I appreciated this book a lot. As someone with two standard goldendoodles, grooming has always been a hassle and very expensive. I don't think I'll be ready to replace the groomer completely after reading this, but I do feel better prepared for trimming nails and touch ups between grooms.
This is a thorough book for people who do a lot of grooming on their dogs. I didn’t relate to it much because I don’t honestly ever bathe or give haircuts to our big rescue dog, Moose (half black lab, half English setter). I’m sorry but I also don’t brush his teeth every day and have never (fortunately) needed to know how to express his anal glands. It has never occurred to me that he would need regular shampoos, leave in conditioner, essential oil sprays or a balm for his foot pads. He has a beautiful shiny coat and healthy teeth just from a healthy life, occasional brushing, and a good diet. So I am clearly not the intended audience.
That said, this is very thorough with all kinds of trims, cuts and instructions for everything from cleaning ears to giving a puppy cut and many more styles. It has a ton of photographs of every step with all different dogs, too. Highly recommended if your dog regularly gets this type of treatment and you want to learn how to do it yourself.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
I have 2 dogs a Shih Tzu and a Shih-Poo, so both need regular grooming. Fortunately I have fantastic groomers. That has not always been the case. Plus, even with regular grooming, there can be situations that arise. This book is a basic beginners book to dog grooming. This is what the title states, and this is exactly what the book delivers. This is not a book to teach you how to be a professional groomer. It does help you to maintain your dog at home.
The set up for the book is simple and efficient. The best part is the photos. So many photos. This is fantastic. It is so helpful to visually see what the author is writing about. so, thank you so much for all the photos.
This is a basic grooming book. It gives you what you need to help your dog feel and look good.
This book is a great resource for all the essential hygiene care for your dog. Often times I do the grooming or part of the grooming at home and this book was a nice refresher to know I’m doing things correctly, but I also learned some new info and tips. It is pretty basic and more geared towards beginners as the title would suggest. I still did learn a few new things. I would recommend this if you are new to owning a dog or if you haven’t previously done any of their care.
Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry, New Shoe Press for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I got this book to learn how to groom dogs, because who wants to pay a fortune every few months when you can do it yourself?? I’m also applying to be a dog groomer and decided to learn the basics before getting “thrown out to the wolves”. Really I’m just scared of failure. But I came across this book and feel it is very well detailed for beginners to understand. This book is definitely great for learning the basics: types of tools, lengths of coats, how to cut, emergency aid, etc. highly recommend if you’re into dog grooming for a career path or just want to do it at home on your pup!
As a first time dog owner this book had clear explanations of tools to use and when to use which ones, as well as, tips for grooming and first aid if needed, allowing me to feel a bit more confident in caring for my dog. The author briefly goes over different coat types so, I could go to the sections that related more to what my dog has and how to take care of her fur, nails, ears, etc.
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
First up a big thank you for allowing me to read this book! In March I got a puppy (my first dog) and I have been learning more and more on how to groom, how to do things, so when I saw this book I was curious and wanted to give it a shot, I was hoping to learn some more new things!
It had a lot of good points that I really love to try out with my puppy, but the whole trimming chapter was not for my pup given that she is a Cavalier and I already heard you need specific ways to trim her. And we do want to do that because if she is anything like her mum she will look a shag carpet if you don’t keep it up, and as she is really playful and loves running around and playing, but not the part that follows after (aka brushing/cleaning/drying when it was wet out), I really want to keep it medium/short-ish.
But other than that disappointing 5th chapter, I did find a lot of things I want to try. Like I didn’t know that you could use a nailbrush/veggie brush (if soft) for paws and the likes, so I will have to go and see if I can find anything because her paws get sandy/muddy as they are working on the roads and such here. Plus, her eyes really tear so something small to clean that would be ace. Oh, and I loved the part on how to shave the paws + the part on how to dry the dog I am happy that my burrito style wrapping was the right one, haha, and I will have to search for a way to get the blowdryer in a holder, because DANG that would be handy as Coco is still not entirely in love with the dryer (makes too much noise) and it is becoming winter so just drying it by towel is not enough with her hair.
I really loved the 6th chapter which highlighted solutions to common problems + First aid! Like I didn’t know that letting mud dry and then use corn starch and a slicker brush and poof it is clean! Also Chapter 7 with some house-hold solutions to things, like peppermint essential oil would work for carsickness, my pup so far only has gotten sick once, and we are not sure if it was the car or because we had a big day. But if it happens again I can try this!
I also love the big amount of photographs on almost every page. Especially with the grooming/pet care parts it was just a delight how many we got detailing the various steps. I am a very visual girl, if the book was just words I would have DNF it, but now I kept on reading it as I could easily see what needed to be done without having to read the text multiple times.
All in all, I am very happy with this book and I will definitely keep several of the tips in my mind. I would recommend it!
