People say that I’m cold, dangerous and even soulless at times. They’re right. I care about one thing my club. I don’t want or need anything else. I do what or who I want when I want. To fall for a woman, it shows weakness, it brings complications and it gives my enemies a target. I am feared, I am hated and I will make sure it stays that way. Hell, I am the president of the Black Hearts MC. I screw freely and I live without fear as I ride with the devil and no one is going to change that.
STAR
My life’s motto has always been self preservation. I keep the defensive walls up to survive and fight each day. There is no such thing as live, laugh, love. Not in my world, anyway. I don’t “live” my life, I survive it and I don’t laugh unless it’s ironically. As for love, well it doesn’t exist, it’s a myth, a tool people use to manipulate others into getting what they need, what they want. I live to survive and I survive to live. I rely on one person, me. I will never want or need anyone else.
A brutal, raw and broken love story about a soulless man meeting a fractured girl. Fighting each other, their own desires and fighting to survive an unknown enemy.
A dark MC romance not recommended for persons under 18.
I'm a self published author. I fell in love with reading as an adult, when I found the romance genre. I immediately got sucked into the stories and fell in love. The romcom, the dark, the Suspense, all of them!
I struggled a lot with reading and writing when I was younger. Being dyslexic made it extremely hard for me, but I loved writing stories even then.
I wrote Rise Above in secret too scared and embarrassed that it wasn't good enough, that people would laugh at it, at me. My husband pushed me to take the leap. So I did. Not having an editor to start with and a friend making my cover it scary jumping into a world your unsure of what to do. Learning as I go. Its the best decision I ever made. The response was amazing. I am currently working on the rest of the series. And plan on writing until I run out of words. I love it and one thing I've learnt is you only live once and you should to do what you love and what makes you happy. I hope that people enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy writing them.
Personally cannot wrap my head around that she finds him with someone else in the apartment she lived in, then he follows afterwards and declares that he can’t see her with anyone else and then they become “exclusive” so to speak?
Personally I don’t care about the MMC being with people prior to the MMC, everyone has pasts but cannot stand the man being with another woman after he decides he wants the MMC. But hey that’s just me🤷🏻♀️ I will continue with the series, but this book just wasn’t a favourite of mine
Star is giving up on life when she meets a woman who offers her a job as a stripper at a biker club. She meets Ghost and the sparks fly. They are both feisty souls so theres a lot of snark. About halfway through Star walks in on Ghost having sex with a stripper. It could have been angst but it wasn’t. Star says they weren’t a couple so it meant nothing. Her feelings were hurt and Ghost knows it. So he jumps in the truck with her and on the ride back to the MCC she forgives him.. and they decide to be a couple. Hmm that was stupid quick and made you feel nothing. The first half was a better read. The last half I skimmed a lot to the hea. Another problem is this author is writing an American biker book and the language is definitely UK lingo— I was Stood at the bar / He was sat in the chair— this screams British to me not hardcore American biker. At least they weren’t taking tea like in one book I read set in North Florida. I laughed so hard at that one! That’s my stomping grounds and ain’t no bikers around here taking tea🤣

Not even the patron saint of editing could help this book - I have never seen such misguided attempts at sentence structure and mixing of tenses.
If you like when the MMC never asks for consent, is sexist, and blames his lack of experience in love for being a verbally and emotionally abusive asshole, then this book is for you. Bonus points if you like when the FMC, instead of going to therapy and working on herself, chooses to fall in love with said verbally and emotionally abusive asshole.
Thoughts: Star IMMEDIATELY forgives Ghost in the end. Like one sentence she’s all NO I’m not giving in. Then the next, she is begging for him to kiss her and all is forgiven. The way the bikers treat women. Calling them bit(hes all the time but specifically they, including Ghost, call Star a bit(h all the time. Also, to me, this book contains cheating. Once the main characters meet, if they have relations with other people… cheating! So personally, I immediately take 2 stars off. Leaving only 3 stars tops, the ending took another because of how forced it was.
