"'I despise you,' said the Duke, his voice trembling. 'You are an evil woman, a devil who means to destroy me. And yet, no matter how hard I try, I cannot be parted from you.'" (37)This collection contains three early stories by Jun'ichiro Tanizaki—The Qilin, Killing O'Tsuya, and the titular The Siren's Lament. Each of the stories grapples with the seductive and destructive forces of pleasure and desire—whether by juxtaposing the righteous character of Confucious with those of power-hungry despots (The Qilin), by tracing the murderous romantic impulses of a young couple (Killing O'Tsuya), or by exploring the existential emptiness of having all worldly pleasures fulfilled (The Siren's Lament). Not yet Tanizaki at his peak, but worth reading all the same.
"'I have not yet seen a man who loved virtue as zealously as he did pleasure.' Such were the last words spoken by the Sage as he left the state of Wei." (37)
