Apparently there is no age group Nina LaCour can't write for? (In the last few years, she's written a novel for adults and a picture book, both of which were fantastic, in addition to a bunch of YA novels under her belt). This transitional chapter book for ages 7-10 was very cute and charming, with a realistic feisty little 9-year-old protagonist named Ella.

Ella is the self-imposed expert on the apartment house in San Francisco (and its inhabitants) where she lives with her two moms. When a new couple moves in, she shows them everything that they need to know, despite their initial reluctance. When her family or neighbours need help -- walking their dogs, modeling for a painting -- Ella is there, even if it means she has to put off her appointment to have tea with kooky Matilda in one of the other apartments. Then Ella finally gets to meet the elderly couple who live on the top floor, even though they are very shy and sneaky. It turns out they might give her a run for her money on being an expert on the house and the people who live there.

Lovely depiction of community and queer parents! Sweet illustrations as well.

Coming off of Halloween and all my spooky reads, this middle grade book was at times charming and cute. I've read a lot of Nina LaCour's books and I wanted to get an idea of whether or not this would be a good book to gift the kids in my family.

What I liked:
I loved the diversity of this book. There are two same sex couples, including our lead character, Ella's mothers. Nine-year-old Ella has a feisty, strong personality and has appointed herself as the designated tour guide of her apartment building. When a new couple move in, she sets out to show them everything there is to know about the quirks of the building and its eccentric residents.

This story is told in three acts and I enjoyed the final act the most when Ella met her mysterious neighbors upstairs and finds out that they have a lot of knowledge about the building as well.

Could have been better:
Honestly, from an adult perspective Ella would be a nightmare neighbor. I found her character to be a bit bratty. I mean, stomping on the floor above your downstairs neighbors' ceiling because you feel like they didn't give you enough attention as they were lugging stuff into their house? I think it's good that Ella learned to be slightly less judgmental by the end, but I still probably wouldn't want an 8 or 9 year old in my family to read the book and try to emulate Ella's behavior at all. 😂

What a fun and quick read!

Nina LaCour’s The Apartment House on Poppy Hill follows nine year old Ella as she helps new and old tenants in her apartment building. She is always willing to help them whether that’s with welcoming others, providing tours, or dog walking. Ella knows all the neighbors except for the elusive Robinsons who live upstairs.

Ella was such a fun and unique character. Her personality was bold and very well developed. I love seeing her interactions with the different tenants. Even in such a short read, LaCour crafted a solid and charming main character. Ella’s moms and the other tenants were all lovely and unique as well. It was interesting to see the different dynamics they had with Ella. I was glad she finally got to meet the Robinsons.

LaCour’s novel is a must read if you are looking for a quick and lighthearted middle grade! Readers will adore Ella. This book definitely left me wanting more, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received an advance readers copy at the ALA conference. I loved the story of Ella and her moms living in this cute building. I found Ella to be so confident and sure of herself. Ella reminds me of spunky Aven Greene and readers will delight in her intergenerational friendships. I can’t wait to see more of Ella’s adventures in this new series.

I adore Nina LaCour’s Watch Over Me, so meeting her at #ALAAC23 was incredibly exciting! Finishing The Apartment House on Poppy Hill today was a true joy; what a special book this will be for so many young readers.

“Time. It was such a simple word, but it swirled through Ella's mind. The way it made people hurry or wait. How small it could be, like sand falling in an hour-glass. How vast it could be, like all the seconds of her life that led up to this one.”

“Today, she thought about days. How an entire day could pass while she read a book in her mint-green chair, only stopping for snacks and bathroom breaks.
How another could be full of chores and errands and saving various people in a variety of ways. How some days seemed to move as slowly as a snail across her family's garden plot, while others darted past like hummingbirds.
Was time something to let go of, like Livy thought?
Or was Abby right? Did time hold everything together?”

"Well, I wake up very early for work. Did you know that?"
"How early?"
"Five o’clock! I like to be up before it's light. It feels like a secret between me and the day."

“And the earth spun.
And the sky darkened.
And the stars shone.
And time passed, in one way or another.”

Apartment House on Poppy Hill was a cute, fun read geared towards younger chapter readers. It includes some lovely illustrations that really support the story and a fun cast of characters. Ella, our main character, is 9 years old and lives in an apartment building full of big personalities with a focus on community. As a character, Ella has a very strong personality and a desire to share everything with everyone in the building. The character can come on strong and is one of "those kids" that not everyone will love - but who exist and are out there with huge hearts. I did think that the book was a little light on details but the story flowed and the sense of community was strong. I loved all the different people that lived in the building and how to Ella, they were her extended family network and she loved them all for who they are. Overall, this was a heartwarming, quick read!

I loved this so much I read it twice. It reminds me so much of Anastasia Krupnick; everything about it would have been aspirational to me as a kid, from setting to cast of characters, and I would have been DEVOTED to Ella (and Matilda) from the jump.

