While I wasn’t enamoured of the obvious baddy last time, what comes out of her plot line is certainly interesting enough to justify the whole thing. Mostly because it adds yet another wrinkle to the Shiori and Hinako dynamic.
The story as a whole continues to be incredibly melancholy; if it ever does become more hopeful it will rather feel like the sun breaking through the clouds. It is utterly unlike any yuri story I’ve seen (even the recent and phenomenal Monster-Colored Island) in that respect.
When it becomes apparent that Hinako doesn’t taste as delicious to Shiori as originally promised, due to reasons, the look of betrayal in Hinako’s eyes is brutal. Her salvation has disappeared in a flurry of very, very awkward revelations.
I’m keeping it vague because this whole development is very well done and it also underlines how fragile mental health and suicidal ideation really are. The story gave hints that Hinako was improving, but it becomes clear that it was dependent on Shiori promising to devour her and end her life.
If anything, Hinako backslides even worse than before and, while I don’t think the overt horror is especially scary, Shiori’s quiet suggestion that she could keep Hinako alive in a pretty ghastly state is the creepiest thing in the series to date.
And that leads to, truly, the best part of the story. Shiori and Miko, who really is trying her best in a bad situation (her transformation this volume is dynamite), end up on a date and it’s just amazing.
These two are the real pairing that I want from this story, no offence to Hinako or the tragic backstory for all three of them. Shiori and Miko talk so openly and freely, even as they can’t stand one another, that they’re endlessly entertaining.
And all the humour is concentrated here and concentrated hard (the omake with the animal snacks had me rolling). Yet it also has such an honesty about how Shiori sees the world; it might not make the two of them friends, but it might just lead to them understanding one another.
Even when Miko tries to help, it becomes clear that Shiori’s position isn’t because she hasn’t tried. It’s actually because she has. It does potentially set up a scenario where she and Hinako save each other and I’d be incredibly okay with that.
Similarly, I do wish this would get a little more gay with its main cast, but I am never going to complain about what we’re getting. Hinako is a mess for a reason and having the other two goof around helps bring needed levity without undercutting the drama (even if they do rather steal the show).
4 stars - Shiori and Miko spin-off, please? No, seriously though, this continues to be an excellent look at grief and emotional trauma. Sometimes it’s a mood more than a narrative, but I am fond of it either way.
JAJAJA. Mira mejor me callo…
learning about shiori’s past and having a bigger focus on miko and shiori as a duo is the perfect break before the big angst is coming (i love this series)
“but… that mermaid… that’s a really weird promise she made with you.”
“……..?”
“because… if you eat a human who has some of your blood, they won’t taste very good at all.”
helLLO??? what do you mean hinako has shiori’s blood??? what…?????
and omg. ayame??? i wasn’t expecting her to be a monster at all—let alone a monster who was previously human..! when shiori said that ayame had a similar smell like hinako, i just thought that ayame wanted to die too 😭
“when i saw shiori-san’s true form, i had the feeling that i’d seen something like it before…”
and oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh.
“the truth is right now, the smell of your blood is so foul that i can hardly stand it.”
hinako and shiori first meeting each other ten years ago during /that/ trip is just so- oh my gosh… wow. wow, wow, wow… i’m… wow. wow. w o w.
i need more. i’m having so much fun reading these volumes and- aaaaaahhhh… just so good……..
yuri. 4. life. forever.
and i was also right about shiori not wanting to eat hinako. HAH! i knew it.

Holy!!! Oh my lovely Shiori!!! And Hinako, you poor soul. This volume is full of reveals, more questions, and heartache.
“Despite the pain… I couldn’t let myself sink. But then… there was you. Only you—I had faith… you would deliver me my doom and salvation.”—Hinako
And that storyline with Ayama and her son although short was heartbreaking. I hope we get to see her more.
“Oh, how I envy you. Meat. Everything we see before us—the humans. The animals. Every last one. I can only see them as meat for consumption, one and all.”— Shiori
I loved the moment with Shiori and Miko at the end of the volume where they discussed if it was really possible to make bonds with humans even though they as flesh eating monsters inherently see humans as food. It makes me curios to know what secrets Shiori’s past will reveal.
This series continues to do a very excellent job of showing the depths of depression and what it can do to a person. The reveals of this volume really showed that Hinako isn’t doing as well as it appeared, which I appreciated the realism in that. I still find myself getting annoyed with how Shiori and Miko speak about Hinako like she’s a prize to be won and not a person of her own. I’m also still waiting for the Yuri aspect of this to happen. But I would heavily recommend this series and this story as I feel its focus on mental health and suicide idealization to be very well done and important.
I hate Shiori even more. As she said: monsters are nothing but selfish.
So much for melancholy and gloomy ... 😒
And that’s supposed to be romantic ...?
Half of my theory is true, although I kinda wished it weren't, cause it made Shiori even worse. Have I mentioned I hate her? But hey. At least she puts humans and animals on the same level.
I also start to hate Miko for simply not killing Shiori.
Art is great as always, but not enough to get a higher rating.
shiori rly doesn't understand human feelings. hinako mad at shiori bc she survived bc of her and also shiori doesn't plan on eating her, damn, girl, depression sucks. loved to see miko's true form when she's threatening shiori bc she saw hinako cry we were getting to the best part, when shiori met hinako for the first time, when the volume ended

This one was less interesting than the last, definitely preparing for a big story in the next volume. I’m glad we’re learning more about time characters and seeing their relationships change and grow.
liked it but kinda disappointed by the reveal that the toxic yuri was never actually toxic ☹️ I'm looking forward to discovering what happens next though!

4.5 estrellas La tensión me mata, Hinako ya llegó al limite de su depresión y el hecho de que Shiori la salvará del suicidio es muy triste. ya quiero saber que le va a decir