Star (31) has had a dark, traumatizing past (abu$ed, SA’d, homeless) and is approached by Sunny to join the Black Velvet exotic club. Star is hesitant at first but agrees, the only other option she had was to end it all. Ghost (39) is the president of the Black Velvet MC. They run pew pews and dr%gs. Ghost’s trauma is that his mama was bipolar and unalived herself. He was her caregiver. Cash’s (one of the brothers) mom, Queenie, took Ghost in and raised him as her own. Ghost sees Star in the club and is in love but doesn’t know how to process his feelings. He and Star have a push pull relationship. She is SA’d outside of the club but she was knocked out and luckily (her words) doesn’t remember. She then tries to escape the MC compound and breaks her ankle. Ghost and her kiss but he starts to feel emotions and backs up and deflects saying he doesn’t like “tainted goods”. Sir!!!! He does apologize later but in a round about non specific way and Star gets over it. When she is tried of being bored, she goes to the club to get some of her stuff (she was staying above the club) she finds Ghost in her bed with another dancer. Ghost chases after her (inner monologue says he was trying to get her out of his mind 😒🙄😒). Star immediately says if we do this relationship stuff I won’t share! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 The whole club has accepted her and thinks of her as one of them. She becomes close with some members. One being Rage who doesn’t really take to anyone. Then in order to catch a bad guy, the club asks Star to lure them to keep them busy til they get there. Ghost says mean horrible things to her (only to make her think he doesn’t love her so she is safe). Of course they don’t come in time and she gets s+@bbed. She recovers but is still vehemently set on leaving. She is walking out of the gate at the last 5% of the book clearly inside and outside not wanting to be near Ghost or the club, when Ghost comes out and says he loves her (he says more but I’m paraphrasing) she begs him to kiss her. The end ! 😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒

Star's life has reached the point where she had to make a choice, either die or live. She chose the latter. She had really bad experiences in life so far. She's got this very outgoing personality and is able to talk the hind legs off a donkey. Full on verbal diarrhea.
Ghost is the club prez of the Black Hearts MC. He does not take any nonsense from anyone. Both main characters have been bumping heads with each other and do not always agree with one another. They have a lot of banter happening between them. Star liked to get Casper (her nickname for Ghost) riled up and some of the things she says are really funny.
This was a very good and enjoyable read. Wonderful start of a new series.
This is your typical MC romance with some criminal action and a lot of banter.
The story was alluring but I didn't like the dialogues. They seemed… a bit forced or unnatural and that affected the chemistry of the mcs for me.
The writing was fine, it simply wasn't doing it for me. The book certainly needs proofreading and editing as it has many errors and there is conflicted information about the characters' background ex. Ghost's mother.
Sweet baby Jesus!!! This book has had me in the edge of my seat!! Honest to God!! I wanted to nut punch Ghost on sooooo many occasions!! Star?! Sweet Jesus! That woman has been through more than any human could possibly go through and she is still standing!! Ghost and Star clash from the get-go, her mouth, sass and total lack of fear lights a fire in him! Blimey, what a ride!!! Can't wait for more!!
So I am slightly conflicted with this book. There were bits that I really liked and others where I was just a little bit meh hence the rating.
The plot is good - nothing too out of the ordinary but it did keep me a gripped and I did want to see how it played out. You have turf wars between gangs, as well as the story between the FMC and MMC.
I liked the back story of both the FMC and MMC and I always like to see discussions about previous trauma and how it impacts on lives now.
The main issue is had was I didn’t particularly attach to or like either the FMC (Star) or the MMC (Ghost). I like a strong FMC who gives as good as she gets but I felt like Star lost that a bit as the book goes on and I love a dark, damaged MMC and have no issues with them being morally grey (in fact I love that) but Ghost isn’t that to me, in fact he just isn’t a nice person. He is unpleasant and a bit of a bully to everyone.
What i did love though were the other supporting characters. There is loads of them and actually I wished the book had told me more about them. This is the first in the series so there is an opportunity there to get to know the others in follow up books.
everything you’d expect out of a MC romance, I was looking for a little bit more an emotional break down from the MMC, but otherwise I’ll cruise through this series. Make sure you brush up on the laundry list of TWs before starting ☺️
Ghost is the Book 1 in the Black Hearts MC series. Star was out of money and willing to take any available job when she started a job as a stripper at the BHMC's strip club. Ghost decides pretty much as soon as he sees her, that he wants her and when she is attacked one night after work takes her back to the MC's compound so she can recover and be protected.
