Claire Vale lives in a small town outside London. When she's not thigh-deep in real life, you'll find her head-and-heart-deep in the tangled lives of her characters.
It seems to me that writing an original dystopian series is getting harder and harder to do. Yes this story has what appears to be the typical cold as ice hot guy and stubborn girl who will eventually fall in love but that's okay when it's accompanied by a captivating storyline. This book accomplishes that. Looking forward to the next one.
The Duty - Claire Vale 4/5 Stars 7/10 *Spoilers for The Offered?*
I really, really liked this! This wasn’t anything groundbreaking, nothing I fell head-over-heals in love with, but rather something that pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go as soon as I saw it. Claire Vale is reliable when it comes to that, she hits that mark for me perfectly. It was so enjoyable I couldn’t put it down and it reads like water, she has this writing style that I love and makes the story flow. I feel like this is rather character-driven. Georga is an interesting and stubborn young woman, sometimes a bit too, rash, impulsive, doing some things she shouldn’t be doing without thinking about consequences. Nevertheless I overall liked her character. Sometimes I wanted to tell her No, please God no, but oh well. She was also clever and sly about things. I really overall liked her. Roman West reminded me of Kane. Daniel was blond like Gabriel. Especially after finding out about Amelie, I saw the parallels. With the world-building and what might be out there, even with Jenna’s character, I saw even more of them. She remined me of someone else from Tithe. I don’t mind. I overall liked Roman, too. I don’t know much about him though, funnily enough. I hope for the next book to clear this out more. His actions in the end… I want to know more. Georga’s friend Jessie was someone I found I liked. Brenda was complicated, but not as much as the story went along. At least how I felt about her. Already being able to see how the women of this world do, as in socially, it’s quite interesting. Jessie and Georga gossiping was amusing to read, I liked it lmao. The ending for this book makes me want to read the next one now. The betrayal. Is it real? I’m excited to find out. I find I always enjoy Claire Vale’s books overall, I give this one 4/5 Stars, and a 7/10! Read from 07.01.2025 to the 08.01.2025. Review written 08.01.2025 (European dates used)
This girl Georgia is a real stupid spoiled brat. Instead of following her sisterhood which includes her mother she does things on her own and endangers everyone.i like the story, but I hope she can learn something.
This book has it all. Angst, suspense, intrigue, betrayal and romance. Georga has been told that there is a fertility plauge. She has never questioned it, until her own plans went up in smoke. She may have been making the best of her situation, but she turns to rebellion after her friend rejects the plan society has mapped out for them. Her own life plans shift trajectory. The depth of the main character had me hooked. Her growth was a compelling read. She starts to question her society and its rules. She’s introduced to a secret society of sisterhood and given risky assignments for their cause. But how far is too far and how much is she willing to risk?
Their government has a secret underbelly, but so does the outfit she joined to subvert them. There are clear cut areas, only murky gray. Who can she trust? And what’s the “right” path? These book topics reflect some of our current events: laws making individuals 2nd class citizens. Personal liberties being taken away. One of the reasons why I love dystopian settings- is that is compels you to think, to stop and consider our own surroundings. In the beginning, Georga thought she met her perfect match, someone who truly sees her, however the choice is out of her hands, and she takes the the path forced upon her. The dystopian world and it’s rules and constraints make for a suspenseful read. I was terrified for her! I need book to now!! There was quite a cliff hanger and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
I was intrigued by the idea behind this story, but felt like it fell kind of flat in the end. The payout wasn't as good as the buildup promised. We had an opportunity for a rebellion and espionage and secret society bonds. But all of that was pushed to the side for an insufferable FMC that acts like a spoiled brat--just like the MMC calls her.
I did enjoy the romance aspect and felt the slow burn was more realistic in regards to the tone of the story. Two people forced to marry for potential procreation don't magically fall in love overnight, and it was nice change of pace to see them at odds.
Overall, it was an okay read, but not overly thrilling. I'll be reading the next because it's on KU, but not a favorite. 3.5
This book was amazing!!! I love sytopian stories, and this captured my interest so fast. I look forward reading the next book. Can't wait to see wth happened now that georga has been apprehended for trying to sneak behind Roman's back. I'm hoping Roman is just trying to teach her a lesson and is not serious. Because this ending left with a wtf moment.
This book was so so so so good! Well written, great editing (2 minor mistakes,). The story line is intense. This is a great book suitable for all ages. Ends on a cliffhanger which I totally don't mind as long as I can start reading right away. Speaking of which....
It's been a while since a book got me hooked from the beginning & I can't wait to read the next one. So many twists in the plot. Georga is quite the character, very curious. And you know what they say...curiosity killed the cat. Hopefully she finds her way out.
I actually thought this was amazing. I NEVER feel that was about books I read for free from kindle unlimited. There are a few typos, but nothing major. I was super bummed that the next book is pre order, I wanted to read it immediately 😂
It's not often that I hate a main character but wow I sure do. I read a lot of YA fiction, and I can confidently say that Georga is an annoying brat with the maturity of a 13 year old. However, the story itself is good so I will read the second one with very low expectations.
A dystopian society where all who live behind its wall believe all they are told. Georgia is arranged a marriage as are all the teens at age 18. She chooses to accept the marriage offer of a boy she doesn’t know at all, Roman, who has a very secret past, it seems.
Slow start to the story, but a great plot. Good character profiles and well written. This was full of surprises. Couldn’t put it down. And cannot wait to read the next in the series.
That was such a good ending, Amazing book! I read the whole book in one day....it's way past my bedtime. I am making myself not start the second one till tomorrow lol
The idea was similar to the handmaid's tale and how women's statuses became devalued under authoritarian rules with limited resources. The FMC is curious and suspicious, but honestly could be a bit smarter. The outcome is uncertain, this is the best type of engrossing.
