I loved the foundation of this book - changing the way people think about who they hire, why they hire, and what folks are actually looking for. I loved that the author talked about how it's not so much a workforce shortage so much as a misalignment of employer goals vs employee goals.

As a small business owner, a lot of what was said spoke to me. There were things that aren't necessarily possible to implement for a business as small as mine, or one that requires all employees to be present and on site to get the work done (bakery/ice cream shop), however I found aspects of everything that he spoke of to be valuable.

One critique for the audiobook was that it was a bit hard to follow at times, as there is SO MUCH INFO packed in, so I ended up requesting the ebook as well so that I could link the two. The resources mentioned in the audiobook are not yet up online, so unfortunately I was unable to see those, but having the ebook did give me access to some, though not all, of the diagrams and supplements mentioned. I look forward to seeing those uploaded, and I'll be checking back regularly to see how they are and will update my review after getting those in hand.

Thank you NetGalley, Advantage Media Group, and Forbes Books for supplying both the audio and digital forms of this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Fire Your Hiring Habits provides a wealth of hiring advice relevant in this post-Covid economy. It definitely skews towards corporate culture, but as a small business owner, there were still plenty of useful nuggets to be found.

The audiobook is narrated clearly and concisely by the author, Dr. John W. Mitchell, with links provided to view relevant diagrams online.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC opportunity!

There were several elements about this book I liked:

The author was definitely up to date on the “new” way of work post Covid, including Hybrid models of work, which my office does offer.

I appreciated the onboarding section of the book as I’m looking to streamline my onboarding process, and the author spoke with a lot of genuine respect for other cultures in the culture section of the book. I really like how he sets the tone for offices to be a place for people to be their authentic selves.

My only suggestions for improvement would be that the author would frequently state “we will discuss later” or, “we will discuss in future chapters”- this felt repetitive and unnecessary. Also, I work in healthcare, so I could not relate to this information completely, as it spoke mainly of tech and engineering, however the author did a good job of trying their best to make the information applicable to many different types of companies.

Overall well done and I appreciate this type of leadership- it is how I hope to always treat my staff and it was inspiring to see another person with the same values!

This is a game changer! We are currently in the process of hiring at work and have noticed a significant issue with our onboarding processes. This book helped put obvious things into different perspective. The scenario walk through in chapter 4 was a nice eye opener. My on boarding here was like the first scenario and I guess I just forgot that. I am very excited to start using some of the tips in the next month.

Fire Your Hiring Habits is the best title the author could have thought for this book. After reading it, we literally need to “fire” our old hiring habits if we actually want to hire good employees.
Mitchell uncovers new recruitment methods that help one attract employees, so the book gets educational and informative. It is a mind-opening book and it invites rethinking.

The language here is straightforward and the author includes sayings, phrases, diagrams, links to visit, and a lot of key concepts that empower readers and allow them to get truly involved in the narrative and seize the content.

Another thing I like about this book is the fact that there are rhetorical questions for us readers to ask ourselves.

The contents of this book do not just focus on helping hiring managers find the right employees but as well as to applicants who can learn on what to expect from hiring managers. The things discussed here are very updated and truly valuable and reflect what today's companies need. In his very useful guidebook titled “Fire Your Hiring Habits,” author John Mitchell challenges us as readers to let go of the old ways of recruiting talented workers and embracing the new ways. I really like the ease with which one can follow what he is conveying and the fact that, in the first chapter, he explains certain terms that he uses in the book. It makes a big difference that he clarifies these terms, as many of them were new to me. A lot of things in the field of recruitment and retention have changed and this is the perfect book to come to grips with them. I highly recommend you read this book if you are in a position that requires you to hire talent.

This was an absolutely relevant and well written book that captured my interest although I’m not specifically in the field. Being a thought leader in the sector, the author lends legitimacy to the topic and provides insightful information on contemporary recruiting procedures. Of course those professionals involved in recruitment and human resources in the electronic industry will be able to take greater advantage of the content.
I liked the organization that this title has as well as the use of easy-to-understand vocabulary; also, the use of real-life examples enhances the practicality of this book.
The book is current since it acknowledges the changing demands of the modern worker.

This is a very interesting book. This theme of the rapid changes that the modern world of work has undergone really fascinates me. I really like reading about this subject and this book has been one of the best I've read.
It describes each change that the search for talent has undergone, the technological tools that have currently been incorporated and the contact networks that are used today to connect professionals, leaders and companies.
I got my current job in a qualified professional position thanks to one of these social networks. From what I can attest, what the writer says and transmits is totally true and useful.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

A solid member of the C suite gives his very intelligent and interesting advice on how to hire new employees. Very well considered advice, the author discussed issues such as how to hire good people who will fit in well with your company, and how issues (such as how long employees remain at one job, and how to engage new employees) impact your ability to hire and retain the type of people you actually want to work for you.
