The next heartwarming instalment of the Timber Girls Series. Perfect for fans of Elaine Everest and Pam Howes.
Trixie and her fellow lumberjills are back in Scotland, newly stationed at the MacKay estate. When they arrive, they are shocked to find the place dilapidated and neglected and the taciturn and secretive Noah MacKay not at all happy to be meeting them.
It quickly becomes apparent that MacKay was expecting men from the forestry commission to take charge, rather than four young women. Trixie, Jo, Hen and Vi decide he needs to be proven wrong - after all, don't they have stamina, skill and strength?
But as the girls work to prove their worth, secrets from their own pasts threaten to follow them to Sutherland.
Not a bad little story. The author had obviously researched forestry and the Women's Timber Corps. The problem was it seemed that she wanted to inform the reader of her findings and instead of blending it into the story, at times it read as a factual piece. Almost too much information.
I know Scotland is known for its wet and cold climate but there were very few days in the story when it wasn't raining. 'The rain was lashing down' was a phrase used often and too much. It was all a bit over-descriptive at times. 'Dream a little dream' was constantly on the radio which I know the author wanted to bring into the story, but I thought it a bit odd with it being played so much..
The ending completely let it down, it was so abrupt. Without giving away spoilers, the final couple of pages told us very little. I felt like another chapter could have wrapped it all up very nicely. Sorry but it has to be only three stars.
The second book in the Timber Girls series. The story follows the four Lumberjills as they go out in their first assignment following their training. An easy, feel good read.
It was so nice to catch up with the Lumberjills once again. Each one of the girls have their own story and you can get into their characters. The book as been left open so hopefully another book to come. A recommended read from Rosie Archer once again.
