One sorceress fractured the world. Two may be enough to doom it.
Gwyn’s victory against the risen dead has come at a terrible cost.
Aranor has fallen. In the capital, another sorceress rules from a stolen throne. Survivors of the demon war flock to Ailbhe Ahriddin’s cause – and at her side: Alcide, captured and bound, his royal blood the key to enacting Ailbhe’s ultimate scheme.
Scarred by loss and the choices she’s made, Gwyn now holds Alcide’s fate – and the fate of the world – in her bloodstained hands. As she struggles to unite a broken continent, ancient enemies begin to align, testing their powers against her own.
Lives will be lost and sacrifices made as the final battle looms. And in her darkest moment, the Ninth Sorceress will face an unthinkable choice.
Because magic comes with a price. But is it a price Gwyn is ready to pay?
Bonnie Wynne’s epic fantasy saga, The Price of Magic, reaches its shattering conclusion in the spectacular final volume, The Last Sorceress.
Where do I even begin? This five-book series has been a truly epic adventure with memorable characters and engaging writing.
THE LAST SORCERESS was the perfect conclusion to The Price of Magic series. There was never a dull or slow moment - the pacing was well-balanced and kept me completely hooked the whole story. I know it’s a chonky book but it still felt so short to me!
I call it the perfect conclusion because it had everything - epic battles, hard choices, sacrifices, familiar characters returning, love, and twists and turns. They all fit the story so well but still had me on the edge of my seat. I’m so glad we got more Enoch in this book, he’s one of my favourite characters.
This series is a must for fantasy lovers. And now that it’s complete, you don’t have to wait ages for the next one like I did! (They were totally worth the wait though). There’s plenty of action and magic and memorable characters, I highly recommend it! Best of all, the writer and publisher are Australian - we love a local talent!
Twists and turns! Emotions! All of the tears! And above all bursting with magic. This! 👏🏻 Book! 👏🏻 Has! 👏🏻 Everything! 👏🏻 It was a true joy embarking on this final chapter with Gwyn, and although I didn’t want it to end, that’s how you do it! What a fantastic finish to a wild journey!
I should probably give it less stars. I enjoyed the ending, about the last 20-25%. The build up of the first 75% was almost exhausting. So much military-war stuff I had absolutely no interest in. Kind of a let down after re-reading the whole series to finish this way.
The kingdom of Aranor has fallen. Survivors of the demon war flock to Ailbhe Ahridden’s cause, and she has captured Alcide, holding him hostage for his royal blood which is key to enacting her ultimate plan. Gwyn is determined to rescue Alcide before it’s too late, but is she really willing to start a war to save one man; and what about her quest to hunt down the remaining scions?
I fell right back into Gwyn’s story. It’s so well written that I was absorbed straight back in despite the gap between the previous book and this one.
A lot has happened. From training to be a wizard, to taking on the quest to kill the scions, to a demon/zombie outbreak followed by a plague, this series has been full of action, and poor Gwyn has never had a moment of down-time. In some ways the position we find Gwyn in in The Last Sorceress is a bit anticlimactic after everything she’s been through. Seeing her traded off through marriage as though that is the only power she holds was frustrating to say the least, but did work as a reminder that she’s still very young and naïve. Similarly, I did find Gwyn’s persistent self-doubt and denial of her feelings to be quite repetitive. It’s not wonder she didn’t see it coming when anyone tricked or betrayed her, because her thoughts were very much elsewhere for 90% of the book.
Despite my frustration towards Gwyn, I found this book to be an excellent ending to a fantastic series, filled with drama, magic, romance, and dragons – everything you could want, really.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, I have to say that I was so thrilled to go on this journey with Bonnie and experience this fantastic series. If you’ve read my previous review of The Price of Magic saga you will know that I really connected to Gwyn and her journey and this time was no exception. I really enjoyed the tension and twists in this finale. They were a constant in this saga, which kept me on my toes. It was something I really looked forward to.
The relationships in this series were very complex and well thought out, which always makes for an interesting read. One thing I wanted to see more of was Gwyn’s romantic relationship with the male lead (trying to avoid spoilers). We got to see this relationship towards the end, but I wanted more romance and focus on them as a couple in this last installment. However, this series was more focused on Gwyn and her growth more than anything else so I understand it not being as important to focus on. I always crave a good romance so don’t mind me. Even without romance being the focus this series still captivated me.