What I Liked - Ghost is an asshole, but protects those he cares about - Star keeps moving forward even though her life has been more bad then good - The pacing was good and I want to learn more about other members in the MC - There was a good mix of plot to spice putting it at 3/5 on my spice scale
What Fell Flat - Ghost's actions after Star is staying at the clubhouse - How Ghost treated Star leading up to the final confrontation with the bad guy.
Overall, 3.5/5 stars since I enjoyed it enough to want to read more of the series, but I'm not sure I'll read this specific book in the series again.
Just no. If you put aside the blatant grammatical and spelling errors, you’re still left with a rushed book about a motorcycle club that made me feel like I was reading a knock off wish version of Sons of Anarchy’s first season. Just a brutal read with nothing really going for it.
"Never, and I mean never, did I think a woman could come into my life and cause so much hell and disruptiion. Never did I think a cold, soulless asshole like myself was even capable of love. And yet, here I fucking am," . . I absolutely enjoyed this book, I loved the banter and found family type of MC we had. I really liked how the author kept it more realistic then to make the bikers more fluffy and romantic that I find a lot of MC romances does. I really enjoyed how this book dealt with serious topics but had enough banter in between to break the tension. Now is this the most perfect thing I have read? No. I do feel like there was a lot of trauma dumping on us without the main characters really dealing with it, I think the female character always was sharing but never really got help for it and then Ghost had clearly had problems but we never really got to know why he was the way he was. I think Star had great potential to be a really strong female character I just wish we saw her fighting back a bit more even in between the biker boys. I will say I read this within 2 days I generally couldn't put it down and I found the authors writing really easy to read, I will be continuing this series and I can't wait to check more out from this author.
I am mainly a ‘dark’ book reader and this has some serious triggers (check if you need) for me this was intense in all the right ways. There is no way Ghost, the MMC, should be attractive when he’s such a major walking red flag. Star the FMC is literally the definition of trauma, from her past to everything in between and yet these two are like moth to a flame. This book was so intriguing to see the FMC having been what she had and yet ‘compartmentalise’ to survive, because until she met the Black Hearts and fell for the head of the Biker MC, that’s exactly what her life had been. Survival. The slow burn of the FMC finding family and feeling it ripped from her was so good while watching her grow into the MC like she should have always been there. This was book was raw, triggering, intense, spicy and just so damn good. Highly, highly recommended for all Biker loving, slightly disturbed readers like myself. This didn’t read like a ‘Romance’ biker novel, these were bad men and this was a tough life and yet I’d still say ‘I want in’ for a taste of one of these boys
“You going to kiss me or is the mighty Ghost full of shit?”
This is my first book by this author and I tell you now it won't be my last.
I really enjoyed this book, I loved the back and forth banter between Star and Ghost. I loved how all of his hard edges were softened when it comes to her, the man who swore against giving a woman power over him.
Star is strong, stubborn and not afraid to stand up for herself, even if that means standing up to a big bad biker. As he allows Star further into his heart, we see a different side to Ghost and Ioved his character development.
I love an MC romance, my obsession beginning where I assume most people's did (Jax and Tara in Sons of Anarchy) and L G Campbell sure knows how to write one!
I am so intrigued by the other characters and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Cat’s Stats MMC/FMC- Ghost and Star Genre- MC Romance (hardcore 1%) Length- around 260 pages Heat- 🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋 Series? Y Safety? Oh HELLS no. There are more triggers here than in Ted Nugent’s gun cabinet. Triggers- discussion of or presence of the following: SA, CSA, graphic violence, prostitution, substance abuse, gun running, drug trafficking, language, explicit erotic content, child abuse, misogyny. Tropes- Stripper with a Heart of Gold, Rock Bottom, Club Prez, Enemies to Lovers, Forced Proximity, Little Ol’ Lady Who? Mewsings If you can get past the triggers, this is a good book. The love (and fighting) between the MMC and FMC is intense and very moving. They have a HEA, although the overall storyline continues.
Grammar and editing errors using the wrong tense for words, misspelled words and getting her characters confused. Extremely overdone past of Star, too many bad things happened and she's like, "oh well". I did like that for a part of the book she was actually strong enough to resist him before becoming a cat in heat. Too many sex scenes. Ghost makes her have sex in front of the other members, she doesn't want to but then becomes a doormat and gives in because...orgasms 🙄. No true Alpha male would ever allow other men to see his woman in her pleasure. Lost 2 stars for that. He eventually says some nasty things to her, breaks her heart and she easily forgives him. It would have been much better if she actually did leave him and he had to grovel for her forgiveness.

