was very relationship centric (including info about her past relationships) which I wasn’t that enthused about. That information could have been conveyed in snippets in future books, not dumped into the introductory story.

First of all , I wasn't so sure about this book. I was a little hesitant just a tad. The whole seeing dead pets I thought was a little creepy. But once I started this book. It wasn't so bad. So I'm happy I gave this book a try. I absolutely loved Lottie, how she stuck to her convictions especially with Noah. And did her things her way. I just loved everything, her passion for baking. I just love a good murder mystery and a some humor too was golden. This book was such a fast pace read that I read it one day. I'll definitely read more of this series. Thanks Addison for making fall in love with Honey Hollow. 💜
