Rate this book
Spring has arrived and it’s time to Dig for Victory…

March 1941

After Flo Butterworth loses everything in Manchester’s Christmas Blitz, she decides to leave the area and join the Women’s Land Army. Putting the past firmly behind her, she arrives at Rookery House in Norfolk hoping for a new start and a chance to do the gardening work she loves.

The grip of war has intensified and growing more food is vital to keep the nation going. Thea buys an extra field to grow crops, and in the village, her sister Prue leads members of The Mother’s Day Club and Women’s Institute as they take on a derelict allotment. Meanwhile the construction of a nearby aerodrome disrupts village life and brings even more new residents to Rookery House, including Hettie’s difficult sister, Ada. With Rookery House now bursting at the seams, will it still be the happy home it’s always been?

When an enemy plane crashes nearby, Flo must help German airmen who might have been directly responsible for her family loss. She quickly finds that her heart-breaking past cannot so easily be forgotten. Can she do the right thing? And will her new friends help her move on towards a brighter future?

A heart-warming and uplifting novel following the much-loved characters from the award-winning Mother’s Day Club.

Can new friends help her face an uncertain future...?

Oh, what an absolute joy it is to return to Rookery House and the village of Great Plumstead. I have spent just a day with them but it feels more like a lifetime of friendship and love, embraced in the warmth of Hettie's kitchen. Although this is book 2 in this series, the village, Rookery House and it's occupants were introduced to us in the Mother's Day Club books, of which there are also two. There was a novella last Christmas and I am pleased to note that there is to be another this Christmas. And I can't wait to rejoin everyone at Rookery House once again.

After Flo Butterworth loses her family in the Manchester Christmas Blitz, she flees to the only place that felt like home - in Lancashire with her grandparents. There she comes to the decision to join the Women's Land Army and do what she loves best. Working in the fresh air on the land. This is how she can contribute to the war effort - not by typing letters or taking shorthand.

In Great Plumstead, the village is bursting at the seams with all the goings on what with the Mother's Day Club, the WI, the WVS, the big house having been turned into a hospital...and now even more changes are afoot. Thea has come to the decision to purchase five more acres behind her own property at Rookery House upon which she intends to sow even more crops and branch out into keeping pigs and rabbits for meat production whilst still maintaining their existing land, Primrose the cow for milk, butter and cheese and the chickens for eggs. And with this new purchase, Thea realised that she would need some full time help and approached the Land Army about enlisting a Land Girl for the task. Enter Flo.

When Flo arrived in Great Plumstead she came with the baggage she intended to keep firmly packed away. But she didn't realise she would be living in a house with a family and would have preferred a hostel with other girls so she didn't run the risk of getting attached to anyone, lest the past come back to haunt her. But once at Rookery House, all her defences soon came down once in the warmth of Hettie's kitchen and welcome heart of what truly was a home. Rookery House was full to bursting but everyone moved like a well-oiled machine and worked well together, both in and out of the house. And soon Flo's knowledge of the land was put to good use, not just at Rookery House, but in the village as well.

The parish had finally seen fit to grant the WI with a space in the village allotment, though it came with its own set of problems. Having been previously owned by an elderly woman no longer able to to maintain it, it had been left to rack and ruin with brambles, nettles and overrun with weeds heavily rooted in its soil. The WI were determined to "Dig for Victory" and create a profitable place to grow vegetables they can all use to sell at the markets. Flo's knowledge of horticulture learned from her grandfather gave the women a good start and idea on how to best make use of their land and their crops.

But that wasn't all to change in the village. It seems an aerodrome was to be built on the outskirts and everyone who lived in the vicinity their houses were being requisitioned by the government for the project. They had four weeks to move out and find other lodgings. Not an easy feat in the middle of a war with evacuees fleeing to the countryside and all places once vacant were now full to bursting. Including Rookery House. But still, they made room for one more in the form of Hettie's older sister whose home of forty seven years was to be bulldozed to make way for the runway. She came with her own set of problems and Hettie wondered if they had taken on a little bit more than they could in this case.

Then with the news that even more things were becoming rationed, the women put their heads together to come up with a plan to "make and mend"...making the best of a bad situation. Is there nothing the women of Great Plumstead cannot do?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time back with everyone in the village, it was like coming home to old friends. I really didn't want my time there to end and I'll surely be counting down the weeks until the Christmas publication comes out. It is so easy to become involved in village life as you lose yourself in the pages with the characters and their lives. I thoroughly recommend reading this series and although this is the second book of this series, the village and its characters are introduced in a previous 2-book series which I recommend beginning first.