If I'm honest, this was probably more of a 2.5-2.75 star read.
I can't tell if the grammar was stylistically awful or just not edited well. Even keeping in mind that it's written in British English, it was like like an educated person's guess of how lower income, poorly educated criminals speak and it made it difficult to read.
But ignoring the off putting grammar, the storyline itself was just so ridiculous and unbelievable that I was laughing when I'm pretty sure that's not the author's intent.
Ghost and Star are both incredibly immature and kinda unlikeable anti-heroes. I liked Rage even though at times he seemed like he was oversimplified. Honestly, most of the men in the MC were interesting characters and with a writing style I enjoy more, I'd continue the series.
I’ve not read anything by LG Campbell before but I will be adding to my list of go to authors now. This is not a fluffy read it’s gritty, hard but I laughed too. Every time Ghost suddenly appears & makes Star jump her reflexes make her throw something at him,top that with her sarcasm and rambles and she totally resonates with me but the similarities end there, she is one brave woman. This book is well written, it flows with characters you take to heart. Star and Ghost just gelled, all the brothers have piqued my interest and I want to read their stories, the ending signposts you to another MC series that I have to check out now
I liked the book. There was just something about it that made it not flow. It was sorta choppy and not real descriptive. I've read about people who have crappy lives and it influences their present, but she had like 20 (exaggerating) f*cked up things in her past and she was just "Oh well, no biggie" Just sorta unrealistic. I made it about 50% in and thought about not finishing it, but I VERY rarely do that so I continued. The story plot it what kept me from stopping, I was glad I finished it and will probably try the next book.
What characters!!!! This book is full of them. Out FMC is a gem. So funny, strong, brave. The MMC takes no prisoners. They’re made for each other. This book has everything. It’s sad, gut wrenching, hysterical, sweet.
The mis-speaking nurse scene of just the best. Slight disappointment to the ending but without giving away spoilers I’m hoping it gets dealt with in future books.
A few editing misses. Simple things like ‘their’ instead of ‘they’re’ or ‘me’ instead of ‘my’
This book has lots of MC dark stuff going on. I enjoyed the banter, the brotherhood, the need for a tough exterior. What didn't sit well with me was the extremely over done past of Star. A strong sassy female is definitely a bonus but too much of pain & just pain was over the top. I enjoyed the story more once Ghost & Star got together. Of course the drama that comes as a third act break up comes after that to finish off towards a HEA.
There are a few dark topics but it was so low angst the way it was written.
Star and Ghost
Star starts working at a strip club Ghost owns. He is in an MC. He wants her but she tries to keep a distance. He gets bj from another stripper that Star hates. Star is attacked and raped. Later in the story, after they have developed feelings, she walks in on him and the same stripper having sex on her bed. Immediately afterwards, they get together.

I love the storyline and the complexity of the characters. It’s so easy to get lost in the darkness and oppositely in the safety of the crew. My only issues are the editing, and the lack of sexy details, but it’s an easy read and I’m eager for other installments!
Story is great. Heat between the 2 leads is blazing hot. MC members are diverse and fun. Drawback was that the writing was likely done with a computer voice detection program that could not detect homonyms and proofing wasn't done to correct for the deficit.
Just awesome. Some parts were so laugh out loud funny, I couldn't help laughing. Big bad biker meets, sassy loudmouth heroine. She will melt your heart, and you'll cry for her. Star crawled into the hearts of the MC and their president, and she never left. One fantastic read. Recommended
Definitely know your triggers before reading this book, as this author lays it all out there in her storyline. This is one emotional roller coaster ride, so buckle up and enjoy the ride. Characters are rough around the edges, but loyal to the end. Definitely recommend this book, author and series.
Although a dark book in many ways this was a great read as there were a few fun moments too to break it up. I loved star she owned her bleakness and was totally her self no matter what. Ghost was an arrogant alpha male but totally made up for that in his own way. I’m looking forward to reading more from the black hearts mc x
Brilliant book, just started reading this amazing authors work and now I'm happily admitting I am hooked.
I love ghost and stars relationship and loved how sassy star is even though she has been through enough hell to even make the sanest of woman sad but secretly I'm in love with rage and cannot wait to read about him.