In the end, I was satisfied with this finale because the story stayed consistent throughout Gwyn's journey and even though she went through huge challenges and changes I could still see the old Gwyn in the end. I was never bored and was kept guessing as to what would come next. I look forward to seeing what Bonnie comes out with next!
A fitting conclusion to what became an epic fantasy tinged with darkness. Battles, armies, betrayals, secrets, blood, magic and heartache await in these pages.
I couldn't help but feel distanced from the characters still, so perhaps that was why their big emotional moments didn't have the impact I'd hoped for. I guess I wanted more of the team together again as well as more fleshing out of relationships and histories (I mean Ailbhe has some really big issues the prequel novella only touched on). So many questions are left about the Scions and magic and... Certain characters. Closure, but also somewhat open ended.
I enjoyed the story and the flawed protagonist that was Gwyn and her Chosen One existence that she never quite grew into. Not every Strong Female Character has to become a fearless warrior with no cares beyond saving the world. Her morally grey crew and unsettling choices make for a darker shade of YA fantasy.
It's a long and winding journey, but if you enjoyed the series so far this one is well worth the time for the weird and wonderfully imaginative world Wynne weaves.
I do not have adequate room to properly review and voice my thoughts. Suffice it to say, I love how you weaved all the amazing “threads” together in completion of this book/series. Please consider optioning this for movies or a mini-series; the world-building, amazing descriptions and imagination are all superb. Good luck!
The life of a young girl thrust into the role of the 9th sorceress. Imprisoned, tortured, shut away from the only family she'd known. Lied to. Never really knowing who she was. Hated by nearly everyone for being born as the sorceress. I enjoyed all the books. Great for all ages.
Read a review but hesitant to venture through a 5 book fulls of unexpected adventure. But I gave it a try. Well written clever characters rose to keep me turning pages. Surprised sometimes and sometimes saddened. Recommend this series with six stars. Beautifully scripted writing and thought provoking themes. Reading this won’t disappoint!!
I have no words. Not the ending I expected, yet surprisingly satisfying. I truly enjoyed this whole series and truly love the ending. Gwyn deserved this ending after all she endured to get here. Good job!
This was an awesome conclusion to an amazing story. Not going to lie I may have to re-read to really understand the ending of the book, but it was a good ride so I don't mind.
This is the fifth and final book in The Price of Magic series, and it has been one hell of an adventure. Bonnie Wynne has created such an epic fantasy; the whole series is engaging and filled with memorable characters. The Last Sorceress is a wonderful conclusion that has everything you want/need in a final installment. I've loved watching Gwyn grow throughout the story, and if you thought the tough choices and sacrifices were over, Wynne manages to up the ante and absolutely destroy my heart. This is a chonky book, but it reads very quickly, and when I tell you, it was like I was on the edge of my seat the whole way! I'm usually pretty good at picking the big reveals, but I was surprised to see I didn't catch this one. There are plenty of epic battles, sacrifices, and even a bit of romance that will keep you glued to this book. If you love fantasy, this series should be added to your tbr now. And the best thing is, all the books are released, so no waiting for new releases! You'll be able to fully immerse yourself in Gwyn's story. Run, don't walk, and get these books now!
I’m am… not sad to see this series go. I probably should have stopped a few books ago… Overall, after five books, I was pretty bored and unenthusiastic about the series as a whole. It might just be me and my connection to the series, but I felt as though there was very little feeling. The characters felt hollow, and I had a hard time connecting with any of them.
Gwyn constantly made the most ridiculous choices. She (more than) struggled to make a decision or to commit to anything until she was basically backed into a corner and had no other choice.
I think I knew from the beginning where things were going to go with Alcide, but even after it did happen, I still felt zero chemistry between the two. It felt very “oh well. I guess I love him now”. I wasn’t a fan of Lucien, but even whatever they had together was more convincing.
I like the spin with the Scions. Their entire story was fantastic. I loved the history of the Sorceress’s and I couldn’t get enough of it. But the characters really lacked in this series, making it really hard (impossible) for me to enjoy it.