1. The Mother's Day Club
2. The Mother's Day Victory
3. A Wartime Welcome at Rookery House
4. A Wartime Christmas at Rookery House
5. Digging for Victory at Rookery House

The next book which the author acknowledges at the end to be coming a few months will be "A Christmas Baby at Rookery House". And I cannot wait. Of course it is no secret whose baby it is having read this book and quite honestly I saw that bit of news coming a long time before it was even announced. Still, while these types of saga stories can be predictable in part there is also a little unpredictability about them also. And either way, my enjoyment is never spoilt because of it. This book, as with all the others, is such a delightfully easy read with such short snappy chapters to keep the pace moving that I really didn't want my time in Great Plumstead to end. And I cannot wait to return in a few short months time.

Another wonderful installment to this easy heartwarming series that I highly recommend.

I would like to thank #RosieHendry, #RookeryHousePress and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #DiggingForVictoryAtRookeryHouse in exchange for an honest review.

Florence Butterworth has had her share of tragedy however, joining the Women’s Land Army will give her the chance to put her life back together. When she joins the community at Rookery House she is welcomed with enthusiasm especially as she can help out on the land with the new government initiative of Digging for Victory. With her usual flair for storytelling this talented author once again gives us a warm hearted story about the inhabitants of Rookery House. The stalwart nature in which they all help each other soon helps Flo to relax and open up about the tragedy which has made her question her future.

Returning to Rookery House in this second book in the series feels much like meeting up with old friends so that it really is a pleasure to return to Great Plumstead and catch up with all the news of those who call this lovely place home. There is so much to enjoy in this wartime saga which shows how the local community pull together, making do and mending, digging their allotments and generally looking out for each other, it all helped to make the deprivation of war just that little bit easier to bear. Whilst Digging for Victory at Rookery House can be read as a standalone story if you are new to the series it does make sense to start at the beginning with book one as that way you can ‘meet’ the characters and get to know their individual stories.

Beautifully written, from start to finish, there’s a genuine warmth and a real feeling of camaraderie which make these stories such a pleasure to read. I’ve really enjoyed my visit to Great Plumstead and hope to return again soon to Rookery House.

Digging For Victory At Rookery House by Rosie Hendry is a marvellous historical novel. It is part of the Rookery House series but can be read as a stand-alone. I recommend reading the previous books for maximum enjoyment.
The action opens in December 1940 at the height of the Blitz in Manchester. We see the devastation caused and the luck needed to survive. Plus the guilt of being a lone survivor. Bitterness, guilt and fear make terrible masters. We see a character hiding her feelings as a way of coping. Bitterness creeps in until – one day she faces her fears and realizes the enemy are just young men with families who love them. They are just following orders.
Much of the action is in a Norfolk village. There is a great house and a sense of community as we see women making do and mending; running canteens; arranging fetes; working the land etc. The women are definitely keeping the home fires burning while the men are away.
Houses are thrown open to evacuees and land girls. We see the trauma involved as a family home of forty seven years is demolished in order to make way for a new runway.
All the characters are well drawn, likable and realistic. Rosie Hendry draws the reader into the wartime world of Great Plumstead with her words. I am looking forward to subsequent books.
I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

I loved travelling back to Rookery House and catching up with old friends and even making a couple more new ones. Flo has lost everything in the Manchester's Christmas Blitz so she decides to join the land army which leads her to Rookery House and with Hetties sister also moving in Rookery House is full too bursting. Flo doesn't want to allow herself to become close to anyone ever again but the girls at the house don't take long to take her into there fold. I absolutely adore all the lovely characters who very quickly feel like family although I am a little wary of Hetties sister Ada as she is so different from Hettie who I love but underneath Ada's hard exterior I think there is a heart of gold. I wanted to read this book extra slow to make my time at Rookery House last but of course I couldn't help myself and read it within a matter of hours. I have now decided to read another series by Rosie Hendry called The East End Angels I have high hopes that I will enjoy it as much as this one. Oh and I jumped for joy when I finished reading Digging for Victory at Rookery House and at the end discovered that there is going to be another book in this wonderful series called A Christmas Baby at Rookery House, so I will be keeping my eyes out for that!

Despite the backdrop of wartime, this is an uplifting read which highlights what can be achieved when people work together. The women in the community take support from each other and you see how they try to provide for their families and friends through the different Home Front schemes, planting up a;;otments, makeing do and mend. As newcomers are brought to the village, they offer a friendly welcome. I enjoyed seeing the different elements of the Home Front all working together. That is not to say that the story is in any way sentimentalised or glossed over. Some of the characters have difficult struggles due to the effect of the war and challenges to overcome. You see that their view of the 'enemy' is not clear cut but nuanced.