This diverse transitional chapter book starring Ella, a nine year old with lots of spunk, confidence and curiosity will grab readers’ hearts. It’s set in a charming apartment building on a steep hill in San Francisco, where you’ll meet a houseful of endearing characters. Ella, along with her two mothers, has lived on Poppy Street her entire life, so she knows everyone in the building, along with all of their idiosyncrasies, and makes the introductions.

The short chapters and many black and white illustrations will draw a reader in, along with the stories that are full of warmth and lots of humor. This is book one of a new series for readers who are not quite ready for middle grade stories. I’m certain kids and teachers will be anxiously ready for the next installment.

A super quick and charming read featuring Ella, a precocious and big-hearted nine-year-old protagonist, and the loving little community that is her neighbors in apartment house 1106 Wildflower Place. Ultimately, Ella sparkles as a confident and caring young girl who’s always willing to help her neighbors, but she admittedly can come across as… well, kind of annoying with a heap of unchecked arrogance. She’s particularly insufferable in the first story, and while I appreciate the adults in her life giving her the space and freedom and support to be confident, sometimes you really have to step up and tell your kid they’re being an inconsiderate turd. On the one hand, I feel awful writing that about a child protagonist—especially a girl, who also boasts other great qualities—but on the other… girl, you can’t be doing that.

Ultimately though, Ella is lovely, and I fell in love with the diversity of families and themes of community showcased in this little book. It really made me nostalgic for my own childhood growing up in an apartment building as the only kid along with my brother. People love to put houses on pedestals, but when you’ve got the right neighbors, there’s something comforting about knowing that you can always be there for each other just down the hall.

CUTE!
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘭 by Nina LaCour.
A precocious young girl named Ella is an expert on everything related to the apartment house in which she lives and wants to share her knowledge with a new young couple moving in, but they’re a little too busy at the moment. Ella can’t quite understand why they didn’t want all the information right away, but she’s tickled when they finally do ask for help because she can give the tea on all of her wonderful neighbors.
The book was inspired by the long walks LaCour and her daughter took during COVID, and the neighbors they met on their way.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘭 is just over 100 pages, has illustrations, and is perfect for readers who enjoy Ivy and Bean, Mercy Watson, and Judy Moody. It feels like it will be a series. It would be a fantastic read aloud for K-3.

This is a really cute little middle-grade chapter book.

I love that this story takes place in an apartment building, for all the kids out there that live in one. This apartment building is actually an old Victorian-style house, which makes it all the more special, and practically becomes a character in and of itself.

Ella is the only little girl in the building, and can be a bit annoying at times. She feels it's her responsibility to give all new tenants a tour of the place, complete with info on all the quirks of the old building. She cares about everyone, and that is understandable, it's just that I was not that kind of kid and I had a hard time relating to her.

Ella's mothers are one of two same-sex couples in the building, along with an elderly couple, a young couple who are just moving in, and a single woman that Ella likes to have tea with.

Overall, this is a fun lighthearted story that is written very well. The illustrations are beautiful, detailed, pencil drawings that really drew me to the book.

The book is divided into three sections. My only complaint is that the last section was a little weird. I was not sure what to make of the elderly couple that lives on the top floor. Why were they so mysterious? I would have liked a little more explanation there.

What I liked best, aside from the illustrations, was the idea of a community that runs through all of the stories. These neighbors become like an extended family. That's a great message for all. I would most definitely read future books in this series. I hope there will be many.

I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Nine-year old Ella is delighted! New neighbors are moving to her building, and surely they'll want her help, right? No one knows this place like she does!

This was a charming chapter book. I enjoyed everything about it. Ella was such a cute and lovable main character and I adored following her throughout the story. I loved getting to know her neighbors too and seeing her relationships with her mothers.
Simply put, it was a short and perfect story. I had a great time from beginning to end.

I love the illustrations throughout the book and the story was kinda cute, however Ella was a bit obnoxious and annoying at times...or most of the time to be honest. Although, I was probably similar at age 9 lol.

I read this out loud with my nine year old son. This whimsical adventure is a middle grade novel for newer readers but is sophisticated and doesn’t talk down to kids. As a gay dad living in an apartment building, I appreciate seeing a life like ours reflected back to us in fiction.

You will fall in love with quirky nine-year-old Ella who lives at 1106 Wildflower Place on Poppy Hill. Some might think her to be a little bit of a busy-body. She knows everything there is to know about her Apartment House on a steep hill in San Francisco—how to make the oven work in Apt E, where the dogs from Apt B most like to play, even when the neighbors do the laundry! There’s one remaining mystery though. Who are Gertrude and Archibald Robinson? They live on the top floor in Apt A. No one’s ever seen them but the curtains rustle every now and then and sometimes there are surprises waiting for the neighbors. Can Ella find a way to win them over like she has all the other neighbors? Diverse family situations, delightful relationships, great for beginning readers.

I absolutely adore the illustrations and all the quiet little adventures Ella gets up to. Definitely a fun book for the 7-9 year olds in your life or the young at heart (like me)!
