L'École de la forêt
Une cabane au milieu de la forêt. Un enregistreur, un cahier, une boîte de craies, un bandana violet. Deux soeurs, Arole et Bleuet, viennent de quitter la maison. Elles ont grandi dans une communauté. Petite école et grande famille guidées par une poignée d’hommes. Dans cette maison, on apprend à devenir la « meilleure version de soi-même » en se détachant de ses émotions ou en construisant des murs. Comme la plupart des filles de la maison, les soeurs font partie des mauvaises élèves. Elles imitent les guides sans jamais parvenir au même degré de maîtrise et ont bien souvent le sentiment d’être stupides. Au lieu d’écouter les leçons, elles se mettent à tout enregistrer, sermons, repas, promenades. Dans la cabane au fond des bois, elles mènent de longues séances d’écoute. Ça ressemble à une enquête dont le but serait, pour commencer, de mettre les pièces de leur histoire dans un ordre qui la rende intelligible.

Beautifully crafted story, populated by fully imagined and singular characters, plenty of suspense and a wild and surprising ending.
The language is intriguing and imaginative, unlike anything I’ve read in recent years.
There are ingenious plot reveals that add complexity and depth to the story and increase the tension. The author succeeds in keeping all the threads of the story taut until the cathartic finale.
There’s an understated menace about the « school of the forest » that both attracted and repulsed me, permitting me to draw my own conclusions about its teachers, mission and what the « idiots » (students) actually learn.
Anyone whose spent time in a meditation center or intentional community (or who thinks they might like to) will be intrigued by the teacher-student power dynamics, the fast-changing emotional landscape and the array of daily activities portrayed with a wry sense of humor.
