The Wayhaven Chronicles #2

The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book Two

Rate this book
Two months have passed since the bloody showdown with Murphy. Wayhaven has returned to its peaceful routine, and you’ve returned to your less-than-thrilling job as detective. But with your new role as human liaison to The Agency—an organization that governs the supernatural—things should be far from dull.

Along with the job comes Unit Bravo, the team you are learning to live with on a more permanent basis. And with one of them comes the continuation of feelings that were just beginning to be explored…

But an altogether different presence is rolling into Wayhaven, cloaked in striped tents, blazing lights, and clouds of cotton candy.

Alright, back to me pushing this book into everyone's faces.

Hear me out. Please.
I grew up on Quizilla okay. I LIVE for this kind of content.

You know what an already amazing story needs to be even cooler? A spooky carnival. BAM.
Mystery solving, lore recovering, family bonding, vampire smooching (Depending on the guy. Adam is still playing hard to get.) BUT STILL. IT'S EVERYTHING.

I sound like a junkie and that's because I am. The love I have for this series is infinite and I'll scream it to the world.

Sometimes all a girl wants is to save the day along her vampire BF okay.
That's all I want.

I jumped on this second one as soon as it released back in 2020 and I've replayed it so many times I've lost track.

Just like the first, Mason is aaaaaaaalways my favorite, with Nate in second and Adam in third, and Felix as the best buddy. I haven't tried the love triangle route because I just don't know if I can deal with all the angst and hurt feelings between Nate and Adam, but it does sound fun. 😅

The book definitely gets a bit more into the romance side of things, which I was really excited about. Mason's gets pretty spicy if you let it, Nate's is sweet and a little spicy, and Adam's is as frustratingly slow-burn as you'd expect.

I loved that we got introduced to more supernatural characters, and I had a lot of fun with the story in this one. I mean, Mishka really knows how to throw some tough choices at you. If I had to pick my favorite part, I'd say it was the carnival, especially picking the carousel and fortune teller with Mason.😁

As with the others, I highly recommend this series. Mishka is an amazing writer, and Nai does a great job helping her.

This is my favorite excerpt from this book:

Still Inside the Teller's Tent

---

Mason instantly moves to follow Evie as the tent flaps close behind her.

But the teller calls out before he can.

"You'll trust her," the teller states.

Mason glares back at the woman, more in annoyance than interest.

Her fingers are threaded back into the waters, which ripple slightly as Mason looks at them.

"One day," Sanja continues, "you'll trust her more than you trust yourself."

His focus moves from the teller to where Evie just exited—obviously the person Sanja is talking about. Disbelief causes a frown to form on Mason's brow, but he is still drawn back into the tent a little more.

"What?"

Sanja smiles. "You think what you're starting to feel for her is loyalty. But does it feel the same as it does when you think of the rest of those you are bonded to?"

Mason stiffens…then shakes his head and scoffs. "Does this crap really work on people? Telling them bullshit tales about their 'destiny'?" He swings around to leave.

"You should be careful," Sanja says, her voice echoing around Mason. "A bond like the one you two will share—one that will last an eternity." She hesitates. "If the coming darkness makes you break…she may willingly break with you."

Something in those words has Mason pausing without realising. A shudder of uncertainty makes his muscles tighten.

But he shakes it off with a rumbling growl and storms out of the tent.

Ahhh can I be blamed for having played book 2 even more than book 1? No I can’t, I can’t be blamed for anything. Reading this series takes the control away from me. Just what I want!

The story! The romance! The lore! It’s all evolving!

Here it goes further with getting to know the characters, get involved in missions and learn more about the agency. It’s weird how I don’t really like fantasy books, yet really, really love this. This book fills my brain with no thoughts but Adam/Ava du Mortain and Mason/Morgan (…no lastname for them), and I love it. Please continue rotting my brain further with supernaturals, suspense and romance. I’m here for it.

Decided to give book 2 a try after hearing that it's better than book 1. And to be fair, it is, though only by little. The writing and prose still isn't the best but because the book doesn't spend a lot of time establishing facts and introducing the world (in the very "meh" way it was done in book 1) the plot is easier to pick up. I've only played through it once with a non-binary MC romancing Ava du Mortain. The romance parts were fun and I enjoy the characters themselves, especially Ava and Farah, but the plot and themes itself were nothing too remarkable.

It’s been a few months since the end of the last book and it’s time to see our boys again!!

They are living in Wayhaven now as our supernatural situation has changed. A mysterious disease spreads amongst both humans and supernaturals and it’s time for a date at the carnival.

Other humans called Trappers make things difficult, but we manage, like always.

Mason’s storyline continues to melt my heart 🖤🖤🖤

I completed both the A and M routes, and my favourite by far of the 'emotionally unavailable" character romance options is M. I hate to compare but Buffy the TV series comes to mind often while playing the M route. Does M's character deviate drastically from book one? I don't think so. No spoilers but I was satisfied with Jenkins' explanation for his character arc.

The plot progression is great but I don't think it hits the same as book 1 does, absolutely love the characters though and will keep coming back to this one, 100%.

Sliving for this series.

Good continuation of the first novel; builds upon the established world and its systems, along with its cast of main and side characters. The romance takes a greater presence in this installment then the previous. I find my version is a particular slow burn, I'm curious to see how the dynamics and depictions of romance change based on which you chose to pursue (especially given the love triangle route between Adam and Nate).

I can only speak to Mason's route, one of which I think I'm in the minority of how I am pursuing him. When it comes to Mason, it feels like I am battling the writer and narrative; I can't tell if the way I am trying to keep at bay his casual flings is allowing me to put my stance for a deeper relationship and eventually obtain it, or if my actions are leading me to sabotage the romance. And Hosted Games do not allow for loading, so in order to try a different choice it would require a complete restart. It creates a more stressful experience and hurts chances of replay-ability, especially when you're in the middle of the second book. I'm hoping book 3 will demystify the unintended suspense of not knowing if my choices, which feel accurate to my character's personality and perspective, are actually incompatible with the script that is preferred to be taken.
