Fed up with studying paleontology from the inside of a classroom, students Alexander Conway and Abasi Hamisi venture into Poland’s Białowieża Forest hoping to uncover Paleolithic relics.

After entering a narrow crawlspace deep in the forest, which they barely escape with their lives, they emerge in another world—a version of Earth where Homo sapiens never emigrated from Africa and subsequently died out. Instead, this world is ruled by two alternate hominid industrialized Neanderthals and their adversaries, the equally advanced Denisovans.

Upon being captured and brought to a Neanderthal mine-cum-prison, Alexander and Abasi are subjected to extended experimentation with no end in sight. Separated from his friend, and with the help of a young Neanderthal, Abasi must find Alexander and escape before they are lost forever in this alternate reality.

Would have given it 4.5 if half stars were an option. I thought it was great! I was really intrigued by the description, so when I heard about this book, it immediately went on my TBR. The only thing I didn't really like was that the "letter after the fact" format took a little bit of the tension out of the end for me, although thought the letters as a framing device was well executed and I wasn't aware that I was reading a letter the whole time, which I think would have weighed the story down/would have become annoying. I thought it was a unique approach to have the characters from our world never learn more than a few words of the Neanderthal language and not be able to communicate with them, I liked that. It would have been cool to see a little more of the "regular" life in the city in the second half before the war came, but that might have screwed up the pacing. The ending with the parallels between the world was a nice close, left you thinking. Overall, it was an interesting "what-if" type of story that I really enjoyed.

Unexpected story that really makes you think

Not what I was expecting at all. Very thought provoking story that underlines the impact of every decision ever made. Puts you in the position of questioning a lot of moral dilemmas.
