In The Author’s Walk by Dr. Judith Biles, aspiring writers will find a treasure trove of insights and practical advice for navigating the challenging journey of authorship. Dr. Biles, a seasoned publishing and book marketing expert with 43 titles to her credit, offers an authoritative voice in the literary world. Her extensive experience, having worked with numerous authors to achieve publishing success, lends credibility to her guidance.
Dr. Biles engages her readers directly, delivering advice on initiating their writing journey and identifying their unique path. The book stands out for its practical, step-by-step approach, pinpointing common obstacles writers encounter and offering strategies to surmount these hurdles. Covering a comprehensive range of topics, from the inception of a story idea through the writing process, managing distractions, responding to criticism, and ultimately, marketing the finished book, Dr. Biles demystifies the author’s journey. Her personal narrative of entering the publishing arena serves as an inspirational testament, encouraging writers with the message that if she could achieve success, so can they. This book struck a chord with me, an aspiring author, particularly in treating what Dr. Biles terms “Author Fatigue Syndrome.” She warns against the pitfalls of striving for perfection, advocating instead for writing from a place of passion and understanding one’s audience.
The Author’s Walk is an indispensable resource covering everything from the genesis of an idea to the practicalities of marketing. It is an ideal guide for budding and established writers seeking direction. The book’s succinct and accessible style makes it a recommended read for anyone contemplating the start of their writing journey.
One, in the words of Dragnet’s Detective Jack Webb is: “Just the facts, ma’am.” The other type of how to book is a hold your hand through the process, and pat it occasionally to make certain you’re not overwhelmed and are still paying attention.
I’ve read both types. Both types have their place.
The Author’s Walk is a hold you hand type book.
It is sweet, the wordsmithing is well done - but if you want the facts - this book is not for you. If you’re looking for something quick that operates like an instruction manual - this book is not for you.
If you’re intimidated and need someone who is loving and caring to walk you through the book making process - this book is for you. The author Judith Briles is known as the Book Shepard for a reason and from the way she writes - she’s excellent at her chosen profession.
If you want to be an author and write in the style of wholesome inspirationals like the Hallmark Channel - this book is for you.
But if you want something a little more Debbie Macomber - and less Jack Webb this book is for you and will reassure you completely as it lays out the realities that authors will face as they publish for the first time.
I met Judith several years ago at a book fair where she talked to authors about her company's services. However, at the time, I was only writing short stories and was not interested. She very kindly gave me a free copy of her book, SHOW ME ABOUT BOOK PUBLISHING.
Although the book is low on tricks and techniques, it is a good book for a new writer because she talks about getting comfortable as a writer. This includes your 'voice' (which she defines) and how to work. Her bottom line is that you should read what other writers have written about their methods and then find what works for you.
It is good for new writers and published authors who have hit a slump.
I have had the pleasure of hearing Judith speak a couple of times over the years, and when I sat down to read this book, it was just as if I was sitting down with her. I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has the desire or the dream to become a writer, an author, or even a published author.
Quick read and I loved Judith’s humor! She offers some great advice on getting started with your journey to write a book! I hoped for a bit more of a roadmap in book planning but was a great! Will definitely read her book on publishing too!
This book is an easy read yet packed full of motivating, helpful guidance. The author is a master at her art and leads you gentle down the path to writing.