Central to this story is the newcomer, Flo, who has joined the Land Army after a traumatic event. At first, she struggles to settle in the homely environment of Rookery House as she is trying to protect her feelings. As the story develops, you hope that the village will work its magic. Full of period detail, with some likeable and credible characters, this is a great visit to a fascinating period.

In short: family, friendship, community
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book

Digging for Victory at Rookery House is the latest book in Rosie Hendry's Rookery House series and we meet Flo. Flo has suffered greatly with the sad loss of her family. She decided to join the Women's Land Army as a result, and after her training, was seconded to Rookery House. She was surprised to discover this wasn't a hostel with many other Land Army girls but a family home. She soon got stuck in and, while she held back what happened to her family, she embraced village life. We also meet Ada, Hettie's sister, who has received some unhappy news and is forced to move into Rookery House too. With a full house, Thea is as happy as she can be with how life is moving in 1941. Fantastic characters, most of them down to earth and drawn into village life as a force to be reckoned with. Great story, looking forward to the next installment.

This is the second book in The Rookery House series by Rosie Hendry and what an utterly wonder read it was. We are back with the wonderful women we met in the first book, (A Wartime Welcome at Rookery House ) and in this second book we are introduced to Flo Butterworth who has come to live and work at Rookery House. It doesn’t take long for Flo to become part of the Rookery House family despite the trauma she has suffered. As soon I started reading this book I felt like I was back again in the village of Great Plumstead with these great characters. The author just makes you feel you’re back in the 1940’s and are part of the village community. A fabulous descriptive book that will reel you in from the very start. I was ecstatic to read that there will be a third book in the series , A Christmas baby at Rookery House, which I can’t wait to read. 4⭐️

I was thrilled to return to Rookery House and to reconnect with all the fabulous characters who live there and to meet a newcomer, Flo who comes to Norfolk to escape the devastation that she had endured back in blitz damaged Manchester. It was an emotional start to the story, and it showed us readers the horror of war for those who are randomly caught up in the bombings of major cities.
Flo decides to move away, to do something productive, with the hope that it would help her overcome her losses.
Coming to Rookery House at first she feels uncertain about being in a family home once more. It was lovely to see her let down her defences and to embrace the community that she has joined.
I always enjoy the historical part of these books, learning about the land army life, which particularly interested me as my Godmother joined up when she was young.
Some exciting side stories and the main story unfolding kept me engaged and entertained throughout.
I’m looking forward already to the next book, set at Christmas.

Another brilliant read from Rosie Hendry in the series of Rookery House. It' so nice to catch up with Thea, Hettie and Prue and all the other evacuees in Great Plumstead.
The new occupant of Rookery House is the new Land Girl Flo who comes keeping her personal life a secret of what happened before she was billeted at Rookery House. As she settles she tells Evie and Thea what happened. Also, you come across Hettie's sister Ada. Well you must read this excellent book, I feel that I have given too much of the plot away. A recommended read from me.
I now look forward to the next Rookery House book,

Another enjoyable Rookery House book!

Rosie Hendry writes really enjoyable books, that makes you feel it's about REAL people. Thoroughly researched, the books are accurate.
If you are interested in what the women of WWII's era did, read the East End Angels first, then the Mother's Day Club and Mother's Day Victory first before the Rookery House series.
I can't wait till the next one. I'm grateful for kindle making them affordable as my library doesn't have the Rookery House books.

Enjoy! Definitely 5 stars!

I thoroughly enjoyed returning to Great Plumstead and being reacquainted with the wonderful characters we have already met in this series. As in previous books a new character, Flo, was introduced to the wonderful community and she fits in well. The research that Rosie Hendry does enables us as readers to get a taste of what life was like during World War II. Her books are educational as well as thoroughly enjoyable.

I loved being back at Rookery House and catching up with the residents, new and old. This book focused on Flo who joins the Land Army after losing everything in the Christmas Blitz in Manchester. She arrives in Norfolk and soon settles into life with Thea, Hettie and the others. It’s interesting to read about how life was like for the more rural areas during the war and how the war impacted people who loved there. This gives a real sense of community and companionship, leaving the reader wanting to know what is going to happen next.

I always like stories set in this era. This was as I expected a very engaging read.
However it does suffer as many books do in this genre of having a rather large cast; it takes the reader a while to get to know the characters well and to start caring about them.
We do in the end, and I shall certainly read more in this series and by this author.
